Good morning everyone,

It's raining quite heavily today so I may as well spend the day cleaning. We might cook our small turkey tonight if my husband feels like he could eat a big meal. It'll be good for another day or two so we can decide later.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/03/21 05:39 PM

Drac, so very sorry about your cat cry I've never had one, but a pet's a pet, no matter where they come from. yes

Well, almost ordered my window treatments yesterday. I'm working with JC Penny which was highly recommended to me by several friends. Found what I want for 3 windows all of which will have some kind of blinds. The rest, which are smaller will have curtains. I learned the company that bought out Penny's has changed it a lot which is why the measurers and installers are a separate phone call. They used to be employed by Penny but not any more. Also found out that the color and pattern options changed to plainer, and not everything shown or available in the store. Sales rep told me she always finds herself apologizing to customers about the lack of choices. For me, fewer choices help with making my decision; too many overwhelm me, Took 90 mins to look at everything and I was pooped. Now I just have to go online to look at other options for rest of windows (rods and look of curtains). Call to get final measurements done. Once I am ready, because I don't a Penny's charge card, I have to return to the store to submit full request and pay on a different charge card. Penny's was a frequent shopping place for me years ago until they stopped offering the kind of clothes I liked.

Next project is to update my handyman chores list. I have a few names to contact, hopefully someone or two will help with a few things. I can't do any of it myself. Getting those kind of chores done are the only thing I miss after being married to a handyman for 30 years. Finding someone has been a trip in itself. Could write a short book about it crazy

Looks like it's gonna be warm week, heading into 70s. Time to put a chair in my garage so I can sit outside for a while.

Happy Easter!

Hubby and I were up early yesterday and headed up to the mountains for a hike. Then up even earlier this morning for a beautiful sunrise service. Headed out to a hill with 500 other folks to celebrate as the sun came up. Could not have gone if I had not had both shots.

Then home to send Happy Easter gifs to the kids followed by phone calls. It was cool this morning but supposed to be nice by the afternoon, so hoping to get out for a nice stroll this afternoon.

Drac, I am so very sorry about Voldemort

I hope you all have a most wonderful and blessed day

Had a nice Easter meal with my DIL's family yesterday afternoon. Our granddaughter was home on a VERY short leave from her Army base in Fort Stuart, Georgia. She is so thrilled to finally have graduated from her Intelligence Analyst training last month and have a permanent base. She was an A++ student in high school and could have gone to any university she wanted, but she wanted to join the Army after she graduated last summer! She is a striking 6' tall and fit as a human can be!

Have a wonderful Easter, everyone!

Happy Easter, everyone.

I did cook our turkey yesterday and we shared it with our friend and neighbour from across the road. He's been such a good friend to us through my husband's illness. They watch sports together and play darts and drink beer, and it gives my guy a sense of normal even when he's not feeling too well.

After we ate we watched a couple of episodes of Jeeves and Wooster, an old Hugh Laurie/Stephen Fry collaboration based on P.G. Wodehouse's books. It's silly and hilarious in the way that British humour can be.

Happy Easter from here too! I took Nugget out for a few mile hike this morning after a few random acts of kindness on our local Buy Nothing Facebook page. If anyone is on Facebook I highly recommend that they check out there local Buy Nothing Group to give away things that are good but no longer needed. I gave away a one year old lawn mower (I have a service since my shoulder surgeries) to a kid looking to earn money for college in the fall. Made me quite happy! After that I went kayaking with my friends who is legally blind. We saw lots of minks, and a coyote hot on their trail. I love kayaking up a quiet creek because the wildlife pays no mind.

Sounds like everyone is enjoying their Easter and that's certainly a good thing! Here at my house everyday is the same - we don't do anything special or different on Holidays. However, the Easter Bunny decided to make a trip to my home anyway and he placed some Russell Stover Cream Eggs around my house while I was lazing out in bed laugh.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/05/21 02:28 AM

I'm late responding to the birthday wishes. Thanks so much. I got my second Covid shot on Thursday. They warned me I might have an unpleasant reaction since I had antibodies from having Covid last year. The reaction was supposed to occur about 12 hours later. I was expecting the worst but 12 hours later I felt fine. The next day was my birthday and I still felt fine and went out for breakfast, then played cards with friends. Aha, 36 hours later and I thought I had been run over by a very large truck. I laid on the couch and slept most of the day, then went to bed and slept all night. This morning I woke up my usual sunny self with no further ill effects. I guess the vaccine is worth one day of feeling really bad if it provides immunity.

Happy Easter! I opted not to decorate the golf cart and join the Easter Parade because every Holiday I buy decorations and get ready to go, it pours rain. In an effort not to jinx the parade for others, I watched from the sidelines. Sure enough, the day stayed beautiful and sunny from start to finish. I'm no scientific genius, but I think I may be onto something. Me + golf cart parades = stormy weather.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/05/21 03:51 PM

I'm not into Easter but am sure glad warmer weather is here. Between that and vaccine, makes me feel free to have outside fun, even something as wonderfully simple as sitting outside my home with friends eating an early dinner provided by Subway.

My closest friend contacted me from southern Illinois where her husband's family lives. First time they'd seen them in a year.

What a relief to be inching toward the end of the worst of the virus; hopefully it stays that way dance

Had acupuncture on Sat which, after about 10 treatments I'm starting to bounce back from quicker. At first, I was exhausted and couldn't think much the first few days after treatment. Lucky to get one exercise and chiro treatment in. The initial exhaustion is waning away. Yesterday, tired but more energy that after previous treatments, actually got a few things done. Today a bit more tired, think I'll just enjoy some gaming time. Maybe take a lawn chair (the base has a rocker type of mechanism) out from under the tarp and put it in garage so it's ready. I like to go out mid-afternoon to read, close my eyes, and wait for my dog to come home from playing.

It's been sunny but chilly and very windy. Still, it's lovely to see the sun. It might be nice to take a drive down the coast this week if the weather holds because it's too cold and windy for boating.

I'm starting to see an improvement in my lung capacity after a couple of months on the bike. My asthma is not nearly as bothersome these days. I can get a full breath now. I'll never be able to go full tilt and I doubt I'll ever be able to get through an actual spin class, but I'll find it easier to tackle steep hills when I go walking this summer. I've always been the one who has to stop half way up a hill and it would be nice to just be able to keep up.

Florida got a slow start with the vaccine rollout, but once the feds opened up huge walk up sites, we really started showing progress. The age limit dropped every week and now 16+ and any age adult can get a vaccination. Nursing homes and extended care facilities are done and they started on prisoners this week. High hopes things are under control very soon and we can try to get back to normal, if anybody remember what normal used to be. I can't wait to go fishing and to the beach.

hagatha, I don't have ashtma, but I get more windy now than I did a few years ago. Good for you for pushing forward to feel better. I like to notice every little bit of positive change. Slow but sure. Problem is, it takes patience lol As for your vaccine, May will be here before you know it. yes

Almost warm enough for AC today; but heading back to 50s and 60s after that for a while. That's ok, long as I can open a window for fresh air.

Renewed my driver's license online, but gotta go in anyway cause, since I last did it, I added a po box to my address and they insist I come in to verify it. What a pain slapforehead

Seem so me the more they try to make things more efficient, the more complicated they become woozy

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/06/21 08:46 PM

I was just reading that the vaccine lasts "at least 6 months". I'm sorry, but that hardly seems worth it when it takes that long just to get it. I'm not old enough yet but don't really plan on getting one. My brother is hoping to someday get one but will not deal with all the hassle right now.

I opened my bedroom window for some "fresh air" today but all I'm getting is warm stuffy air. At least I hear some birds for a change. The world is very quiet without birds.

Finally a nice, still day for boating.

We went out for a spin and tried our luck fishing, but nothing was biting. We decided to come in a bit early, which was a good thing because the tide table was way off and we're moored in a tidal river. There was about 2 feet of water as we inched past the barge under construction in the river's harbour. If we'd stayed out as long as we intended it would have been a looooong, cold, hungry wait until the tide came in. lol

Good morning, everyone! Well, MY day started off with a bang. I had a message from Razer that I had won one of their gaming chairs! If you're not familiar, Razer is a well-known company that sells very high end gaming laptops and accessories. Winfrey and hagatha both have one of their high end gaming laptops. They had a contest a few weeks ago giving away two of their gaming chairs... one on Facebook and one on Instagram. All you had to do was write a post on why the Iskur gaming chair would be the best chair in the world for you. So I did a post about being an over-70 gaming great grandma. And I won the chair given away on Facebook. I about fell over... this chair is $499 on their website!

Razer Iskur Gaming Chair

Think I'll have one of Connie's Danishes with my coffee to celebrate!

Drac, that is sooo cool! Good for you rah

Really perks a person up to win something! Years ago my folks put in a few $ enter a church raffle. They were shocked when the church called to say they won a few hundred, which went a long way in the 60s,

Shortly after my ex and I were married, during 80s, we entered raffle held by a local youth group and were shock to get a call saying we'd won the first prize, a 16" RCA color TV with remote. This was a major piece of wood furniture, and remotes were still a new thing. We had it about 15 years, before replacing with a computer type screen model, shortly after those started coming out. Gave the RCA to a church youth group.

Afternoon all.

I'm not a happy camper today. I just received a notice to call about jury duty next month. I really cannot handle that again! I don't know why they keep bothering me. I've never had a license or been registered to vote (which is how they say they get your info). frown cry
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/08/21 07:11 PM

The last summons for jury duty I got was for Federal jury duty about 4 years ago! I would have loved to do it, but I would have had to drive an hour into downtown St. Louis every day for it. I had to testify for one of my cases when I was working at the Federal courthouse and the parking was a nightmare. The guy had a Federal arson charge after he set fire to his gas station just hours after I had done an inspection of his gasoline tanks. He was convicted and sentenced to 5 years. Four years ago, I had just had major surgery and got an excuse from my doctor to excuse me. It was accepted. Maybe you can get one too???
Posted By: oldbroad

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/08/21 07:29 PM

Last time I went I was 10-15 miles from home at 9:30 pm with no buses running to get home. Had to trust a fellow juror who I had a bit of a language barrier with to get me home. Probably would have been there all night except half of us changed our votes to match the other half so we could get the heck out of there. Jury duty is a joke in my book, except it's not a funny joke - it's a dirty joke!

I can't get a doctor's excuse because I don't have a doctor.

This is only a "stand-by" notice but I'm sure nobody is wanting to do jury duty during the pandemic so I'm sure I'll have to go. That's how my world works.

The first time I went I was even farther from home with no bus service at the time we got out. It was in the daytime but a suburb and the bus didn't run for several hours during the day. That time I sat in the middle of the court house (didn't go into the courtroom waiting room place for at least a half hour because I didn't realize I was in the wrong place. I had asked somebody but they would not help me, just told me to "move along". I finally figured it out by observing while sitting.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/08/21 07:37 PM

I got a summons for jury duty a couple of weeks ago. I got a 4-month extension for the time being, but I have several excuses for not being able to go at all, so I am hoping that they will see things my way when I get another summons in June. The courthouse I get summoned to is 45 miles away and I would have to rent a car to get there because our car has a slipping transmission and we don't go anywhere in it except for shopping, etc., which is three miles away. There was a courthouse about 10 miles away, but they closed that down several years ago.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/08/21 07:57 PM

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/09/21 05:44 PM

A while back, I was getting summoned almost every other year, and ended up on two juries; a malpractice, and one with punitive damages from a fatal car crash. But were interesting, educational experiences in civil law suits, and both were in main federal building in downtown Chicago. The last summons I had was to appear at the criminal courts building, the world of harder criminals. I was scared about even being around that neighborhood and had no one to go with me, so my therapist wrote up an letter which they honored. Knock on wood, I've not been summoned since. Thank God.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/09/21 07:51 PM

butterflybabe - If you mean 26th & California, that's the one I was at at 9:30 pm! The other one I was stranded at was in Skokie. Downtown was okay when I went but not anymore. This time (if I have to go) is in Maywood. I checked the buses - not going to happen - 2 buses and a 2 mile walk, one on each end of the buses. Now, to be perfectly honest, my brother will take me and pick me up, however, I don't feel that is the way it should be!
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/09/21 09:01 PM

And they don't need to know that either. Just plead transportation issues and that you don't drive.
Posted By: Marian

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/09/21 09:35 PM

The rules in my county say that if you have transportation issues that you need to appear the first day of the summons for jury duty and tell that to the judge, who will then possibly excuse you if warranted. I said to them when I called - how am I supposed to show up on the first day of court and tell the judge that I have transportation issues, if I don't have transportation to get there to tell them that? They did not directly answer my question, but instead gave me a 4-month postponement. When I get the next summons in June, it will be interesting to see how they reply to my question.
Posted By: oldbroad

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/09/21 09:44 PM

Exactly Marian. I know that they will actually tell you how to get there using public transportation but don't take into consideration all of the factors, such as how often that transportation runs and how late etc. That was my issue in the past, it was not considered a reason.

Good luck to you! Are you old enough to get out for your age? If I was a couple of years older, I could use that!

I am just not sure if I should call and open up that can of worms for a "stand by" notice but if I wait then it's right there in my face and no option except to go or ignore the summons.
Posted By: Marian

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/09/21 09:44 PM

In my county you have to be 70 years old to get out of it due to age. Not there yet.
Posted By: oldbroad

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/09/21 09:52 PM

I thought they changed it from 70 to 65 here, but in re-reading it, one page says 70 and a second page says 65 so I am not sure. Maybe you have to go for possible selection until you are 70 but if you are between 65 and 70 you can then turn them down in person??

PS - I know you are not 70, but was not sure about the rules out there smile
Posted By: Marian

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/09/21 10:12 PM

I am not sure about whether the rules consider 65 years or older a reason to be excused if you appear before the judge. I was going by the fact that the jury summons itself only shows possibly being able to excuse yourself if you are 70 years or older.

Hi all.

Oldbroad, I wish I could help with your dilemma. I know how hard it is to have to rely on public transportation that isn't set up for more rural routes. In my days at York University, when I didn't drive and had no car, I was often left taking public transit late at night when I felt unsafe waiting for hours for a bus connection. At the time, York was at the very northern edge of Toronto and the bus service was infrequent. I'd come home from my part-time job downtown in the winter and it would be dark and very cold, and I would freeze while waiting. It's exhausting.

Finally, spring is really here. The garden is absolutely full of gormless young birds being fed. The nesting material I put up is torn to shreds, so there's nest-building everywhere.

I've been to the garden centre and bought some lettuces and a few wild currant bushes for the butterflies and hummingbirds. I'll put the currants on the south slope that fronts the water, so we can be entertained when we have a fire on the beach.

Another yucky day! I feel like family with "same thing!" Raining, cold and very windy. Just came in from the barn and am huddled by my heater now. Another slug day. Oh well, at least yesterday was sunny and I spent most of it running a friend who doesn't drive to the doctor. Was grateful for my good old Dodge Dakota pickup with 4-wheel drive and a manual transmission as I have to drive through TWO creeks to get to her place!

Sun! There is sun today! summer So no slug day for me then! Cleaning. Got up this morning and it looked like a cat had exploded in the living room! One of my so-called barn cats thinks she should be a house cat and I let her inside a lot because she's a $650 barn cat because of persistent UTI's and is supposed to eat a VERY, VERY expensive food. Miss M is shedding like mad! It thundered 200 miles away, so the smelly Bloodhound was in the house last night and she is shedding like mad too. Don't come to my house if you don't expect to leave covered in pet hair! Hope soot leaves me one of those glazed donuts!

Good morning, all. No doughnuts for me today, but coffee, yes please, in large quantities!

A beautiful sunny day here, too. My cat is already asking for a walk. Like a dog, she knows what the word, "walk" means. But lately we have this nagging suspicion that she also understands it when we spell the word out loud. We have already established that spelling the word, "fish" won't get us off the hook. Animals are so much smarter than a lot of people given them credit for.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/11/21 05:48 PM

oldbroad, you're right. It was 26th and California; not the greatest neighborhood at all. Few years ago, my closest friend was summoned to that courthouse. I was worried, but she assured me that she had had to visit that courthouse 10 years prior and felt she could handle it. Her husband even cautioned and offer to drive and go with her. She felt it was unnecessary. Later, she said she admitted she had been wring, and was surprised how much that area had changed. Since the last time I had jury duty, my last name changed with my divorce. Waiting for them figure that out. I don't think I had jury duty before I was married. Interesting info about the age issue cause I didn't know that. Course, I was much younger than and that was no where near an issue for me.

Toddlers, too !!

When my eldest Daughter was just a toddler spelling the word "sweets" was common place because even though I didn't let her have many at all, she did know what the word itself meant.
Anyway, one day my Sister in law called round and she had brought a small bag of Dolly Mixtures for her.
She said to me "where should I put these s -w -e -e -t -s ??". [Spelling out rather than actually saying the word.]
Whereupon my little girl immediately went to the sideboard and pointed to the one of the small locked doors there !! lol

That's adorable! lol

Yes, that's pretty much the reaction we get. If we spell the word "fish" my cat immediately goes over to her bowl.

These days the word "chicken" also must be spelled out, but she hasn't learned to spell that word yet so we're still safe. Of course, if we actually have chicken for her we do get her going by saying that word in a rooster squawk (if you can imagine..."chiKEN, buk, buk, buk...chiKEN, buk, buk, buk. She gets the picture pretty clearly. grin

L4L, I'm reading a book by Louise Penny.

The title is "All the Devils Are Here".

It's a series with Chief Inspector Armand Gamache as the main actor.

The action is usualy in the Province of Québec except for this one that is in France.

It's the 16th book by Penny with Gamache that you can read in French or in English.

They are all very interesting.

Just coffee this morning. Fixed hubby his Saturday biscuits and gravy, eggs and bacon breakfast. I have a giant box with a new 50" TV inside waiting for me to set it up. Not looking forward to it! Loved the old one, but ever since we had 4 huge lightning strikes next to the house last fall, the HDMI ports have been wonky and they finally quit working.

Grandson is bringing his girlfriend and her daughter for supper tonight. It was just going to be him, but he just called to ask if it was OK if he brought them too. Need to change my menu a bit!

TV is up and running without TOO much tearing my hair out! Hubby is happy and that's all that matters - he doesn't like change!

Mustard basted pork loin on the pellet grill, chicken tenders ready to go for the youngster - don't know her age, but could be only 2! - mac and cheese, fresh asparagus from the pasture, my own spiced applesauce I canned last fall and home made brownies for dessert. I don't think anyone will go hungry!

Yes, I've heard that, too. I'm now the only person going out for groceries so I'd better stock up before my shot.

This Spring my husband tried to do some of things he's always done in the past, like clearing the weeds from the greenhouse and power-washing our deck and the driveway, but he's slowly realizing that he simply cannot do any kind of physical work any longer. His back is just too painful now.

We have a shared property, an unusual duplex on the water, so he was feeling pretty guilty about not doing our share, but our bubble neighbours all came over to help with the yard work. We supplied the beer and pizza and it all turned into a nice little social event. We're so lucky to have such good friends around us now, since we can't see our Lower Mainland friends or our families.

hagatha, sorry the wind scuttled your plans.

It's a cool day (to me) so I'll be working out inside. Then I'm Flirting with the idea of heading out to do shopping today, but may just take today as an "ahhh" day as those have been sorely lacking lately.

Whatever you end up doing, may it be a wonderful one!

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/22/21 03:57 PM

Sorry, I've not been here for a while, too many doc appts make me frustrated and tired; all I want to do is play games; and doc appts not done yet.

Last Friday saw reg doc for 6 month and we talked about my hip pain. Time to go to ortho doc. Reg doc suggested the same ortho doc I went to a few years ago for my knees, which also aren't doing good. Have an appt with him for next week. Meanwhile, pain in my left foot made me think screw inserted 6 years ago needed to come out. Nope. I've got a stress fracture in the middle bone. Doc noted I've been walking on outside of my feet where the bones are less sturdy. Didn't even realize I was doing that; probably due to balance issues. Came home with ortho boot which is challenging my balance again. Been a long time since I've worn one, and trying to remember how I got things done the last time. I'm exhausted. And, still have 3 other 'reg' appts that are overdue. Tired of working my life around that stuff razz At least I have good docs... rolleyes

TRYING to look on bright side; winter is over which makes life a little easier, and I no longer have work responsibilities so don't have to account for my time, and push myself to get that done too.

oldbroad, so sorry about your kitty hug

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/22/21 06:03 PM

butterflybabe, that sounds exhausting. We go through that periodically with the husband's health issues, and we both just get to the point where all we want is a day in bed with a cup of tea and a good movie.

Draclvr, we were pretty disappointed, as the wind is up again and it can go on for a month or more in the Spring. It's sad because we're aware that my husband's boating opportunities are fleeting at this point.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/22/21 06:30 PM

Thanks butterflybabe. I know this sounds stupid to most people but I just don't bother with doctors. I cannot handle all that going to different doctors for different things and different tests here and there. When I lose consciousness, somebody can take me in. It was a big fiasco just to get an appointment to have my cat cremated (appointment to bring him there tomorrow). Too much phone tag. Does every business just have voice mail with 10 different options and then "leave your number"?

Anyway, I hope all goes well with your health butteflybabe, and hagatha, I hope you get to go out boating real soon!

Have a good day all!

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/22/21 07:14 PM

I have no problem with going to doctors and at least "trying" to be healthy. Both my husband and I would be dead already if we hadn't. I would have died 5 years ago with the ovarian tumor and last summer with the blood clots in my lungs. Nope, I've got lots more to do in my life yet - such as getting Razer Gaming Chair put together as I finally got it! Seeing doctors is a small price to pay. However, I agree with butterflybabe and hagatha... sometimes I just want to take a nap after days of appointments!

Even my doctor adverse friend who runs a 501c 3 foundation for caring for elderly, sick and unadoptable animals finally agreed to let me take her to a doctor - she doesn't drive and lives out in the middle of nowhere. Turns out she has CLL, a chronic leukemia. I'm taking her to get a CT scan tomorrow and then taking her back to the doctor next Tuesday to discuss a treatment plan or to just monitor it with bloodwork. She also hates all the blood tests here and the scans there and this doctor and that doctor. But as I told her, she has a lot of animals dependent on her.

oldbroad, it doesn't sound stupid to me at all. It's just your decision to live your life the way you want to!

Sounds wonderful. Let us know how it is. I've seen gaming chairs before but nothing nearly as attractive as the Razer chair. Is it the one with the coloured trim?

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/23/21 05:09 PM

oldbroad, be assured I hate having to go to doctors, but I find it extremely difficult to enjoy life when I'm hurting. As it happens, my life has been a series of them going beyond the regular checkups. I was born with a double hare-lip and cleft palate, which took 10 surgeries before my face looked 'normal'. One of them caused my sleep apnea. As my body aged, my feet started talking to me causing another bunch of surgeries. Without the health care I've received, I'd be in a wheelchair, unable to easily breath and feed myself, maybe even a shorter lifespan. I don't mean to be dramatic, but the surgeries, painful and aggravating as they've been, changed my life for the better. Now I need to find out what to do to get my balance back, cause that's what's causing the pain and stiffness from tension. I need to know for sure what's going on and figure out my limits.

But, I agree with you about the frustration of calling doc offices. New technologies, as well as new generation of office personnel bring on other challenges. Everything is computerized now. I hate having to have a password for every 'patient portal' set up by doc offices to update and provide info. In some ways I like it, others I don't. Every time I go into the meds section of my profile, always one or two still listed that I said to remove. I recently cancelled a dental appoiintment for which I had been asked to fill in my med history via a texted questionaire. Didn't get to it. After cancelling, called the doc's office to ask them to resend it and was told can't do it until I've an appt. Huh? Nope, can't do it ahead of time. Receptionist agreed would be smart and easy to do it that way, but system not set up that way. Go figure!!

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/23/21 06:00 PM

Thanks Kaki's sister. We still have 3 more cats and don't intend to ever have more. For our sake as well as theirs.

butterflybabe, I am constantly amazed by what some GB members go through here and try to get inspiration from you all. There are several reasons (excuses) why I don't go to the doctor but as I stated earlier, I truly do applaud all of you for keeping up with your health issues! The most I've done in over 20 years is have a tooth pulled (several in fact).

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/23/21 08:04 PM

We had a nice morning pottering around the house.

Spring weather is definitely here, and the bird life in our garden is wonderful. The goldfinches arrived a couple of days ago and the house finches are in blazing colour at the moment.

The humpbacks should be here fairly soon, too. Hopefully the wind and tide will allow for some boating opportunities. My guy may not have too many of those left -- he's definitely losing ground, though very slowly. Getting out on the water perks him up, especially if there's something to photograph.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 04/24/21 10:17 PM

Not much happening today. Getting used to ortho boot. Removed a piece that was digging into my leg and feels better. It's just stiff and heavy to lug around.

Weather staying in 50s and 60s most days; 70s should start soon. Before ya know it, we'll be complaining about the heat and humidity. Staying inside to cool off in stead of warm up yes

Funny dog story. Yesterday morning, when doggie day care came to pick up my dog, two people came, one of the usual guys (Jake) had brought a new staff member to meet Huey and explain how to work with him. Huey was snoozing in his bed and the guy called him out. Slowly, Huey started ambling over. The guy hunched down with Hueys leash and collar, ready to hook him up, but Huey, having noticed the other person walked right passed him to greet the woman. Maybe you had be there, but I laughed my head off. Now Jake a sweet kindda quite guy. Last week, he had to actually walk to Huey's bed to coax him out and get him moving, another laughable situation. Counter that with another staff, Tara, who is fun to chat with, comes into my home with a loud Hello Huey lets go, and stoops down to pat him before hooking the leash. He doesn't need any coaxing when she comes. Lately I've come to take more notice that Huey seems more apt to jump up and run with the ladies, and take his time with the men. I've have to pay more attention and report back grin

If my dog had his way, I'd be up feeding him by 4 am, and that ain't gonna happen thumbsdown Some days, if I don't sleep well, I'm up around 5am. Other days, he's whining by 5:30am. If I happen to oversleep and not get up until 6, he's frantic and overly thrilled that I finally woke up. Anyway, by the time the day care folks arrive about 7am, I'm just about alert and thinking of breakfast. But no matter how I feel, watching him run or not run to day care staff, he makes me laugh. During the really cold days, sometimes the staff will pick him up so he doesn't have to walk on the ice or snow. What a life. haha

Didn't have time to grab a Danish this morning. Took my friend over to the doctor again for final diagnosis and treatment. She will be getting four 4-hour infusions once a week - not chemo. Mostly to try to get her back on her feet because she has to take care of so many animals.

I now have a couple of days off. I really need it. The kids have their May holiday as well. I'll be making a few bike rides along the flower fields. Very beautiful at the moment.

Well-done, Mad! It certainly gives you a little bit more freedom and I'll take it! I frequent a rather large local supermarket. We've had very little rain in my part of the UK during the whole of this month so once a week I've dragged myself out to water both front and rear gardens. Because I have a LOT of big planters that need plenty of water.

And the same was forecast for the whole of this week too .... No Rain.
So out I went to do it all again on Wednesday.

And then on Thursday it absolutely poured down !!!!

Kind of excited to have put out my first 1/2 gallon of sugar water for my hummingbirds! I've had travelers, but my resident hummers are finally here. I can tell the difference because the travelers are afraid of me and my resident birds will buzz me if their feeders are empty!

Grabbing just a cup of coffee this morning. Plan is to head in town to start buying flowers for all my big outdoor pots. We got 114 tomato plants in the ground Saturday! Now to see how many survive the heavy thunderstorms tomorrow. I took a good week to harden them off to the outdoors, so I think they will be fine. A couple of certain dogs with VERY big feet are the most danger to them! But I have at least 100 extra plants if they are needed. Then I will start giving those away.

Enjoy your Monday, everyone!

Groan.... coffee please. Had to get up at the a** crack of dawn to take my friend over to the next town for her first round of infusions. It was still dark out and I whined a lot. She told me it was bad enough to have to go through this, but also having to get up so early! She operates a Foundation for unadoptable animals and has around 30 dogs she had to get up and let out and then get back in their kennels. She said it was like herding cats! Now we have to worry about whether she can get back in this afternoon because of rain! I have to drive through two creeks to get to her house and if it rains a lot, they won't be passable.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 05/08/21 04:01 PM

Our bubble neighbours have all had their first shot, too, so we're all feeling pretty good about our small gatherings.

My husband hasn't had a shot, and I'm not pushing it because he isn't well now and has a severe needle phobia to boot. He rarely goes out because his mobility is poor, so I think he should be pretty safe within our small group. I might be able to persuade him to have a shot if we can get a Home Care Nurse over to administer it, for when things open up again and we can go out for meals, etc. We've got a couple of resorts nearby that have outdoor seating and it would be lovely to have lunch out on the deck.

We still haven't seen any humpbacks We were just checking our records, and they seem to show up anywhere from the end of April to the end of May so they should be back any day.

We did see a huge pod of Pacific White-Sided dolphins last week, followed about an hour later by a large pod of Transient Orca -- usually the Transients travel in small family groups but they will congregate with other groups for a hunt. They are mammal eaters, whereas our Resident Orca are strictly fish-eaters. The Residents are in trouble for lack of food, especially the Southern Resident pods, so salmon fishing is closed until further notice. Last year it was shut down until July. I'm hoping it never gets opened at all this year, just to give the babies a chance. The value of those animals to local economies is immense -- we have several whale-watching tour companies here just in our small city and they're packed all summer long.

I'm not techie enough to do that! lol I can't even get my photos off my phone.

I fi had instructions I could, though.

I was actually going to post a link to my husband's photo website, but for some reason it doesn't load properly, and I'm not sure whether he's been maintaining it lately.

EDIT: Okay, so his web site isn't loading properly, and the fellow who was maintaining it is really busy, but here you can scroll through some of the photos. The verticals don't load properly, so they're cut off, and the horizontals are too big, but you can get a sense of what's what. It's really too bad we can't get this up and running again because it's really important to me.

Anyway:

I only wish it was loading correctly. The proportions in some of the photos are completely wrong. I'm hoping we can find someone here in town who can help us get it running properly again, since it's kind of a legacy.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 05/09/21 03:07 AM

He is very talented. It's honestly too bad you can't see the pictures properly.

The photography is one of the main reasons we moved here from Vancouver, though when we moved we had no idea that the humpbacks had returned to the area after 60-odd years -- they were hunted right down to the very last one. We saw them up in telegraph Cove about 15 years ago, and they had only just arrived that year, again for the first time in 50 years. It's nice to know that nature can rebound if we stop killing everything!

Morning everyone, this has been one crazy week for me. I posted we were selling our lake house... boy, there is a lot of paperwork associated with this. Thank heavens for this thing called Docusign that lets you log in and sign documents online. Between that and all the bids coming in it has been crazy. I never would have thought that the renting of a truck would end up being one of our biggest problems. UHaul sucks to say the least! We made reservations with them to rent a truck then proceeded to buy tickets to fly down. With everything set we get a call from UHaul stating that they no longer can get a truck for us and instead want to send boxes to us to fill and they would pick them up... no way would they be able to get those down our mountain driveway.. we said no we did not want to cancel.. they said they would try and get a truck.... 2 days later they called and said no they could not but we could use a truck and fill it and drive it to them and they would put the stuff into boxes and send the boxes to us> WHAT.. we can have a truck for a day only... this wouldn't work.... thank Heavens for PENKSE TRUCK Co. They have guaranteed us a truck! eek

Good grief! U Haul doesn't seem to want your business very badly! Glad you found an alternative. I was wondering how the sale was going to go. Around here, it's an extreme seller's market. Even in our small town, a house goes up for sale and there is a bidding war!

Happy Monday everyone! I'm happy to say that after 10 days, my sister has turned the corner and is starting to feel better. She can now stay awake all day instead of sleeping which is a huge difference. She still gets exhausted after just feeding her cat and ferals and needs to rest, but sitting and watching tv or reading is better than completely zonked out. I'm so happy! Thank you so very much to all of you for the prayers and positive thoughts! I believe they all helped!

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 05/11/21 04:34 PM

Hello friends,

Haven't been here for a few days. Dealing with the boot on my left foot has been exhausting, specially since it tends to aggravate the pain in my right hip. Working with the velcro makes me cuss like crazy. I don't care cause there's no one else around. grin Yesterday got the results of abdominal CAT scan, which shows a small benign nodule protruding from my right kidney. Five years ago, I had to use a wheelchair for a month so I could stay off my left foot while it healed from a major break. It was nothing fancy. A simple borrowed, folding wheelchair that I borrowed and it met my needs. I'm not a physically strong person, never have been, and it took a lot to move myself in and out of the wheelchair. Hit myself numerous times, apparently bruising my right kidney. Cussed a lot then too. grin The CAT scan shows a small benign spot which, after talking with ortho yesterday and primary physician today, seems that the spot may be scar tissue from the bruise that is touching a nerve and that is causing the pain. Next step is physical therapy. The hope is the PT will identify the problem area and help my body learn to avoid it. So I feel a bit better now that things are starting to make sense.

Last few weeks, while getting used to the boot and knowing it has to come off while driving, some friends have provided transport to doc appts. They were more than willing, but it was humbling to have to ask. Once I had an early appt, so used a cab. Tried to get a cab again after appt. I was surprised to find the call was voice activated. The system correctly repeated the pick up address, than asked where exactly at the building the cab was to go. When I said 'entrance', the system asked to choose from a list of addresses, none of which were what I had originally said. I called several times, each time was worse. Luckily, being later in the morning, a friend was awake and came out. Yesterday, decided enough was enough and carefully did what I needed to do to drive myself to my appt. Though I still mildly cussed blech, getting boot on and off is getting a bit easier. See foot doc next week and pray it comes off.

Sending good thoughts to everyone else dealing with life's challenges.

Last week, a friend took tarp off my lawn chairs and put them in garage, so time for friends to come over and chat. Even if it rains, can still relax in comfort of garage. Still want to fix patio, but garage is better than nothing. yes

hugs to all wave2

Great news, Ana.

Finally we have an afternoon that's good for boating. No sun, but it's not windy and the tides work in our favour.

Still haven't seen any humpbacks, and the whale-watching boats are still going north to look for grizzlies, so I guess the humpies are not back yet. I think we'll just do a quick spin around Mittlenatch, which is a small island that hosts large bird nesting colonies and many, many Stellar and California sea lions. Still lots of migrating birds at this time of year, too.

Yikes! I was just reading the online news and there is a story about my next door neighbor having been scammed of his life savings by somebody who called him posing as an Avast employee and talking about a refund. They refunded him more than what they said and then wanted him to return the money, convinced him to allow remote access to his computer and wiped him out. His money disappeared in Bangkok. frown

I'm very grateful that my 89-year-old mother is utterly skeptical and just won't fall for any scam.

I'm constantly getting fake calls from "Canada Revenue Agency" threatening me with arrest if I don't "pay up" immediately (as in, get to the bank right now). The voice message starts with an assertion that the police are literally on the way to my house. About a year ago the voice messages started being recorded in Chinese, with ghastly loud music playing in the background. The calls are targeting recent immigrants, who might not understand that our tax agency doesn't work that way. No police, no screaming sirens, no night in a cold cell.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 05/12/21 05:14 PM

After having my computer frozen by a scammer and meeting one on a dating website, I've become very cautious. Thankfully, I didn't lose any money and a friend unlocked my computer, but I learned a lot. Main thing is, if you have to call a number or open a file to find out something, that's just a huge red flag. Every time you think you figured it out, they try something else. Once got a VM warning that I was going to get arrested for an IRS thing and gave a 'case' number and phone number to call to find out what it was all about. I hadn't gotten any mail from IRS which is how they contact you, not by phone, so I ignored it. But, it's all scare tactics. You just gotta not fall for it.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 05/12/21 08:17 PM

Some calls of that nature that I get here in the UK are "recordings" but if an actual person has the audacity to call I will sometimes join in and ask awkward questions or give ridiculous made up answers .... just to annoy them as much as they are annoying me !!

Then, after blocking the number from calling again, I report it to an appropriate SPAM address.

Not that that does much good because I already know most of those type of numbers can't be traced and/or dealt from within the UK thumbsdown

Connie, prayers for your friend!

I'm with you, oldbroad. My phone went off with a number in another state and of course, I didn't answer. I get scam calls like this every day. Then I got a voice mail that it was a friend who actually needed some assistance with her computer! But if they don't leave a voice mail, they are blocked and deleted.

Hi, soot, butterflybabe, Mad, Draclvr and family wave

Well, got a real surprise in the mail this morning! A citation for Jury Service. Oh, the joys! I will, of course, apply for exemption on the grounds of disability and also due to the fact that my husband is shielding. Nothing is ever simple though. I have to get a letter from my GP. He has to confirm that I'm a double amputee and that my condition is long-term and unlikely to change! rotfl I first did Jury Service over 10 years ago and attended every day for 5 days. On the fifth day I was summoned on to the jury only to have the case collapse within the first half hour due to evidence tampering!
There are no guarantees that I will be excused. Keep your fingers crossed everyone!

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 05/13/21 04:57 PM

MsMercury,

At my urging my husband went to our GP to look at a chronic recurring infection he has over the site of his surgery. It was badly inflamed again and making him very ill. He's been treated with a heavy-duty antibiotic and is much better, better appetite, much more clear-headed and he doesn't spend all day sleeping. There's no question that he's fading slowly (it is an extremely slow-growing cancer and hasn't done much growing for the last year), but he's still totally up for boating and visiting our neighbours and barbeques on the beach; just not every day. We're getting close to 7 years on with this disease, and I'm not counting him out just yet. Nobody expected him to last this long. It's clear that having a strong will to live is very important and he's willing to put up with a lot just to stay on this Earth a bit longer. The good days still outweigh the bad.

It's a gorgeous day here so I think we'll take a run down to Courtenay/Comox and hang out on the beach at Goose Spit., maybe take a picnic lunch.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 05/13/21 06:35 PM

Good afternoon. I'll take a cheese danish if there is one available please.

MsMercury - are you kidding me? Even with the issues you have going on in your life, you may still have to attend jury service? That is crazy.! My fingers are certainly crossed for you!!!

I hope you all enjoy your day!

I only wish I was kidding, oldbroad! With any luck there will be a letter from my GP waiting this afternoon.

Hagatha, happy to read your hubby is doing much better after your intervention. Hubby's cancer is high-grade and very agressive. He's still in a fair amount of pain and this after 5 rounds of radiotherapy and 6 rounds of chemo. He's on Zomorph slow-release twice a day and Oramorph which he can take every hour if he needs to. Some days he has 3 doses of Oramorph, some days 2 doses, and some days he doesn't need it at all. Sometimes he needs it through the night. He has to have a telephone consult with his GP with a view to weaning him off Oramorph. Zomorph has made a difference but not that much that he can do without Oramorph. We shall see. I'm so glad your hubby continues to beat the odds and may he continue to do so. I'm totally convinced this is due in no small part to the love and support he has from yourself. Thinking of you both always hearts

Hey ho, off I go! Got some ironing to get through and other odds and ends.

Wishing all of you a great day!

Much love,

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 05/15/21 05:32 PM

We're having a beautiful sunny day, but it's very windy so boating is off the table.

We're starting to see a few yachts now, a couple of big ones, although we haven't had anything in the "superyacht" class go through here for a couple of years now. A marine site I use tracks vessels that have transponders, so it's fun to see yachts here and then a few months later look up where they are in the winter. A lot of them end up in the Mediterranean, of course.

Still no humpbacks, but a large pod of white-sided dolphins went by yesterday. They hung around for a while in one of the fishing holes nearby. They really are the most sociable and friendly of marine mammals. We've encountered them many times out on the water and they actually do rush over to say hello and hang out with you.

Hagatha, your place sounds like such an idyllic spot to live in. I can just picture what you are describing! Sorry the wind is preventing you from getting some boating in.

Hi all, a quiet day spent with hubby and youngest son who is 'on shift' with us until Wednesday. He surprised us by cooking dinner. I really appreciated that as I had a very restless night last night with not much sleep. Thank goodness for my Kindle. I spent most of the night reading or playing my favourite word game.

When my friend Jennifer left yesterday, it was already 6:00 and too late to start anything for supper, so Hubby just ran in town and picked up a couple pizzas.

Doing some last minute bedding laundry and cleaning before my sister and my nephew arrive tomorrow evening. They are heading out from NW Iowa to spend a few days down here - I haven't seen any of my Iowa family for 3 1/2 years and I'm SO excited!

Hubby had his second COVID jab yesterday. He was fine until the middle of the night when he woke up shivering, teeth chattering and with a pounding headache. Poor soul couldn't warm up at all. I, on the other hand, had trouble regulating my inner thermostat and was rather too warm. I gave him a couple of Paracetamol which dealt with the headache but it really took about an hour for him to warm up. He's fine today. I'm still waiting for a home visit for my 2nd jab.
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 05/17/21 01:57 PM

Yay for your hubby! The second one is the one that really kicks in the immune system, so my hubby felt awful for about 12 hours too. Me, I had nothing with either one! I almost wish I HAD!

hagatha, I never watch daytime TV either, so I found it odd that the same shows are on every single day and even on the weekends! But since I don't watch, maybe they run 7 days a week. I would get bored - but then I'm someone who likes to be outside working if the weather permits.

I'm so excited that my sister and great nephew will be driving here from NW Iowa today! I haven't seen any of my Iowa family for 3 1/2 years - since my mom's funeral. They will be here for just a few days as Mason just graduated from high school and has to work this weekend. He's been working part time as a nurse's aide at the same nursing home my mom was in. I think he'll be working there full time before he heads off to the Univeristy of South Dakota for a nursing degree this fall.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 05/18/21 03:13 PM

Hey all, with any luck at all, I'll get this dang boot off my foot tomorrow. Then it's straight to the chiropractic to start putting me back together again. Had my annual appt with neurologist for my Sleep Apnea. She noticed change in sleep habits since boot has been on. Increased my air flow a bit. It's 9:50 am and, though tired, my brain is working well enough to do computer stuff. That's an hour earlier than usual.

My dog's health is deteriorating a bit again. He's still happy and relatively energetic but slowing down. Twice now, when dancing around eager to get to his food bowl, his front legs fold under him and his jaw hits the floor. First time was when the day care taxi brought him home and, before the driver could reach in to help him out, he jumped out of the cage and landed jaw first on the driveway. Other day, after driver got him into the house, and removed the leash, he turned around fast and same thing happened. The whole thing takes just a few seconds. No blood, recovers fast like nothing happened. He will not get up on the couch anymore. He looks like he wants to but is afraid to try. But he gets close enough, I can lean down and lift him up onto the couch. When he's home, his favorite and safest place is his own bed. Though I try not to think about it too much, I'm a realist, and am slowly preparing myself for what I will need to do for him as the disease progresses.

Drac, enjoy your trip!

rah Got rid of the boot yesterday rah

Doc went over with me shoe restrictions and medicine to help with arthritis in that area. He also added some PT, so that will be added to what is already scheduled for my hip. So June will probably be filled with chiro and PT appts. Thank goodness I'm retired and it's summer lol Dealing with PT and med issues while working was a royal thumbsdown

Last night dog did something weird. Typically, he eats 'dinner' around 5:30/6:00, so just after 8 pm he wants a snack. Around that time, if it hasn't happened, he'll come over to remind me. He didn't do that last night. Instead, even though I purposely made noise putting a few teeny cookies in his bowl, he didn't move. So, I went over and gently woke him. Told him his cookies were ready, and pointed in the direction of his bowl. Slowly he got up, ate and went back to bed and slept til 5 am. BUT, the day before, when brought home, I learned he'd had quite the day because there is a new member who is just 6 months old. Apparently, Huey had some fun chasing and playing with it. Glad he has fun over there grin

Unfortunately my guy hasn't had his shot yet. He has a severe needle phobia (he went 50 years without any kind of shot or blood test) and keeps putting it off. I worry about it, but I feel as though I need to start getting out of the house more before I go crazy. At some point I'll put my foot down because the last thing I need is another thing to worry about. My own health has been suffering and now that I've got my recent blood test results back I see that my Thyroid disease is not being properly controlled and I need to increase my medication. My cortisol levels are very high as well. I need a break.

His phobia is much, much worse than that, unfortunately. We have managed his blood tests by using numbing cream and a face mask, plus a ton of Ativan, but a jab in the arm is far more traumatic for him than a blood test.

He may have decided to just not ever get the shot. He doesn't really go anywhere any more. Because walking is very painful for him sometimes, I do all the shopping, get his beer and other happy stuff from the local government store and grab his medications from the pharmacy, so he isn't really at risk anyway. His choice, I guess.

But I went out today and actually shopped, put my dollars back into local stores. I'm very good at that normally grin , but I've been staying away for 18 months. Came home with a good haul. Shoes, kitchen stuff from the local gourmet store, a lovely summer dressing gown, some very tasty oils and vinegars, and prawns for dinner.

Well as you say hagatha if your guy hardly goes anywhere and you are vaccinated then it probably dosen't matter if takes the shot, too bad they can't come out with pill form.
Glad you finally enjoyed going out there to shop and buy stuff.
Take care, and I have cancelled the Virtual Cuffs cool, no worries for him.

Good morning, well my days have gotten busier. My farrier said to stall our horses, one is Insulin Resistant and his crest is really hard. The farrier is afraid of founder. Rosie the other is slightly but does not like not being near 8Ball. So they are stalled except for 5am to 10 am for a week or so. They if his neck is better I can let them out at night... So I am up early letting them out and it seems constantly mucking out their stalls! They are not happy campers. That plus the pollen count..... what can I say..... perhaps 2 donuts are in order.. woozy

Oh, Winfrey, I have been there and done that with one of my mares! Had to dry lot her. That is something you will have to watch for the rest of his life... founder is SO awful and hard to deal with. And if that coffin bone turns, they have to be put down. Happened to me. Good luck with yours - especially this time of the year, the grass can be dangerous.

It's not raining for a change here and my sister went back to Iowa. So, I'm heading out to plant my pepper plants and finish doing a few big pots. Then I just shudder to look at all the weeds just waiting for me!

Ana, that sounds awful - hope it's nothing serious.

oldbroad, I agree with you! I in a suburb northwest of Chicago, and got my AC started. It's not the heat as much as the humidity that insists on coming with it. yes slapforehead Temps in 80s in May is early. Hope it's not a sign of a hot, hot summer. But I'll take that over ice and snow any day.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 05/23/21 03:35 AM

98 degrees! I could not stand that. I do love living on the coast. We get a LOT of rain and gray, gloomy days and wind, but it never gets very hot. I'm originally from Toronto, so I do know what hot and humid feels like. Years ago I told my mother I would would only ever visit her in October, the only month in Southern Ontario that is remotely bearable. Spring (which is May) has bugs, bugs and more bugs, summer is deathly hot and horribly humid, October is lovely, and November through April are bitterly cold and horribly wet and mucky and dirty at the same time.

Winfrey, I do hope your equine babies get better.

A National Geographic cruise vessel just went past, going north. I guess they've resumed their tours, which are part cruise, part education. I'd love to go on one. Over the last year I've watched some pretty wonderful streaming TV. My favourites were Justified and Dark, followed closely by Sons of Anarchy.

Connie, if you like science fiction, Dark is fantastic, but it is very, very dark. You have to watch it in the original German with English subtitles as the dubbed English ruins the acting.

I also remember a long long time ago.....I was taking a horse husbandry lesson, one day it was mucking out the stall.
There were about ten of us, all sent to different stalls to do our first ever "muck out" and then put fresh bedding down, on finishing this task we were to meet at the stable office, on arriving there, last, I was so embarrassed, there was everyone else, neat as new pins, me, I was cover in bits of hay from head to foot. I still don't know how everyone else stay so clean????

Raining here, too. Miserable. I went out for a coffee and since the only seating is still the outdoors area I ended up sitting in my car listening to music. Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 05/28/21 04:40 AM

The song that really stood out for me is "Soon," by Yes. I hadn't heard that before, or I heard it back in the day and rejected it for being too wistful and dreamy. I don't necessary like all of their music but some of it, such as Owner of the Lonely Heart and Your Move/Seen All Good People, is on my current main playlist of faves.

Also rediscovered Agnes Obel's "Familiar," which I remember from the series Dark. Haunting song for a haunting series.

I was listening to my Nocturnes and Sonatas playlist the other day and Spotify sent me off on a recommendations playlist with some lovely stuff, notably Max Richter's "On the Nature of Daylight."

Kind of a nice change of pace from my usual Rock/Blues/Big Band and older Jazz.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 05/31/21 04:11 PM

Can't believe how tired my body was after getting that boot off. Trying to get other stuff done and frustrated when things become more complicated than they ought to be. Main concern right now is getting my driver's license renewed. Did it online but got letter from USPO questioning my address, which I can only think is because, since the last renewal, I added a PObox, and they won't deliver to a box. The area I live in is a cul-de-sac that has communal mailboxes. Mine is at the end of the block, which is a nuisance in the dead of winter when area leading to and surrounding it is messy with ice and snow. Decided I'd had enough of that, so checked at po and got a box which works well otherwise. Tried several times to get a DMV appt but couldn't do it. Recently learned that, as a senior, I can just go to the front door and ask for help, esp now that I'm back on my walker to help with balance and ease back pain. Guess I had to acknowledge the perks to 'admitting' my age lol

PT for my back and hip starts end of this week. Starting next week, PT 2 days and chiro 2 days. I really, really, really hope that after that I'll start being able to move around easier, so I can enjoy walking again. Now that boot is off my foot, also need to get caught up on other chores and doc appts that I've been putting off.

My pooch puppy is doing fine. Much skinnier than he used to be but still full of life and enjoying people.

We saw a baby humpback and its mother swim by just now! When they're tiny, they're still the size of a small bus, but compared to the adults they're ever so cute. They have to come up for air more often than the adults because their lungs are that much smaller, so they kind of bob along behind the adults. The vapour puffs when they blow are tiny, too.

We're dying to get out in the boat, but although the weather is perfect, the tides are against us.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 06/02/21 04:23 AM

We had an absolutely gorgeous day here, 76 degrees and sunny, sunny, sunny. We went out around noon and came back in at 8:30 this evening, which was hard on my husband but we had to wait for the tide to come in before we could get up the river.

While were out we saw two massive humpbacks, a pod of Pacific White-sided dolphins, Dahl's porpoises, and of course the usual Stellar sea lions and Harbour seals. The water was so calm we did a long tour north up to the inlets on the Mainland .

Close to shore on the Quadra Island side we saw something neither of us has seen before; the water was literally red with Krill for about a two-mile stretch, and the water was teeming with herring feeding on them. The sound of the herring jumping out of the water was like rain. The two humpbacks we saw were feeding along the edge of it, and there must have been 25 Bald Eagles diving for the herring.

Good morning everyone! I feel like I've been gone awhile! Life has been busy to say the least and on top of that I had food poisoning that was the gift that kept on giving. lol That's what I get for deciding to get a bowl of soup from Panera after being out in the cold and rain last Friday. I won't be eating from there again. I'll make my own.

I'm off to work, but I'll try and swing by tonight. Have a happy day all!

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 06/02/21 04:29 PM

NOTHING more miserable than food poisoning! How awful.

Cold and rain and more cold and rain. No pool, Colorado grandkids are getting bored. But we do have a little bit of excitement this morning! We’ve had a hen that went broody setting 15 eggs. This was day 21 and so far she hatched out 12 chicks. 1 egg wasn’t viable and the other two may or may not hatch over the next couple of days. Hubby had left her in this tiny little nest hardly big enough for her even after I suggested he put here in this large dog carrier. So one was pushed out of the nest and fell to the floor about 3 feet down. It was very cold, so after we moved her to the dog carrier – NOW he does what I suggested! – I put it under her, but it may have been out too long or even injured.

The kids are all quite excited. We’re going to just leave her alone until this afternoon and then let them go out and check them out. For the next few days, they’ll pretty much stay under the hen.

Good question with the chicks, Ana! Yes and no! Half of them will grow up to be roosters, we will need to make decisions about them in 6 months or so. I have three roosters right now and there is relative peace as the other two respect the head rooster, Bob.

But for now, they are adorable little balls of black and tan fluff about the size of a large cotton ball!

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 06/06/21 04:56 PM

Hi Everyone,

Well, driver's license chore done. rah Headed to front door of facility, followed directions to red stop sign for seniors and handicapped. Was told to go to Manager's line. Next staff had me take a quick pic, signed some paperwork, not a colored temp license and was told actual license would be in mail soon. Apparently, they wanted proof that the p.o. box was assigned to my address. Whole thing took 15 minutes. I gotta remember to take advantage of the perks of my age.

Started PT on Friday, lots of stuff to work on. I have 2x week appts thru mid July. I was lucky to get all appts with the person I worked with a few years ago. She told me's booked cause people are dealing with physical PSTD from being quarantined. Bodies aren't used to basically sitting in one place all day without having to transport to stores or work.

Always amazes me how we go from freezing cold in Feb to blazing hot a few months later. We've got daily temps in high 80s, and it isn't even officially summer yet.

Ana, I've had food poisoning too and didn't report it either. It's hard to prove. Got it from a place I'd been enjoying food from for several years. Haven't been back there since. Periodically, I remember how good it tasted, but can't bring myself to eat it again.

Pup is slowing down. Sleeps most all day on Sunday when play care is closed. He's not skeletal, but leg bones are becoming more prominent, and I notice his leg doesn't lift as high to go to bathroom. I may have mentioned something about this before, but day care told me they have a new 6 month old client who has been playing with Huey, poking and chasing him around. At least he's having fun. puppy

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 06/07/21 04:48 PM

Thanks Drac! Another factor may a sleep issue. Neurologist having me come in to try on some other masks. Had my current 'brand' several years now but now air keeps leaking out. I don't hear it but stats show on data rad out. If a new mask works better, that may also help my body recover faster and better. Even the tiniest bit of lack of healthy sleep slowly deteriorates the body. Couldn't get in for that appt until end of June, but that'll come soon enough. I had having to take so much time with doc appts, but if the result is feeling much better, and back to when I could walk without pain, that's all I ask.

Have a great day, everyone!
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 06/07/21 05:20 PM

Good sleep is definitely huge in healing and general well-being. Sleep issues are even related to things like high blood pressure. I totally feel your pain with all the doctor's appointments! There have been weeks where hubby and I check the calendar not to see IF we have doctor's appointments, but how many! But once you get through them all, it's worth it to feel well. Hubby is having a ton of them to deal with back pain... another MRI today. I have a friend who never went to the doctor because she was "never sick." When she started having a lot of fatigue and issues with lymph nodes, I nagged her until she went. Turns out she has CLL, a type of lymphoma and has probably had it for a long time. She had her last chemo Friday and her bloodwork is now perfect. However, during all this she also found out she has had uncontrolled diabetes for a long time. She is finally getting some control over that, but still has a long way to go with her blood sugar. Since she is the sole caregiver for about 50 special needs animals, it's critical she stay well! Plus, she will be 70 this year, so this is when stuff starts happening! I'd rather stay ahead of it like you are. I think she has also learned her lesson.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 06/07/21 07:40 PM

I'm glad your sleep is being looked after now. Sleep is pretty much every thing. I've always had bad insomnia, since I was a kid. Eventually it got so bad my doctor gave me sleeping pills so I could work. Once I retired I was determined to sleep naturally. I did all the things you're supposed to do, but it t never happened. I was a two-to three-hour a night sleeper. I got to the point where I felt I couldn't drive safely and I was having severe dizzy spells and blood sugar crashes. My current doctor put his foot down and put me back on sleep medication.

Not being able to sleep is the pits. I haven't slept well for months, often getting by on 2 hours max. I don't nap during the day but it made no difference. Even getting out during the day for some fresh air did no good. Last night, however, I slept for a solid 12 hours! Couldn't believe it. I guess my body had just had enough of sleepless nights. I'm not surprised your sleep is bad considering the stress you must be under now. Has your doctor suggested any medications? I know that I would have collapsed a long time ago if my doctor hadn't insisted that I take sleep medication so that I can deal with being the primary caregiver for my husband. It makes such a difference.

Aww. So cute. Do you breed them for eggs? All along the backroads here people sell fresh eggs. We bought some once and my husband freaked because they were all different shapes and sizes and colours. I think it was a little bit too close to the actual hen's anatomy for him. lol But they were tasty.

Still too windy for boating. This is shaping up to be just like last year, where we only managed to get out about 15 times all summer.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 06/09/21 04:34 PM

Since several of you posted about the importance of sleep, let me share with you bit more of my 'story'. I began having major problems over 20 years ago. At first it was mainly insomnia brought on menopause and restless legs (inherited from my mom). I was using OTC and then was given a script to help calm my legs, which helped for many years. Then, at annual physical, my physician was concerned about how tired I looked and suggested I get tested for Sleep Apnea. My initial treatment started with a simple mask that covered just my nose, and was later switched to a full-face mask.

I spent 5-10 years trying to find a mask and headgear that were comfortable. My cranium is small. What fits me best is a small adult mask and child size headgear. But the equipment is not sold by the piece. Everything is in sets, and parts are not interchangable. The challenge was finding a way to adjust the straps from the headgear so that the mask was secure and relatively comfortable, without the bottom strap irritating the top of my neck. It wasn't until 2 years ago that I had the bright idea to put on a shower cap before the putting on the mask so that the headgear goes over the cap, so I feel the cap material and not the strap. Hugh difference!

I've dealt with 4 different neurologists and tried/worn about 10 different masks. The air machine itself used to weigh a ton and the computer chip had to be brought to the doc at each visit. Now it's about 3 lbs and data is recorded and downloaded via internet. Doc can pull up my record and make adjustments without my having to visit the office. That is brand new within the last few years.

I learned that it's the quality, not amount of sleep that is important. You can sleep 9 hours, but if your brain keeps waking up, it doesn't go into REM mode which is deep relaxing dream sleep, then it's not healthy. My first sleep test showed that I was getting a just a small percentage of healthy sleep, so my brain and body weren't hardly resting at all. One of my neurologists told me that he had patients concerned that they weren't or couldn't sleep more than 3 or 4 hours. He said if you feel rested and wide awake the day, than that's all you need.

I've had people say 'how can you wear that thing' or 'I could never wear that thing'. My response is, if I don't wear it, I can't think, my body is sluggish and, basically, it leads to a slow death. No, thanks. Believe me, I can tell the difference. I finally purchased a special back up battery for my air machine. Though it's rare where I live, if the electricity goes out, I'll loose sleep, and that's scary.

A few years ago I drafted a small book about my experiences and frustrations with the whole system of finding the right mask, as well as specialists I've dealt with. Now that I'm retired, and I'm hearing more talk about it, I'm starting to get inspired pull that draft out again and get moving on it. There may be books about the clinical side, but a personal story always tells a different side.
Posted By: hagatha

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 06/09/21 05:40 PM

Butterflybabe, finishing that book would be wonderful from a personal perspective, and it could be so valuable for other people. I don't have apnea and I've had trouble sleeping since I was about 7 years old, so my insomnia is chemical in nature, some hormone or gland is off-kilter and nobody can figure it out.

I love writing, though I've let it slide over the last few years. I've got a full draft of a novel sitting around on a disc somewhere, though I'm sure I'd be horrified at it now!

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 06/09/21 06:07 PM

Good Day everyone.

Danish for me please, connie.

Cute chicks Drac.

One of my biggest problems sleeping (I have a few) is my cat. Every time I fall into a good sleep she starts pawing at my eyes. I'm thinking it's the eye movement under the lid. Anyway, she is dangerous as she doesn't always just use her paw but likes to stick her claws in. I get afraid to shut my eyes. The other day she rudely woke me up digging her claw into my head up near my temple area. If she does that to my eye, I'm in trouble!

Many moons ago I started trying to write my memoirs. I wish I would have kept at it but that was a lot of work. smile
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 06/09/21 06:33 PM

oldbroad, what if you wore one of those eye masks at night? I'm afraid THAT kitty would be sleeping elsewhere for me!

A good friend thought he had urinary problems as he was up a dozen times a night. Checked prostate and no problems there. He also had to take multiple naps every day. A sleep study diagnosed sleep apnea and once he put the mask on, he no longer got up to pee all night long! His wife also said the epic snoring stopped.

oldbroad, I've had to banish the cat from the bedroom. She's as good as gold for a few hours, and then she launches herself off the bed, which wakes me up. Also, the little jerk will come and sniff my face or tap me on the cheek if she wants food.

Quiet day here, Rosie had a visitor yesterday. He stayed there while I opened the door to feed Rosie.. you can see her in the background. I named him Ralph.

Oh, I LOVE Ralph! Last night we were sitting outside watching the chickens and cats and saw a frog come jumping out of the tall grass to where Dave had mowed and then just sit there. A couple of minutes later, a black snake came out of the tall grass and headed for the frog. So that explained that! It was a pretty leopard frog, so I walked down there and the snake beat it back to the brush pile and the leopard frog hopped off to safety!

One of the times I lived in N.Ireland I worked at a poultry centre where farmers brought their poultry and eggs - and every time a new batch of chicks or ducklings arrived in their wooden crates they were temporarily brought to my office for a few hours.

So cute !!

But I couldn't believe how much noise they were capable of when they all got going together lol

They are something else, aren't they! Very noisy for such tiny little creatures!

Ana, I can understand how your workday would be affected without a good night's sleep.
Hagatha, I haven't contacted my GP about my sleep issues yet but I think it's time I did. Last two nights were same old, same old with just a couple of hours. Hope the wind dies down and you can get out in your boat.
Thanks L4L, it did make a big difference.
Thanks Connie.
Awww, cute chicks Draclvr. Hope you can keep them safe from the snakes.
Butterflybabe, go for it with your book. As Hagatha says, it would be an invaluable source for other people.
oldbroad, that kitty would be put out of my room! Naughty kitty! lol
Hi family, Winfrey (don't like frogs!) and Mad; hope you are all well.

Some washing and ironing today; Diana's here until Friday/Saturday.

Have a great day everyone.

Much love,

Mary hearts

Hot and steamy here again. Waiting on a part for the pool that is supposed to be here today. I think I'm gonna need a dip after working outside today!

I wear a Fitbit watch and like it for the sleep tracking as much as anything. It shows you when you were in light, deep and REM sleep. Night before I spent a lot of the night in light sleep and not as much in REM sleep. So, last night I exceeded REM sleep recommendations by a ton! It's very interesting.

You should definitely ask your doctor about your sleep issues, Mary. Good sleep makes such a difference in how you feel and your overall health.

I agree, butterflybabe... go for that book!

Picking up and taking my friend to the doctor later this morning. She had her last chemo last Friday and has bloodwork and sees the doctor this morning. So far everything looks really good. Now, if she could just get her diabetes under control. It went untreated for so many years it's proving quite stubborn.

After that, it's date night with hubby! Dinner out somewhere and maybe a stop at the American Legion for a couple of beers and then home early. Made excellent headway on the weeds this week, but need to hit it again tomorrow.

Have a good day, everyone!

Good morning and Happy Friday ya'll puppy

Waiting on the fridge repair guy. Have waited for weeks and of course, on the day he is supposed to come (he no showed last time), it is temping just fine :rotfl;

Hot and humid and rainy here.

I'll be spending the day doing odds and ends, paying bills, doing laundry, washing and spinning large amounts of greens, and reading Way of Kings and listening for the door.

Hope you all have a most wonderful day! wavegirl

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 06/11/21 09:17 PM

More Juneuary weather here, cold and windy and rainy.

I managed to pot our back balcony plants before the rain started. This year I decided to forego annuals in favour of container perennials like Hostas and large Sedums, and chose dark purple and pale green foliage colours to keep it simple. It looks pretty nice if I do say so myself. We have an outdoor carpet coming, too, but I'm not sure how it will look. It's one of those fake worn-out Persians, which can look really nice in the right settings, but I think I may have chosen the wrong colours. We'll see when it gets here.

I actually went out and looked for it. Can't find it around here though. Too hot outside to do much of anything. I'd REALLY like to tackle the weeds in my front flower beds! And to think I just did a laundry load of sweatshirts from a week ago! Hope it's the last one till fall!

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 06/12/21 06:25 PM

I think you can get Scottish Breakfast tea at Amazon Drac. And, yes, the weather this year is pretty weird so far isn't it? I think I had my heat on at the beginning of this month, at least at the end of May. Now it is hot, hot, hot and humid! And very, very dry (no rain). It seems like we've had rain in the forecast for weeks but nothing has fallen in my area of the city.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 06/12/21 06:41 PM

It was 34 degrees here the other morning and later this week it is supposed to hit 106 degrees. Having a low humidity is the saving grace in this situation.

We're in the mid to low 50's here, with rain, rain, rain. Typical weather for us here, though the wind is much worse than usual. The sun peeks out, looks around, and decides to go back to bed.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 06/12/21 07:44 PM

Well, I talked the rain up. We are having a little right now. It is quite dark out and thunder is rumbling, but so far the rain is light. I'm not complaining as I do not want flooding but I also know we need some rain.

I thought I read that it was very hot out west so I'm surprised to hear it was only 34 degrees Marian.

I do not like when the wind whips up too much hagatha.

It's been a really hot week here to work outside. 90's and humid. I welcomed todays thunderstorms, except that I was with my boss and our dogs about an hour away from home hiking and letting the dogs swim. We made it back to the car in time!

Hope you all are having a great weekend! I have a Bernese Mountain Dog here as a boarder, she's always such a joy to have.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 06/13/21 06:00 PM

Ana, I know we both live in Chicagoland area, and we could definitely use more rain where that came from. I haven't been able to put out my whirlygigs cus the ground too dry.

Hagatha, check out that book draft. Who knows you might want to improve on it.

Much as I love my pooch, he's caused me to rearrange my sleep habits. I'm not a morning person at all. Can't start thinking until at least 7. But he's up at 5:30 for breakfast. Course, that's after sleeping form 8:30 pm the previous night. HAH

Thanks everyone for your supportive push on writing about sleep apnea. Truth, I've got about 5 other books I want to write about different phases of my life, and maybe even a couple of fiction. Got to concentrate on my gaming right now. Always put playing on the side; retirement demands some attention to that first. I recently learned about an 86 yr old woman who just authored a book about her life as a nun. She chose that profession during 1940s, and their rules made her whole life go a different path than she had wanted. I don't plan to wait that long, still impressive that she did it at that age.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 06/13/21 08:36 PM

hi butterflybabe , yes good luck with writing about sleep apnea, my brother has that and from I hear it is a Real Adventure re: Mask, water tank, etc.

As for your Pooch we have had dogs and cats most of our life and we had dogs waking up early like you mention, and you also mentioned he or she sleeps from 8:30 PM on, what we did is change their sleeping habits, when we see that they are going to retire to early, we would wake the up and make them walk around, play with them and made sure they didn't sleep until later. Doing this does not harm them unless they are very Old or very sick, all our dogs lived a Long and Happy life and so did we.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #2 - 06/14/21 01:17 AM

butterflybabe, I have dog boarders here that come from all kinds of households with different morning and evening routines, I have them switched to my schedule by the 3rd day tops. First thing to go, is he isn't eating at 5:30am. lol If they have to go potty, that's one thing, but no big interactions, just do your thing and go back to bed. Feed him at his old time. He will stop waking you if he doesn't get what he wants.
