Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 02/20/26 08:53 PM

Good Friday afternoon. I noticed my daffodils are peeking their little green heads out of the ground! Hope they don't get frozen off.

So I've been wrangling computers. Got my new one last yesterday and just had time to connect to monitor and boot it up... except it didn't. Fans were running, lights were on, but nobody was home... nothing on my screen. I tried a different monitor; I tried a different cable - nothing. I sent a quick email to Mike at ecollegepc just before I left for bowling last night at 6. He responded right away and told me to check the motherboard code when it booted up. ASUS has nice big red code number to help you troubleshoot. Well, my code was 55 - no RAM detected. I asked if it was OK if I just reseated the RAM. I have a huge CPU cooler and was worried about taking that off, but I just had to snap off one of the end fans. Popped the RAM, reseated it, replaced the cooler fan and TA DA! Success! So, when I recommend ecollegepc because of their customer service, this is why. They can all make mistakes, but it's how they handle them that makes the difference.

Glad you're up and running Drac. I agree with your last sentence but for myself, I probably would have had to return the whole unit or take it to Best Buy.

Yes, for sure, it helped that I was familiar with the interior workings of a computer. I don't know how they help those who don't know their way around inside. Probably return the unit.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 02/21/26 03:20 PM

Good Saturday morning. We're having a few snow flurries right now, but it's not supposed to amount anything.

My goodness this computer is fast! My old one was state of the art 6 years ago, but these new generation SSDs are wonderful! I put an Ultra processor in it too, so I'm sure that makes a diffeerence. Now, what to play first! I'm thinking I might download the new Vampire Masquerade. I've played through most of it, but was last summer, so I won't remember anything!

I am doing the night feeding/closing for two nights down at the Ranch. Not much to do right now. I have to feed three old guys and Bubbles the Zebu and that's it! We have a heated vet room where we put animals that must stay in quarantine and need heat. I have to go in there that turn out lights if there is anything in there. Last night there was a mama Nubian goat with two little babies! OMG, they were so cute! Nubians are the goats with the long floppy ears.

Good Saturday morning everyone. Another warm morning for our walk at 72 degrees and now we're enjoying rain showers. I think I have a grocery run this afternoon but first we're gathering a portion of the family clan to play ROOT, the RPG over the lunch timeframe. Yes indeed Draclvr, baby goats and sheep are adorable. Time to tank up on WADDB and bagels.

Have a wonderful Saturday everyone wave

Happy Saturday! Gloomy and gloomy here. Brother brought my groceries and I have 2 (hopefully easy) recipes I'll be making this week.

I woke up from some dream about some type of mini game I was playing but I don't recall ever playing that particular game in real life gaming. Too bad I can't remember it. I often dream about puzzles in games I am playing. Probably tells you something about my life. laugh

Enjoy your day everyone!

LOL! I had a similar dream the other night. It was about some game puzzle which I don't remember!

Get this! Forgot to tell you that Mike with ecollegepc offered to drive out to my house and get this new computer running if I wasn't successful! That would hardly be possible if you lived far away, but even the offer was impressive.

Good Morning oldbroad, connie, Draclvr, soot and everyone! Wide Awake Double Dark Brew is ready. wave

I had to climb over a 4 foot snowbank to get to my neighbor's house to care for the cat! The snow had drifted in their driveway so it was really deep! Their driveway hopefully was plowed late afternoon yesterday so I can get in the driveway this morning. We are getting more snow this morning...up to 3 inches...problem is the icy patches in the driveway will be hidden so it will be tricky walking in the driveway to get to the cat.

My neighbors are flying home late this evening and there are snow showers perdicted when they arrive!

It will take weeks for all the snow to melt...no daffodils to enjoy this spring! cry

It is snowing again right now! winter

Good morning, everyone.

Stay safe, all of you buried in snow.

We're having unseasonably warm weather right now. I'm doing a walkaround with the landscaper today to pick some trees and shrubs. Now that the pond is fixed, it's looking a bit bare and needs some structure.

My laptop is back for the THIRD time. It was already on when I opened it and...there was yet another error message. And then another. I restarted it several times and finally it seemed to load properly, Of course, now I'm starting with a completely empty computer and have to reinstall all my programs and copy my files back onto the hard drive. Most of that is fine but now I have to reconnect the printer and THAT is a huge problem. I hate this stuff. It stresses me out terribly. I almost feel as though it's time for a desktop instead. Now that I have my spiffy office, I have room for one.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 02/27/26 04:21 PM

Good morning everyone.

Grrr. The laptop is not sorted. First thing this morning there was an error message and a shutdown. This is getting ridiculous. I'd better start looking for a desktop because clearly Dell's technical staff can't fix this machine.

Nothing on my plate today except another frustrating phone call to Dell. Also, another frustrating call to my internet/email provider; their website won't load, I can't access my email on this computer, and their unhelpful and surly technical "support" means it's time to switch over to Gmail and Telus, which has fibre optic.

Apart from that, though, we're still having nice Spring like weather. I've got three trees coming in March for privacy and colour, and then the garden will be done.

Good Friday afternoon. Didn't quite make it to the break room this morning. Plumbers were here to replace a leaking toilet upstairs. Yikes, almost $600 for the toilet and the labor!

Hagatha, I am head over heels with my new desktop! That laptop must be a real lemon... do you just have to accept that they can't fix it or will they give you a refund?

Gerry, did Pudsley's mom and dad make it home?
Posted By: soot

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 02/27/26 07:13 PM

Hagatha, they could fix but would be 'extra cost' for new components. There were laptops in our organization which were "lemons" and we swapped them out for new laptops and used some parts from the lemons that we tested /knew were functional.

wave

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 02/27/26 07:28 PM

Draclvr, Soot, They didn't charge me for any work they did, but then who knows what they did? The report I got back with the computer had literally no information on what work got done. Obviously, they did a factory reset or reinstalled Windows, but I have no idea what else got done.

I told them that if anything not covered under the warranty came up, they should contact me so I could approve the expense Nobody did, so I assume nothing extra got done.

I do have to accept the laptop's lemon status and I don't mind, as long as the company fixes it. I did an end run around them and phoned their sales department. The nice fellow I talked to in Texas said he knew who to escalate the case to, not one of the tech grunts but a supervisor and he sent me an email confirming our conversation as documentation. Who knows?

I did get my email sorted, though. Now I have to see if I can import my emails into Gmail. I did that with John's webmail account just to see if it works, so I should know by tomorrow or the next day.

Good morning everyone.

We're heading into a couple of rainy days, perfect for sorting through my kitchen cupboards and reorganizing pots and pans into a more logical order, with the heavy cast iron stuff at waist height for easy reach.

My coffee this morning is a yummy new bean from a local roastery that my handyman recommended. Nanaimo may not be the world's nicest city (not by a long shot!) but it does have a couple of good coffee roasteries.

Connie, It's lovely that you can remember your husband surrounded by friends.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/01/26 04:40 PM

Good morning everyone,

It's a bright and beautiful morning, quite warm and Spring-like, and the cats are going nuts because of the change in the weather. Zoomies all morning. I have a few things to tidy up out in the garden in preparation for the arrival of trees. It really feels like Spring, sun pouring in through the French Doors and shrubs starting to go into bud. Apart from heavy rain we didn't really have a winter this year -- though we have had heavy snow in March in years gone by so it's still a remote possibility.

I have many birds in my pond these days. I was worried that the new stream was too fast for them but they still drink and bathe in it. Once I get the new trees planted around the back they'll have places to perch.

I'm always up to date on my Flu and COVID boosters. I can't afford to get sick.

Happy Sunday and welcome to March! According to the weather forecast, we'll be moving into Spring next week.

I have never had either a Flu shot or a Covid shot. Last year a friend of mine who never had a Flu shot, got one. He had multiple, numerous, many bad things happen because of it and will never get another one again. He even ended up in the ER for something.

Need to pay bills today but that's about it. Enjoy your day all!

Good Morning everyone! Wide Awake Double Dark Brew is ready. wave

Happy to say we only got 1/2 inch of snow yesterday. But with snow piles 4 feet deep it is going to be weeks before it melts! Not a speck of grass is visible any where. The snow on my deck is 3 feet deep...some of it from drifting off the roof. The days are getting longer and the sun is stronger, but the cold nights slow the melting.

Hope you all have a good Monday! wave

Good Monday morning, everyone.

We're having another lovely day. This was an early morning for me as it was Willow's monthly mani-pedi with the Vet Technician, who comes to my house on her way to work to trim her claws.

Went out to the store, got all the chores done early so I can have a nice relaxing day until later in the afternoon, when I have a phone call booked with yet another Dell technician. Hopefully I won't have to send the computer back again, but I'm not holding my breath.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/02/26 08:49 PM

I'm anxious to hear how this call with the Dell technicians goes. It was SUCH a bad sign when it was shipped back to you still turned on. Seems to me they are just putting band-aids on it and not really fixing anything. I Strong suspect the motherboard was NOT replaced at all last tiime.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/02/26 09:05 PM

Draclvr, the laptop has been left on all three times it's been shipped back to me. I unbox it, open it up, and immediately see an error message on the screen. It is working, though, and did a couple of auto--updates this morning so hopefully it's ALMOST repaired. It seems there's just a general carelessness going on over there. The reports always say they've tested the laptop and verified it's working properly, but then they send it back showing an error message. I don't think they're hiring the best and brightest.

It's too bad, because when it's working properly it runs EVERYTHING well. It's the last laptop I'll buy anyway.

EDIT: So the fellow who called today checked the laptop remotely and acknowledged that something is just not working properly. Dell computers have a very useful on-board support program that will neither launch nor uninstall from my computer and I think there were some other similar glitches along the same line. He's going to see if someone else has any suggestions and call back on Wednesday. At least I can now use the laptop.
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/03/26 01:16 AM

Shipping the laptop back still on with an error message indicates a definite lack of the best and brightest there. At least it sounds like you have someone useful who has a clue to help you out.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/03/26 03:54 PM

Good morning everyone.

We're heading into some rain this week. I'm basically staying at home for a few days as one of my knees is acting up severely, though I did manage to limp around the neighbourhood yesterday for a little while just to keep it from freezing up.

Tax season is coming up on us, too. I do have a tax accountant, a left-over from when we had our rental properties. Now that it's just me I should probably switch to somebody local since my taxes are now fairly simple and the only documents I have to prepare are the health expenses not covered by insurance.

Gerry, I hope your weather improves. My mother lives in Hamilton Ontario and they've been buried under a heavy winter, too.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/05/26 03:35 PM

Good morning everyone.

Well, the call with Dell accomplished nothing, The tech admitted that he and his colleague were stumped. We've rescheduled for next Wednesday as the laptop is at least functional, IF I can get it to start, and that involves several false starts, error messages and automatic restarts before it actually loads properly. I'm not going to start reloading it with programs just yet as I see another operating system reinstall in my future. I'm pretty sick of it at this point.

I spent much of yesterday deleting old emails. and forwarding important ones to Gmail. I can't believe how much junk there was in there from years and years ago. don't actually like Gmail but I don't know where else to go with this. I'm just tired of being stuck with webmail tied to my provider.

Today is the start of the beginner's Line Dance class. I hope my knee doesn't give me trouble. I seem to be having joint problems everywhere at the moment, not just my shoulder but knee, hands, hip, back, even one side of my jaw. Something odd going on.

In mid-March I get my new Magnolia tree planted. It's going to be strategically placed so that it blocks the sight of a really ratty old trailer across the road.
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/05/26 03:50 PM

I've been waiting to hear about the laptop from he11. Doesn't sound very encouraging.

I hate the new webmail from my ISP provider. I use Microsoft Office Outlook to download everything to my computer so I don't have to deal with it. I have a Gmail account and an Outlook.com account for other things. I don't really like Gmail myself either, but it is at least reliable.

The joint issue don't sound fun... hope there is nothing nefarious going on.
Posted By: hagatha

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/05/26 04:50 PM

The joint issue is probably just an acceleration of my arthritis. My physiotherapist thinks I should stop the Ball Pilates I'm doing. I fear she may be right. It's too bad because I enjoy the people in the class, plus the instructor (who teaches out of her home) has four cats and one of those cats is a sweet little guy who greets us all at the door as we arrive. I would miss the little guy. I've known him since he was a kitten.

Maybe I should use Outlook, too, before I get too reliant on Gmail. So Microsoft Office Outlook actually downloads emails? That's good to know. Maybe when I get this laptop sorted I'll check that out.

EDIT: Bah. I give up. The computer is once again crashing, showing error messages when trying to start, overheating while I'm just browsing and now the battery is discharging and recharging while it's plugged in.
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/05/26 09:28 PM

Yes, Office Outlook is what is called an email client. Thunderbird is another one which is a stand alone option. To get Office Outlook, you have to purchase Microsoft Office which has Outlook. I don't want Office 365 where I have to pay for it every year. If I didn't need the other Office applications such as Excel and Word, I would just use Thunderbird.

If you want to give it a try, this is where you can get it. Open Source and free. You will need to set it up to make a connection with your webmail. There are port settings etc. which you may need to get from your ISP. You can set up as POP3 - older, but I find it words better. Or you can set it up as IMAP. At least I think you can. You will have to do a little digging into Thunderbird.

https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/

EDIT: Hagatha, I downloaded to my new computer and Thunderbird set up the port settings automatically!

What was really good about the dance class was that it wasn't all Western Line Dancing, There was a dance with a Latin beat and one that was more rock-and-roll. My friend and I watched some of the following class with more advanced dancers and some of them are very good. It's a HUGE class held at the local Legion, which has a large space. I must admit that even with my two years of Pilates and all the walking I do, I still found myself muscle-tired at the end of it. Good exercise.

Good morning everyone!

No moronic time change in Europe this weekend. That lunacy will occur last Sunday of March. The Eu decided several years ago to get rid of it but apparently they can't agree on how to do it so we're stuck with the madness for now. Did I say that I really think the time change is a horrible idea?

Anyway. WADDB mitigates the pain.

I'm a bit out of it this morning because of the time change. Obviously the cats are affected, too, since feeding times are an hour off schedule.

I truly hope this is the last time change. Apparently every province and state is just waiting for someone else to start the ball rolling. BC announced years ago that time changes would stop but it never happened. Maybe this will be it.

Going for a walk this morning and then I have to practice my dance steps.

Happy Monday and new week to you all! I was dreaming I won $3,000 on a scratch off ticket. I didn't.

What is MTG, soot?

What I most don't understand about changing the clocks is why they are changing when we change them. Earlier in Spring and later in Autumn. Maybe they are trying to get to a merging point, eliminating the change slowly. I know I said this before, but I don't even bother changing my clocks at all anymore. This change made them all be right again.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/09/26 09:48 PM

Good Monday afternoon. Had to grab a to-go cup of WADDB on my way out this morning. Had to go work on my friend's printer. I was about to start tearing out my hair! I pulled every trick in the book and it printed one page and quit. So I kept poking and uninstalling and reinstalling and trying this and that and the last try, it connected. I told her to make a burnt offering to the printer gods and it worked!

It was so hot in her house - temps are 82 degrees F today.

Originally, the time change was supposed to add an hour of light earlier in the morning to get kids off to school during the school year. Then it would go to daylight savings time to add an extra hour of light at the end of the day during the summer. Time must just laugh at us - it's just us and our need to work with clocks in the rest of the world. I'm lucky that I never even notice the clock change at all. But it is odd to have more light at the end of the day again!

Good morning everyone ... Tootin Toosday to you all!

Perfect timing for wide awake double dark brew and bagels as I'm dog sitting today for grandson. We believe she is a sweet little Staffordshire Bull Terrier (mix). When Diana and our Max are out back they conduct a steeplechase sprint around the backyard for 20 minutes and then wrestle for 5 minutes and then it's back to the steeplechase. We stop them after an hour of exercise to let them rest. They get a great workout...she really needs it and it's great for our older man Max!

OldBroad, MTG is "Magic: The Gathering," a really fun trading card game that we play with our son and then occasionally with our grandson who usually beats the pants off of all of us! Yeppers, that's the nice thing about the newer "smart clocks" as they know when to change and do it themself. But we still wish the DC bunch would get their "collective" act together and officially drop the time change construct...it's no longer needed in my humble opinion...I'm thinking the farmers could care less and I don't think it really saves energy...

Yes, Draclvr, burnt offerings for technology issues usually does fix those headscratch problems rotfl More daylight at the end of the day is "really" present the further up North you are...I still remember those bright evenings when I lived in Montana.

I'll be working spring yard clean-up too Connie ... but that's a task for another day. I plan on enjoying WADDB and bagels this morning.

Have a wonderful day everyone wave

Good Tuesday morning. Ah, a nice relaxing morning with my WADDB and the windows open. Hubby went fishing with his nephew, so I have the house to myself.

Another 80+ degree day today and then it's back down to the normal 50's and 60's. I'm thinking a nice walk down to the woods through the pasture will be in order. I'll have to say out of the woods though and the ticks are awake!

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/10/26 03:48 PM

Good morning everyone.

We're back to gloomy. cold and windy after a couple of very nice days.

My physiotherapist has concluded that the Pilates classes are the reason all of my joints are having trouble (shoulder, knee, ankle, lower back). I have to agree. Every time I take a week off things get better. I probably have arthritis, but many of the exercises just don't feel right to me and are probably exacerbating the problem, so I'm reluctantly giving up my place in the class. The instructor also does yoga classes so I've signed up for those instead.

Nothing on my agenda today except practising my dance steps for this week's class.

Good morning everyone.

We're having very odd weather here. Yesterday it rained, then it tried to snow for an hour, then it was sunny and gorgeous, and then the rain set in for the rest of the day. A typical BC coastal Spring day, in other words.

I'm off to yoga this morning, then hopefully what will be the last call with Dell. I bought a new external hard drive so they can reinstall Windows. It's pink. That way I can easily distinguish it from the ten or so black external drives that have all John's photos and papers, and my one backup drive.

I took a look at Thunderbird but I can't seem to write and send emails from it. I think I probably have too many emails for the app to handle.

I do hope you all are having a good day.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/11/26 08:17 PM

Thunderbird is an email client - which means that it is not an email provider all by itself. You have to connect it to an existing email account - or accounts. I have mine connected to my webmail account provided by my ISP. If you have a Gmail account, you could connect it to that account and use Thunderbird to send and receive email from your desktop.

I'm not sure that makes sense! If it doesn't, post something in the Glitches forum and I'll try to be more clear.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/11/26 08:41 PM

I connected it to my Outlook account. No need to go to Glitches or look into anything. I was just commenting but I don't really care if it works or not. Thanks!

Hi everyone; I've been in bed for a few days, up now for a couple of hours. Two years ago when I lost most of by blood & went into defib I developed a heart condition & diverticulitis, so every once in a while I get attacks that send me to bed. I was so proud that I got my weight up to 90 pounds but I've since lost a bunch, I'm at 84 lbs now. I laugh because everyone I know wants to lose weight & I'm trying to gain it. Nothing much on the agenda here, just doing a quick clean around the house in preparation for a visit from an old friend who also moved to Campbell River when she and her late husband retired. We go back more than 40 years, since John was an untenured Crim instructor and she ran the admin side of the Department.

I went to the second line dance class yesterday. It's a lot of fun. Not too taxing but it is, after all, the absolute beginner's class and there is also an actual Beginner's level above it. We're like the baby steps class.

The laptop still does that weird thing where the battery charge goes up and down a few percentage points, and it's never done that before, but right now it's at 100% charge. Apart from that it does seem to be working well. The last time I sent it back to Dell they did reinstall Windows, but it wasn't right and so it kept crashing. Now it seems stable.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/14/26 03:23 PM

Good morning everyone.

We had hail last night. My ensuite has a skylight so it was quite impressive-sounding. At some point in the night the power went out, too, and it's cold today.

I'm just doing a quick tidy and make up the guest bed; if I do that the day before it becomes covered in cat hair. They can't resist those nice clean sheets and that nice off-white bedspread.

Have to tale a break from Morrowind. I actually had a dream about not having enough filled soul gems. lol zombie

Draclvr, the laptop only has to hold on for another year or so. This year I have major garden expenses coming up, four new shrubs and trees, and I've asked the landscaper to get me 5 foot trees so they'll add structure right away. Plus my lawn needs some major work as it's mostly moss. If I'm going to have a garden it might as well be nice, and I can't manage the work any more. There was a time when John and I enjoyed working in our garden in Burnaby, but those days are long gone.

Anyway, I have my Steam Deck, and that runs most of the newer games I want to play. The laptop is running well for the moment.

I couldn't agree with the pricing on Corned Beef this year (or last year) so, none for me. I only had two items on my grocery list and one of them really gave my brother a headache. Kimchi in a jar. He hates when I put *unusual* items on the list, but to him, most of the things I like are unusual. I have two recipes I want to try with the Kimchi but they will have to wait until after next weeks shopping trip as I didn't want to get the ingredients if he couldn't find the Kimchi.

I hope you enjoy your puzzle, Gerry. What is the picture? I only do digital puzzles these days and haven't actually been doing those for awhile now.

Good Sunday afternoon.

I had a great visit with my friend. Last night we got to the restaurant/pub for our reservation and saw a sign saying that the place was closing the next day (i.e. today). We were thinking that they'd be using up what was left in the fridge, but clearly the chef wanted to out with a bang because the meal was wonderful.

As for the laptop, it crashed again. I went through all of the error messages and it shut down. I restarted it and it loaded, but was doing Windows updates. It's done this before, several times. I think it's something about the automatic Windows updates that is crashing the laptop. I've reported all of this to Dell, but I'm going to turn off auto-updates and see what happens.

We are expecting a severe weather day today...could get up to 5 inches of rain and with high winds gusts expected to 50+ they are expecting power outages. With the ground already saturated from the 4 feet of snow that melted all that rain will cause flooding.

Good morning everyone!

New week new coffee. 7 Celsius and a mostly gray sky.
As for the windows problems I suggest giving the machine some alone time now and then. That is let it be powered on and do its own thing for awhile while you enjoy WADDB or read a book or whatever feels right. It seems the system now and then needs some time to get its act together and clean itself up but as soon as you do something it obediently gives you the full attention. And over time a huge backlog of mess to sort out gets piled up. So give the poor PC some slack now and then.. No guarantees but sometimes that can help.

I'm off to Yoga this morning. I hate to say it, but my joints are much happier when I'm not going to Pilates.

It's a cold, wet day and I'm looking forward to an afternoon of Morrowind. Good thing I'm comfortable using the console... I'd forgotten how buggy the vanilla version is!

Fogfighter, I keep meaning to plant garlic. I bought some huge bulbs last fall but couldn't decide where to put them. Maybe I need a raised bed.

Hagatha, garlic is super easy to grow, but make sure you do not use grocery store garlic. Find a source for varieties that are suited for your climate and location. Herer in the midwest of the US, we plant in October and harvest in late June. It needs to have a period of cold to do well. Your climate is different.

Ack! My brother just told me that he slipped on some ice in our gangway and fell and hit his head on the cement (almost hit the window) which caused a bump and a headache. Probably good that he has a little hair on that part of his head. He said he laid there for a few minutes unable to get up. Apparently, and thankfully, he is okay though.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/19/26 12:16 AM

Oldbroad, I hope your brother is okay. That sounds like a really bad fall.

Draclvr, the farm market sold this wonderful Russian garlic -- massive cloves. I froze a few bulbs for the winter. You only ever need to peel one or perhaps two for any recipe.

Apparently that variety grows very well here so I'll get some in the fall and plant it.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/19/26 01:18 AM

Thanks guys. I had to clarify with him about not being able to get up. I guess it was more that he was concerned about getting up too fast because he suffers from dizziness at times, so he was waiting and taking it slow. He seems fine tonight.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/19/26 01:25 AM

That's kind of a relief - I was worried maybe he COULDN'T get up right away. Wise of him to just stay down for a few minutes.

Connie, that is so sad.

We're still in the midst of a rain storm, but it's warm; warm enough that Dude refused to come in until very late last night. The little jerk. Even shaking the bag of treats out the door didn't lure him in. I had a nice little cat house made for him so that he can stay in there if I'm not up to let him in. He's afraid of it. rolleyes

Good morning everyone.

Oldbroad, I decided I'd do one class of each Pilates and Yoga per week. My shoulder and knee seem fine today. We'll see how I do. Between those two and my walking and the dancing I should be in pretty good shape and I suspect at my age I'll just have to accept that things won't be perfect.

Also, the thing about the Pilates is that I really like the women in the class, plus the instructor's four young cats are around for the Pilates classes but they've usually gone to sleep by the time Yoga starts. One of them is such a sweet boy I'm tempted to steal him.

Good morning everyone.

I was watching TV last night when I heard a strange buzzing noise. Looked for the source inside the house then realized it was coming from the septic tank alarm system. I checked the breaker and it was in the on position. The fellow I spoke to on the phone last night said he thinks it's likely the pump. They'll be here this morning to have a look.

And I must ask the age-old question: why cannot these things go wrong during the week, instead of on the weekend when prices are doubled? It's a mystery.

Annnnd...my laptop just crashed. lol

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/22/26 06:35 PM

Well, it turned out that the septic tank pump's breaker had actually flipped. Whoever labelled the breaker panel mislabelled the pump's breaker. Anyway, that usually means the pump has failed.

The fellow from the tank company came by early this morning and fortunately had the the correct pump in his truck because they know this property and its system, and all is well now. I'm rather glad I have the tank warning system. A few more days and this could have been a disaster of epic proportions. scared

Research notes I can see! But doctor appointment summaries for appointment that happened 4 years ago??? He is a serious hoarder and simply cannot throw anything away, no matter how useless it is. There is a pile of old garden hoses that have actually gone rotten after laying in a one foot tall pile for 15 years in a shed. They are likely full of snakes and other critters and utterly useless. But will he throw them away? Nope! Classic hoarder.
Posted By: hagatha

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/24/26 03:34 AM

My brother-in-law in Southampton has become a hoarder in his old age. He looked after his parents for decades and after his mother died, he and his father couldn't cope with basic filing and sorting and the place filled up over the years. John used to go across the pond every year and clean up as much as he could in two weeks. I can just imagine what the place looks like now.

True hoarding is serious. When I was managing a rental portfolio my resident managers used to show me the hoarder apartments. All the piled up paper becomes a serious fire hazard, and the weight can bring down a floor. Sadly, even if they can be convinced to clean up a bit, they backslide very quickly. We always ended up having to evict to protect the other renters.

I have a very hard time throwing anything out also. I hate trying to go through papers to figure out what I should or want to keep and I do have some boxes of them that I would someday like to shred but it just never gets done - ever. I have two shredders, neither of which has ever made it out of their boxes. I was proud of myself that I threw out some old plastic containers over the last six weeks or so from one of my kitchen cabinets. I couldn't reach some of the stuff even standing on a chair so it's still there. Two shelves, three sessions. duh

Good Tuesday morning. Sunny and cold, but supposed to be near 90 degrees F on Thursday!

oldbroad, that's what is suggested if you want to declutter. Just pick one shelf or one tabletop or one corner of a room and tackle it. Then pick another corner or box and tackle that. Or maybe just get one shredder out of the box and plug it in. Shredding paper is very satisfying - I could do it all day! These days, there is virtually no paperwork that needs to be kept for more than a year. We keep important documents like wills, marriage certificates, birth certificates, deeds etc., in a safe deposit box in the bank.

I'm meeting a bunch of friends for lunch in town today. A woman in our group needs a heart transplant and we are getting together to offer support. I think she is only 65, but she has some genetic heart issue. Two of her daughters have it too. Can't remember the name, but the heart muscle gets thicker and thicker over time.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/25/26 03:20 PM

Good morning everyone.

No, the SSD did not do the trick. I keep pointing out that the battery is always charging and I'm always getting the 4 red, one blue light flash on the Start button, but the technicians don't seem to want to look at that, although there's tons of information online about Alienwares doing this. It's my battery. I checked the battery usage levels this morning and they are at 100% while I'm doing literally nothing on my laptop except check the battery levels. As soon as I start a game, the warning lights start flashing and battery usage goes to 100% but once I shut the game down the battery usage levels never go back down. I'm seeing some helpful posts on line that I'll try.

We had a long power outage yesterday. It gave me a chance to use my portable generator and make a cup of tea, fry some eggs, power up my tablet and not worry about having no coffee in the morning if the power didn't come back on. The one I got would be good for a couple of days. Between that and the fireplace, I'm all set for a winter power outage. I was almost disappointed when the power came back on. lol

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/26/26 08:31 PM

Today I am more thankful and grateful! My brother had scheduled the gas meter to be changed out but did not do anything with his stove. He was planning on turning it off with some switch on the pipe or something and saying that he doesn't use the stove. I have been worrying for a couple of weeks about this. Yesterday he admitted that he wasn't sure how the switch worked because it could go up or down and seemed hard to move so he didn't attempt it. When I had spoke to the gas company they told me that they do not do the capping of stoves but this guy that came out did! He checked everything, capped the stove off, changed the meter, and then checked everything again. Took about an hour but the job is done and hopefully done for another 20 years! He asked the guy about the stove connection and was told that if the hose was different (like the new one we had replaced on the clothes dryer) that it would be okay, so my brother MAY contact that appliance repair guy to have him uncap the stove and replace the hose. I don't know. He may just buy a countertop oven. He had looked at them but didn't get one. He mostly uses the oven only to make his frozen pizzas. He has used it in the past for burgers and sausages after I told him he could cook those in the oven, but he hasn't made those for a long time. He also used to use the burner to heat up cat food but has since started doing that a different way.

Speaking of the cat, unfortunately he went out yesterday and hasn't been back, even to eat, so we are a little worried about him right now. Fingers crossed he will show up.

Ah, speaking of the ungrateful wretch of a cat - he's back!

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/27/26 03:00 AM

That's such good news that you got a sympathetic gas guy! I hope your brother just gets a nice countertop oven... some of them are really nice.

I suspect your kitty is not neutered, so this is the time of the year they are out "tom-catting." But glad the ungrateful wretch is back!
Posted By: oldbroad

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/27/26 03:30 AM

Yeah, I am hoping he'll just go for the countertop oven also. He's probably not sure where to put it though. Actually, I think he has one somewhere but had no place to put it when he got his microwave. Not sure what he did with it.

The wretch didn't stay long. He's out again. I'm assuming he is not neutered since he apparently lives outside. I know my brother wishes he could convert him to a house cat but I'm pretty sure that will never happen. I do like having him around too just to be able to talk to and look at now and then.

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/27/26 03:37 AM

So pleased your ā€œgasā€ worry has been sorted.
And it sounds like a ā€œcountertopā€ oven would probably really suit your Brother’s cooking needs šŸ‘

As for the cat …. Maybe it actually does know on which side its bread is buttered !! 🤭

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/27/26 04:16 AM

Oh yeah, Mad. He knows where he can get all the food he can eat and where he can sleep without having one eye open to watch for danger. Also, even though he did go out in sub zero weather, he knew he could get warmed up here. When he is out at night, my brother doesn't get much sleep. He gets up to look out the window for him multiple times during the night.

Good Friday morning. 93 degrees F yesterday and 43 degrees F today!

Need to get a hummingbird feeder put up today. They usually don't start arriving until around April 15, but I like to have it up in case there are any early travelers. My resident flock is usually a little later. I'm also going to start my tomato seeds this weekend. My peppers are all up and growing nicely. I will put them down in the basement under a grow light in another week or two.

Good morning/afternoon everyone.

Oldbroad, I'm glad the kitty came back. When Dude is out late at night I wait up for him if it's cold outside, too. A few times I've gone to bed and woken up later to check on him. He's always there eventually, although these days the little jerk understands that when the lights turn off it's time to come in.

Our Rufous hummingbirds should be showing up soonish. I wish I could have feeders but Dude is too good a hunter. The birds do come down to my water feature and drink and bathe, so at least I'm giving them something.

Good Saturday morning. Oh, oh! Better watch out today, Fogfighter!

A little chilly, but sunny today. Perfect for our first Wagon Day at the Ranch. This is one of several free events we hold every year. I will mostly be doing the wagon tours. I hope we have plenty of volunteer help. It's been kind of iffy sometimes and then I have to do them ALL! Since were outdoors and there about 25 people on the wagon while we go to the back of the Ranch, I have to talk very loudly and my voice gives out after a couple of tours! We run them from 11 to 3 except for an hour off when Twister paints in the big arena.

It was a really nice day at the Ranch - about 60 degrees F, but sunny. I even took off my jacket in the afternoon. Soot, no this is a free day for people to come out and enjoy the Ranch. We hold 3 of these in the spring and 3 in the fall. The only one where we charge is our fundraiser in April. Nope, no megaphone. We've tried portable sound systems, but they just don't work. So, we just talk loud!

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/29/26 02:48 AM

Oldbroad, your recipe for the week sounds pretty good! Actually, it sounds like the meal I just made.

There's a local company here in town that makes various different curry sauces to go and honestly they're as good as anything I've had in some restaurants and certainly better than I can make. Tonight's was coconut mango Thai rice with Thai curry chicken, and a giant salad.

My Willow is a black cat, so I definitely concur about them being cool.
Posted By: oldbroad

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/29/26 05:16 AM

Now I feel bad because I forgot somehow about the black cat my brother had, which means we had 3 black cats altogether, not 2. My 2 were males; his was female.

I don't know what color I thought Willow was, but it wasn't black.

A new day after a short night.

We did the asinine timechange in Europe this night. Can't even coordinate with the North Americans when making a mess of the times.

I'm fairly certain the black cat is innocent here. He no doubt just came to remind me of the inevitable misfortune.

Not the cat's fault. I don't blame the messenger.

Beside the time change no accidents happend.

Oldbroad, that recipe sounds so good. I was too tired to cook when I got home from the Ranch yesterday, so just ordered pizza and hubby went in town and picked it up. Like you, I never thought of hagatha's cat Willow as black! Maybe a longhaired grayish cat!

Unfortunately, I totally forgot to use sunscreen yesterday and I got a light sunburn on my face!

Re: Welcome to GameBoomers Break Room #22 - 03/29/26 08:47 PM

Dude is a long-haired brown tabby with a really cute pink nose. He really, really does not look or act like his name, which I think was more aspirational than grounded in fact.

Willow is a shiny bright-eyed black shorthair, not remotely petite. She's bigger than Dude.

My previous cat Rachel was a long haired grey and white tuxedo. That's probably where the confusion lies.

Mad, I hope you don't get any damage or anything bad!

It's usually a white plastic dial on the inside of the refrigerator on one of the walls. Or it might be in the middle of the inside just under the freezer towards the front. If the freezer isn't working, then your refrigerator will never get to a safe food storage temperature. Get one of those cheap little refrigerator thermometers and see what it says.

Mad, I hope everything's okay. I should check on my brother-in-law. I never hear from him any more. He's gotten quite odd, but if I do contact him I'll hear back.
