Good morning, I hope today smiles on you all despite storms and covid-19 surges.

I still relish in particular one of soot's posts on the previous thread, lending itself to misinterpretation (in my warped mind) to create a new GB personality wink

I agree with Mad Hagatha you are headed in the right direction ... keep smiling

... and I wonder how Drac (aka the human dynamo) even has time to post, let alone so interestingly!

Probably too wet and windy here today for the garden, so I may even get repair and redecoration of our conservatory a step closer to completion (after several years of water ingress and other damp problems), but strong coffee, porridge and a hot buttered crumpet first. catrub

Lex, you started my day out laughing! I don't know... I rather like the "Mad Hagatha" name!

Going to a memorial service for a very good friend today. He was a local veterinarian and in addition to hunting moose, morel mushrooms, turkeys, was a real conservationist. He was into quail habitat restoration and his farm was recognized as a Quail Habitat Management Area. His fish fries and rabbit cooks were famous! His wife was the food editor at the St. Louis newspaper and she writes many articles. She was good enough friends with Julia Child to have her call one Sunday morning. Her husband will be greatly missed.

Mad Hagatha is probably one of my alter-egos anyway. grin

It's a positively beautiful day today, with sun pouring in the windows for the first time in ages. We're firmly settled into our winter pace, which is glacially slow. First thing in the morning, which for us is around 8 am, I open the bedroom door to two hungry little faces looking up at me, followed by two hours of madly frisky cats racing around the house while we drink coffee, then brunch, then an afternoon of gaming or soccer, or both (the cats, obviously, do not partake of the latter activities although Willow is a dab hand with a felt ball). It's all very boring and nice.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 12/09/21 04:08 AM

We call it the "Nutty Kitty" hour. They are definitely having fun together, no question about it. The SPCA called a couple of days ago to see how he was doing. I'm glad they follow up like that. When we got our Rachel 23 years ago, a woman from the SPCA even showed up at our door, about six months after we got her, to see how she was doing.

Yes, boring is good. We've had quite enough excitement these last couple of years. John is on a three break from chemo just to give hima chance to breathe a bit. Only 5 more sessions and then he gets three months off. The blood clot in his leg seems to have dissolved quickly as the edema is completely gone, so that's some good news.

when I put out my dogs at 5 this a.m. it was 47 degrees on my thermometer and 45 minutes later it was 37. Now we have snow and it is cold! but, after looking at the devastation in Kentucky, I guess I will put up with this unpredictable weather. I pray for the people devastated by these terrible tornadoes.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 12/11/21 03:19 PM

mbday, don't you live in the south somewhere!! It was just awful here last night. We were on the edge of it, but there was at least one tornado on the ground just a few miles from here. An Amazon warehouse was hit just about 50 miles east of here. The pictures of the damage are just unbelievable. So far at least 2 deaths there... there were many people trapped in the debris and search and rescue is still ongoing this morning.

The temps dropped from nearly 70 yesterday to 36 last night. When it is that warm in December, you can count on bad storms.

Today is cookie baking with my 15 year old granddaughter!

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 12/15/21 05:50 PM

Hi Everyone,

Sorry it's been a while. My back and hips have been bringing me down. My chiro referred me back to my acupuncturist for treatment. About 20 years ago, fell down few stairs and landed on the basement floor of the bungalow my ex and I owned. Got bruise on my right butte, which developed into a hematoma and is now scar tissue. That old scar tissue is now pressing on nerves. Acupuncturist says she can do something about it. She and my chiro have spoken so they are in sync about the treatment. Told my doc I'm sick of it all and want to be able to at least walk pain free at my high school reunion next May. He assures me I will be able to dance. (BTW, I fell down those stairs a few times and, though we had discussed that it needed to be done, a railing was never installed until he had to have the house inspected for our divorce. I was livid when I saw it.)

Part of the problem is that I need lose weight. Tended to be on the thin side when I was younger. Aging and life's stress, esp last couple of years (of course) have left me heavier than I've ever been. I'm not a cook, and my back/hips limit my standing to just a few minutes. Just straightening my kitchen is a challenge. I don't like a lot of spices, and have a really hard time trying new things. So been looking for a meal delivery service. I've tried and dismissed the offerings of several different companies, even one some people raved about. Then my chiro's asst told me about one she's using that has a better, more nutritious menu with more variety. The meals are mainly what I consider lunch and dinner. The company adjusts what they offer to the meals you purchase. They seem to order a lot of dishes that are more palatable with simple ingredients. They offer 'lots' of 4 to 21 meals. My first 6 meals will arrive next Monday.

Lots things I want to do but my energy level is very low. Just enough to take care of household stuff and play my games. Hopefully, between the acu and better meals, I'll start to feel better.

My dog is doing better than me! Though he's gotten used to stiffness and balance issues, those legs still move pretty quick. Sunday I ordered a new microwave which. to my surprise, the company delivered right away.
At my request, the deliverer took a few steps into my home to put it down rather than leave it outside. He got a kick out of Huey who came out to see who was in the house. But then I had to move Huey away cause he realize the front door was open, and given the chance, he would have gone out to look around. The way my home is made, I don't have a view to the street, only to the yard area, so he doesn't get to see that much of what is going on outside.

Enjoying the easy, snowless though chilly days which are unusual for this time of year. Bought a set of Carol Burnett shows and plan to enjoy them during Christmas which I can't believe is around the corner.

Take care!!

Butterflybabe, I know how stress can cause weight gain, especially as we get older. I've never weighed more than 118 pounds in my life, but a couple of years of COVID laziness, my husband's chronic illness, and a relatively poor diet have me tipping the scales at 136 pounds and I feel like a blimp. And it defintely affects my energy level. I'd be interested in a meal service, too, just to make sure my house was stocked with decent food, but our town is too small.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 12/16/21 04:40 PM

Off to take WIllow to the vet this morning. The little monster has no idea what's coming -- she'll be put on a diet, for certain. Since we stopped going for walks her waistline has steadily increased and she isn't the sleek beauty she once was. And she'll probably have shots, too. There will be some sulking.

Dude has finally worked out how to use the cat flap onto the large balcony on the back of our house. Unfortunately, he can't figure out how to get back in the same way. lol We've come to the conclusion that while he's a very handsome boy, and very, very sweet, he's not exactly the smartest cat we've ever met. Part of that, I think, is his life in a small apartment, where he wouldn't really have had many learning experiences and I suspect he spent a lot of time hiding under a bed. Hopefully opening up his world a bit will spark him. He's already going bonkers over having access to two outdoor spaces.

The cats are doing well together, only WIllow is exhibiting what I would call friendly dominance. If she was a cartoon cat, the text bubble over her head would read, "HI THERE!!!!!!! WANNA PLAY?" in giant letters, as she saunters up to Dude with her tail up and her ears forward. He usually backs away, but sometimes I catch them playing together, and I've noticed him tentatively sneaking upbehind her, though he always chickens out.

I have an outdoor cat who is also not the brightest bulb in the box! Wally was dumped off here at about 4 months old. Took us two months to be able to make friends and get him neutered. Since then I've come to realize that although he is a good barn cat, he's just not too smart!

Both balconies are on the second floor. One of them has a maple tree growing right next to it, but although the tree is mid-height, the higher branches are too small for a cat to stand on (Willow tried once. It was a disaster involving shrieking and scratches). Just to be sure, we put a plexiglass barrier on top of the glass railings that were already there to prevent any misadventures.

Willow is pretty smart, but my last cat, Rachel, was the smartest cat I ever had. She was genius-level smart, for a cat. I swear she understood everything I said to her. She could get into anything. No drawer or cubboard was too difficult for her to open, even ones with tiny little round knobs. It was almost like she had opposable thumbs.

The holiday madness has gripped our town and the Save-On parking lot was so crowded I went shopping for the other goodies for John on my list -- the local craft beer and the other kind of comestible that is legal here -- and went back later for some baked goodies and staples to tide us over for the next few days. We aren't doing Christmas at all this year. It's just too much for us. We'll have a nice quiet evening with a movie and maybe a roast chicken, or perhaps we'll join our neighbours for a vegan Christmas dinner.

We, too, are not "doing" Christmas. G'kids are big and it's son's only day off. So we are each doing our own thing. Which means hubby and I will relax in the bedroom and watch movies and read. I most likely will emerge to cook a time or two. We have company coming the next day so it may not be as relaxing as I'd like and we have prep work to do. My little house will have 12 people in it, but as it's my son and a g'daughter we've never met, that's a good thing. Once they leave, I will be traveling to Florida to spend a long time with my daughter who is ready to pop with baby #3. puppy

We've got freezing rain, and today we have to brave the holiday crowds in the parking lots and stores just so that we can have a few basics in the house for the next week. The last two times I went out I literally could not find a parking spot at the main grocery store.

After that, though, it's just us, some holdiay treats, and a cozy fire.

There's always Amazon. They have it on the Canadian site, so you'll have it on the US site for sure.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 12/24/21 05:46 AM

Yes, it is on Amazon but between the reviews of it being stale and my own experience receiving something stale from them before, I wouldn't want to risk spending my money on it there. I've bought it from the grocery store where it is refrigerated in the past and it was sometimes stale from there also. It's kind of cardboardy when it's stale. frown12

We had a very nice afternoon with friends out on the patio outdoors at Elmer's, a local historic bar, today. It was just shy of 70°! Home for home made pizza tonight... just got my dough together to rise for a couple of hours.

Weather is heading for the crapper tomorrow! 13° tomorrow night with freezing rain, snow and other ickiness. Going in town tomorrow morning before it all starts for a steak and bloody Mary breakfast at the American Legion. Then I'm making a big roaster of ham and beans and a pot of Texas Style Black Eyed Peas from a recipe I got from Melia. We'll take those back in about 5:00 and then just hole up for a few days!

And a good Sunday morning to one and all: my current brew is from beans called Nuclear coffee, following on from Strong George (I think produced in Germany), but my local supermarket (Sainsburys) actually carries a pretty good fair-trade strength 5 coffee at a very modest price which hits the spot quite nicely!

I got shots and some med for the strep which I had a reaction to Had to stay very close to the bathroom for 3 days. Temp is gone but the cough is not. They finally changed my cough medicine to some so strong I don’t dare try to drive…. I was tested for Covid and it came back negative Whatever this is I don’t want it again … what a way to end 2021. 😁

We got our boosters a couple of months ago... we're protecting ourselves as much as we can. We're both in our 70's and plenty of pre-existing conditions merit caution. I could name 50 people we know who got COVID over the holidays. Thankfully, they all had relatively mild symptoms... miserable, but at least not hospitalized.

It's finally back above freezing here and I'm going to head in town for groceries. Supposed to get 6" or more of snow Thursday!

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 01/04/22 06:25 PM

Hello friends, and a very HNY

The New Year's weekend led me to make a hard decision. My dog's play care place closes on holidays, which meant that, this past weekend, his bathroom needs were in my hands. New Year's day not a big deal, but Sunday and Monday were tough. Both days he was frantic to go out before 5 am. I would have been ok with him doing it in the house, but, in the 7 years I've had him, he's only done it a handful of times. My fear of walking in the snow with my walker, forced me to limit where he could go. Unlike previous times, he wasn't picky and just did what he had to do. I relieved yet very aware that his doing so was a change. I had also been noticing behavior changes suggesting he was in beginning stages of dementia. Just standing, looking confused and hesitating. Watching him and considering my own physical challenges, I realized my ability to care for him had changed.

Not knowing what else to do, I sadly decided to let him go. Yesterday morning, while I was on the phone making arrangements, the day care manager came to pick up Huey. He left with the dog knowing Huey wouId be euthanized today. A few hours later, the play care manager called with a proposal. We discussed my situation as well as the realities of Huey's aging process. He asked if I would be willing to let the day care place adopt Huey and care for him until the end. He assured me that Huey is considered part of their family. Even so, I was stunned. He said he'd never done it before, but taking care of dogs is the basic nature of his business. I admitted to him that part of my hesitation of putting Huey down, was knowing his staff loves and cares for Huey as much as I do. Yet, I needed to let the idea sink in. A few hours later, I called to accept the proposal. He assured me I have 'visiting' rights in that I can go see him any time, or, if I prefer, they'll bring him over to see me in my home. The place itself is less than a mile from my home.

After calling to cancel the euthanizing appt, I sobbed and laid down for an hour. Last night was weird. My time didn't revolve around feeding Huey. I slept 9 hours, had breakfast, slept for another hour. I'm sad for me, happy for Huey and relieved all at the same time.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 01/05/22 08:34 PM

thanks so much Mad, Drac, soot, connie.
Hardest part was accepting my own limitations. Huey's new home is pretty much one of a kind out here. There are other dog play centers around here, but none of them offer the doggie 'taxi' transportation services. A few times there were management issues going on that caused a high staff turnover. After talking with the owner, and looking around at options, I stayed with them because of the taxi service. They offer full grooming, as well as at least one treat a day. Holidays, owners pay a little extra for pictures which they set up cute backdrops, and special eatable goodies for the dogs; and owners receive their own goodie bag with helpful products, incliuding a coupon for freebees. All the food they serve is natural. On any given day, there are anywhere from 10 to 30 dogs. They have caged areas to separate the dogs by size; tiny to medium, and large to huge. Depending on space, some mediums will be put in with the large ones. I've seen little all kinds of dogs from 20 to 100 lbs go in there.

The owner established the business in honor of his daughter who loves dogs. That was may years ago. She's older now and no longer interested in the business, yet daddy won't sell it. I think a lot more could be done with it but he won't spend the money. The most recent manager took over a few years ago and things have been better managed, and I've learned at lot from him as to how things run over there. Some employees were let go because they turned out to not be part of the team when it came to doing chores like cleaning. Working there is more than just a matter of playing with the dogs all day.

In my mind, I've decided items to be packed up and given to them, but not ready to do that yet. The manager assured me there was plenty of time, and some of the daily 'have to' items he either has in stock or, at this point in Huey's life, doesn't really matter too much. Only 'have to' now is his heartworm meds.

I was thinking this morning that with all the crazy, upside down things happening these days, something like this reminds me that there are really good, caring people in this world. Helps me feel God saying, 'Don't worry, I got this! You did your work. He'll be fine until it's time to call him home.'

Woke up at 4:15 this morning and went to fetch the horses from the pasture and of course they were at the bottom. We brought them into the barn, picked their hoofs and filled their hay bags and put them in their stalls where they will stay until we can figure out this awful weather. Glad we don't have to go anywhere.

Yes, he does. We've noticed that he follows Willow's lead when it comes to navigating life around here, and Willow LOVES the snow. She pounces in it and snowplows through it and generally has a great time out there. Dude was a lot more cautious, but he's been outside several times, mostly following Willow's little paths through the snow. I don't think he's ever been in it before so it's a new experience for him. He's been very talkative all day.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 01/09/22 03:25 AM

Cat food, medicine and coffee are the ones that will drive me out the door. I'm even considering ordering my coffee from my favourite roastery in Vancouver and setting it up as a monthly delivery. I'm also consdering on-line purchasing for the cat food, since Pet Smart delivers. John's various medications, unfortunately, I have to pick up in person because we have to sign for it, or at least the pain meds.

It warmed up about two hours ago and now it's all melting. It's supposed to freeze again tomorrow, so the roads will be ice rinks. Literally nothing would put me in a car under those conditions.
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 01/09/22 04:06 AM

Yes, I use Chewy.com for most of my cat food. The barn cat's dry food we still purchase in big 20 pound bags and keep in a metal trash can in the barn. But the other cats all have medical needs cat food which I pay a small fortune for! But Chewy delivers it to my door. Also have them deliver my kitty litter too. No more lugging those heavy boxes around!
Posted By: hagatha

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 01/09/22 04:47 AM

Now with the two cats the bills are pretty large and I make multiple trips to Comox every month to shop for them. It would be a lot easier having everything delivered here. Willow is overweight and I've weaned her from dry food, but she's the clsssic fussy eater and there are a lot of heated discussions at feeding time because she hates the high-protein canned foods. Fortunately Dude is fairly easy-going about what he eats so I've already got him on a high-protein diet, but Willow is a carbohydrate addict and also the most willful cat I've ever had. I've moved her over to pouch food, but it's also pretty carby. She needs to be on the Catkins diet.

It's absolutely pouring today, and pitch black at 8 am. A few swigs of chai and then I'll brave the weather to take out the garbage. And then I'm going to re-start my daily bike-riding because I have gained way too much weight this year. scared

We decided that we'll ask the contractor to take the %$(*& heat pump out. It's never going to be okay for us. It's simply in the wrong location, you can hear it everywhere in the house, and it should never have been recommended in the first place - there is no suitable location on our property, and they should have told us that. I originally wanted to add air conditioning to our existing furnace -- which no longer exists - and that's what we're going to ask for. But we've made it through using just our gas fireplace, in-floor heating and one free-standing oil heater, so they can take their pump away any time.

So now the West and North East Coast of Vancouver Island are under a tsunami warning because of a volcanic eruption in Tonga. Fortunately we're far enough down Island that we'll be okay, but I suspect we'll see a big, big tidal surge today.

I woke up very early this morning and am enjoying a cup of coffee with one cat snoring at my feet in front of the fire, and the other cat racing around at high speed. I think Dude is trying to get Willow to play -- he keeps puffing up like a Halloween cat, the way kittens do when they're pretending to be fierce, and dancing crabwise in front of her. But of course she's just a lazy girl and doesn't even open an eye.

The SPCA had his personality all wrong. He is basically an affectionate nine-year old kitten. He reminds me so much of my previous cat, Rachel.

I think having a 2-storey house to run around in instead of a small one-bedroom apartment is a huge deal for him, as are the two balcony areas, one of which looks out over a bird-filled slope down to the water, and the other which looks out directly into a Maple tree at eye level. Being outside really winds his watch, and judging from his initial shock and joy at being let out, he's obviously never had an outdoor space before. We have a cat flap onto the bigger deck and he can come and go as he pleases, so he has a little bit of independence, too, even if it is an enclosed upper balcony. The kittenish puffing up and sideways dancing is new this week. He's got a lot more confidence now, and is finally prepared to give Willow a swat when she gets too pushy and in his face -- she means well, but she's friendly-dominant and sometimes she's just plain rude, like pushing her nose right up to his or sneaking up behind him to sniff his rear end. I'm glad to see him set some boundaries. I suspect that his former people worked, and we're home all the time, so he gets lost of attention. Anyway, he is a lovely little guy and I feel very lucky that we have him.

Hagatha, that sounds like the perfect day to me! The 4th season of Ozark started on Netflix Friday! Going to make a good German casserole this afternoon. Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 01/25/22 03:57 PM

I woke up early this morning because it wa so cold! The temperatures have been positively warm of late, but I think we're headed back into another cold snap. It's been foggy, too.

After some discussion we agreed to let the HVAC company come back and tinker with the heat pump. They feel they can make it quieter. If so, we'll keep it, and that way we don't have to engage in a legal battle that neither of us wants, and we'll have our air conditioning when we need it in the summer.
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 01/25/22 04:56 PM

Yeah, I'd give them a chance since they DID promise it would be quiet! Good luck. Back to really cold here too. Supposed to be down close to 0°F tonight.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 01/25/22 07:38 PM

I hope that breathing resolves itself quickly, Ana! My sister's neighbor up in Iowa had a severe case of COVID pneumonia a year and a half ago and still can't breathe in the cold or the extreme heat. Which is a problem because it's REALLY cold up there all winter and very hot in the summer. They told her she had long COVID with permanent lung damage. You, of course, will have NONE of that!!

Ana, I'm so glad to see you back up and at it. I'm sure being in good health makes a huge difference

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 01/26/22 04:32 PM

Hi all.

More fog, pea-soup fog.

It muffles all sound and it's very quiet here now, which gives me a chance to really listen to the "improved" heat pump, which they worked on yesterday. It's definitely better. I can still hear it -- it is a pump, after all -- but it's far less industrial-sounding and I think we can live with it. They will be back tomorrow to reduce the vibration from the fan, which is in the furnace room rght below the master bedroom, and that will really hlep. It will never be possible to sleep in the mater bedroom with the pump turned on, but the old furnace was also very loud, so there's no real difference there.

All of this means we can keep the pump and have our air-conditioning for next summer's heat waves.
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 01/26/22 05:26 PM

FINALLY! Why did they drag their feet so long?
Posted By: hagatha

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 01/26/22 06:11 PM

They had to wait for a compressor, but then the new compressor made no difference.

There's still one 15-20 minutes cycle that creates a very loud buzzing noise -- I think it's the defrost cycle. I can only hear it in the bedroom and master bathroom, and I think they have a plan for that, too. It's never going to be perfect, but I don't hang around in my master bedroom and bathroom all day, either, and as I said, the furnace was so loud I couldn't be in the bedroom when it was on, either. It might be an issue when I eventually sell this place, but by then presumably the pump will be old enough that replacing it with something else would be necessary anyway.

The truth is that heat pumps aren't supposed to go near bedrooms, and one of the company owners admitted that to us. That would have been part of our claim against the company had we decided to dig in our heels.

I think I can live with what we have now, though.
Posted By: oldbroad

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 01/26/22 08:18 PM

That's fairly good news for you hagatha. My furnace room is just below my bedroom also so I hear a good bit of noise but I'm very used to it and don't usually notice it anymore.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 01/27/22 04:14 PM

KSisister, a foot of snow! That's quite the dump.

We're still in a huge blanket of fog. It extends down past Victoria, half way across Vancouver Island, and well into the inland, north of Vancouver, plus Vancouver itself is also in fog.

We've never had raining iguanas, but sometimes in Ontario in breeding season a smaller highway might literally be covered in a river of frogs, and unfortunately, you either had to go back the long way, (which could be a very, very long way) or squish them.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 01/29/22 06:56 PM

Hello Friends,

Unless it's over 25 deg and/or no ice/snow on the ground, I stay home. So grateful I can do that now. I shudder to remember the days when going to work meant trudging my way from parking lot to building. The lot is at the bottom of a small hill. The slight tilt of the walkway isn't bad unless, of course, there is ice, heavy wind and/or using walker or cane to get around. Amazes me to think how I pushed myself to get to work in those conditions. Car now stays in garage. Only time I bring it out is to put out garbage/recycle bins, then back into the garage it goes. I really try to not have my car out when it snows, just too much of a pain. I just have to put salt on the walkway to my home since it gets very little if any sun and most dangerous area this time of year.

Got a call this morning from the play care place where my dog is now living. No one has come forth to adopt him to give him a regular home, but they're still looking. Manager assured me says, if nothing else happens, he'll bring him to his own house. He also informed me that, after a month there, Huey is thriving! He's gained wait; is no longer skeletal and is enjoying himself. That doesn't really jive with what the vet told me. But, doesn't really matter. I'm a little jealous, but thrilled he's happy and ok. Manager said he also recently took in another dog from a customer whose having health issues. So grateful they are there.

Take care everyone. Stay warm and healthy!

Good morning, everyone! A little bit of "opposites" today. FedEx just delivered my seed starting mix and my tomato and chili pepper seeds. And we're getting ready for a very major winter storm here this week! Depending on how far south it goes, we could get 6 inches of snow, sleet and ice or we could get 12 inches of snow!
Posted By: hagatha

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 01/30/22 05:55 PM

Draclvr, we have the opposites here now, too. We have a big, bad storm front moving in with high wind, cold temperatures, and rain, and the male hummingbirds are doing their courtship loopy-loops outside in the garden in preparation for breeding.

I think we have the heat pump at a tolerable noiose level now. The only room where there is significant noise now (and only on one short cycle), is the master bath on the ground floor, but nobody ever hangs around in there so it will do.

No snow yet, but the sky is that ominous shade of grey that precedes a snowstorm so it could start any time.

I was enjoying a nice cup of coffee this morning when Dude decided he wanted to sit on my lap, which was nice and entirely unexpected because he is not supposed to be a lap cat. In fact, apart from his suspicion of new people, he is the polar opposite of what we were told he would be like. He and Willow were playing pawsies under the full-length curtains the other night. Very cute. I tried to get a video to show John, but it was too dark.

Our snow dump started overnight and is really coming down. Hard to know how much is out there because the wind is really blowing it around. Not enough wind speed to be classified as a blizzard, but miserable enough at 13°F. Supposed to snow like this all day.

Looks like we ended up with about 12" of snow. It's hard to tell because the wind was really drifting it. Made some pork steaks in the oven with BBQ sauce and fried potatoes and onions so we could pretend like it's summer!

There was no point in trying to get the big tractor out and clear anything today because it would have just piled up again. That's for tomorrow. Trudging out to the barn to feed the barn kitties was interesting! Thought I'd follow in Bella the Bloodhound's steps! Hah! She was up to her belly in places so it was over my knees!

One of the reasons we left Toronto was the winters and the aftermath of a snowstorm -- filthy, muddy melting snow, followed by a thaw, a freeze and then another thaw. Horrible for anyone taking the bus to work, with giant puddles of icy slush to step down into. I ruined many a pair of expensive leather boots that way. City snow is really ugly once car exhaust gets to it and the whole city was just one big grey mess for weeks on end sometimes. No thanks. I'll take our West Coast rain and gloom any day.

hagatha, you remind me of the day I was trying to cross a street to catch a bus home, and when I raised my foot out of the slushy mess on my side of the street, my shoe stayed in it. I can't remember if the bus waited or left though while I dug my shoe out. Such fun times. laugh

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 02/10/22 11:37 PM

Had an interesting day trapping a couple of dogs! These guys were dumped out here Tuesday night. We are out in the country, but we know who all the dogs are and where they belong. I am a member of a couple of rescue pages on FB and have some contacts there. I contacted a woman who does trapping and rescue locally and we set out looking for them as they had moved overnight looking for food. I directed her to the last sighting and there they were. They were both VERY big dogs and VERY aggressive - mostly protecting each other. Rebel tried to catch them, but no luck so set up her remotely triggered trap and baited it with cooked chicken. We quickly caught the German Shepherd, but the huge black one was having none of it. So we picked up the trap, dog and all, and took him in to the local Humane Society who had been given a heads up. They are bursting at the seams with dogs, so had to do some creative rearranging to find room for them. They we went back out and caught the second one quickly too. Good thing they were hungry! So a hail of daggers and fire on whoever dumped these two dogs and a big cheer for Rebel the trapper. They are warm and fed and after checking them for chips, will go to a stray hold and get any medical attention needed and be put up for adoption.

The German Shepherd settled right down as soon as he was in the trap. I think he's a very nice dog. They huge black one might take a little longer as he's so young and only felt secure when the Shepherd was there to protect him. They had to separate them at the shelter because they were so aggressive when they were together - you are all right - they were pretty much terrified. I'm just glad they are now being fed and cared for. These idiots who dump their dogs out here don't understand that we simply can't take care of all your dogs. They will be hungry, cold, likely shot or a coyote pack will kill them.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 02/13/22 03:20 AM

We had a very quiet day, but today our two cats were very friendly several times, bumping noses, standing together, and even allowing a tail sniff. They seem to hit a plateau for a while, and then Willow is a total jerk, they regress a bit, and then suddenly things are better than ever.

Tonight I'm roasting a cauliflower. The recipe calls for the whole head to be simmered in wine, water, oil and butter, plus salt, red peppe flakes and bay, and then roasted for 30 minutes in a very hot oven. It's also supposed to have a goat cheese dressing, but I'm going to use red pepper hummous instead because that's what we have in the fridge. I haven't been eating nearly enough vegetables lately and I have the waistline to prove it -- nothing fits and I feel like a blimp. The mirror is a like a horror movie that won't stop! scared mad

Time to get back to my regular, Meditteranean diet, the one I've followed all my life.

John, of course, is having beans on toast and fried eggs for dinner, since cauliflower is way too healthy. and he gets to eat what he wants.
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 02/13/22 04:13 AM

I could very nearly live on roasted cauliflower or roasted brussels sprouts! I've dropped 20 pounds and want to work on another 20. This whole being over 70 with the metabolism to prove it is miserable. I try to get in at least 3 - 5 miles of walking every day, but I live in the country and my walking is down in the woods and around the barn. The snow and mud has not been conducive to walking lately! Can't wait for the weather to let up even a little bit.
Posted By: hagatha

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 02/13/22 05:52 AM

I weighed between 115 and 120 until three years ago, and all of a sudden I started to gain. My doctor surmises that it's all the stress, plus of course the change in our diet to accommodate John's declining appetite. I've been fooling myself a bit but a few days ago I tried on a shirt that was too big five years ago and it barely does up now. Time for some serious dieting.

I was always a walker, too, even when I was working. Part of my portfolio was a group of buildings in Vancouver's West End, and I made a point of walking to them from the office instead of driving unless I had a lot of paperwork to take. I often walked through my lunch hour, browsing in stores and grabbing a smoothie. I really miss that. Sure, we can walk in the woods here, but I'm a city walker. I like to have a destination. Plus, it's not safe to walk in the woods alone here. Thre are bears and cougars, but I worry more about the human animals. We do have a great seawall here that the City is improving al the time, so there is that. And I have my bike, but because of my asthma I hit a plateau early on and have never been able to get past it. I can ride for 30 minutes at a middling resistance, and that's it I still ride a few times a week , but all that does is keep me from becoming a complete couch potato.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 02/15/22 07:45 PM

The dentist was fine. This time she just wanted to review the surgeon's comments with me, which were that the bone grafts took very well and the metal screw implant is as firm as it needs to be. They'll be calling me when more work need to be done.

We've had a string of beautiful sunny, windy days. I'd love to go for a drive but John's shingles is still very painful. The chemo doctor has stopped his treatments for now as a result, though he only has two more in this six-month round anyway. I guess the later he finishes his treatments, the better the weather will be.

No doughnuts for me -- I bought half a dozen jellies yesterday and somebody who is not me ate them all. I rarely eat things like that but sometimes I set aside a few hundred calories for a treat, especially if I've been diligent about exercise. But when I went to the box, coffee in hand, there were no doughy treats left, just powdered sugar dust.

The human Dude ate them all in the middle of the night. lol

I would worry about his sugar intake, but at this point it's hardly relevant. Oh well, at least it saved me from myself. I have this wierd water retention where I can be normal one day, and look like a complete blimp the next. It's frustrating and demoralizing and makes it hard to follow a diet. It's also a new thing, and nobody has any suggestions except to tell me that my Cortisol levels are so low they barely register, but there's no treatment for it.
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 02/17/22 12:37 AM

Cortisol is a tricksey hormone. I have no idea how it works with stuff like this though. I'm surprised there is nothing that can be done to bring the level up.
Posted By: hagatha

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 02/17/22 01:19 AM

My ND here had me do a 24-hour cortisol test and I took the results to my family doctor, who is willing to work with a naturopath and took it seriously. He can't use the 24-hour test as a diagnostic tool, though, because it isn't recognized as such by the medical powers-that-be, so he ordered the standard one-point blood test for cortisol. It is just a hair's breadth above the critical line, and he can't treat me unless it's below -- literally one little tick lower. But the treatments are just stop-gaps anyway unless the cause of the issue is found. My ND recommends the usual stuff like Cortisol Manager but I haven't found it to be all that useful and it's VERY expensive. Both my GP and ND are convinced that my difficulty with sleeping and now with losing weight is part and parcel with this this. Also, of course, I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, and no matter how good the numbers look, it's not the same as having a functioning thyroid.

Anyway, I'll be eating carrots and peppers for a while, and riding my bike! When the weather gets better I'll be walking with my neighbours again, so that's something to look forward to. There are all sorts of trails in the Comox Valley that we haven't tried.

Family, is it a meat chili, or beans? Or both?
Posted By: oldbroad

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 02/17/22 05:12 AM

I usually make one big pot of chili each winter but I use ground beef and it is just too darn expensive for me right now, even when it's on "sale". I'm not sure how they even call it a sale. frown Although, currently it is on sale at a price I will pay but at a different store than where my brother usually shops. I may be able to get him to go pick some up for me but not if this winter storm hits us like it's supposed to.

A gloomy, gloomy day, threatening a major rain and wind storm. There's nothing exciting happening here, except for a quick trip out for milk so I can have my morning cappucinos. The Spousal Unit has decided that cold coffee is what he wants, so I bought a cold coffee brewing urn on Amazon a few months ago. The coffee tastes almost as good as the cold brew we buy from our local coffee shop. It's a good addition to the kitchen, and it will be much apreciated in the summer.

Our Willow is being a total jerk to her buddy Dude. It's been wonderfully peaceful around here, and they cohabit nicely, but every now and then Willow breaks out in a fit of bad behaviour. Now she lurks besde the balcony cat flap and whacks him on the head when he tries to come through. Dude is going to have to man up a little bit and give her a smack in the head.

Hubby and I finished watching Reacher on Prime. Really enjoyed it. Made me want to read the book, which I read many many years ago, but as it was a library book, I don't own it. Will have to check and see if our local library has it.

I hope you all have a most wonderful day! puppy

Happy Sunday ya'll puppy

it's a beautiful day in AL...blue skies, bright sun and in the 60's. Had a great walk in the neighborhood with Lil Soot and Hubby. Not running just yet but pushed the walk today.

Now home and doing absolutely NOTHING which is wonderful for a change. hamster

Catching up on FBI's that I missed while gone.

We have braved the world of no cable so figuring out which streaming services I want/need.

I read all the Reacher books many years ago, but didn't remember anything from the series. I stopped reading the series once Child stopped writing it.

We've got sun and wind, so it's very cold.

Our fvourite coffee shop just opened a second location five minutes from our house, so we're off for a cappuccino. I now have three different brands of coffee in rotaion, which I mostly order online -- Discovery Coffee, from Victoria (which I buy at our coffee shop), Artigiano Coffee from Vancouver, and Milano Coffee, which is international but still has a wonderful small-roastery feel to it. Milano has some very high-quality "Master" roasts in its rotation and they are stunningly good. It's coffeee heaven around here. It's my only vice, so I indulge.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 02/26/22 06:27 PM

Hello GB friends,

Have I got a story for you crazy A week ago yesterday (Fri 2/18), I woke up slightly woozy. Figured it was the weather which can't seem to decide if it's winter or spring. Continued to feel 'off' for a few days. Then I couldn't lay flat in bed without the world spinning, so slept sitting up. Saw both chiropractor and acupuncturist, which just seemed to help me calm down generally. Tuesday midafternoon, sitting down and shocked when full blown dizziness started. Tried to keep my cool but it wouldn't stop. After carefully walking to use bathroom, called 911. Dizziness meds in ER didn't help. They had to put the head of the bed in a complete upright position to ease the sensation. Stayed overnight cause couldn't walk from ER bed to bathroom without needing help, to feel unsteady. CT done of neck and MRI of head both negative, plus no outward sign of stroke. Neurologist diagnosed vertigo from left ear. PT came in to teach a bed exercise to calm the sensation. She explained a lot, then asked if I'd had the vaccine. When I said yes, she told me she'd had several similar cases within the last year. People with very mild symptoms, and nothing else wrong with them. She believes it's a long range effect from the vaccine, even a year later. Doc said most likely a one time thing. Still suggested I take a bottle of the meds used in ER, in case I'm not at home and it hits again; at least I'll have something with me. After 2 nights in hospital, I got home THurs afternoon. slapforehead

I've had my share of hospital stays in my life, and am constantly surprised how, like everywhere else, things change. Having to call the cafeteria for meal orders never happened back in the day. Mostly, you got what they were serving and that was it. What really made me laugh was when the nurse came to take my temp, she had to get a new thermometor cause the one she'd picked up wasn't working cause the battery was dead. Back in the day, using the manual ones, that wouldn't have been a problem. A sign of things being different due to pandemic; since I needed an autopap for my sleep apnea they had to find and plug in a huge air filter which was pretty noisy; and when it was on, the medical personnel had to where extra 'sanitation' clothes, but not a hazmat suit.

Biggest laugh I had, mostly to myself, was having to tell one of the ER interns that there was a urine sample on the bathroom sink. It wasn't mine. God knows how long it'd been there. He was astonished and many apologies.

Anyway, hope my life goes back to being dull and boring lol

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 02/26/22 07:02 PM

butterflybabe, I would be very hesitant to take as medical gospel the beliefs of a single physical therapist based on a few patients she's cared for. If this happens again, I'd be asking for a full blood workup to rule out anything serious.

I get severe vertigo myself, and it's because my blood pessure drops suddenly. There are times when the room is actually spinning out of control and I have to hang on the sides f the chair.

Here's to a return to boring and normal! That's the way I like my life, too.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 02/26/22 07:27 PM

Sorry that you had a rough week, butterfly. I'm glad to hear you are doing better now.

hagatha, what butterflybabe was told was not the opinion of one therapist. It is a known reported and published side effect. Search "Acute Vertigo After COVID-19 Vaccination"

Have a happy day all! My two boarders just went home and it's a quiet house for the first time in 10 days.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 02/26/22 08:07 PM

It is a possibility and I've read about it too. The best study into acute vertigo and the COVID vaccine done in January 2022 concluded they could not establish a direct correlation between the vaccine and the vertigo. They concluded that more study was needed. It also could have been unrelated. My husband spent an entire day in the ER before being diagnosed with extreme vertigo in one ear - and this was 3 years ago. So, it's hard to know if that was the cause or not. In the hundreds of friends and family members I know who are fully vaccinated and boosted, no one has had any adverse reactions. My husband had a headache for 36 hours and I had nothing, not even a sore arm. I've had worse reactions to the tetanus vaccine!

Glad you're home and feeling better, butterflybabe! I spent a couple of days in the hospital with a PE (pulmonary embolism) a year and a half ago. It was nice to be able to order anything from the menu when I wanted it! Here's to boring!

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 02/28/22 05:52 PM

hagatha, While I appreciate your concern and caution, I'm always on top of my health, and spend more time at doc offices than most anywhere else. Other than needing to lose some weight, I'm in relatively good health for a woman in her late 60s. This physical therapist works for the hospital system that I've been part of since I moved into the area 10 years ago. My basic feeling is that, since I'm not a medical professional, I have to rely on those who are. I was so stunned and upset by it that I asked if it could be related to getting older, in other words, might it happen again. I was told it was highly unlikely, and was assured it was more probable to be a one time thing. Of course, they can't guarantee anything, but, for my own sanity, I have to rely on their expert opinion.

Even though nothing can be proven right now, I think that, as time goes by, because of the enormity of the covid situation, the vaccine, rightly or wrongly, may be blamed for a lot of things. I'm not sorry I got it, better safe than not, but still very frustrating.

We had a couple of great days.

I've take over managing John's medication and now that he's getting them at the proper times and not forgetting doses or even whole days his pain levels have dropped. Yesterday we spent the whole day in Courtenay shopping and even had an early dinner at our favourite restaurant there. I'd been certain that we'd never be there again, but there we were, eating dinner.

Today was also great. We had our montly drive to the dump, which is actully a very nice country drive, and then to the kitchen store to look at some tablecloths and cookware. We ive in a dodgy little city but it has a kitchen store that is second to none, anywhere. Then we went to the brew pub for dinner.

That's the most he's been able to manage since he broke his hip last year.

I'm hoping we can get a couple of good days a week in the summer for boating.

He still has the Shingles infection, unfortunately, and it hurts quite a bit. Clearly we didn't get the medication in time. The Bell's Palsy isn't quite as bad and his eye is fine. However, the problem with the Shingles, apart from the pain, is that the doctors don't want him to receive chemo until it's gone, so he's been off chemo for about 6 weeks now. He only had three more sessions to go, but I guess the three-month break will be later in the summer, which isn't too bad.

He's still defying doctor's predictions.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 03/08/22 02:09 AM

I'm in the same boat. I avoided sweets for 45 years but went completely off the rails this past two years. I realized how bad it had gotten when I ordered a new pair of jeans from Mavi in the size I've worn for the last decade or so, and they were way too small.

I fill myself up with herbal teas instead, and have an apple when I really need something sweet. But it's dificult because John wants things like chocolate mousse cake and I have a hard time resisting.

Heading into several days of wind and rain here. Nasty weather.

I'm so excited! I've found a young couple just starting out in their own painting business to do a bunch of painting inside my house! They've both been painting professionally for about 8 years and now that they have a baby, they want to stay local and not drive 3 hours every day to and from the jobs. The husband wanted to check out what all there was to do, so they stopped by this morning. They even brought the cute little 4 month old baby and have just left! I have just decided that I am no longer going to get up on 8 foot ladders to paint!

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 03/14/22 04:44 PM

I used to do all of our interior painting, too, but when we painted this place 5 years ago we hired professionals. I could have done a better job (I'm very precise with my cutting in), but it was awfully nice to have someone lse do all the work.

When I remodeled/restore this 100+ year old farmhouse, I hung the drywall, taped it, sanded the joints and painted. But that was 25 years ago and at over 70, those days are over! I have wood ceilings and crown molding, so no cutting in! I was pretty good at it too back in the day! This stairwell is about 15" floor to ceiling and I'm NOT getting on a 12" 2 X 12 between two ladders to work in it again!!

Yes, full-height stairwells are off limits to me, too.

We put a modern chandelier in our 17' stairwell a few years without giving thought to how we would clean it, and we actually have to hire someone in to do it. They put a board across the railings and stand on that. There's not a chance I'm doing that!

Nice. Fresh paint really perks a place up.

I have plans for this place. The original owners had execrable taste, and they paired a garish red oak laminated floor with very lovely old-growth fir cabinets, and my kitchen look like a pumpkin. It's all orange. I'm thinking about new flooring through the house -- new tiles in a nice quiet slate, and new hardwood. It's a huge job. Our decorater lives three doors down so I might ask her to pop by and get some colour ideas for flooring.

When we bought the house, I knew the colours were going to be a problem. The walls were ochre yellow and the "feature" walls were a colour I can only describe as dried blood. The tiles are fake terracotta. The cabinets are lovely fir, but very delicate and easily damaged. They're good enough to refinish, though.

This is not a a project to be undertaken lightly. We would have to move for a month or two if I can find a short-term rental in town that takes cats, snd needless to say the timing depends on John's state of health.

soot, I will be doing walking tours and giving the "spiel" on the wagon rides. Normally visitors don't get to go down the lane, which is 1/2 mile long to the back part of the Rescue Ranch where we have seven 10 acre pastures. Longmeadow is 165 acres nestled back in the woods at the end of a one-mile driveway which makes us one of the top three rescues of this kind in the country. That includes the number and variety of animals and the intensive care they receive. It's a pretty interesting place!

We don't save all the horses we get, but we save most of them. There is a very real thing called compassion fatigue and the employees occasionally get training on how to deal with it. We see some terrible things, but it's also so rewarding when you see them start to gain weight and grow back hair and look happy in their eyes again. I've cried when a couple of them got adopted because you can get attached!

I replaced flooring here a few years ago. It was pretty easy. The uproar with moving out all the furniture wasn't too bad. Some of the bigger pieces, they just moved while they installed and then just slid it back. I think they were in and out in 3 days.
Posted By: hagatha

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 03/27/22 10:51 PM

3 days wouldn't be awful.

Our house is about 2,400 square feet. I'd be re-tiling as well, so that would take longer and be a lot noisier. But I'm so done with the orange kitchen. It's depressing. Plus I absolutely despise having a wood floor in the kitchen. I know it's the fashion, but it's dumb.

I'm starting to clear out our kitchen and garage. John is a packrat and we have masses of stuff in the garage that we haven't even looked at for years. Our kitchen is full of mismatched mugs and small appliances that we never use. I'll make up a couple of boxes and take them to the Hospice Society thrift shop here in town. Eye doctor appointment and then it's back to hanging pictures and organizing.

I'm also continuing my project of ripping all of our old music CDs to my computer and then transferring over to my home server. From there we can play our music anywhere from an app on our phones. We have been playing it on a really good speaker that we can take outside by the pool. Looking forward to it being warm enough to do that again! I also have the Plex Server set up on our Smart TV so we can play our music on the home server on the TV too. So, when I have all our music in three places - my computer, my cloud backup and my home server, can I make myself just get rid of all the physical CD's!!! We really have nothing here to play them on anymore. Hubby will have a REALLY hard time with it as he is a bit of a hoarder.

Have a great April Fools' Day everyone: I need that dark Sumatran Roast for the coffee please, possibly blended with some quite strong Italian. smile

We have bright spring sunshine, and lots of daffodils and other spring bulbs coming up, but cold enough to have given us a brief hailstorm yesterday!

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 04/01/22 08:13 PM

The garden centres are open here, too, so I picked up some hellebores for our front beds. The deer leave them alone, thankfully. I have one spectacular hellebore that blooms from February through to the end of July. It's a ruffled purple and white one, fully upright with no drooping, and I've never found another one anywhere. I was hoping to do the entire bed all in the same variety, but alas, it is not to be. However, I got one that is close, with a ruffled greenish-white and purple flower.

It's finally warm enough to go boating. We had a short trip out to Mittlenatch and back. The S.U. needs a fair amount of assistance getting in and out of the boat now, but we can still manage it, which bodes well for the upcoming summer.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 04/02/22 07:23 AM

We have several pink flowering cherry trees with slightly staggered blossoming times just starting - beautiful, but all too brief: later it will be wisteria giving us a lovely display, including hopefully some which I only planted last year to climb through a couple of the flowering cherries. We also have a rose bed which seems to thrive for most of the year despite inadequate maintenance on my part.

I am a somewhat lazy/haphazard gardener and I am trying to create a wildflower meadow on part of the garden, to some extent on the basis that it mainly takes care of itself: I employ someone else to mow the rest of the grass (quite a cost effective option as it avoids the need for me to buy expensive lawn care equipment).

Have a good weekend everyone! smile

I somehow hurt my back yesterday and all of a sudden I'm barely able to hobble around. Not sure what I did, because I came home from shopping, had a cup of tea, and then when I stood up I had this severe pain at the base of my spine.

Honestly, the sight of two of us creaking around today would be funny if the pain hadn't kept me up all night. So strange.

I don't have to go anywhere for a couple of days so hopefully I'll be back to normal soon.

We're in the midst of a nasty storm right now. It's a good day for watching TV.

This one is receding, thankfully. It was pretty bad. I actually had trouble standing up.

The last mystery pain I had, in my left hip, came on very suddenly and lasted for three years! Then one day the pain wasn't so bad, and now it's been gone for four years.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 04/05/22 08:48 AM

I do pilates exercises for my troublesome back, which also responds well to cycling, but my absolute must is a good backrest, and I swear by this (sold as a backstretcher) for use on just about every seat including in the car https://www.amazon.com/North-American-Healthcare-JB4866-Stretcher/dp/B001G6ZRF0 - there are now loads of more complicated and adjustable (and more expensive) varieties some of which I have tried over the years, but I keep coming back to this one. I have also found that a TENS machine turned up high can help unlock the tight muscles (which are often the cause of the pain) in a matter of hours rather than days or even weeks of rest/exercise/physiotherapy.
Of course the other problem is that reduced mobility (not to mention comfort food) caused by an aching back can cause weight gain which then adds to the stress on the back... catrub

Tourist season hasn't started yet and everything is so very quiet around here, no tour boats and only the occasional plane, mostly ancient Beaver float planes. The only thing I can hear at the moment is the cat fountain and the fan on my computer -- and the cat flap onto the balcony, which can be very flappy indeed now that the weather has improved.

Our neighbourhood has also benefitted from the recent closure of a nearby electric power plant, which could be very noisy in the summer, at times. It's no longer needed beause we have a brand-new hydro plant, built underground for earthquake stability. They took out the old penstocks a couple of years ago and have replanted the area where they stood. BC Hydro ponied up for some new wheel-chair accessible trails in the area and a suspension bridge over the falls, so it was a real win for our community.

Dude has finally understood that he is part of the family and for the first time we were treated to his company on the couch with us while watched TV yesterday. He's also finally sleeping on a bed during the day. He's never dared do those things before, I guess thinking that Willow wouldn't like it. But now that they are really pals he's relaxed quite a bit.

THis will be a lazy day for us, apart from a trip to the Post Office to pick up a mysterious package that John is being very coy about. cool

I have exactly one errand today, which is picking up my standard order of jelly doughnuts from our local Thirfty's. The S.U. has decided that jelly doughnuts are an essential part of a healthy diet, and so I get him half a dozen of them three times a week, which the bakery staff find very amusing for some reason. I guess they think I'm the one eating them.

We live in the middle of the woods, so deer are everywhere. But we have dogs, so the deer don't usually come up around the house. They do occasionally get into the vegetable gardens, but we use a water spray called the "Scarecrow" that hooks up to your hose. It uses a 9-volt battery and a motion detector to shoot a burst of water and scares away anything in it's path.

We have a feeder on our back balcony. Dude caught one, probably his first ever bird. He came rushing in through the flap, calling out the good news that he had captured dinner. We confiscated it, much to his disappointment.

Two hours later, he came in with another one.

Willow always catches one each year, but she's fat and lazy and not overly motivated these days. Dude is like a little racehorse, and this is all new to him, so he's totally focused. We have another feeder on our front deck, too, but there are no perching trees nearby so there's less chance of him catching one there.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #5 - 04/16/22 03:55 PM

My task for the next few days will be cleaning our upper decks, which both have a couple of years of green yuck on them. The larger deck is a big job, plus it's vinyl and hard to clean. We can't power wash them because that would spray green stuff and schmutz all over our neighbour's front garden and siding, so it's a hands and knees scrub. Yesterday I tried warm wter and a biodegradable soap, and it came out very clean, but I was only able to do about 1/10 of the deck in an hour. So It'll be an hour a day until it's done -- IF my back co-operates, which is doubtlful.

I need to do a lot more work around here this spring because things have been sliding since John became too frail a couple of years ago. Better get myself in shape!
