Runtime error

Runtime error - 02/08/11 06:48 PM

I have been getting this runtime error:
(OS Vista 64 bit)
Program:C\Windows\System32\nvvsvc.exe.
I know it is connected to Nvidia but don't know why. I have also been getting a message stating Nvidia 260.99 either has closed or has stopped working.
I would appreciate help with this problem, do you have a solution?
Thanks,
Terri
oops
Oops is right! I cannot find the shortcut to nvcplui.exe, which I believe is my Nvidia control panel. Is that correct and how can I get it back?

According to
http://www.file.net/process/nvvsvc.exe.html

Quote:
Some malware camouflage themselves as nvvsvc.exe, particularly if they are located in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 folder. Thus check the nvvsvc.exe process on your pc whether it is pest.

So make sure the nvsvc.exe that you have on your computer is not located in C:\Windows or C:\Windows\system32.

Assuming it is not malware,
According to the "PC Pitstop Analysis" on this page
http://www.pcpitstop.com/libraries/process/i/nvvsvc.exe.html

It is not a necessary file and if you don't use
Quote:
specific advanced features of your NVidia graphics card, in particular overclocking, overriding of the refresh rate for OpenGL games, and dual monitor display
you can
Quote:
disable the service by setting it to disabled in the Startup Mode of the Services tab.

You could also try uninstalling and reinstalling your Nvidia drivers, in case they've become corrupt somehow.

Re: Runtime error - 02/08/11 08:27 PM

As always Jenny, thanks for your help. I haven't a clue what overclocking, overriding etc. is, so guess I don't need it. My concern is that sometime back I d/loaded a new driver from Nvidia and removed something from add/remove programs, perhaps a driver, I can't remember. But I do know that Mysterious Island 2 has not worked properly since I did it. The game had no problems but now it would be impossible to play it. It is distorted and jittery.
I did go to My PC>C>Windows>System32 and searched for nvvsvc.exe and only found nvvsvc with an application type file. It is dated 10/16/10 and I think that might be when I began having the problems with that game. Anyway, there is no nvvsvc.exe. file.

It sounds like your video card's driver files are corrupted.

It also sounds like your computer is set to "Hide extensions for known file types," which is the default for modern versions of Windows. That would explain why you're not finding "nvvsvc.exe"--it's there, but displaying as "nvvsvc".

Anyway, I recommend downloading and installing the newest available drivers for your video card. To do so, you'll need to know the model of your video card.

If you're not sure what video card you're using, you may be able to find out by looking at your computer specs, or either using Device Manager, or using dxdiag. Dxdiag is probaby the easier choice: click Start-->type

dxdiag

in the "Search programs and files box" and press return. Dxdiag should pop up: just click the Display tab to see some information about your video card, hopefully including the model number.

Unfortunately, the information can be incomplete: in my case, for example, my card is listed as a "Radeon HD 4800 series". That's not very precise, since it covers a large range of cards, but it's actually enough information to find the right drivers.

Once you've determined the model number, (or at least a close approximation of it,) go to Nvidia's driver download page and select the product type, series, and name, then set OS to Windows Vista 64-bit, make sure the language is set to English, and click Search, then click the green Download button. Save the file and then run it and follow the instructions on screen, making sure to allow changes to your computer if Windows asks for permission.

When it's done, it hopefully will have successfully replaced your malfunctioning drivers with newer, working ones. So test it out and see.

Hi Demosthenes. I did download the new driver, then tried to play Mysterious Island 2 and it still did not work properly. I can't imagine what I have done to cause this problem.
In add/remove programs it is only showing version 266.58.
My pc> C> Nvidia> Display driver> 258.96, 260.99 and 266.58.
I have Nvidia GeForce 9100.
I appreciate your help.
Thanks,

Re: Runtime error - 02/09/11 06:02 AM

Whatever you do, don't mess with the nvvsvc.exe file. It's true that malware can masquerade as nvvsvc, but System32 is also the directory where NVIDIA stores its completely legitimate nvvsvc.exe file.

I suspect if you go back and look at the file now, you may find the "date modified" date has changed to a more recent one, which would indicate the installation of newer drivers successfully updated the file.

When you try to run Mysterious Island 2, do you get any error messages? Is it popping up the nvvsvc error, or are you seeing that error under any other circumstances?

Re: Runtime error - 02/09/11 03:34 PM

Hi. I never found the nvvsvs.exe file. Correct, nvvsvc properties show yesterdays date, last accessed.
I have not seen the error message since updating the driver.
When I try to play Mysterious Island 2, it flutters when you move around in the game. If you're still it looks normal, but move and the background shakes. I will have to access it again and hopefully give you a better description.
Thanks again,
Terri

Re: Runtime error - 02/09/11 05:26 PM

It looks this game has a bunch of issues with screen flicker on NVIDIA cards: some have apparently been patched, but some haven't. Any driver released after version 186.18 (June 17th, 2009) is likely to break the game.

You might be able to fix the problem by digging up the 186.18 drivers on NVIDIA's website, uninstalling your current drivers and installing the old ones. But that's liable to cause problems in other, newer games.

You might want to contact support and ask them if they have any advice.

I got that computer in Aug. 09, wonder if that's what I got rid of. I know darn well that I removed something from Add/Remove programs. The game worked perfectly, before I did what I did!
Now, can you have more than one driver at a time and if so can't you switch between them?
I will try to contact support for help.
Thank you so much for your help Demos!

You can only use one version of the drivers at a time. But you can "revert to previous drivers" using Device Manager if your new drivers don't work out.

Re: Runtime error - 02/11/11 02:22 AM

Yeah, unfortunately if the drivers are causing the problem, you'd have to make a choice: either you use the new drivers and don't play this particular game, or you use the old drivers long enough to play the game and then reinstall the new drivers when you're done. The swapping isn't fast, so you can't keep swapping back and forth easily.

The old drivers also won't install directly over the new ones, so you'd have to uninstall the new driver from Programs and Features in the Control Panel, reboot, then install the old driver. Then when you're finished with the game, you can install the new driver so you're ready to play other games.

It's a bit messy, so I don't recommend it unless you really want to play the game and support doesn't offer any other options.

Re: Runtime error - 02/12/11 01:06 AM

Not good. How did everyone else play the game? Also, why is there no patch? It's not like this is a really new game. I downloaded it from Big Fish and they aren't any help either. The game has been on my pc for months, granddaughter wanted to play it, we loved playing the first one together and I hate to have to remove it, but........ doesn't look like I have a choice. I see where it was suggested that I download a new driver back in October for another game and I guess that's when it happened.
Thanks again for your help.

Which game was this now?
I don't see it mentioned in this thread.

If you got the game from Big Fish, you won't get a patch. If they make a patch, they integrate it into the download and you "patch" by reinstalling through the game manager.

I've read plenty of notes on Big Fish from folks who had problems running Return to Mysterious Island 2 with certain NVIDIA video cards. One Customer Support person actually said that they believe the graphical problem some people have with the game and NVIDIA cards is due to a bug in the programming of the game. Big Fish would probably give you a game credit for the game if you asked them for one (although I know what you want is to be able to play the game again).

Hi Marian. I too have seen many posts about problems with the game, but no solutions. I find this difficult to believe. Wonder will it ever be fixed. I've played the first game numerous times and would really like to play Return to Mysterious Island2 also.
