Free Virus Adware Checker - 03/09/10 11:31 PM

Does anyone know of a good one. I've got spybot on but that doesn't like my pc. I definitely have some annoying adware on my pc as when I do a google search I get sent to other sites when I click the link to get to the page that I want.
Does anyone know how I can get rid of it tried running malware bytes program but that just made it worse and have no sound drivers for my pc now. Thing told me they were infected and they have now been deleted.

If you're getting redirected, it sounds like you a far worse problem than some adware - you have a virus infection. You can always reinstall your sound drivers. It's hard to beat Malwarebytes for getting rid of this stuff. There are some malicious sites purporting to download Malwarebytes. Did you download it from here?

What did Malwarebytes find? Did it quarantine the results? Did you run it in Safe Mode or in a regular boot up?

What anti-virus program are you using? Have you run a scan with it yet?

Re: Free Virus Adware Checker - 03/10/10 05:37 PM

Don't have any antivirus software on just used spycheckers.
Managed to start windows normally from safe mode and it said malicious software had been removed and it was a trojan. Now when I search google it's letting me go to the links like normal. The sound driver is still deleted tho. Going to have another go at restarting windows but not hopeful I can get the sound back on.

To get your sound card working again, you have to reinstall the drivers.

Did your sound card come with a driver disc?

Do you have a separate sound card at all? or is it onboard (a sound chip built into the motherboard)?
If it's built into the motherboard, you may be able to get the drivers from the website of the motherboard manufacturer or (if it's a brand name computer) from the computer manufacturer's website.

I don't see anything I recognize as a sound card in the information you supplied.

If this is a name brand computer, what is the brand name and model number of the computer?

I just formatted my HD and lost my sound I have a onboard sound. Went to the website and downloaded realtex high definition audio driver and it worked just find. Maybe I was just lucky but it wouldn't hurt to try. You don't have any sound anyway. I have win xp.

One issue at a time, but once you get your sound card drivers reinstalled, make it a priority to install some good anti-virus software. Your adware programs such as Spybot do nothing for viruses and trojans such as the one that infected your computer. Jenny100 suggested Microsoft's Security Essentials for someone else, so I downloaded it and have been very satisfied so far.

The make of the computer is iqon but there is no website as I believe they went bust in the last year.
Didn't come with any discs windows xp was already installed on the pc and no driver discs came with it.
It was onboard sound and graphics that's right.
How will I find out the make and model of the pc Jenny?
I'm only using this pc for the internet but with no sound I can't watch catch up tv frown

Try checking on your sound in DXDIAG. Click on Start, Run and then type in DXDIAG. In the screen that comes up, click on the Sound 1 tab. Let Jenny know what it says on the left side.

Done that like I suspected it mentions no driver so somehow it has got deleted with that malware byte scan.

Re: Free Virus Adware Checker - 03/11/10 01:40 AM

The only "sound" in that screenshot is the sound in your modem, which surely was not what you were using for sound before.
Modems are the things that go: "Beep beep boop bap boop boop beep squuaaaaawwwwwwwwwkkkk hisssssssssssss choke" when they connect using dialup. You don't use them to listen to music.

Apparently your sound card won't show up at all until you install the drivers for it. You may need motherboard drivers as well as sound drivers to get it recognized.

You might try what is suggested ***here*** and see if the software they suggest will detect what type of sound card chip you have on your motherboard. Once you know that, you can do a Google search for drivers for it.

That helps a lot, but I'm totally puzzled. Jenny, you nearly made me spew my cold, frosty adult beverage all over my keyboard! ...beep, beep, squawk, hiss...

Do wait for Jenny to check this, but here is the page for drivers for the AC97 audio that is supposed to be on that motherboard.

That's the ticket - and while you're at, download and burn the entire set so you'll always have a copy handy.

You may want to apply all of the drivers on the page.

I agree with Inland.

Re: Free Virus Adware Checker - 03/12/10 04:55 PM

Well I've gone from bad to worse I was in the process of installing the drivers when machine crashed and now I can't get on even in safe mode so think I am totally screwed. Had to go to an internet cafe to get on as had to chase up an item I've not received from ebay. Sitting at home with no sound is appetising now wish I hadn't messed.
Thanks anyway guys but don't think anyone can help me now if I can't even logon.

Re: Free Virus Adware Checker - 03/12/10 08:10 PM

I have a feeling this happened because of damage caused by the virus -- or possibly the virus itself is still active. Either that or you have a hardware problem that coincidentally got worse right after you installed the new drivers. This is a bit much to troubleshoot over the Internet -- quite a bit worse than missing audio drivers.

Unless you have another computer at home that can access the Internet, I don't know what to suggest other than to either take the broken one to a repair shop -- or buy a new computer. You don't have a Windows disc to boot from or a way to download and burn diagnostic software from a website, so that doesn't leave much choice.

Re: Free Virus Adware Checker - 03/12/10 08:51 PM

Well, she could always buy a Windows disc, and reinstall it herself. Honestly though, unless you know what you're doing, please don't do this. You need to go to a repair shop, they can probably reinstall Windows for you somewhat cheap. However, judging by your computer specs, I would seriously consider buying a new computer. Windows XP would probably run alright, but I really don't know if any shops offer XP installations anymore. With only 256MB of RAM, Vista and Windows 7 would run pretty slow.

Except that the Windows CD wouldn't have the specific motherboard drivers. That's why the OEM's always provide them separately.

Re: Free Virus Adware Checker - 03/13/10 01:27 AM

True, but come on, doesn't everyone know someone with a computer and a burner, who also has access to the internet? Unless you have some obscure MB, it won't take more than 5 minutes to find the drivers.
Anyway, as I said, not an option I'd recommend unless you know a geek.

Re: Free Virus Adware Checker - 03/13/10 01:51 AM

I had the same thing happen to me and I got a xp disk from E-bay and reformatted my hard drive. I used it on two other computers. I was really surprised how easy it was.

Re: Free Virus Adware Checker - 03/13/10 01:59 AM

That's good to know, but didn't you need a separate driver disk for the Motherboard drivers? As InlandAZ pointed out, that's usually necessary for the motherboard specific stuff like network and chipset.

Re: Free Virus Adware Checker - 03/13/10 02:22 AM

I had the xp disk about three months for my other pc after I put a new harddrive in. I went to the Internet and got directions on how to reformat a hd. I just put the disk in and it booted from the xp disk. last week my other pc wouldn't load win and couldn't start in safe mode. I just put the xp disk in and formatted the hd and it worked perfect. I had to add a driver for my graphic card and my printer. I knew I would have to do that. I didn't do anything to my motherboard Don't know what kind of mother board was in my pc. I think I only paid $30 for the xp disk. I had a dell pc and another off brand that I reformated.
