Oh wow. Congratulations on reaching the next level!

We're expecting another storm front tonight. I gave out some heated hummingbird feeders to neighbours today because the hard freeze continues and the poor little things are having an awful time. I'm sire we've lost some.

We're all snugged up around the fire watching Mad Men and eating Christmas cookies in lieu of dinner. The cats still don't quite sit together, but they're closer and closer all the time. The fireplace is a huge draw for them. It's awfully sweet.

Congrats Connie! I'm catching up to you quickly!

Our winter storm is supposed to start tomorrow morning and go to Saturday morning. We will see what it brings. I turned my heat up one more degree today.

Good morning, Danish, Donuts and Bagels in the Break Room. Thanks everyone for the Congratulations. Congratulations oldbroad, you will catch up in no time. Our cold front moves in tomorrow. Plants pulled in to the greenhouse, and plastic put up on it. We don't have heat in the greenhouse because we rarely get a freeze.

Connie, depending on the size of your greenhouse, a 5-gallon bucket of very hot water with help immensely.

It's starting here - temps have dropped 11 degrees in 2 hours and the wind is picking up!

Well, I'm ready for whatever is coming! Cancelled my sleep test for tonight. Told the scheduler that I've lived in Chicagoland area long enough to know to not take any chances. She told me a lot of people rescheduling due to weather and travel plans. Funny thing is, that test has been moved to 2 days before my colonoscopy. When it rains it pours! Laughed about it with the scheduler who said her mother said these were supposed to be our 'golden' years.

Congrats to old broad and Connie on their achievement! Be a while before I get there

BTW, recent saw a movie (name?) where a character was texting using only emoticons. It looked really weird.

Our weather is running late but I do see a few scattered flurries starting to fall. Like Kaki's sister, I worry more about losing electricity (heat is gas but won't work without the electricity).

Last February we had to have our overhead garage door fixed, something with the cables. Last week it broke again due to something my brother did and they fixed it two days ago. Just now, the kid across the alley hit the door with his car and my brother says it will not open and will need to be replaced. All I can say is, thankfully he came over and owned up to it so hopefully he or his insurance will be paying for it. Meanwhile though, the car is stuck in the garage and this is not the time of year for my brother to have to be out walking everyday. Waiting to find out how long this will take and what all will be involved.

Oh, no! DEFINITELY not a good time to be on foot! I just walked out to the barn and it was just painful to be out there. -2°F with winds in the 30 - 50 mph range yet. If the wind would just die down, it would be more tolerable. Hope this gets fixed quickly, oldbroad. Not a good weekend for it to happen either.

Somehow my brother seems to have fallen under some bad karma or something. Last month he was rear-ended while sitting at a stop light, he said pretty hard, but thankfully no damage. Around that same time, a light bulb in his lamp burned out and while he was waiting for it to cool down or while he was trying to change it (I'm not sure exactly because his story telling sometimes confuses me) it started on fire. Fortunately, he was able to unplug the lamp and carry it to the sink. Weird!

Good Morning everyone! Hope you all are weathering the storm and keeping warm and safe. So far we have power, but the lights keep flickering...wind has increased and howling constantly. Another day for a double dark brew...tea and hot chocolate too.

Oh my yes, it is time for lots of Double Down Dark Roast coffee today with danish and bagels to boot! Thank you Gerry and Connie. Gerry, I hope your power holds out. The wind chill here in Alabama was a minus 4 this morning Connie. I didn't think the thermometers went that low

Very cold here, too. My heat pump is having trouble keeping up, so I have the in-floor heating going and the fireplace on.

The weather here isn't fit for man or beast but I have to head out to the grocery store for last minute things. baking is all done, only made three things this year: empire cookies & thumb print cookies & lemon squares. Merry Christmas to everyone here & Happy New Year. Be careful out there, what I hear on the news the road are terrible here in Canada as well as the US.

Drinking coffee now but later I move to the hot chocolate.

We lost power for about 3 hours yesterday evening...it was bitter, bitter cold and windy...we are thankful we got it back so soon. Temp right now is 5 degrees with feel like -16.

Lots of dark, dark brew, tea, and hot chocolate with whipped cream for everyone.

Taintedfury, thanks for the Christmas wishes. Connie that is amazingly cold for Florida and for you too soot! Hagatha nice to have that fireplace to keep you warm. Judith i love lemon squares...homemade yum! Oldbroad hot chocolate with lots of whipped cream for you!

We had a wind chill temp of 2 degrees this morning but it's warming up now...we've made it to 3 degrees...wow, it's chilly brrr cold...reminds me of my days in Colorado and Montana.

OMG! It's above zero F and only breezy instead of gale force winds... it's a heat wave!

Made hubby his weekly biscuits and gravy, eggs and bacon breakfast and now it's time to sit down with my morning coffee. I'm going to bake an apple pie a little later and am also going to do our Christmas rib roast for tonight. I had to sell a kidney to be able to afford it! It's just me and hubby for Christmas and we love it! I've saved a really good bottle or red wine for me.

Merry Christmas Eve

Walking around in a daze today, I need to slap myself to wake up & I'm still in my fuzzy housecoat, it must be the weather. Hagatha if you don't need to go out, stay cozy & warm in your house with the 2 cats, my daughter lives in Crofton & they got a huge dump of snow which is unusual for them. Soot, you couldn't drag me out of the house today. Just puttering around the house with last minute things; putting the candy dishes out with mixed nuts, chocolates & ferrero rocher; getting out the relish dish for my cranberries that I use once a year & the turkey is slowly thawing. This afternoon I'm pouring myself a nice glass of wine, putting lavender oil in the bath tub & going to have a nice long soak. Merry Christmas everyone.

I've got everything so it will be ready around 6:00 this evening. Unfortunately, after getting lucky the last several times the water lines froze to the washing machine, this time a line burst, so we've been cleaning up water in the laundry room and getting it so that we have water, just not hot water! Maybe be hitting my friend up for a hot shower on Monday!

Christmas dinner for our family used to be a beef roast, a pork roast, browned potatoes, apple sauce, and broccoli or cauliflower or a mix of both. My brother and I have not really celebrated holidays for over 10 years now and usually we just eat our own separate meals (sometimes just a frozen pizza) but this year and the two years prior I have managed to cook something for both of us. Two years ago I did have a pork roast; last year I made lasagna, and this year I made Moroccan Pastitsio for tomorrow. I hope he/we like it. I used ground beef though instead of the lamb due to the cost.

What does a normal Christmas dinner for you all consist of?

When my family was still home it was very traditional - just chicken instead of turkey - but with all the same delicious trimmings.

I will be making Ham, Mac&Cheese, Green Beans, Corn, Mashed Potatoes, and Rolls for dinner, there will be 11 of us. My youngest son and his wife can't be here as he has Covid. Drac and Judith have a glass of wine for me, and I will have one for you.

Oldbroad, the Morroccan Pastitsio sounds heavenly.

Back in the days when I cooked a full meal every night, I often chose Middle Eastern food in one guise or another -- I still have my father's cookbooks (he was an avid cook) and one of my favourites is Claudia Roden's A Book of Middle Eastern Food.. The pages are yellow and falling out but it's still one of the best cookbooks around.

Oldbroad, that sounds SO good! After all the rich food yesterday - including an apple pie - I'm ready for some Mexican or something like that dish you made!

OK this snow was a lot of fun but I'm looking foward to the sun returning.

I watched a funny YouTube video of a guy in Buffalo, New York walking his dog in 17 inches of snow. The doggie kept jumping from the tire tracks in the road to burying himself in the deep snow.

My son is coming over to fix this busted water pipe this morning. The only goal for MY day is a hot shower! Hubby and I can both sweat copper pipe, but we are just too old to get into the contorted positions needed here. My son did all the plumbing in his new house, so I'm hitting him up! Then we are calling the plumbing company to fix this issue once and for all.

It was sunny here yesterday but today it is just a little lighter than gloomy.

Draclvr, if your son is going to fix the pipe why do you need a plumbing company?

oldbroad, because the issue of WHY it keeps freezing up needs to be fixed once and for all. This is a 100+ year old farmhouse, so airtight it aint! This hot water pipe has been repaired several times - I did it myself the first time. I don't care if they have to tear up the floors and reroute the pipes! We're just getting too old to deal with this.

Oh great. Now we're going to get flooding in all the low-lying costal areas around Vancouver and eastern Vancouver Island, with the next high tide and massive rains we've had.

Fortunately we're on a high bank so our home won't be affected, but there are homes along the coastal highway that will be.

And ta da! We have hot water! This was a very tricky repair and there was a blue cloud of curse words coming out of the laundry room! But on the 6th try, the repair held under pressure! I thought very kindly of my son as I was taking my much-needed hot shower!

My son and his family are coming over tonight and I'm making home made pizza for them.

Good Morning and Happy last Friday of 2022! Missed the break room yesterday...internet was down...had to get a new modem. Our weather has changed...sunshine and warmer temps...was 43 degrees when I got up this morning! It is going to be a mild week in the 50s for the start of 2023.

We'll celebrate the New Year at home!

Happy New Year's Eve, everyone! We also celebrate at home. We will go in town and have a couple of beers at a local tavern with friends this afternoon and then will head home. I'm going to cook a nice dinner and open a bottle of wine. Tomorrow morning we will head in town for a steak and Bloody Mary breakfast at the American Legion. I will be making a big roaster full of ham and beans with the ham bones left over from the Christmas dinner there. I will also be making a pot of Texas Style Black Eyed Peas for luck in the new year. I got this recipe many years ago from a member here and at MM... Melia. We will take those back in to the American Legion about 5:00.

Then I hope to totally vegetate for a week!

I'll skip the goodies this morning, connie... we're heading in to our American Legion for a steak and Bloody Mary breakfast.

Good idea, Connie. I'm putting some whipping cream in my dark coffee right now! A nice, dark, double-espresso with whipping cream. Yum.

Happy New Years everyone; I was in bed by 10pm reading a book on my kindle last night, those that went out I hope you had a wonderful time.

Cold sunshine here today after several days of heavy rain, so probably a day for garden tasks.

A day off! I get a day off!

I do have to tell you about this little ceramic mug I'm have my morning coffee in. My son gave it to me because he doesn't drink coffee or tea and would never use it. You charge it on a ceramic base and then when you pour your coffee in it, it keeps the coffee at the exact temperature you have set it for in an app on your phone! You pair the mug to your phone with Bluetooth. The mug itself doesn't get hot. I checked at Amazon and these things sell for $128!!! HOLY SMOKES! I asked my son where the heck he got it and he said it was a vendor he had signed a multi-year contract with for several million bucks!

Lex, I have made some great coffee from my machine. It depends upon the beans as much as anything, though. The beans I loved on my stovetop espresso pot didn't work well in the Phillips, which needs a slightly darker bean. I've settled on several different Milano beans, all of which work very well.

Drac, no offense to you or your son or to anybody else but to your mug. You know my feelings about that type of stuff.

oldbroad, my son and I said the same thing to each other - Insane! You have to want your beverage the "correct" temperature pretty badly to be willing to spend $128 for it. I'm sure the tech vendor who gave it to my son thought it was the greatest thing ever. Jason took one look at it and said, "that's nuts."

I'm afraid my coffee doesn't stay in the mug very long in the morning...I need my caffeine too much to let it sit!

Sometimes I do have to get up and reheat my coffee or tea in the microwave but that's techie enough for me .

I must absolutely be the most boring coffee drinker on the planet 😱

Ground coffe along with boiling water - plus sometimes a drop of milk or a splodge of cream - and that’s me happy !! 👍

I'm with you, oldbroad! I do like that both cups of my morning coffee are hot, but I can also get up off my butt and put it in the microwave for 20 seconds if needed! I tend to drink the first cup fairly quickly and linger over the second one.

Drac, that mug does sound like a very neat bit of kit, but absurdly priced and perhaps in need of a a better looking design: anyway, I quite enjoy drinking cold coffee if I have left the mug standing too long and there is always the microwave for a quick zap.

My coffee doesn't last long enough in the mug to get cold. Honestly, I made my first coffee five minutes ago and I'm already staring at the leftover foam in the bottom of the cup. Espresso drinks are good, but they aren't very big volume-wise.

Very strange to have such warm weather... somehow it always seems to bring bad weather with it. 61° this morning.

On my second lingering cup in that goofy mug! I still laugh when I look at it and how ridiculous it really is! Guess it makes good corporate giveaways.

So, what IS the right temperature Drac? I wouldn't even know what to set it at.

Lex, I cannot drink cold coffee that didn't start out cold. The cheap warming coaster thing could be okay.

According to the app, it's 134°. It appears to be just right, so I just left it there. I usually drink my leftover coffee cold for lunch!

My microwave has paid for itself because of the times we heat our coffee in it instead of dumping it down the drain.

I like the cold dregs of a cappuccino; it brings out the chocolate flavours.

My coffee machine allows adjustment to make quite a long cappuccino and I then add a small shot of espresso to make it stronger, so there is a big enough cup to get cold... and any leftover foam is usually consumed with a spoon (hot or cold)!

For some reason my cats are going bonkers this morning. They've been chasing each other around the house for about 45 minutes, ever since I got up. Don't know what's got into the little beasties but it sure is entertaining. They talk to each other, too. So funny. Little life-enrichers.

Good morning everyone! Feels like forever since I've dropped in! I do read everyday and follow along though.
My darling husband went against our no-gift rule for the holidays and gave me Covid for Christmas. Thankfully, this one was swift and mild but took a week off work to be sure I didn't push myself and end up with Covid Pneumonia again like I did in January. I'm all good again!
Started my own company so it's been a rollercoaster. I've been working my company and my old job at the same time and just put in my resignation last night so I can stop juggling both. I need to focus on my best interests. It's going to be a great year!

Our garage door is being worked on as I write even though my brother did not get the insurance money yet. I know he is tired of dealing with this mess while the kid across the alley sits back doing nothing. First time in two weeks he was able to drive his car to go do his morning things. I know his knees and ankles appreciate it.

BrownEyedTiger, Starting your own company and answering to nobody else sounds like a grand plan! I'm glad the COVID wasn't too awful, but I'm sure it was miserable al the same.

I've got a few things to attend to around here; one of my two garage doors is damaged and I need to get that repaired. Then I have to start clearing out the 40 years' worth of accumulated "treasures" that travelled with us from house to house.

I'm starting to feel as though our small city isn't the place for me. It was wonderful when there were two us to take advantage of the outdoors, especially the boating, but there's very little to do otherwise and I find myself pining for the options a city provides. I'm thinking about moving down the coast a bit, towards Nanaimo. I'd be a lot closer to Victoria, where my sister lives, and I'd have quick access to the ferry to Vancouver. I'm not planning on leaving just yet; it's far too soon to be making such a big decision. Still, it's been on my mind a lot lately.

hagatha, you will know when the time is right. My sister waited a couple of years, but she had her sons and grandkids around to keep her busy. But she finally sold their big house and build a wonderful home.

We've had quite a storm again this week, with more wind than usual. My friend and I had also been venturing out for walks in the neighbourhood, but the weather for the last two days defeated us entirely.

We aren't walking alone around here right now as there has been a cougar roaming the neighbourhood for the last few weeks and it's not shy. Attempts to sedate and trap it haven't succeeded so far. We have a lot of deer in our area, so for the most part it's preying on them, but a couple of cats have also gone missing. I don't know why people let their cats roam here; between the occasional cougar and the Bald Eagles it's not really all that safe for them. We see the sad little notices all the time.

Hagatha this past summer and Fall we have had a bear roaming our neighborhood...walking right up to front doors and caught on cameras so we had to be careful when we walked. I never saw the bear, but my neighbor across the street took a video of it in her driveway in the early afternoon one day last summer! That is sad about the lost cats. There are so many night and daytime predators out there it is not safe for kitties to be let out. We never let ours go out.

Gerry, we also have a resident bear in our neighbourhood, a huge black bear that lumbers around eating from the plentiful berries we have every year. He never really bothers anyone. But we've had enough cougar sightings over the last few years that I've stopped walking my cat Willow. It's just too risky.

One. More. Christmas. Today. I'm kinda growly about it because I am so DONE with the holidays! Hubby has one of his famous hams in the oven and I'm just thawing out some of our sweet corn to take over. Step-daughter and her SO are here from Vifginia and yesterday she took over the kitchen and made15 coffee cakes to take along. Before she died, her mother used to make these coffee cakes for half the town every Christmas! So she picked up her mom's tradition for the family.

Good Monday Morning everyone! I was without internet service since yesterday afternoon. Called my internet service tech support this morning and after 45 minutes on the phone he was able to fix the trouble...to get us back online he did what he called "a hard modem reset" from the office. Hopefully we won't have any more issues.

We went from 63 degrees yesterday to 34 with rain and right now it's snowing huge flakes!

I'm kinda sheepish about this stupid electronic coffee mug. I forgot to charge it on its base night before last and I really missed it keeping my coffee perfectly hot! Sheesh...

I'm sort of liking the idea of the heated mug, not for coffee, but for my big cup of chai that I make later in the morning.

If I put my coffee down for several minutes to feed the cat - again! - I always forget that it's still perfectly hot. As long as you brew you tea and then pour it into the mug, it will keep it hot for 1 hour 45 minutes. It's interesting that in the app, there are different recommended temperatures for different kinds of tea.

I'll go for a nice macchiato with an extra shot of espresso this morning.

I'm tackling chores one or two at a time. Yesterday I replaced al the burnt-out light bulbs around here and cleaned out the pantry of all the things I don't eat, like baked beans and canned fruit. I'll take all that to the local Food Bank tomorrow. I'm also ditching the half-bottles of conditioner and shampoo that are cluttering up my bathrooms. It's amazing how much stuff gets accumulated when your aren't paying attention.

Now I need to find a junk removal service for the several hundred books I need to get rid of.

My sleep got so bad recently that I bought one of those SAD lamps for my desk. I'm curious to see if it works for me, but I'm cautiously saying that after 5 days I feel less sluggish.

I had to look up what a SAD lamp was, hagatha! I know at least two other people who use these lights and swear by them. Hope it helps you!

I really do feel different since I started using the lamp. There is scientific evidence to back up the idea that morning sunlight is critical, so it's not pie in the sky.

I've had bad insomnia all my life (probably because I have Hashimoto's Hypo-thyroiditis and it wasn't diagnosed until I was 39), but the very worst time was about ten years ago, when I was sleeping only about 1-3 hours a night. That went on until I went to Hawaii in mid-winter, and I would get up at 5 am and sit on the Lanai with a cup of tea. Within three days I was sleeping 7-8 hours a night and that went on for a good long time, almost a year, until John was diagnosed with cancer, at which point everything fell apart. So I do feel that morning light is effective; it's just that here in BC we have six months with no morning light.

Good afternoon everyone! Oh yes Gerry, hot dark brew for me and a danish from Connie hits the spot. Hagatha, would the local library want any of those books? My mom, would have loved one of those SAD lamps for sure as the winter months were so gray... Hey Ho and G'day Drac and TaintedFury. Have a wonderful Sunday everyone.

Soot, the local library wouldn't want them. I can take some of them to a local bookstore, which sells new and used, but she'll only take a box or two. The rest may have to go tp the dump. Sad, but true. I much prefer a physical book to an ebook on Kindle, but the waste of space and paper is enormous and I'll be giving up most of my books except for the favourite sci-fi and fantasy series, and the books that John wrote or co-wrote and a few books on local plants and birds.

I wonder if a good will store could sell them?
There's so much of the world to explore and discover in books...

Again, I can take a few of them to the local Hospice Thrift Store, but the Salvation army store won't take them, nor will the Hospital Thrift store. It's a horrible waste, but they have to go. I need to clear out my house and I have limited energy for searching out places that will take books.

I feel your pain. As much as I like my "pages," I've gone to digital books for this exact reason. Iy gives me great pain to throw away ANY book, but there is just nowhere to go with them. Hospitals, nursing homes, thrift stores, Salvation Army.. no one will take them. Hubby has gone to the library to eliminate his book backup.

It’s the same where I live here in the UK.
Nowhere will accept books these days. Certainly not charitable organisations of any kind.
And that’s a horrible shame 👎

Today is claw trimming day for Willow at the vet. She has the longest, thickest, sharpest claws I've ever seen on a cat, and for years we struggled to trim her nails, but she turns into a dangerous buzz-saw. Apparently she turns into Miss Meek and Mild at the veterinarian's office, so in she goes.

It's been raining for days here so no walks for me. Time to get back on my stationary bike.

I was interested to see what was being said about disposing of old books: similar problems here, but there are a number of disused phone boxes which have turned into unofficial free local libraries, and the local amenity centre (refuse tip, but known locally as Harrods after the famous department store) has an indoor section for discarded but still serviceable items including books. The result is that quite a number of people attend to get items rather than throw them away, and on one occasion I had people queuing to receive my cast-offs as I unloaded the car!

Good Morning everyone. Interesting Lex...we also have a "reusable" area in our Transfer Station where you can leave books and other items for free. Hagatha I was lucky all my cats over the years let me clip their claws except Sweet Potato...she would only let me do one at a time so it would take forever to do them all!

It's a typical January day here; gloomy, howling wind, and very wet. It's a good day to do some cleanout chores and play Witcher 3.

Sounds like a plan hagatha...our weather is gloomy too. I've never played Witcher ...is it an adventure game?

Gerry, The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt is a huge RPG game with tons of monsters and bad guys to kill!

And an addictive card game to play when you're tired of killing monsters and bad guys.

I'm still getting used to Gwent! But I do like it a lot.

I was very good at Gwent after my first game of Witcher 3, but my skills are decidedly rusty. My favourite games are the ones where I have a hand full of decoys and spies. Those games can go on forever.

We've got a serious windstorm happening here, with my stove vent flapping and the furniture moving around on the deck. I keep forgetting to bring it in. I'm betting we lose our power just about now-ish. The upstairs bedroom, which has exterior walls on three sides, feels like it's about to blow away. It's also very cold. I hope it doesn't snow. I have a long drive on Friday.

Connie, I'm glad you liked the concert. I haven't been to one in many, many years. I was just trying to remember who I would last have seen, and when, and I think it was Loreena McKennit, and that would have been thirty-odd years ago, in Vancouver.

Just a cold, rainy, dreary day here. A good day for some Witcher gaming here too! At least we don't have any wind like you do, hagatha. My 100+ year old farmhouse is on one of the highest points in this county and when the wind is ripping, it sounds like the old house is going to blow off the hill - especially upstairs!

Coffee - kept at it's proper temperature! - then Wordle and then getting our new webmaster access to the American Legion website at 10. I've been running our website for 12 years and am going to be SO happy to hand it off to someone much more capable than I am.

That heated mug is sounding better all the time.

We're in a wind tunnel here. It can get pretty fierce sometimes.

Good morning, all. It's still January, so it goes without saying that it's gloomy and chilly -- a good morning for a nice fire and a strong cup of macchiato.

My bird feeder is covered with bright red Cardinals this morning. Later it will be the smaller Chickadees and finches. You can always tell when their natural foods are really hard to find. Another coldish, windy day here. At least the rain is gone for now.

Taintedfury, my very good friend Phil just returned from Tanzania where he is from originally. He said it was quite a shock to his system to come back to this weather!

We've moved from dark, dreary and wet to bright and cold. My friend and I have been walking almost daily, except in the worst of storms, but today will be a nice change from the wet and we can choose a longer walk to take advantage of the sun.

Hi everyone; we are in the middle of a January thaw, going to need a lot of windshield washer fluid, it's really slushy out there, but I won't complain about the warmer weather.

judith, I couldn't live through your winters. Toronto was pretty awful in the winter, it's true, but I've been living in BC for so long I'm spoiled. It's dark and dreary but rarely very cold.

We are just emerging from a second “deep freeze” here in the UK - in my area, anyway.
And in-between the two we had ferocious wind and rain storms !!
Hoping for something a bit nicer for a while now 🤞🤞🤞

I'm off to get my eyes checked. It's the drops this morning, so I'll have to do a lot of sitting around for a few hours. I've been noticing that my glasses are just wrong at any distance and on long drives it can become a real problem. One of these days I'll have that surgery that replaces the lens completely so you don't have to wear glasses.

I had lens replacement surgery a few years ago and it was excellent, but I think that many people still need glasses, at least for reading: the varifocal replacement lenses seem to only have limited scope for some people despite the hype about no longer needing glasses. I was always extremely short sighted, but that was useful for such things as removing splinters and threading needles: I therefore opted to go for lenses which are good for reading and close work, also balancing the eyes (as one was much worse than the other), but I still need glasses for distance and have a different pair for using the computer.

In any event hagatha, I hope the eye test does not produce any unpleasant surprises!

Otherwise, I hope that everyone's week is getting off to a good start.

Any news about family yet?

The eye test went well -- apparently my eyes are getting better, not worse. I selected two pairs of awesome Gucci frames. I figure since I wear them all the time, they are an important fashion accessory and so I spare no expense.

It is odd that family has dropped off the forum so completely. Has anyone tried to PM her?

I didn't PM her as it seems she hasn't visited the forums for some time. However, I did send an email to the address she has listed in her profile yesterday. I am quite worried as this is completely out of character for her.

Making a brief grocery store run today to get a couple of things in anticipation of quite a lot of snow tonight and into tomorrow. I doubt it will stay around long, but they don't plow the country roads very quickly, so it may be a few days before I get out. My wine supply is getting low!

Apparently an unseasonable cold front is headed our way. I have a couple of errands to run and some boxes of things to drop off at the Thrift Store, and then I think I'll sit in front of the fire and watch TV.

Just cold and sunny today. Could do my floors or dust... nah. I order garden seeds for hubby the other day, so maybe I'll start perusing my tomato seeds for this spring. I grow my own and will start them about the 2nd week in March. I start my pepper seeds in February because some of those take at least 2 or 3 weeks to just germinate.

The Farmer's Almanac says we are supposed to have a long cold spring.

Just hot black coffee for me this morning. Hagatha, I really think you need to get one of these Ember cups! As useless as I thought it was, I really like it!

Okay. You talked me into it! I got a rose-gold coloured 14 ounce cup.

Something tells me you will love it, hagatha! As ridiculous as the whole concept is - I can just get up off my lazy butt and put my cup in the microwave for 30 seconds! - I have grown to love my coffee being the perfect temp all morning!

I can see it being perfect for my Chai. The cappuccinos go down far too fast for this to be helpful, but a nice, big cup of spicy Chai; now that can be savoured.

Exactly. My first cup of coffee goes down fast, but I like to linger and savour my second cup. The app suggested different temps for different teas... don't know if it's correct, but I'm following it!!

Gerry, I'll have double dark coffee and danish as Connie won't be back till tomorrow. You definitely have to get a coffee warmer, works great with either coffee or tea if you like to take your time finishing the cup. We have the old fashioned kind you plug in and set your cup on...a little cup 'hot plate.' That Ember Cup looks really neat!

I guess we got a couple of inches of snow here. Hard to tell from my window.

I'm not sure. Something kept them here overwinter -- perhaps the young one wasn't strong enough to travel? Who knows? Anyway, there's bound to be lots of food for them here, so I'm sure they're okay.

"Bad weather" further South would be a good estimate for the whales as the Pacific has been rolling in waves of storms to our West coast these past weeks ... and I imagine warmer waters has had an effect too.

My Ember mug has arrived. I'll be giving it a test tomorrow morning.

I will be curious to hear what you think of it! Just don't forget that it will always be hot! I've gotten up to wrangle cats or something and come back 10 minutes later and forgotten!

Good morning, Danish, Donuts and Bagels in the Break Room. Family, I'm happy to see you back, and that you are feeling better. We had a Wonderful time at Mid-Winter. We learned a lot, and made many new friends from all over. Joint meeting at the Eagles tonight, we will share what we learned at the conference.

Ice, ice, baby! We got lots of freezing rain and sleet yesterday and last night and the roads are treacherous. Cars in the ditch everywhere - everyone I know is safe. My son and his wife both work from home and my DIL finally made it in to her job with UPS about 1 am. She said she's not leaving until the roads are better!

Me? I'm not going anywhere except out to the barn to chisel the ice off the barn door latch! It's a battle to keep unfrozen water for my 17 year old barn cat in the hayloft. We have a bucket with a heater in it downstairs, but it's getting harder for her to get up and down. I go out twice a day and swap out the frozen water for fresh water.

Your barn cat needs a heated water bowl. You can get them on Amazon...

They require electricity - which is not available in the hayloft except for overhead lights about 15' up in the rafters! We have the bucket with a heater downstairs, but I like to try to keep water upstairs for her.

Good morning, Danish, Donuts and Bagels in the Break Room. Routine appointment with my Oncologist this morning.

Connie, I hope the oncologist appointment is trouble-free.

Very cold and clear this morning. I'm having a double cappuccino that is still very hot in spite of the chilly air in here. The mug works nicely, Draclvr. I haven't worked out all of the electronic stuff, but the mug itself works like a charm on the basic setting. I've ordered a second one for guests.

Glad to hear it, hagatha! We turn down the heat to 64°F at night, so in the morning my coffee cups are COLD! I always used to heat them up with running hot water before I poured my coffee. Now I don't have to.

Got down to 12°F last night, so I'll be heading out to the barn shortly to get fresh water in the hayloft. No heated waterer up there, hagatha! No electricity... Then I'm taking my other elderly cat in to drop off at the vet. She is hyperthyroid and on meds, but now she has a UTI. The roads were SUPER icy yesterday and school was called off again because of icy secondary roads in the country. I'll just go slow!

I turn down the heat at night to 65 degrees. I pretty much HAVE to, since the heat pump would be too loud once it starts its de-ice cycle.

My last cat was hyperthyroid and got frequent UTI's the older she got.

Her kidney function is still just a hair out of the normal range. But usually, that starts getting worse too. She is 16 1/2, so it all is expected. On the other hand, than black barn cat is at least 17 with nary a health issue! Hasn't been seen by a vet since she got spayed at 6 months. Only the last couple of years she has allowed me to touch her.

I'm off to Home Depot to look for backsplash tile for my kitchen. That's about as exciting as it gets around here.

I'm starting my first day without Pita the cat. We made the decision for euthanasia yesterday. She has been hyperthyroid for a few years that was relatively under control with meds. But she started losing even more weight and finally had blood in her urine so I took her to the vet. Bloodwork showed she was in severe liver failure and that seizures were probably imminent. She was so very frail we just couldn't put her through that. I held her while they gave the sedative and the silly cat started purring... of course, I was bawling like a baby. Pita was 16 1/2 and lived a good long life with us. Someone threw her out of a vehicle when she was about 5 weeks old and she made it up to our barn. RIP, dear Pita. And yes, you were a pain in the arse, but we loved you!

I am so sorry to hear this about Pita, Drac! I remember you talking about her in the past and me asking about the name.

I'm so sorry to hear about Pita, losing a pet is one of the hardest thing to go through.

So sorry to hear about Pita, it's so sad to lose a pet, I sometimes wonder if it is worth having pets, because the pain we feel is so bad when they have to leave us....but of course it is.

I am so sorry to hear about your furbaby, Drac. Pita had a good and long life thanks to you, though, and hopefully there is comfort in that thought.

Draclvr, So sorry to hear about Pita, it's so sad to lose a pet, I know the feeling about losing a pet and it is hard to take, I hope you the best and take care.

Thank you for the thoughts, everyone. The last thing I said when I left the room was, "It's the price we pay for having pets." I feel a bit lost not having to wrangle cats for a couple of hours every day! I had to keep the other two away while she ate, especially when I was getting her meds in her. I keep feeling like she is going to come around the corner and sit there looking at me until I get up and get her another spoonful of food! This is going to take awhile.

The death toll from those earthquakes keeps rising. What a catastrophe.

As hagatha says, the scale of the terrible situation in Turkey and Syria continues to grow: the only good news there is some sign of good international collaboration in the rescue effort perhaps helping overcome some old enmities at least temporarily.

On a lighter note, this one may already be familiar to some of you, but only came to us recently:

REAL ESTATE IN LOUISIANA...
Rebuilding New Orleans after Katrina often caused residents to be challenged to prove home titles back hundreds of years. That is because of community history stretching back over two centuries during which houses were passed along through generations of family, sometimes making it quite difficult to establish a paper trail of ownership.

A New Orleans lawyer sought a FHA rebuilding loan for a client. He was told the loan would be granted upon submission of satisfactory proof of ownership of the parcel of property as it was being offered as collateral. It took the lawyer 3 months, but he was able to prove title to the property dating back to 1803. After sending the information to the FHA, he received the following reply.

"Upon review of your letter adjoining your client's loan application, we note that the request is supported by an Abstract of Title. While we compliment the able manner in which you have prepared and presented the application, we must point out that you have only cleared title to the proposed collateral property back to 1803. Before final approval can be accorded, it will be necessary to clear the title back to its origin."



And here is the letter the lawyer responded with:

"Your letter regarding title in Case No.189156 has been received. I note that you wish to have proof of title extended further than the 206 years already covered in the present application. I was unaware that any educated person in this country, particularly those working with real property, would not know that Louisiana was purchased by the United States from France in 1803, the year of origin of title identified in our application. For the edification of uninformed FHA bureaucrats, the title to the land prior to U.S. ownership was obtained from France, which had acquired it by Right of Conquest from Spain. I'm enjoying my very hot triple-shot Macchiato, looking out the window at what promises to be a lovely day.

I had a nice ride on my bike, this time in Palm Springs. Tomorrow, I'll see what other new rides have been posted. I notice that my favourite ride has been removed from the site; it was an oceanfront ride in Dubai at sunset, and absolutely lovely. I hope it goes back into the rotation at some point. In the meantime I can ride my other faves. There's one in Bucharest that is really great, all along the waterfront.

Once I've finished with my coffee and my ride this morning I'm going to start packing up my books and CD's and papers just in case I decide to move and the opportunity arises. I'm also going to donate all of the kitchen stuff, small appliances and glassware, etc, that I don't use.

It's a big job but I can get it done if I just push away at it for a couple of hours a day for a week.

That sounds like a very sensible plan, hagatha. So Good Luck !! 👍👍👍

It's 40 years of cumulative "stuff." A lot of that stuff has been carted around for all these years without ever even being used.

I've been taking 2-3 boxes and bags of clothing and boxes of tchotchkes and books and other stuff like small appliances to the local Hospice Thrift shop for weeks now and I've barely made a dent. I'm surprised at some of the things I'm finding tucked away -- my John was a pack rat, especially when it came to papers. But I have located all of his stuffed animals, which are all now about 70 years old. Those are keepers, of course.

Up until the house I currently have, I had moved 22 times, and with the constant buying and selling of properties and the organising of new schools etc etc for the children and the dealing with the requirements of pets, I very quickly learned not to accumulate unnecessary “stuff” because my Husband had usually already gone ahead weeks, sometimes months, beforehand and so I had to manage everything myself …. and two of the moves were across the water to Ireland …. and later back again

Sad to say I have now accumulated a LOT of “stuff” but hopefully, I won’t ever be moving again 🙄🙄🙄

I have only lived in two houses my whole life, and I left just some stuff behind when moving here, but I seem to miss it at times. I often look around now and wonder how I will ever possibly down size and get rid of stuff if I have to. I might have a lot of junk but I like all of it.

That is a lot of moving, Mad! I am close to have moved about fifteen times, and it definitely gets you into the mode of getting rid of unnecessary stuff - that is for sure.

I also understand about your "liking" the junk, ob. All the moving I did, though, forced me to harden my heart to a lot of it.

Yes, that's exactly it. I have to harden my heart. It's things like the carved Grizzly bear that John bought and loved. I never liked it. It's going into the donation box, along with the big carved elephant and the ceramic ducks and the little carved boxes that we have everywhere that are really just junk cleverly disguised as treasures.

"Junk cleverly disguised as treasures." LOL

After my second husband passed, it took me a good 3 years to finally be able to "harden my heart" to so much of his cleverly disguised treasures! I still run across something now and then 25 years later!

I've spent the last 5 years doing some updates on this old farmhouse. I'm no housekeeper of the year, but I really don't like clutter, so I'm slowly but surely getting rid of a great deal of it. Just don't look at my computer desk right now!

I really want to move, now. It's time. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of looking at properties for sale on line, and I found my dream home, just barely within my target price range but doable. It'll be sold be the time I'm ready to start looking. Too bad!

Hagatha, that just means you dream home is out there AND in your time line! Keep looking!

Soot, I'm moving farther south on Vancouver Island, closer to Nanaimo. There's really nothing for me to do here now that John is gone.

Where I live, Campbell River, is a small city, formerly a resource town and one-time salmon mecca to the stars, and now more and more a retirement haven, but because the City Council is completely hidebound, they've never even tried to develop the kind of services and sophistication that would make it truly attractive for city people to come here to live. Visit, yes, go fishing, yes, take an eco-tour, yes, but live here? No.

Essentially, it' a small town that lacks any small town charm.

Loving some of those tales of shedding clutter for a house move: been there and done that although not recently, and my wife calls the very cluttered garage my treasure box (but no longer mocks it quite as much as some of the "treasure" has proved very useful!).

Of course one great thing now is how easy it is to photograph or video mementos for storage on computer before casting off the actual items...

I'm off to Home Depot later this morning to pay for my tile backsplash project and choose the grout; we had the backsplash tiled four years ago but the job was so sloppy it has to be re-done. It'll look much nicer anyway, since I chose a much lighter tile this time.

My friend and I are going to try a new restaurant here in town. It gets rave reviews, but in this town even the McDonald's and KFC get four and five stars, so it's a pretty low bar.

LOL! I did that ONE time and have never forgotten again! As much fun as I made of this ridiculous mug, I would have a hard time going back to the rapidly cooling second cup of coffee!

I bought a second one for guests, and another one as a thank-you gift for one of my friends. She's already addicted!

Me too, Space Q. I'm taking a break with a cold frosty adult beverage! Pretty much have it all, but struggling with just how to enter my rental income from the 80 acres of Iowa farmland I inherited when my mom passed away. Need a Schedule which I don't have! Hope I don't have to enter it strictly as income. We also had two distributions from 529 College Accounts this year. Might need more than one of those beverages!

Ugh. Taxes.

This year won't be too bad, but last year was terrible; John was in the hospital just when the taxes were almost due and I had no idea where he put all the paperwork. Fortunately we've used the same tax accountant for years and years, so he filled it out for me.

This year I'm much better prepared, but next year will be interesting as I will have to pay capital gains tax on a property I sold this year.

I remember the stress you had last year with John in the hospital and not being able to access a lot of tax into on top of everything else. Taxes are never fun, but that was awful for you.

So nice to see you all even though I just pop in from time to time. Still the best community on the planet.

Yes, that was truly a low point in my life.

I'm busy getting rid of everything in my house that I don't need, and donating it to my favourite thrift store. Three-quarters of the contents of my kitchen is stuff I'll never need again and probably never needed in the first place. How many springform cheesecake pans did I need? Or bread pans? Mugs? Casserole dishes? Anyway, the kitchen is now at the point where when I do eventually move, everything that is left in the kitchen will be donated as soon as I get to the other end. Love those empty cupboards!

I just lugged two huge bags of extra bedding and still-useable towels out to the car for the Monday run.

Excellent progress, hagatha! It's very freeing to look at previously cluttered spaces and seeing some sense of order!

There are some things I will never get rid of in my kitchen... such as all my cast iron skillets, pans and griddles! I actually use them all the time. I think I have at least 9 pieces!

Sent in my Federal Income taxes last week...will start our State Income Taxes today. Got our house and auto Insurances renewed for another year...premium keeps going up. Everything seems to come due for review or renewal at the same time and taxes too.

Grocery run this morning...hubby will be watching the Daytona 500 today while I organize State taxes.

I'm waiting to get one more W2 so I can do my grandson's taxes. Homeowners and Auto insurance due next month, yes they went up. It seems like everyone got rate increases, lights, gas, cable, water. My coffee roaster of choice, Milano, sent me the wrong parcel for my last order so now I have a couple of new coffees to try. Vey nice in my espresso machine! And as an added bonus, they're sending me my original order at no extra cost, so I'm well stocked-up with excellent beans.


I guess family must be very ill since she only came here the one time. I hope she's doing okay.

Taxes done, e-filed and already accepted by both the Feds and the State! It's always nerve wracking for me because we have a family farm LLC that gets a different K1 forms and schedules and this year we took out quite a lot of money from the 529 education accounts for two of the granddaughters. Plus I get farm land rent from brother in Iowa. But we get refunds from both, so I'm breathing a sign of relief!

Today is planting my pepper seeds. Some of them take a good month to even germinate, so I start them in February. The tomatoes will be started in March.

Coffee and my daily Wordle to start the day!

Good morning y'all. Sounds like it's going to be a good day. We were supposed to have snow this a.m. so I cancelled my appt to go over my taxes till next week and sure enough it warmed up and doesn't look like the snow will show up for two or three more days. If it shows up I'll be out there with the snow shovel so we can get the gate open. I like the snow until it packs down and turns into a brick. The goats don't like it at all. It's been a mixed bag of weather out there lately, but we are definitely trending towards warmer.

I'm still packing and sorting. Today is another day of dropping things off at Thrift stores. The next chore is packing up books and CDs and DVDs which I might keep until after I move simply because there are more places to donate used books in a larger city.

My cats have clearly had a falling out because they've stopped playing together and he gives her the stink-eye when he walks by. Willow must have jumped on him again; she's twice his size, and an annoying little jerk sometimes. She also kisses my nose on command, so it's hard to stay cross at her. But I was enjoying their antics, so hopefully the rift will heal and they'll be friends again soon.

We are getting about 16 inches of snow over the next week, with five inches already. Our internet connection works only intermittently, so I will be here when I can. It is so cold, but not as cold as Alberta!

74 degrees for our high today and the high tomorrow is only supposed to be 39 degrees.

I managed to waste the entire day today. Somehow it just slipped away without a single thing getting done.

Tomorrow I have to get back to my donation box-packing and delivering. I dug out my 35-year-old Kitchen Aid mixer. I haven't even looked at it for 15 years, so I guess it's off to the Thrift store tomorrow. It still works perfectly and I have the attachments for it, so somebody will get a good deal.

It stopped for a while, but it's started again. It's now horrible wet snow, which will turn to Ice. My neighbour has a truck and she'll drive me in, since the snow now weighs tons and there's no way I can plow the whole driveway.

I cannot help suspecting that hagatha may make the hazardous journey for that important meeting while the lawyer uses the weather as an excuse to stay at home...

The roads will be cleared downtown, and there have been many trucks go by on our street so there are tracks to drive in. My driveway is the only problem. It's a very long driveway. As soon as it's light I have to start shovelling. There is more snow forecast but at least if I can get the driveway cleared, it won't keep getting deeper and deeper.

I can still get a ride if I have to.

But this is another reason to move; it's impossible to hire someone to plow here, because the need is only once or twice a year and it's not worth anyone's time for contracts that small. As I get older clearing that driveway will be more and more difficult.

I wondered how the snow was going, hagatha... yuck to more of it. Wind is blowing so hard here it's feeling like my old farmhouse is going to fly off the top of this hill! At least it's not terribly cold.

Hi everyone, I'll drink whatever is available ... that includes lots of instant coffee when I'm busy at work, have a wonderful afternoon and evening.

I used to enjoy instant coffee but haven't had it for a long time. I have 3 jars in my cabinet though, 2 of which are open. Does it go bad?

I imagine it eventually loses taste and aroma the longer it goes past its 'best by' date but it is freeze dried

Hubby and I are starting to watch for our "owl" friends that have been nesting in a hole in a maple tree right outside our living room windows. They have been coming for the last 3 years and we have watched the babies grow and learn to fly. Got some pictures of the little ones and the parent owls too.

That must be a joy to see.

I fear that our already-nesting hummingbirds were wiped out by the recent cold snap because there was almost nobody feeding them. I haven't seen one for a week.

It is a joy indeed to watch hagatha. They are amazing creatures. Father owl sits in a tree near by guarding and hunting for food while Mother owl sits in the nest in the hollow of the tree. We have actually seen him sit on the edge of the hole and drop a fresh kill in! When the babies are big enough they slowly come up and look out the hole...its like watching a puppet show the way they slowly appear and look around with those big eyes!

Strong dark brew, Earl Grey tea and dark hot chocolate are ready.

Had a lovely start to my morning! Had a minor disaster on the way to bowling last night. I hit something large and metal on the highway just in town and had to park my poor truck at the Casey's gas station overnight! Whatever it was slashed my right rear tire and I had to have it towed this morning. When I was telling the clerk at Casey's I had to leave my truck a woman came in and said she had hit it too. She pulled in to see if she had any damage because it sounded like it tore her car apart! While we were waiting for the tow this morning, we saw them put up a barricade and lights and move the piece to the side of the highway. We looked at it on the way home and it was about 2 - 3 feet across and crumpled metal. It appears that several other cars hit it. Told my friend Kim who picked me up for bowling I didn't have to worry about someone breaking in overnight and trying to steal it.... no one today can drive a stick shift!

Had it towed to my tire place and by the time we got there, he had already ordered a new tire and it will be ready by 5:00 today. I MIGHT have 500 miles on these tires and they have road hazard coverage, so it won't cost me anything!

Was supposed to do a tour down at the horse rescue this morning, so I had to cancel that. I know they are short handed this weekend, so I hope they found someone to conduct the tour!

That sounded SO dangerous, Draclvr !! Glad you weren’t hurt 🌺

Stick shifts are widespread here in the UK.
In fact in my 57 years (so far) of driving, and of all the vehicles I’ve ever owned, none have been auto gears - although I’ve driven plenty of auto geared that weren’t mine 😑😑

Mad, you can't even GET a manual transmission on most passenger vehicles here any more. This is a 2004 truck purchased new by my step-daughter and she had to special order the 5-speed manual transmission. The tow truck driver said they call a stick shift the "Millennial Anti-Theft Device!"

Sure... they break into the car and can't steal it because they don't know how to drive it! It actually happened here a year or so ago. A bunch of idiots broke into a delivery truck and tried to drive it away, but had to leave it because none of them knew how to drive a stick shift!

My girl is safely parked in the garage this morning! I had them put my truck up on a rack to check for any damage underneath and it seems to have knocked loose a bracket for my muffler, so I will need to get that fixed. We looked more carefully at the piece and I still don't know what it is! It looks like a 3 foot piece of crumpled fabric, but it's metal! As loud and awful as it sounded, I'm grateful nothing else was damaged.

Made hubby his biscuits and gravy breakfast this morning and now it's... ahhhhh... black coffee for me!

I only miss manual transmission (stick shift) in bad waether: it is so much better for dealing with snow and mud, even without all wheel drive, supplemented by removable floor mats to provide extra traction if you get stuck!

I hadn't thought about it as a theft deterrent

I learned on a stick shift when I was 16 but haven't driven anything but automatic in the last 35 years.

Good morning, Danish, Donuts and Bagels in the Break Room. District meeting in Clermont today.

Hubby and grandson have been conspiring and they got 25 little baby chicks yesterday. Since it's quite cold here, they had to set up this raised cage that step-son built many years ago with heat lamps and blankets over the top and sides. So far, they are doing quite nicely. Grandson even got some that lay blue eggs!

I had put a pork shoulder roast in the crock pot and it all smelled so good that Grandson left to get a bottle of wine and came back to stay for dinner. We watched a really funny movie and he left about 8:30 to go to a local bar in town. He is 24 and we NEVER get to see him, so we had a really nice day with him!

Sunny and cold today. A good friend has her 70th birthday on St. Patrick's Day, so we have put together a float for the parade in our little town tonight. I imagine there will be a green beer or two consumed afterwards! Have a wonderful St. Patrick's Day, everyone!

I wore my green boots to celebrate (they're nicer than they sound).

It was quite cold and windy for the parade, but for the most part the sun stayed out. It was only about 10 blocks of walking and passing out candy to all the little kids on the sidewalks and turned out the be quite fun! I was very glad to get into the warm bar and sit down with a cold beer with hubby though! This little historic bar was packed to the gills and VERY loud and noisy, so we left with some friends and went down to the MUCH quieter American Legion Post. Stayed out much later than normal for us - anything past 8:00 pm!

Making my corned beef and cabbage tomorrow.

I've been tackling the garage lately -- getting rid of all the stuff that we've accumulated over the years. I must have taken 15 boxes of extra household stuff to the Salvation Army thrift store, and at least 10 small boxes of leftover electronics and spare TV cables and assorted wires of various types for the recycling depot. It feels like it will never end, but I know I've made a huge dent.

I found something rather touching today, and I wish was all worth keeping, but alas most of it it is not. About 38 years ago, John bought me a fly-tying kit; for those of you who don't know what that is, it is a kit for making feather and fur lures for fishing, especially for fly fishing for trout, which we used to do way back then. I used it extensively for about 5 years and we caught a lot of fish on my lures. I invested quite heavily in buying materials for my flies too. It never occurred to me that John kept it for all these years. I was looking for things to donate today and I found an unfamiliar tool box at the back of a shelf. In it was a little metal case full of the flies and underneath was all of my old fly-tying material; threads, and fur and feathers and Mylar and so on. Unfortunately the moths had gotten in there at some point and it was all destroyed and not worth keeping, but I am going to keep the little metal case full of my old flies that I made 35 years ago.

Ah, that made me get a little tear, hagatha. What a wonderful find... For many years, I would find some small item that would bring back memories of my second husband. They were such treasures! It's been 25 years now and I don't find them any more. Bittersweet for you too, I'm sure!

Good Morning hagatha, Draclvr and everyone. Hagatha that little metal box will will keep those wonderful memories of John close to your heart. Draclvr those fond memories of your 2nd husband will always be there when you hear stories like hagatha's.

MANAGEMENT LESSONS
Lesson 1
. A man is getting into the shower just as his wife is finishing up her shower, when the doorbell rings.
The wife quickly wraps herself in a towel and runs downstairs.
When she opens the door, there stands Bob, the next-door neighbour.
Before she says a word, Bob says, 'I'll give you $800 to drop that towel.'
After thinking for a moment, the woman drops her towel and stands naked in front of Bob, after a few seconds, Bob hands her $800 and leaves.
The woman wraps back up in the towel and goes back upstairs.
When she gets to the bathroom, her husband asks, 'Who was that?'
'It was Bob the next door neighbour,' she replies.
'Great,' the husband says, 'did he say anything about the $800 he owes me?'
 
 
Moral of the story
If you share critical information pertaining to credit and risk with your shareholders in time, you may be in a position to prevent avoidable exposure.
 
 
 


Lesson 2
. A priest offered a Nun a lift.
She got in and crossed her legs, forcing her gown to reveal a leg.
The priest nearly had an accident.
After controlling the car, he stealthily slid his hand up her leg.
The nun said, 'Father, remember Psalm 129?'
The priest removed his hand. But, changing gears, he let his hand slide up her leg again.
The nun once again said, 'Father, remember Psalm 129?'
The priest apologized 'Sorry sister but the flesh is weak.'
Arriving at the convent, the nun sighed heavily and went on her way.
On his arrival at the church, the priest rushed to look up Psalm 129. It said, 'Go forth and seek, further up, you will find glory.'


Moral of the story
If you are not well informed in your job, you might miss a great opportunity.
 
 
 


Lesson 3
. A sales rep, an administration clerk, and the manager are walking to lunch when they find an antique oil lamp.
They rub it and a Genie comes out.
The Genie says, 'I'll give each of you just o wish.'
'Me first! Me first!' says the admin clerk. 'I want to be in the Bahamas , driving a speedboat, without a care in the world.'
Puff! She's gone.
'Me next! Me next!' says the sales rep. 'I want to be in Hawaii , relaxing on the beach with my personal masseuse, an endless supply of Pina Coladas and the love of my life.'
Puff! He's gone.
'OK, you're up,' the Genie says to the manager.
The manager says, 'I want those two back in the office after lunch.'

Moral of the story
Always let your boss have the first say.
 


Lesson 4. 
An eagle was sitting on a tree resting, doing nothing.
A small rabbit saw the eagle and asked him, 'Can I also sit like you and do nothing?'
The eagle answered: 'Sure, why not.'
So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the eagle and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.


Moral of the story
To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up.
 


 


Lesson 5. 
A turkey was chatting with a bull.
'I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree' sighed the turkey, 'but I haven't got the energy.'
'Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?' replied the bull. They're packed with nutrients.'
The turkey pecked at a lump of dung, and found it actually gave him enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree.
The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch.
Finally after a fourth night, the turkey was proudly perched at the top of the tree.
He was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot him out of the tree.


Moral of the story:
Bull Shit might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there..
 




Lesson 6. 
A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold the bird froze and fell to the ground into a large field.
While he was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on him.
As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, he began to realize how warm he was.
The dung was actually thawing him out!
 He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy.
A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate.
 
Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him.




Morals of the story
(1) Not everyone who shits on you is your enemy.

(2) Not everyone who gets you out of shit is your
 friend
(3) When you're in deep shit, it's best to keep
 your mouth shut!

A good friend had her three cats who are siblings start not getting along and being mean to each other. She never knew what happened either, but after awhile, they all started getting along again.

I'm still adjusting to not having Pita to take care of all day long. The other two have just started exploding with shedding cat hair! My house has "tumbleweeds" of it everywhere! I have to empty my little vacuum cleaner bin often!

Got my tomato seeds started and my pepper plants under the grow lights in the basement. I swear every single one of my Chichimeca pepper seeds germinated! I must have at least 60 of them! They are a wonderful huge pepper perfect for making jalapeno poppers, but good grief! What am I doing to do with all of these! I will try to give away as many as I can.

Had a terrible scare yesterday. When they started reporting on the school shooting in Denver, as soon as I saw the pictures on TV of the school I knew it was my son's school. I was able to talk to him later in the day and he and a bunch of his teacher friends were drinking at his house. They were all furious and frustrated. The kid was expelled from a school in Florida in January for bringing guns to campus and was getting patted down every morning. To make things worse there was an assembly that morning and there were at least 1,000 kids in the auditorium. I was horrified that two faculty members were conducting these pat downs. My son said they got rid of the two armed Resource Officers a couple of years ago despite the faculty begging them to bring them back. He had just attended the funeral of a 16 year old student on Saturday who was murdered in front of the school. They just don't feel safe there at all.

Hope to talk to him more today - he had to hang up because he had press at the door and had to tell them to go away.

I read a little of that story yesterday Drac, and thought "how ridiculous to have to pat a student down everyday", a very unsafe feeling for all.

And a lot of good it did, when those directed to pat him down were faculty. If you're looking for a gun, shouldn't you have a professional doing it? Even worse, my son said none of the rest of the faculty was made aware of this situation. I certainly hope some heads will roll over this.

What a cold dreary day ahead! It rained last night with thunder and lightning. Bella the Bloodhound usually refuses to come inside to sleep, but last night she definitely wanted to be inside - she hates thunder!

A worrying time for you Drac, and an ongoing issue: sadly, such incidents have become so commonplace in USA that it did not even make the news in UK (unless it was well hidden in one of the newspapers).

My cats seem to have calmed down. I've noticed that Willow is back to chasing Dude all the time, and generally being a jerk, not letting him come in through the cat flap and sneaking up behind him to sniff the end of his tail, which he hates. However, although he looks like an innocent little puffball, he retaliates by waiting until she stops eating and then stealing her remaining food. She then retaliates by using his litter box. And on it goes. On the other hand, they were both crashed out in front of the fire yesterday. There's never been a fight, thankfully. I might have to start using the Feliway diffusers again. They did seem to help.

Good ones, Lex! I wish the paint thinner one would work!

I'm heading down to the horse rescue shortly to work our first Wagon Days. I'll be conducting wagon rides to the back of the 165 acre property and tours of the barns and paddocks. It's quite chilly out and I think we got over 4" of rain last night and the day before! So it will be a muddy and not very pleasant day!

Taintedfury hope you have a great day too. Lex thedre are some really funny ones...made me laugh out loud! Enjoy your dinner out Connie. Looks like a nice sunny day is in the works! I'm going to have a nice relaxing day and do some gaming in The Witcher.

The sun finally come out yesterday while I was working the Wagon Days at the horse rescue, so the last couple of hours were much more pleasant that the first two hours! However, my rear end is sore this morning from sitting on the wooden benches of the wagon. We had at least 150 people show up and how many volunteers were there? One! Me! No one was even there to drive the truck, so one of the employees had to do it. Luckily one other volunteer was there who does the Twister the Horse painting demonstrations, so she took a couple of rides for me or my voice wouldn't have made it!

Too tired to cook, so ordered a couple of pizzas from town.

Good morning, Danish, Donuts and Bagels in the Break Room. Lunch and Netflix with a friend today. Bowling with friends at the Eagles tonight. Have a Lovely day everyone.

I'm having the drab tile backsplash in my kitchen replaced with clear glass subway tiles. What a difference! Brightens up the place so much. Next is the upstairs deck rebuild. This place will look better than it ever has when I'm done. I'm still plowing my through all the papers and books and finding whole file cabinet drawers full of papers that have been irrelevant for decades. There's so much of it I think I'll take it to Staples to be shredded. My little shredder can't keep up!

Hagatha, my husband is a certifiable hoarder. If I didn't keep up with the papers, we would have drowned in them. Can you imagine having an entire box of cancelled checks from the 1970's and considering them absolute keepers? Yeah, no! I let him have the old hog house, two grain bins and the machine shed. Inside the house, the stuff doesn't live here any more!

He was helping me find something in the old hog house/chicken house when I found a GIANT pile of old rotted soaker hoses that have been there a minimum of 8 years. Why haven't these been thrown away? All the do is provide hiding places for snakes! I just said something and walked on by. Of course, they are still there.

I still have all my cancelled checks since I opened up a checking account (old and current accounts) and all my pay stubs since when I started working, and I have boxes of credit card applications and what not that come in the mail that I don't want to just put in the garbage. I have at least two shredders that have never been taken out of the boxes. I absolutely hate trying to go through paperwork. My brain zones out real quick when I'm trying to decide "do I need to keep this or not".

You do not need to keep ANY of it! And since it is of no use, I don't want it all in my house because the clutter and stacks of boxes simply provide hiding places for brown recluse spiders. I learned in my first older house to never have anything cluttering the spaces. When hubby first moved all this c**p out here, I spent an hour a day with my shredder. Later, since we live out in the country, I convinced him all this junk was of no use and he burned it all in a burn barrel.

Fortunately John always had an office and basement to stash all his papers, so they didn't clutter up my life, but now that I'm faced with either moving them again or getting rid of them, I'm going for the latter option.

I've either recycled or donated all of the little electronic mystery gadgets, small appliances, much of the fishing gear and and other assorted "stuff" and even though the garage and parts of the house look very messy, most of the drawers in the house are empty now. I've bubble-wrapped all of John's framed photographs, most of which are quite large, and put them down in the basement for safekeeping. Next I box up the books and the CDs and DVDs. Digitizing the music sounds like a good winter project for another year, and I'll decide what to do with the books once I've moved.

It's a huge job and sometimes I feel like I'll never get through it, but I know I've made a huge dent in it.

It sounds like you're doing great with it all hagatha! I wish I had your stamina!

If I want to move any time this year I have to keep going, since it's just me this time.

We're having some beautiful weather this week. When it gets a bit warmer I'll be out on the deck, sweeping al the leaves and getting it ready for power-washing. It's been neglected for two years now and it's gone completely green with algae.

But first, mugs of coffee.

Right now the drab kitchen backsplash is being replaced with a nice clear glass subway tile, and it looks amazing. The tiler is a bit of an oddball, from Newfoundland, with the strong Newfie accent (the area was originally settled by Irish folks and the accent lingered). He's quite funny but keeps wanting to steer the conversation towards politics, and let's just say that we are not on the same page. Time to clap on the headphones and start playing!

Good morning Gerry, Connie, Hagatha, OldBroad, Draclvr, SpaceQuestFan, TaintedFury and anyone else who gets the chance to pop in. I took the day off today as will be starting work way too early tomorrow...so must get psyched for the day. Strong dark brew coffee and a danish are perfect Gerry and Connie. I know what you mean Hagatha...political discussions have become very toxic which is why I totally avoid them. The weather cooled back off today which is very nice as we'll have triple digits with humidity soon enough. Happy Hump Day everyone.
