Patch for Riddle of the Sphinx/Quicktime problem - 08/09/08 02:37 PM

Could you give me a link for this please. I've looked on the Dreamcatcher Games website but it isn't listed.
When I go to Gameboomers Patches link I never know which website I need for a particular patch. Often these websites are very confusing to navigate and i just can't locate this.
Many thanks
Meryl

The Riddle of the Sphinx patch 1.01 is for the original version of the game published by Dreamcatcher back around year 2000. If you have the Viva Media version, or a reissue version from Dreamcatcher, you should not install that patch.

I've got the patch, thanks Robert.
I can't be sure Jenny as I got this game from a Boomer on this site but I think this is the original version. The Readme says V. 1.0 It's got 3 CD's.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

That sounds like the original then.
I don't think any of the reissue versions came on 3 CD's.

I think I've dug myself a hole here. Downloaded the patch but the game doesn't play all that well so don't want to continue.
In order to install the proper version of quicktime which comes with the game I had uninstalled my version. Before doing so, however, I set a system restore point (I'm on XP).
I've now used System Restore to the point I'd created thinking that my more up to date version of Quick Time would be there. But I can't open Quick Time in Control Panel so I don't know if it is there or not.
I haven't explained this very well but desperately need a bit of help.
I will never meddle with anything again like this even though lots of gamers probably do it!
Help me please!

QuickTime can be a real pain to uninstall, especially if you have a computer with antivirus or maintenance software that prevents changes to system files and folders. Newer versions of QuickTime have pieces of themselves running all the time -- and these don't uninstall when you try to uninstall them. You end up with a partial uninstall which does nobody any good. It might be more effective to boot to safe mode (where QuickTime won't be running all the time) in order to uninstall QuickTime. You may need to reinstall the newer version in order to uninstall it completely.

You may be better off trying the game with the newer version of QuickTime to see if it works. There are some tweaks you can do to QuickTime which may help compatibility, like changing Sound Out from Direct Sound to Wave Out, or disabling DCI, or using GDI only (aka QuickTime Safe Mode). Here is an adventuregamers thread that may be of help to you
http://www.adventuregamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18280

Jeff Tobler (who developed the game) posted a link to an installer in that thread.

Thanks for the links. I've read the threads. The game actually installed just fine after uninstalling my quicktime 6, installing the ROTS, quicktime 4 plus the patch. But the cursor kept freezing and I've had enough of "nursing" a game like this having just played The Longest Journey.
My experience and confidence just aren't up to diddling around with all sorts of settings.
I used System Restore to go back to pre-installation thinking that everything would be as it was before ROTS installation, including my version of Quicktime 6 being there. But it isn't. I can't access Quicktime from Control Panel or the list of Programs.
When I do a search plenty of Quicktime files come up and the readme file indicates I still have Quicktime 4 on the system despite the system restore to a period before it was put on the system!
I just want to be able to play current games so my question is will the Quicktime 4 be OK as it is or can I download the version 6 that I had, from somewhere and if so, where.
And secondary to that, do I continue with the computer as it is after the system restore or do I now reverse that system restore seeing how it didn't do what I wanted it to do.
I'm so sorry to be so long winded but i really need some advice on this. I just want my computer back to how it was.
Thanks kind people
Meryl

You should probably update to QuickTime 6 for current games that use QuickTime. The games themselves may include QuickTime 6, or you can download it here
http://oldversion.com/program.php?n=quicktime

I've used QuickTime version 6.3 with both RHEM 2 and RHEM 3. I think Alida also worked with that version.

You can leave the System Restore as it is. The only changes you made were to QuickTime and Riddle of the Sphinx. Changing QuickTime to a newer version isn't usually a problem. It's changing to an earlier version that can be difficult.

I played Riddle of the Sphinx with QuickTime 3.02 at the time it came out. That was with Windows 98. QuickTime 4 had visual problems -- things in a drawer would be totally black in color instead of looking as they should. Anyway, if you want to try again with it, try it with QuickTime 3 instead of QuickTime 4. On a newer computer, you'll probably have to reduce audio and video acceleration.

Thanks Jenny
You've given me the confidence to give that a try. I always think I'm going to make a fatal error that will mess up the computer beyond redemption. Ignorance isn't always bliss!

Just guessing here, but it looks like the reissue is labeled v1.1. I have a "Riddle of the Sphinx v1.1 READ ME!" which installed with the game.
