I spent most of this afternoon playing with a Golden Retriever puppy. It made my weekend.

SpaceQ, goldens are the best! I love my Nugget so much, she is the sweetest dog I've ever had the pleasure of sharing my life with! Hope all is well by you!

I just got home from a 4 day trip to a tiny town of Bellevue, Iowa. It was hands down one of the best vacations ever!

A Disney cruise ship just sailed by. A tug was in the way and the ship's horn sounded - it's the opening notes to "When you wish upon a star."

hagatha, that made me laugh! I assume it got the attention of the tug boat!

Dogs are indeed our link to paradise. I never thought I'd have a Bloodhound adopt me, but Bella has been an absolute joy!

Yes, the tug moved to the side. This is a very narrow channel and all the vessel traffic going north comes right past our windows. Only the largest ocean-going vessels sail on the outside, the west side, of the Island. We get lots of ship's horn sounding here.

I was sitting outside looking out at the fog over the water this morning, and all of a sudden was treated to a full-on conversation between the cats, who joined me for a few minutes. Honestly, those two are so verbal together it's hilarious. I've never seen anything like it before. Chirps and peeps and churring and quiet meows. They both talk to me a lot, too.

They are. I'm so glad I have them. Some days they're the only reason I have to get up.

hagatha, one of our members over at Mystery Manor lives in Washington State. She went on a whale watching tour and they were treated to a humpback whale who interacted with them for about 30 minutes! The captain of the boat had been doing this for 15 years and had only seen it 3 times and never for more than a few minutes, so it was a thrill for him too! She said she got a direct blast of whale snot more than once! Said the stuff is seriously stinky!! LOL!! The video she posted is amazing.

Today was day 5 for my sweet pickles which means that I put in jars and processed in a boiling water bath. Got 18 pints!

A desperately needed rainy day. I'll try some of that Nicaraguan coffee, Soot! Just sitting her enjoying my cup of strong black German coffee and listening to the hummingbirds. I finally gave up and put up seven 1 quart feeders. The three hanging baskets I had are toast anyway after the extended 100° temps we had. It's about time for the hummers to enter their final push to load up on food before they start their migration in a few weeks. A professional photographer friend found a hummer nest on her property and is taking daily photos of the progress of the little ones being fed by the mama hummer. It's so fascinating!

Today is canning all my culled tomatoes. I wash and cut up the gnarly ones along with any that have bad spots and cook them down. Then I put through my snazzy electric Italian tomato press and pressure can it in quarts. I should get about 8 quarts of sauce today. I already have 16 quarts, but that's not enough as I use a lot of it in the winter.

I miss my hummingbirds. Dude was so adept at catching them on the balconies that I had to take those feeders down. I've only got a couple of safe places for them now, on places I can't see, so I'll put up the heated ones away from grabby little paws in a week or so, for the over-wintering Anna's.

Happy Hump Day everyone 🐫

I took my Willow to the vet yesterday to get her a full health checkup and guidance on weight control, and also because she's pretty obviously depressed a lot of the time, lethargic, and very clingy. The vet put her on kitty Prozac. We'll have to see how that goes, but it would be nice to see the old Willow again, the sleek one who loves walking on her leash and playing.

I'm sure Willow is missing John and picking up on your grief too. Animals are so attuned to their humans. I had two dogs who clung to me constantly after my 2nd hubby died.

How old is Willow?

Willow is 9.

She's been pretty sad for a couple of years, clearly picking up on John's pain and sadness. She spent most of her time since she was a kitten sitting with John, in his lap or draped over his arm if he was working at this desk, and she used to do do what we called a "huggle," where she'd sit in his lap and wrap her front paws around his upper arm and pull herself really close to his armpit, with her full strength. She always slept beside him, too. There's no doubt in my mind that she misses him terribly.

She's still a young'un. Yes, I'm sure she does miss him!

It's a beautiful, windy morning, but apparently we have another heat wave coming our way. I still have some paperwork to get done so I'm staying in with my air conditioning.

Got those 5-day sweet pickles canned. Oh, my gosh! They are worth every minute of work - SO crispy/crunchy and good. Got 8 pints of stewed tomatoes with onions, green peppers and onions done yesterday. I'd like to get more of those, but don't know if the tomatoes will cooperate. We are one of the few people in our area who have ANY veggie garden at all because of the horrendous heat earlier this summer. But hubby has been watering religiously once a week.

Sure is a beautiful morning! Twittering hummingbirds and black coffee - great start to the day. It's weeding for me later - they are starting to get ahead of me! Then tonight is the first night of league bowling. Don't know if I'm ready for it or not!

Good afternoon all: too wet to be out in the garden today, but there is some finishing plaster work long overdue in the conservatory - definitely not my favourite task but I have just made a start!

I particularly enjoy the ongoing updates from Drac (aka the Human Dynamo), and hagatha's cat tales, although sorry to hear that Duke has made hummingbird feeding problematic and that Willow has the blues. I usually check this thread every morning over my first coffee, although I am usually too lazy to post anything...

Soot, Willow is a snuggler and has taken over my lap now.

I picked up the medication today, but, true to my expectations, I cannot get the little monster to actually eat it. It's a tuna-flavoured liquid, but if I put it in her food she just walks away and trying to syringe it into her mouth results in a flurry of claws and struggling, so I'm at a bit of an impasse. There is a second medication for back pain, which she also has, apparently. Neither medication has gone down the hatch yet.

She's not always depressed, though. Just now, after a long, drooling, session with a new catnip toy, Dude deigned to actually chase her and engage in some play, which always cheers her up. They may never be bonded, but there are times when they clearly enjoy having each other around.

Hagatha, I am delighted to hear that Willow seems to be accepting you as a substitute to a greater extent!

Last time we had to medicate a cat there were some dry treats we used, wetting them but letting them dry out to some extent: success when putting it in wet food failed.

Now all you have to do is find a way of protecting hummingbird feeders from Dude... (a bell on a collar perhaps?)

I managed to get some Gabapentin down Willow's gob last night. I think I'll have to use only one or the other drug, since she runs away every time she sees me with the syringe. Once a day is all I can manage, and I suspect that the Gabapentin will also help with the depression.

The worst part is that Willow is also on a diet, and the constant whining for food is getting annoying. Plus, she's howling at my door at 5:00 am and I'm getting sleep-deprived. John used to feed her in the middle of the night, and she's absolutely starving early in the morning. Stubborn girl; banging on the door and hissing at her works or a day or two, and then she's right back at it. I've ordered one of those automatic food dispensers so she can eat early. If it works I'll get one for Dude, too. I can't feed him dry food since he never drinks water, but he could have a little snack early on.

Okay, I'm sorry hagatha but I have to ask this. How do you/the vet know she has back pain? You wrote this earlier: "There is a second medication for back pain, which she also has, apparently." That word "apparently" is saying to me that you are taking the vets word about it. As you all know, I know nothing about health issues (cats or my own), so I'll refrain from any personal comment but I'm just curious about this. Is she doing something that shows she's in pain or maybe when you touch her or what?

The vet ran her hands down around Willow's spine, and she did flinch a bit. She no longer jumps up onto surfaces she used to sit on all the time - like the higher window sills and, notably, the perch on our balcony that allows her to see the world. I didn't really notice this before, but now that I have more time I can see that she moves like a far older cat than Dude, who is a year older than her. I also remember my previous cat, Rachel, who at the age of 9 was as goofy and playful as any kitten.

I'm hoping that getting a couple of pounds off her will make medication unnecessary. She's pretty big.

I do think being overweight is a lot of it. I just wish that Willow being on a diet didn't mean I have to lose sleep. I love my cat, but...

If she cannot get into the bedroom, could some of that be loneliness, not just hunger?

We always have food out for the cat. I even leave food out for her even though she won't give me the time of day. Of course, I'm not sure how that works for the dieting.

My friend uses two of those automatic feeders and they are a lifesaver for her cats who tend towards fatties. Leaving food out all the time was what turned one of them into a 23 pound porker when her ex-husband had him. She was surprised he hadn't already gone into liver failure. It took her almost a year, but she finally got the weight off before it killed him.

Oldbroad, I don't think she's lonely, since I've always had a separate room because of my severe insomnia. She's never been allowed in my room at night; she wiggles and snores and is not the best bed companion. The 5:00 am wakeup call is definitely food related.

I've started an Artigiano Coffee subscription, where every two weeks coffee arrives in my mailbox all the way from Vancouver. I was finding that my old favourite Discovery Coffee was all too lightly roasted to give my coffee enough body, now that I'm using the automatic espresso machine, even the blend they use for their espresso. The Artigiano is just right - small beans, a true medium roast, and no trace of oiliness. Plus this way I save 10%. Now I really feel as though the coffee I'm making is very close to coffee shop coffee.

It's a beautiful sunny day, and if it's not too hot later I ight walk on the seawall for an hour or two. Our little city has spent years upgrading the waterfront and now we have a long, lovely walk from downtown south along the water's edge for miles. The City was smart enough to add lots of parking stalls all along that stretch of the road, as well as well-placed washrooms, so you really can walk for hours. There's a nice coffee shop and a couple of restaurants along the way, too.

That walk sounds heavenly, hagatha! Beautiful day here too... but I'm spending it pulling weeds!

What kind of machine are you talking about? Cost and calling?

A battery backup is not meant to allow you to continue to use your computer if the power goes out. It is meant to allow you enough time to save your work or save your game and then shut the computer down. Most of the batteries are only good for about 30 minutes and if you use it all up, you have to buy a new battery - and they are expensive.

Finally on the downside of pulling weeds. I need to dig up and transfer some daylilies and plant some shasta daisies in their place. Going to fertilize the flower beds one more time before fall. Then I will let everything quietly go to sleep over the winter!

Well, I just had an interesting experience here. I have lived in this house for 20 years, and I knew of people who had spotted bears in the vicinity, but in general at even higher elevations (we are at nearly three thousand feet). I was standing here looking out my window which is right next to my computer desk, and what I saw was a very large brown bear going across our property. Wow. Kind of scary, and I realized that I have never seen a bear in the wild before but only in a zoo. What seemed like a bear has gotten into our trash a few times in the past, when we left it out overnight for the pickup in the morning, but we never actually saw it. My son saw one once higher up the road when he was out jogging.

It's also worth noting that this happened at 6 p.m. when the sun is still out. The bears must be *really* hungry and thirsty to be coming down here and when the sun is still out, no less.

Have a good evening, everyone. I am going to try not to let this rattle me too much. The deer leaping out of our driveway when I was coming home from the grocery store yesterday doesn't hold a candle to this. Yikes. I don't need this kind of excitement.

I don't blame you Marian! Looking around for bears when you go out does not sound like my kind of excitement either. I hope there's no way for entry into your home. I've read some stories like that happening lately too.

Ob, happily there is no way one can get into our home. Seeing it like that was both frightening and awe-inspiring at one and the same time. I just hope I don't see another one on our property for another 20 years or so. I know they have been on it before - I just never expected to see one when the sun was out!

We are starting to see black bears here quite often. But a measly 300 pound black bear does not hold a candle to a huge brown bear! Yikes!

Try not to let the bear get to your garbage. Here in BC many municipalities ban leaving garbage out overnight because bears get habituated and end up getting shot. They aren't dangerous unless they feel threatened. John and I encountered black bears on many occasions while hiking around here and north of Vancouver. Usually you see the hind end disappearing into the bushes. Bears are not nocturnal animals and most sightings are during the day.

Of course, a grizzly is another story altogether. Those ones...let's just say you don't want to run into one of them. There were no grizzlies on Vancouver Island until a couple of decades ago. They swam over from the Mainland, and have started to populate the northern part of the Island.. I guess human encroachment is pushing them outwards.

We have a massive black bear in our neighbourhood. He's been here for years, and everyone calls him Sidney. He lives around here because we have large areas of scrub filled with berry bushes, and we only ever see him when the berries are ripe. By silent agreement, nobody ever feeds him and he leaves us all alone as long as we cede the berries to him when he's around. And the occasional apple tree gets raided.

We also have a cougar around here, which is far more worrying. Fortunately, there's a large population of wild rabbits around here, but it has taken a cat in the past.

Hagatha, the garbage has to be out on the road by 7 a.m. For the past year I have been waiting until the morning of the pickup to put out the garbage (keeping it locked up in the basement during the week), but this gets problematic in late fall and winter when it is very dark in the morning until shortly before that time because obviously I also don't want to be putting out the trash when it is still dark, even with a flashlight. The road where we put out the trash is quite a ways away from our house. Anyway, all this is by way of saying that we haven't been letting the bear get to our garbage for about a year now - but due to what I described above, it's somewhat problematic in the late fall and winter.

That is news to me about bears coming out during the day. I guess that is mainly because bear sightings around here are mostly people showing them on videos captured at night when they were wandering around neighbors' properties.

Interesting what is going on with grizzly bears up there.

And your cougar reminds me of our mountain lions and bobcats, although sightings of them are somewhat infrequent. All of this, though, is why our cat is an indoor cat only - it is just too dangerous out there otherwise for small creatures.

And to think mere spiders are on of my scaries ....

Around here we only have possums and rats, both of which are sometimes quite big. About 5 years ago I saw a huge racoon 2 streets over that scared me a bit as I thought it was a person at first and I'd never seen a racoon around. Never seen one since.

I remember learning this in one of my wildlife biology courses. Bears are nocturnal or diurnal (daytime) depending on species and sex. Some are crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk. Black bears are generally considered nocturnal. This is what I found about brown bears...

Interesting. We've often seen black bears around BC, always in the day. Of course, at night we're not out and about looking for bears, so that would explain it.

The only time we've seen a grizzly in the last few years was when we boated up to the Bren River river mouth in the Fall a couple of years ago. We saw a mother with her cubs foraging eel grass on the beach. She herded them into the bush when a male arrived and then they popped out again after he left. John also photographed them in various different places in BC, notably in the Bella Coola Valley. I suspect it has a lot to do with the time of year and the feeding grounds.

Good morning, Danish, Donuts, and Bagels in the Break Room. Here bears have been seen in people's pools, and one was napping in a backyard Hammock. The bears are much smaller here, and they do have bear proof trashcans we can get. Bears are quite good at climbing fences. The problem here is all their habit has been built on, and they are hungry. It breaks my heart.

Sounds so cute and sweet - lounging in pools and napping on hammocks. Sounds being the key word there.

Speaking of bears, the City here has been upgrading our central downtown public spaces, and as part of that they've made banners from photographs taken by local photographers. They used one of John's Grizzly pictures for one of them. He never got to see it, but he did know it was going to happen.

We're headed for another heat wave, with the warning already in effect by 6:30. It's a lovely morning though. Coffee on the deck looking out over the water has become an early morning ritual, with the two felines accompanying me through the door. Most of the time it's peaceful, but every now and again, like this morning, Willow decides that she absolutely has to be a jerk and pesters Dude to the point that he hisses at her. Then she's all innocence and sweetness for the next couple of hours.

There must be something dead on the beach below us because eagles and ravens are circling around.

Great start to the day, hagatha! We've had a beautiful week here - mid to upper 80's F. I finally got ALL my weeding done. We carted away 4 huge wheelbarrows of weeds to the brush pile. Now I just have to divide and replant some daylilies.

Hello everyone and good morning! Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Coffee, Scottish Breakfast tea and bottled Fiji water in the Break Room. We're off to walk the dogs.

Hot and muggy here today. Making a small batch of pizza sauce and then making some jalapeno poppers for hubby to take in to his hang-out at Elmer's Tavern on Tuesday.

We went from hot to cold in two days -- typical coastal weather. I plan to spend some time cleaning up our large balcony to get everything ready for Fall.

Nothing exciting happening here. A good friend of ours is coming up for a few days next week. Last time he was here for a few days, just before John died, he made very good friends with my neighbours, so he'll probably stay with them and we'll all hang out in the evenings, maybe go out for dinner.

Happy Sunday everyone. I'm excited for another episode of House of the Dragon.

All of a sudden it's starting to get dark at 7:30 here. Soon the cruise ships will be gone for the winter. The Rufous Hummingbirds left a couple of weeks ago, and we're starting to see other birds migrating south. We didn't have a great bird summer in our garden here -- because of Avian flu we weren't feeding them. I missed the goldfinches. Normally they're here in abundance all summer. Today I'm putting away the few potted plants I put out this year.

I'm trying to decide what to do with all John's camera gear. I thought I'd check out a photo club meeting in September to see if I can rekindle my enthusiasm but right now I'm not feeling it. It may be too early to tell. Plus it's a long drive home in the dark.

Making a huge bunch of jalapeno poppers this morning for hubby to take in to Elmer's Tavern this afternoon. I halved and removed the seeds yesterday. Today I will fill with a cream cheese bacon mixture, coat with flour and then coat with bread crumbs and then deep fry. Will go well with a cold beer or two!

Those sound yummy but far too ambitious for me.

I still haven't really felt like cooking yet. My dinners tend to be of the grilled cheese and salad variety, and that's if I can conjure up the energy to make a salad. I have four large containers of vanilla and chocolate protein powder left and so I often make myself a big protein smoothie with berries, coconut water and strawberry kefir. They're high in protein and taste like dessert, so it's a win/win. That's about where I'm at with cooking.

It's going to be a scorcher today, already in the mid 80's. My friend is bicycling here from Vancouver today and he's going to be stopping a lot along the way for water, I suspect.

When I was living alone, a bowl of cold breakfast cereal or crackers and cheese were often my dinner. Sometimes popcorn if I felt ambitious! I totally get it.

My neighbour and I emptied out the boat today. That was very difficult for me, taking away all of the coats and lures and rods and the salt water fly reel I bought John twenty-five years ago. So many memories in that boat. We spent about 1,200 hours in it over five years -- that's how many hours are on the two motors.

I'm still not sure I'm selling it, but the marina will clean it all up and see if anyone asks about it while it's on the lot. It's a beautiful boat, designed specifically for the water around here. It was a huge part of our life together.

What a hard thing to do, hagatha. Take your time making any decisions about such an important part of your lives together. You may find it has a lot of life in it for you yet!

Draclvr, the water around here is quite dangerous, so much so that there are no boat rentals here in spite of the area being a salmon fishing mecca. While I'm comfortable handling the boat and I know the water well, I'm not competent to manage in an emergency, or if the weather changes abruptly. And the boat is very expensive to moor and maintain, never mind the cost of fuel. It's $100 just to go out for a few hours.. I'm coming around to the idea that my using the boat is just a pipe dream, a lovely thought but not practical. Oddly, there is nobody here that would be willing to give a few lessons. I've enquired at every marina in town. Anyway, we'll see what transpires over the next little while.

That does sound daunting.

I was wondering about the boat hagatha, as you had mentioned something about taking lessons. Drac's advice about taking your time makes sense to me. I paid the mortgage and condo fees on my sister's condo for over 2 years after she passed because I really didn't want to sell it but finally came to the conclusion that it was not feasible for me to try to keep it. I still do wish I could have figured out a way though.

No exiting plans for the weekend. I've finally got most of the financial stuff sorted and now have a regular monthly payment set up.

My friend went back to Vancouver this morning. I enjoy the company -- he's like family -- but I find it difficult to have someone around all the time. Fortunately he and my neighbours have become good friends, so he spent a lot of time with them, too.

Now I have peace and quiet, and a suddenly bold Dude, who for the very first time walked straight up to Willow and gave her a good cuff for no apparent reason other than a fair comeuppance for all the times she's been a jerk. I guess having her nails clipped did the trick. She was so astonished she hissed at him with her ears back, and she never does that. After that she seemed to admit that it were a fair cop, and settled back down quite happily. I think it's a good step, since he's been playing underdog since I got him.

Sitting here with my black coffee, doing my daily Wordle and listening to the hundreds of hummingbirds. They should be leaving for the migration soon. I will not miss putting out 7 quarts of sugar water every day, but I will miss their chittering. Someone in the next town over has an albino hummingbird! It's made such a stir, they were on the news. Early this morning I sat out on the deck with the cats watching a humpback slowly make its way up the channel. I'm trying to get morning sun on my face, as that's supposed to help with sleep issues.

We won't be feeding a lot of hummingbirds this year. Two of my neighbours will be in Mexico for three months, and there's no way I can monitor ten feeders -- I'd be at it all day. I might put out two of the heated feeders in the locations where the cats can't get at them, and there's one spot next door I can see from my balcony, so I could look after that one too, but it will be nothing like the ten feeders we've had out for all these years. Hopefully it won't be a terribly cold winter.

Bottled up my first hot pepper fermentation yesterday. Got 9 little 6 ounce bottles of hot sauce and even figured out how to use the little shrink wraps for the tops! Today I'm going to put a 2-hour cold smoke on a batch before I ferment it with garlic. Got tons of peppers, so gotta find SOMETHING to do with all of them!

I thought I'd woken up in the middle of the night, only to realize that we're in the grips of a massive storm front and it's still almost dark and very windy. Soon it will be time for the fireplace.

Every year there's a classic car parade through the streets and this year it was yesterday. It's usually 200 cars, and you can hear them coming for well over an hour before they actually arrive. Our street is on its route, so the neighbourhood gets out chairs and snacks and watches the cars go by. It takes about an hour. People from all over North America participate, and there were a lot of truly beautiful old vehicles. Lots of Mustangs, or course, and Corvettes, but some classic Novas and Firebirds; pretty much any muscle car or sports car you can imagine, plus some ancient trucks and very old Fords. Quite a few Vipers. I hadn't watched it before -- we normally avoided it because of the noise and exhaust fumes -- so this was the first time I've sat through it. It's quite a spectacle.

Today is the annual ribs BBQ hosted by my sister and brother-in law. They have it at their clubhouse down by the Bourbeuse River. It's been interesting over the years to watch all the little kids grow up and some even have their own little ones now! It's a cool, foggy, very humid day so sitting outside will be tolerable. Some years it's so hot you can hardly stand it and some years it pours rain! I'm taking sweet corn from our garden that we cut off the ears and froze earlier this summer.

Got my second batch of hot peppers cold-smoked, chopped up and put into a brine in the fermentation jar yesterday. Now I just wait!

That sounds awesome Draclvr. Barbecue is my favorite.

Although the ribs are wonderful, I think I like all the sides that everyone brings just as much!

I wen down to the marina and sat in our boat Ursus for an hour today, just sitting there listening to the wind and the water slapping the hull, thinking about all the happy hours we spent in it. Our belongings have been cleaned out, and it looks rather sad and and empty and dirty. I realized that keeping it really would be an expensive mistake. It was just too strange sitting there by myself looking at that empty captain's seat. I'm taking it out and selling it. I can always hire someone to take me out for a day. It's a difficult decision, but it's the right one.

Those sound delicious Drac ... we had BBQ ribs today also ... potato salad or slaw is my favorite side but sweet corn is good to SpaceQF

Perhaps that's exactly what you needed to do, hagatha. Experience the beloved boat without John. Now you know, it was about your shared experiences in the boat. It sounds like you have made the difficult, but right decision.

Yes, I think so. It's a great boat, designed for the water around here, so I'll have it hauled out and put it up for sale in the Spring.

I have a friend down the road who does Dragon Boat kayaking, and I think I'll ask her where she took lessons. It would be a different way of getting out on the water. People kayak around here all the time, though of course it takes a pretty calm day to venture out past the shoreline. Sill, people go quite a long way out on calm days. I sometimes see them right out in the middle of the channel. They don't don't get past Race Point, though -- it's nerve-wracking enough in a regular boat!

While I was down in the boat, I pulled out the fish bin that sits under the seat in a space behind a latched door, lay down on my back and wrote a goodbye note to the boat in Sharpie on the side of the space. You'd have to be really looking to see it, so I bet it stays for good.

Hagatha, that sounds like a good decision about the boat, however emotional, and hopefully the new kayaking adventure you have planned will be fun.

Fabulous BBQ yesterday - ate too much as usual! It rained most of the time, but my SIL had several tents set up, so we more or less stayed dry. When we got home, it hadn't rained here at all. Spotty showers were just everywhere. Another dark dreary day here, but I'm going to make some spaghetti sauce and can it for a friend.

Had a major screw-up morning -- I'd double-booked, two appointments for the exactly the same time -- and missed them both!

There are some days when it's just not worth getting out of bed, I guess.

I did manage to get over to the marina for a chat with the sales manager about selling Ursus. You know, it strikes me that naming something gives it power. If we hadn't named the boat Ursus, selling it wouldn't be so hard, I think. It would just be "the boat." At any rate, I 'm committed now because I gave up the boat slip.

Whatever you feel up to coping with is how you should go, hagatha. That's how I managed, anyway.

Ah, yes... major brain fog. I agree with your thought on giving something a name. It gives it more power.

The Sales Manager at the Boat dealership/service centre was a big surprise. I went in there expecting to have to battle for a good price, but instead he quoted me $20,000 more than I was hoping for, and they only take 10% off the price they get (they sell on consignment). Also, they'll store the boat over winter if necessary, for a nominal fee. Altogether a much more pleasant experience than I was expecting.

Now that it's done, I feel a lot better.

Another beautiful morning, but now the mornings are too nippy to sit outside with my cats. I was enjoying that; we never really sat out there because it's normally too windy, perched above the passage, but this has been a beautiful summer.

Later this morning I'm back off to the boat dealership with the boat's canvas and a couple of electric downriggers to sweeten the deal for whoever looks at the boat. Then I think I'll take a drive down the coastal highway to Comox or perhaps to Qualicum.

Hagatha be careful of those wasps. A few years ago we actually had them nesting in an outside wall of the house and they somehow, from there, starting showing up in our finished walkout basement! It took my hubby Bill a while to figure out where the nest was and how to get rid of them!

Yesterday we stopped in at our local Library and they had a clinic set up to get the new Covid Booster so Bill and I got it...so far feeling fine just a sore arm.

Daughter Carrie has been having health issues lately and after testing found out she has a microscopic Giardia parasite! Apparently you can get it from contaminated water and it is quite common in USA. She and hubby do a lot of camping and visiting mineral springs in New Mexico so she could have picked it up almost anywhere. From what I've read you can even get it rinsing veggies with contaminated water! Doctor have her a single dose antibiotic...2 grams (4 pills). Now its wait and see.

Good morning, Danish, Donuts, and Bagels in the Break Room. Gerry, I hope your sister gets better quickly. A Sam's trip today, dinner and karaoke at the Eagles tonight. Hagatha, I'm jealous of your chilly mornings, it still like a sauna here.

And another beautiful morning here heading into another beautiful warm day. Perfect for hosting my god-daughter, husband and 3 little boys, her mom, and my older son and his family! I'm serving pulled pork sandwiches - cooked the meat yesterday - and hot dogs for the kids to roast over the bonfire. Made my mom's ancient old recipe for baked beans, a cole slaw, a hash brown casserole yesterday too. All I have to do today is make a tomato/balsamic vinegar dish and am going to try a new recipe for honey butter jalapeno rolls! Of course, there will be S'mores later.

Draclvr, that all sounds delicious.

I'm still not up for a lot of cooking but this week I put together a big pot of a Mexican-style quinoa dish with black beans, corn and Rotel with cumin, ancho and chipotle peppers. Dead simple, tastes good and lasts four nights. I add lime juice, coriander and cilantro to top it, and some avocado sometimes.

The cats are going crazy this morning, chasing each other around the house. I've noticed with all of my cats that when the weather changes in the Fall (and Spring) they become quite lively for some reason. Anyway, they seem to be pretty happy these days.

Gerry my dear friend, so good to see you! I hope the antibiotics work for your daughter.

I've been back in my dark place for a while. There's been a lot of days when I didn't even want to see anyone let alone speak to them. My dear sister's near death on top of my hubby's illness and another sister's recent illness has taken it's toll on my mental health. Add to that that I was targetted by a phone scam and almost lost all of our savings....luckily I realised in time before any damage was done, but it has made me paranoid. Right, enough about me.

Hubby's visit with his oncologist went well. He has put on another stone in weight, he is now 11st 10lb. He is still in a lot of pain but the oncologist is almost certain it's not a return of the cancer, rather it's due to the fact that his spine was compressed due to the tumours. He arranged for another CT scan just to make sure. We are still waiting for that appointment. He also arranged an echocardiogram because one of the drugs used during chemo can affect the heart but the cardiologist seemed quite happy about things. About his difficulty walking: this will not improve because the chemo severely damaged some nerves. His legs have been swelling so he put him on a diuretic to get rid of excess fluid and I'm happy to say it's made a big difference.

So nice to see you stop by, Mary! You have definitely had your life's plate full. Sometimes you just have to go "away" for a little while to recover. Very nice to hear your hubby is doing so well! And GOOD FOR YOU on figuring out that phone scam! I won't even speak to someone I don't know - I just hang up. They are very clever.

I was tired last night, but we got in a nice bonfire and S'mores for the kids before it rained later. Hubby left the pool open so the little boys could swim which they did all afternoon in spite of the water being very cold! We will close it up for the winter before the leaves start falling.

Mary, how wonderful that your husband is doing better.

My John also had difficulty walking once the cancer and chemo got into the nerves. I bought him the best walker I could find; cherry-red, with a bicycle bell and a holder for a can of beer. It made a huge difference in the last year of his life, when walking became near-impossible. He didn't want to use it at first, but he came around quickly when he realized it meant we could still go out together.

We've been inundated with smoke from various forest fires. Even with the doors and windows firmly shut, my house reeks of smoke and my asthma is kicking up badly. I can hardly see across the channel. Hope this doesn't last. We badly need rain.

This smoke almost makes it feel like i's going to rain, it's so gloomy. If only we really could get some rain! The smoke is so bad I woke up with a sore throat in the middle of the night.

The cruise ships have mostly stopped now and the channel has gone back to being a working waterway. Right now a massive tug is going by, very close to shore, towing a huge barge. There are still lots of yachts around. They don't start to disappear until mid-October. Many of the eco-tours will be heading up to the mouth of the Brem River now, looking for grizzlies.

If this is going to persist even inside your home, what about one of those room air purifiers at least for your bedroom? Some are made specifically for smoke.

I do have one somewhere. I'll take a look in the basement.

I'm having a nice strong cappuccino on the deck with two happy cats. I'm out of town for a night and I've stuffed them full so they don't get hangry and pick on each other. I do have a neighbour coming over to feed them later on and in the morning, but it's a long time between feeds, and I've noticed they start to annoy each other when they're hungry.

On a whim I took John's practically new SUV in to the dealership and asked what they'd give me. I was surprised at how much they offered. It was such a good deal I sold it on the spot. Now I have a large space to use for a staging area when I start to clear out all of the old stuff we've carted around for decades -- like the 45-year old canvas tent we used 40 years ago when camping was all we could afford. We're having a very windy, cold evening and I'm actually breaking out the winter clothes.

I just came back from an overnight trip to Comox for a photography club meeting. John bought me a camera a few years back, and we took photos from the boat, but as he got sicker we no longer did that -- he could no longer lift his camera and the large lenses. Since I have all this gear, I thought I'd check it out. It was kind of a treat -- a night away from home, a great meal in my favourite restaurant, and meeting new people. I'll see how that goes, but it does mean driving home in the dark on the highway, which is not lit.

Driving on an unlit highway is normal around here. Just did it as a matter of fact on the way home from bowling! Especially out here it in the country it is very dark. Luckily, I am still able to drive in the dark.

My eyesight is okay. I do need to get a new prescription for my glasses, though.

The biggest worry around here, as in any rural setting, is hitting a deer or a bear on the road. I used to drive at night all the time when I was working but this is a new thing for me and I'll have to be careful. I could afford a night in a hotel once a month but the nicest place, the one I had my eye on, is booked right up to Christmas. The one I stayed on last night was okay but expensive and I wouldn't go back there.

Oh, especially this time of the year, I have to keep my eyes checking both sides of the road as the deer are really moving right now.

Yes. one has to keep on eye on the road and unfortunately it is not only at night and on the country roads, just 5 days ago and at 6:30 PM (still light outside) he hit a bear on the highway while driving back home from work. His car is totaled, all but one of his Airbags deployed, luckily for him he only had a few bruises from the airbags. To this day he still has ringing in his ears from the Loud Noises from the airbags, as for the bear, unknown if he is still alive or not, it was seen hobbling into the woods.

My dear daughter Carrie is having a colonoscopy today...please keep her in your prayers. She has been having issues with her digestive tract...she has Celiac Disease and even gluten free foods have started to bother her. She has lost weight...down to 97 lbs.

The days are closing in now, getting dark at 7pm and cold in the morning.

The upside of that is that the dawn chorus outside my bedroom door doesn't start until it gets light at 6:30. I'm no longer treated to door-scratching, not since I threw a slipper at the door a few times, but the howls start quietly and move up to a crescendo as the sun appears over the horizon, until I finally get up. Then it's all innocence and big eyes. Dude knows better. He lets Willow do all the dirty work while he lounges on the couch.

This is why my friend Kim got automatic feeders. There was no sleeping past 5 am for her, no matter the time of the year! She has one for each cat and can control how much and when it dispenses breakfast, lunch and dinner. I'm taking care of her kitties while they are away camping for a week and a half and all I have to do is clean the litter boxes and give them some lap time! Otherwise she would have to board them.

Your descriptions of Dude and Willow's antics are classic, hagatha! Thank you for the smile that reading that brought to my face.

I thought I had ordered one for Willow, but I guess I didn't. More brain fog. I'm not sure it would work for me, anyway. Dude has to have wet food. He doesn't drink water, ever. I have literally never seen him drink in the 11 months since we got him. The vet told me he's a bit dehydrated, so I mix a tablespoon of water into his wet food. And of course, there would be cries of unfair treatment if Willow got fed at 5 am and Dude had to wait. The only time there's any real friction between them is when they're hangry.

Maybe you could do like Kim does and just have a very small amount drop for her one cat that has weight control issues?

I actually found one on Amazon that delivers wet food and has cooling packs for overnight. I ordered two of them. Apparently you can record a message for the cats, too.

Willow will catch on quickly -- she's really good at solving those food puzzles -- but Dude might have some trouble at first because he's skittish and really cautious around new things. He's pretty smart, though. Once he watches Willow using hers he'll probably catch on.

I didn't know there was such a thing! Now you can be gone overnight and no one will starve!

Of course, if they get fed at 5 am, they'll be clamouring for food at 4 in the afternoon. Dude just starts peeping at me, but Willow puts on a full-on charm offensive, rolling on her back at my feet, reaching up and patting me on the leg, and nipping my ankles.

LOL! I can just see that! Just set the feeders up to feed them again at 4! Of course, then you'd miss the charm offensive!

The charm offensive is adorable for about five minutes. And I've started calling Dude "Mr. Peeps" because he has such an odd little meow. It's a two-note affair, low-high, low-high, low-high, sounding rather like a small kazoo. Exactly that, three times. Again, cute for about five minutes. It's a good thing they've really started to play together; they do keep each other busy on and of through the day.

Nice to have their company, though, hagatha ?? Whether there's a charm offensive going or not

I don't know how often this happens but just want to put a reminder out there to watch the food you put in your mouth! I just found a piece of glass or hard plastic 3/4" long, pointy on both ends and curved (like a claw) which I think might be from a bottle neck or something, on my plate. Fortunately, I wasn't shoveling the food into my mouth while looking at my computer like I often do because my teeth and gums are really bad as it is without biting into that. I had four things in the pan at the same time (an egg, margarine, cooked couscous, and cooked corned beef) so I'm not really sure what it was in.

Watched all the coverage of the Queen's funeral yesterday. Such a beautiful day and moving ceremony at Windsor Castle. It brought me to tears watching the Queen's bagpiper playing as he walked away...and the removing of the crown, scepter, and orb from a top the casket. A sad moment. The Queen was a beautiful person and I share in the the sadness of all who loved her.

Yes. The state funeral of Queen Eilzabeth was carried out in the fully majestic manner deserved. She was a wonderful person and her service as monarch is not likely ever to be matched.

I truly admired and respected her.

I did, soot, in spite of the record high temps here. 97 degrees F here today! But I bottled up 11 more bottles of fermented hot sauce and picked another bucket of ripe jalapenos. They will go on the smoker tomorrow to eventually become chipotles.

The two automatic cat feeders arrived today. Aside from some difficulty in getting the timer to set, it seems straightforward enough.

I wasn't able to test it by setting the evening feeding to be the first feeding -- it won't allow that, only the morning and evening feeding in that order. So I won't get to know if it works until tomorrow morning.

Dude is just afraid of his, but Willow thinks it's a new food puzzle and won't leave hers alone.

My friend finally had to put hers on slip proof mats because the one cat would play with his until he knocked it over!

These ones are flat discs, so a cat wouldn't be able to overturn it, not even a determined Willow, and she's been poking at hers on and off for hours. Dude is still terrified of his even though the food smell is obvious even to me. Once the cats are used to them I'll just put them on their rubber feeding mats.

That sums up the characters of the two cats, though -- Willow curious, ad Dude scared.

The feeders worked, and I came upstairs to see two very confused cats who had eaten half of their grub and are now grudgingly eating the rest after a bit of pestering me to return things to normal. My only complaint is that the cups that hold the food are very deep, and Willow hates that. However, she valiantly soldiered on by scooping her dry food out with her paw. And hunger clearly overcomes fear in Dude's case.

Maybe I will no longer be subjected to the dawn chorus? Dare I hope?

After a busy week I'm having a nothing day. A cup of chai, some gaming, maybe a couple of hours of TV in the evening. Even the feline companion animals are feeling lazy. I think I'll make a vat of my Mexican quinoa dish again.

Really? I have to mix up another gallon of hummingbird food?! It's been too stinking cold the last 2 nights to have my window open, but it's a beautiful morning, so I will open it so I can listen to them chittering and squeaking.

And I can happily report that the feeders are a success. I've slept until 7:30 for the last two mornings, getting 7 1/2 hours of sleep for the first time in ages.

The only thing is that Willow considers the food in the feeder to be stray food that somehow happened to find its way into a bowl in the kitchen. When I get up she still thinks she's supposed to get fed. Furry logic. However, it's been a roaring success otherwise.

Yippee! Has Dude lost his fear of the feeder once it dispense - FOOD!

John must have been feeding them early in the morning because I haven't slept past around 5:30 am for months. I guess Willow's been waking me up all this time. I've been sleeping reasonably well considering the circumstances, just waking up far too early in the morning.

A few of months ago I discovered a new sleep aid that seems to help a lot, too; it's CBN, which is a cannabis derivative, different from CBD. The oil that I use seems to give a longer, deeper sleep. There is a bit of research on its effects, and it looks quite promising. Sleep has been a huge issue all my life, so it's nice to find a non-habit forming product that works.

Very cold this morning, with a very thick fog. The house was only 64 degrees when I got up. Time to start turning on the heat, even if only for a few hours.

Yes. Here in the North West of the UK, where I live, only a couple of weeks ago the heat and humidity were both unbearable with one heat wave following another.

But the temperature has crashed down over the last few days and I had to put heating on for a couple of hours both yesterday and today !!

We don't seem to get properly distinguished "season" any more. Just seeming to go straight from Winter to Summer without a any real Spring and Summer to Winter without any real Autumn.

And I can't say I like it at all

There are several whale-watching boats just offshore here, with three or four Humpbacks slowly cruising past, probably asleep. Looks like there's a young one with its mother.

How cool is that, hagatha! We are having a proper warmish fall day here. The Catholic Church and school in town have their Fall Festival the 4th Friday in September every year. Some years it's hot as Hades, but this year is a beautiful warm day. We will be going to to have a few beers with friends and then eat before we leave. They serve fried chicken dinners.

That sounds like what has been going on here, too. Early September we broke records with 106 degrees Fahrenheit (41 Celsius) to 38 degrees Fahrenheit (3 Celsius) in the early morning hours a couple of weeks later. I call this getting weather whiplash.

I have also noticed shorter and shorter transitions from Summer to Winter and Winter to Summer, with sometimes Autumn and Spring scarcely to be found.

We had a forest fire just north of here, really not very far away at all, maybe a mile or two. The helicopters were running non-stop al day. I was actually worried enough to make a list of things to grab and started to put them all together by the garage door. Fortunately they got it out and it looks like it's going to rain tomorrow.

We're heading into our rainy season, which is about 8 months long. Most fires in BC should be out fairly soon.

This close call got me thinking about how I need to have a plan for evacuations in case of any kind of natural disaster (here it's fire or earthquake). I made a list of things I need to have ready to go, including my medications, computer and all of John's backup drives with his photos, his urn, obviously the cats, food, water, important documents, etc. That way if I have some leeway time-wise I could add some extras like my best jewelry, which is all in one place, and then some clothing.

Prayers heading up that everyone in the path of the storm gets through safely.

I was just watching a video segment on Ian in the news. Terrifying storm surges. I hope everyone is okay.

I was watching awhile ago also. Last night I heard from a friend of mine who is at her condo in Naples. She said at that time there was a lot of rain and some tornadoes. Waiting and hoping to hear from a different friend who I'm pretty sure lives in Ft Myers. Really powerful stuff there!

Lots of road flooding and debris all around. My house is dry as I'm on the high end of the street. Some of my neighbors did not do as well. The clean up now begins. It was just such a long storm, lasted forever it seemed. I hope Orion and his family are OK. My prayers are with those that didn't do as well.

I was very naughty at the retirement party yesterday and had TWO chili dogs with cheese, so I will have to pass on that yummy cinnamon crunch bagel! But if I say so myself, my huge batch of chili turned out awesome. Tried something new as I was going to have to buy at least 12 cans of chili beans. I made my own from dried kidney beans - turned out far better than I could have imagined and they only took about 2 1/2 hours to cook.

I love Chili but usually only make one good pot a year. Last year I skipped because the ground beef was too expensive. This summer it was on sale pretty often, so I already have some waiting for the pot .

Another gorgeous warm day today. Unfortunately, it's supposed to be quite cold the next two days with a chance of frost on Friday night. But then back up to beautiful temps. Also unfortunately, no rain.

Still working up tomatoes - got 2 1/2 gallons of tomato puree for my friend, Kim. She freezes it and then thaws out to make spaghetti, chili and pizza sauce to can later when she has more time. Also got 6 more quarts for me! Yippee! Today I'm bottling up my latest batch of hot sauce made from lightly smoked hot peppers. Then league bowling tonight.

Same here! We barely escaped a freeze last night. But it was sunny and beautiful today. I made a one-gallon batch of stewed tomatoes for a fish fry tomorrow at a local tavern. Then made a good dinner and am now sitting in front of my computer with a glass of wine! A good day.

Busy day for me. A friend is doing a fish fry at a local tavern called Elmer's in town this afternoon. I blanched, peeled and chopped a gallon of tomatoes yesterday, added celery, onions, green peppers and seasonings to make stewed tomatoes to contribute. Then we have to come home early as my daughter-in-law's parents are driving through on their way back to the east coast and are spending the night. I'm making them dinner and breakfast tomorrow morning before they head out. So, I have a lot of prep work to do this morning.

I'll have a cinnamon crunch bagel with my coffee this morning

Woke up very early this morning because I was freezing. I guess it's time to turn on the heat. My Hydro bill has gone up a lot since we bought the heat pump, but my gas bill is nothing, especially since I stopped using my gas oven when I bought the convection/toaster oven. Seems like a good tradeoff. I don't use the gas fireplace much; it overheats the house far too quickly.

I hate waking up really early; if I get up for a coffee I'm immediately accosted by what seems like a swarm of starving cats, and if I feed them at 5 am they'll be hounding me for their dinners at 3 in the afternoon. Dude watches and learns bad habits from Willow, and one of the things he's learned is that if you bug your humans enough they will give you food.

Bella, my Bloodhound is like that! Hubby feeds her in the morning and if it's earlier than usual, she lets me know she is going to perish of hunger 2 hours before her afternoon meal! We have to keep her weight down as much as possible because these giant breeds really suffer with joint and other issues if they are overweight. They are subject to something called bloat, so we feed her 2 cups in the morning and 2 cups in the afternoon. I let her have a couple of big Milkbones in the middle of the day to help. "Poor thing" still weight 110 pounds!

Got a little rain last night and I might actually take the day off other than finishing clean-up after cook for our guests this weekend.

No early bird here, Gerry! I always say I got up at 5 am for WAY too many years. Now I stay up late and read and now I sleep in until about 8:00!

Cooking up a couple buckets of tomatoes and then putting them through the tomato press to make sauce for a friend. She normally comes out and does it herself, but although retired, she's been working insane hours at a local restaurant that is having trouble finding good help. I will put the sauce into a couple of smaller clean buckets and then she freezes in Zip Loc bags to thaw out and make into chili, spaghetti and pizza sauces.

Have to drop my truck off to get new tires this morning too. A busy day!

Your homemade sauce sounds delicious draclvr...nothing better then that! What a lucky friend!

It is really good, Gerry. I've gotten to where I don't think I could open up a jar of Ragu if I had to! I already have many gallons of all the stuff on my shelves, so I'm just glad I have someone who can use it!

Our lovely weather and the continued drought are still ongoing.

I had my COVID booster last week and thankfully had no reaction at all this time, not even the sore arm I had every other time. My friend and I are off to a comedy night tonight in town. Since it's local talent, it's probably going to be pretty lame, but it's a night out.

Kaki's Sister currently it's 8.11PM & our rural town Seymour has been flooded by constant heavy rains, thankfully our house is on top of a hill & we're away from the flooded area - two of our supermarkets are flooded but we still have one supermarket opened for supplies thank goodness.
Two other towns are badly flooded as well -Werribee and Maribyrnong I feel sorry for the people whose homes were flooded.

The comedy evening was pretty good, though the acts were all young people telling non-stop off-colour jokes. It all became rather predictable by the third act. However, the food was good; it's one of our few decent places to eat here in town.

today I'm tackling the paperwork for medical claims. I've been putting it off but the pile is getting larger and larger and I really have to get to it. So that's my day.

Taintedfury how scary to be so close to the flooding...glad to hear you are safe. Time wise, it looks like my day is just beginning when yours is ending. We are into Fall and the leaves are turning...not as brilliant this year because we have been experiencing a drought this year...but it has been raining lately so it is getting better.

Hagatha and soot we got our Flu shots yesterday and Covid booster a few weeks ago...feeling safer for now. I know what you mean about Fridays Draclvr...since I retired many years ago I still look at Friday as the start to my time off...I try not to schedule any chores on the weekend...just relax and enjoy! Good morning, everyone. TaintedFury, I hope the worst of the flooding is over. Cleanup can be awful.

I got my flu shot several weeks ago and have my COVID booster scheduled for Monday. Hubby got both of his at the same time yesterday. He has felt pretty awful for about 12 hours with his previous boosters, but just has a slight headache today. I never have had any reaction at all to any of them.

Today is applesauce day! Two friends and I are working up a bushel of Jonagold apples to turn into wonderful unsweetened spiced applesauce to enjoy all year. We quarter them and cook down until they are soft, then put them through my magical electric Italian tomato press which puts the sauce through a sieve to one place and the skins and seeds out the end. The chickens get those! Then we return to the big pots, add cinnamon and nutmeg until it tastes right and then pressure can for food safety. SO good all winter long!

Then I will make home made pizzas for everyone. By then all the hubbys will be here to watch us work! I only have time for some black coffee this morning before I start cooking ahead for the pizza toppings. I'll make my dough later this afternoon.

AND a beautiful sunny day to top it all off! Enjoy the weekend, everyon!

I'm joining some friends tonight for what is billed as a "Wearable Art" show at our local gallery. Something to do with clothing. Could be fun. I wonder if I should wear a pair of my more outrageous shoes, in keeping with the theme? One of my friends used to own a very nice clothing store here in town before she retired, so she'll be all dressed up. I have no idea what it's all about, actually, but it's a night out.

We've had a wonderful Orca day today. Around 10 am a pod went north; one of them breached several times, and the little one was practicing tail-slaps.

A few minutes ago a small pod passed just offshore, maybe 100 feet from the water's edge. They were close enough to scare Dude back into the house from his upstairs balcony.

The Wearable Art show was not bad, actually. Some of the costumes were quite wonderful...and some were horribly lame. A couple them were too depressing and didactic. The majority, however, were exuberant and fun.

Space Q, LOL!!! I do love good bacon, but I'll just stick to my black coffee this morning.

We are supposed to get our first hard freeze tomorrow night, so I will go out to the garden this afternoon and pick everything and bring it in to the garage. There are still TONS of huge green tomatoes out there - probably several 5-gallon buckets. Hubby is going to set up a small heater in the garage so it doesn't freeze in there.

Applesauce Day was a huge success. We got 30 pints of wonderful applesauce with just cinnamon and nutmeg in it. The home made pizza was exceptionally good and the weather was great. Bella the Bloodhound probably enjoyed herself the most with all the attention from everyone. The three hubbys just sat around and drank beer while we worked. A good day, indeed. Drac was tired and slept in late this morning!

COVID booster at noon. Then finishing up disconnecting hoses and getting snug places for my two barn cats ready for the coming hard freeze tonight. Got 4 huge heaping buckets of green tomatoes out of the garden yesterday. Bella the Bloodhound has her favorite thing set up on the hummingbird porch just outside my window... a straw bale nest. If it's cold, she sleeps inside in the sunporch, but prefers to be outside during the day. Sometimes she has to share it with a cat or two!

So, cold weather... bring it!

She is heading in for her 3rd cancer surgery today and praying it's all contained and can be removed entirely. Good morning, Danish, Donuts and Bagels in the Break Room. Breakfast out this morning, going to Wild Florida this afternoon.

It's very cold and dark this morning.

We still haven't had any rain. In fact, I don't think we've had more than about five days of rain all summer. We're well supplied with water here because our hydro and drinking water are both supplied by large lake reservoirs, but all over BC the salmon barely have enough water to get upstream.

My cats are talking to each other. That means they're about to start chasing each other around the house like a couple of kittens. Too cute.

Good morning, everyone! Another beautiful warm fall day here. That's supposed to come to a halt Tuesday and a chance of rain. It's so dry here, we can't get the tomato plants out of the ground. We may have to cut the vines off at the ground and haul them off.

Got my onions chopped up and dehydrated yesterday. Going to be so nice to have them for lots of stuff this winter. Today I will start working on the garlic - I've got about 4 pounds of garlic to work up. I will chop and dehydrate some and just clean up the rest for fresh garlic.

Good morning, Danish, Donuts and Bagels in the Break Room. Gerry Wild Florida is a ride through Safari. There are all kinds of wild animals roaming loose. You drive through in your car, about 150 acres where the animals are free to roam.

Finally some rain. It wasn't enough to ease the drought in some areas, but at least our risk of fires has dropped along the coast. We're getting into our dreary dark mornings.

Gerry, I'm usually up until the wee hours of the morning but am trying to be better. Some days though it just doesn't work. I'm glad you asked Connie about Wild Florida. I was wondering too.

I'm assuming you enjoyed the Safari ride connie? I hope so anyway! It sounds interesting.

We're expecting some rain this week. I think we're below average this year but there's been enough for me.

Good afternoon everyone Are there any Cinnamon Crunch bagels left Connie? We're getting ready for a line of storms to sweep through our area for the next couple of hours. The rain will be good -- we can use it ... will pass on the severe weather aspect. Have a great evening everyone.

Well, the rains have finally come. It was also cold enough to be very slippery on the highway once I reached the higher levels on my way to Comox. I think we'll be getting snowfall in the mountains soon.

Since I sold John's big SUV I decided to put snow tires on my Accord this year. It handles well in snow but I'm driving to Victoria in a couple of weeks and there's no way my all-seasons can handle the drive over the Malahat and down the other side on that narrow, crazy curvy road. It's scary enough in the summer and there's always an accident.

The Malahat always reminds me of my late father-in-law. He was an RAF bomber pilot in WWII, flying Avro Lancasters. He was shot down twice, once behind enemy line, and both times was the only survivor. To help get him over his trauma, the RAF sent him to Canada, to train new fighter pilots, and he was stationed here on Vancouver Island, in Comox AFB. He and his pals used to drive their car, called Lizzie, down to Victoria, and at that time the road was merely a dirt road. He used to tell us about their adventures getting that car over the Malahat, which was treacherous at best, and he had a couple of pictures of him and his mates at the very peak of the drive. I wonder if we have them stashed away somewhere? I should look.

What great stories! We finally got rain here too today - first measurable rain in nearly 3 months. It was so terribly dry and there have been some wildfires in the southern part of the state in the National Forests.

After a long day of chilly rain yesterday, it's bright and sunny today. Everything needed rain so badly, I didn't even complain about losing a day! I'll settle in with some of that Dark Sumatra coffee and TRY to resist a cinnamon crunch bagel!

It was rainy and colder here today.

Nasty here, too, cold, windy and rainy. Winter hit with a bang. Our reservoirs needed the water, so that's good, but the dry soil is going to have a hard time absorbing all that water. Could be some slides.

All this talk of bagels makes me wish we had a bakery here that made real bagels; not the soft bready ones, but the Montreal-style bagel, chewy and slightly sour.

Maybe there's somewhere online where you could order such bagels, hagatha.

I did make bagels once, around 25 years ago. They came out quite well. It's a lot of work, though. I have made a sourdough starter; it's percolating away getting ready for use. I haven't made bread for ten years. but I used to enjoy it a lot on these long rainy days. My bread machine makes a normal-shaped loaf, but most often I use the no-knead method and bake in the oven.

Most of my experience has been in eating bagels.

Good morning, Danish, Donuts and Bagels in the Break Room. Robert is taking me to Howl-O-Scream at SeaWorld tonight, he won the tickets on the radio.

Lex, it's true that I have the coffee machine and the other equipment, but I hate getting up early and so it would be the lamest coffee shop/bakery ever, opening at 10 am when everyone's at work already.

The espresso machine is a nice thing to have, though. The coffees it makes are vastly superior to Starbuck's, though not as good as my favourite coffee shop here in town. I'm still experimenting with the beans; I can't seem to find a brand that's just right. With the espresso machine I need a slightly darker roast than I was using in the stovetop pot, but with a darker roast you start to run into the bitter end of the bean spectrum.

It's rained all week, putting an end to the fire risk on the coast here.

How cool that Robert won the tickets.

Looks like we're in for a big storm again this weekend. I'd better bring in the outdoor furniture.

Nice lazy start to a Saturday with my weekly "treat" breakfast of a slice of bacon and a small glass of OJ along with my black coffee! I fix hubby his big biscuits and gravy breakfast with eggs and bacon. I just can't eat that much in the morning.

Taking another day off to go to a benefit and then a winery this afternoon with friends. Feeling a little guilty when I look at the housework I've been neglecting while working up all my end-of-the-garden produce! Oh, well. It will still be there tomorrow, right?!

Considering there's just me and one cat, my house is messier than it should be. I'm in a very lazy phase right now. My sleep is not great, and I'm tired all the time. I vacuum every day, though you wouldn't know it, since Dude is like Pig Pen in the Charlie Brown comics; everywhere he goes, he leaves a trail of fluff and fur and leaves from out on the balconies. I brush him at least twice a day and still there's fur everywhere.

Good afternoon, went shopping this morning. We had a scary Great time last night. Halloween Party at the Eagles tonight. I will be a witch, Robert won't tell what he is going as it's a secret.

Hagatha, you said it's just you and one cat? I thought you had Willow and Dude?

Busy times here and I'm working all day today. I'm already exhausted with two days of evening work and today I'm taking 2 pups to a wedding in the country of their parents. I just got off work for the morning and and have a 2 hour break before the wedding dog duties begin. I am really looking forward to tomorrow where all I have is 3 boarders, Nugget and nothing else! I can get caught up on things before I start over on Monday!

And we were glad to hear Nugget is OK again!

The SPCA had Dude described as a lazy old cat who would sometimes play but mostly wanted to sleep. Nothing could be farther from the truth! He's the feline version of the Energizer Bunny. In, fact, it's Willow who is the lazy one. I can't take her out for walks anymore because we have a cougar roaming our neighbourhood, so she sleeps and eats and can be roused to play with enough provocation.

Whew! You had me worried there hagatha! I was afraid to come back to read your reply!

Ana, I hope Nugget has forgiven you!

No, it was just a poor edit. I was going to say that have two cats but one of them makes all the mess, and didn't edit the sentence properly. Willow is alive and well and annoying me right now because it's getting close to dinner. They get hangry and start swatting each other. I's hilarious.

I got all more chores done today which means I can have a lazy Sunday.

Beggars night here. Bring on the kiddies.

Most of the houses are dark (like mine is). I don't know if there are any trick-or-treaters out there. I haven't heard any. But somebody thinks it is the 4th of July. A lot of booming fireworks out there.

Since we live out in the country, we don't get trick or treaters. But the neighbor's daughters each have little ones. So, every year, they walk over to trick or treat here! They were just adorable in their little costumes. And we got to sit outside and talk to the girls. Bella the Bloodhound was in heaven with the little guys here... she just loves them. But that was it! So, now I have a bunch of candy to get rid of. Neither hubby or I eat the stuff!

I completely forgot about Halloween, but the kiddies won't come here anyway since I have no decorations.

I was at the hospital today for the yearly torture scan, and it was a surreal experience for me. I hadn't been there since John died, but we must have been there hundreds of times over the years, and he was there for almost two months in May and June so it felt like a kind of home away from home. It was almost as though if I went to the elevator, and pushed the button for the third floor ward where he stayed for those two months...well, it felt like a strange version of Schrodinger's Cat, where he could still be there as long as I didn't go up there and see that he wasn't. The strangest things go through my head sometimes.

I'm all set for my trip to Victoria on Monday, going down there for two nights and back on Tuesday. It's just a little jaunt for fun. I hope the weather isn't too awful.

Draclvr, I could set Dude's feeder and he'd be fine with it, but Willow just won't use hers. She'd rather wait outside my door until I get up, even if all I do is lead her to the feeder and point. If I don't get up for a while, Dude just goes over and eats her food while she's waiting at my door. The little ratbag is blatant about it, too; he doesn't even try to hide it. At least my hissing and slipper-throwing have resulted in her not bothering me early in the morning.

My neighbour feeds them when I'm not around. She loves the cats, especially now that Dude is her friend. We all look after our neighbour's pets. I'm on cat duty for a week in December for another neighbour's downstairs tenant.

I take care of a friend's cats while they're away camping several times during the spring, summer and fall. Her cats both use their feeders and she had a slight delay set so the more aggressive one's food drops first. I go in town every other day to clean litter boxes, water plants and give The Boyz some laptime!

Good Morning everyone and Happy Thursday! Hagatha and Draclvr I also take care of my neighbor's cat when they are away...next time in December for 7 days. She is a British short hair...dark grey and very plump!

I had a tooth pulled yesterday...not a fun experience. The roots were curved so the extraction was difficult and had to have 3 stitches. My dentist could use a sewing class...not very straight stitching! Glad its over. Soup and liquids for me today and salt water rinses for a couple days too.

We're starting to have cold, sunny days with very cold nights now.

Yesterday afternoon a flash of light caught my eye on the water and I realized it was a dolphin. A smallish pod went by at full speed. They're such a joy to see. They always look like they're having fun.

What a treat, hagatha! Another warm sunny day here today... not normal for November. But I did get 3 daylily plants dug up, separated and replanted in a new spot. I planted some tall Asiatic lily bulbs in their place.

I did no gardening this year, so nothing to bring in. Maybe next year.

I looked out the window a few minutes ago and a Humpback breached, a backflip almost fully out of the water. They'll be leaving soon for warmer waters and the breeding grounds.

Woke up to a blizzard yesterday & just stopped snowing this morning. We got 20c of snow. Winter came in hard & fast.

Judith, I don't think I could stand your cold Alberta winters.

On the other hand, you get way more sun than we do, since it's always raining here in BC. I guess it's a tradeoff; cold and sunny versus warm and wet and dreary.

The last time I was in Edmonton in the winter I swore I'd never go back!

I was raised in Toronto and the winters there are abominable - extreme cold and wet at the same time, snow and slush and sleet and icy roads and grey skies. When I moved to BC I told my family they would never see me visiting except in the Fall. Toronto's 4 seasons are basically Bug Season, Hot and Humid season, Fall, and Ghastly Winter season.

Good morning, oldbroad! Same weather here... the wind blew so hard last night it felt like this old farmhouse was going to take off! I'm getting in some of the Sumatra roast because I have to work our last Wagon Days at Longmeadow all day. It's still only about 48° with that wind! NOT a great day to be outside all day! It was 80° here yesterday, so it's quite a change!

Snow! Just in time for my drive down the coast on the highway, which is a few hundred feet above sea level and is bound to be completely covered. Looks like those snow tires are going to be needed.

Sleet, hagatha? Oh, my.. my LEAST favorite form of water from the sky!

I was so cold after being outside in the brutal high winds and 45° weather all day yesterday, I had to take a hot shower when I got home! Amazingly almost 200 people showed up for our last Wagon Days.

Today, I'm roasting a turkey for our American Legion Buddy Supper tonight. In 1923 there was a song called "My Buddy" about the wives and loved ones missing their soldiers while they were away at war. Our Auxiliary puts on a full turkey and dressing dinner for our veterans. I think we are doing 5 turkeys and one ham. Our Auxiliary president has put together a Power Point presentation with photos of our veterans including those who have passed from "back in the day" when they were first enlisted or deployed. Some of it is pretty humerous!

Welcome back Hagatha, happy to hear you enjoyed the trip. Hey Ho TaintedFury, sleep well tonight. Hi Gerry, I'll start with the Dark Roast Sumatra coffee and a bagel from Connie ... yes indeed, it's Friday eve. Have a wonderful day everyone.

Draclvr, the first night we asked the hotel staff what was good. They recommended Ten Acres, which is all locally-sourced food, and a couple of other places nearby. We went for a wander and happened to come across the restaurant by chance. It was wonderful; a very warm, modern atmosphere spread over three rooms the way restaurants in old buildings are. Both of us had the seafood cannelloni, and t was truly wonderful. Then pumpkin cheesecake. I'd definitely go back there. The next night was a hipster Vietnamese place, which was also very good but not great.

We also did a lot of window-shopping. and both of us had forgotten that in big cities the shops are not only open on Sundays, they're open until 8 and 9 o'clock. So very civilized.

The seafood cannelloni sounds heavenly! The whole thing sounds like a wonderful couple of days!

Victoria is a nice place to wander around since it's a smallish city. I think I'd move there eventually if it weren't for the fact that it's very hard to find a family doctor these days, and I'm not willing to give up my wonderful doctor.

Hagatha, pumkin cheese cake is one of my favorite deserts! Hope you enjoyed it! I know what you mean about giving up a doctor you trust...wouldn't be good idea.

Asiago bagels. Mmmmm. I love me some Asiago cheese.

I've been drinking a Milano Espresso Pudding, one of their specialty blends. It's less chocolatey than I normally like, but so smooth I can crank up the strength and not taste any bitter.

We're in full-on winter now, with the gloom and rain and the desire to turn on the fire and hibernate. I've been too lazy to go to the store so I'm using oat milk for my coffee instead of cow milk.

As Kaki's sister said, today is Veteran's Day in the US when we honor and thank all our veterans, past and present.

We went from 83° on Wednesday to 43° today! A little drastic even for Missouri!

It's our Remembrance Day here, too, remembering our fallen soldiers.
