Black Mirror 1

Black Mirror 1 - 05/07/11 11:42 AM

Having just finished BM3 I decided to play the BM 1 & 2 again. When I had loaded 1 I got a warning that it had a trojon and will not therefore play. Has anyone else come across this? It played fine a few years ago.

Sounds like it's a false positive - what AV software are you running.

AVG/microsoft I think.

You may need to disable AVG while installing the game, or add it to the exceptions list -

How to make an exception with my AVG?

I'm not sure what version you have, but they should all be pretty much the same.

If you've got the disc version of Black Mirror 1, it will probably have StarForce 3 and you'll need the NoCD to play it on Vista or Windows 7. Even on XP it's iffy. StarForce 3 installs the first time you run the game, so that's probably what AVG is objecting to.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm playing on XP. I tried to make it an ezception but it still will not allow to play BM1. What is Starforce3?

Re: Black Mirror 1 - 05/07/11 10:40 PM

StarForce 3 is a copy "protection" from the early 2000's that installs ring 0 drivers, which Windows 7 and Vista and many antivirus will block. Current versions of StarForce don't do that, but that doesn't help with old games that have the older version. Result is that you can't play the game without the NoCD if you have a recent computer.

Since you've already tried to play the game, and you have XP, you'll have to uninstall the StarForce drivers. The StarForce uninstaller is ***here***. Unzip it and then run it to remove the drivers. Hopefully it will do a clean job.

Then do a Google search for
Black Mirror NoCD
to find the NoCD patch.

Many thanks for your help. I've tried what you say but am still getting the same message "Theat detected trojan"
Looks like this game will just be a memory. wave

Following this thread, I have a question. Oldlady says that she's played this game before. Is it possible for a Trojan to have set up shop on the game disk while she was playing it without affecting her computer, assuming she is always connected to the Internet?

No, optical disc's used to distribute software can't be written to.

So, oldlady could disconnect from the Internet because she'd want to disable her AVG since it's getting in the way and (assuming Starforce is not a problem) be able to play the game? It may be the long way round but would it work for her?

It should work - but adding the program to AVG's exception list is a better solution.

Many, many thanks for all your help folks. I've tried all your suggesions but nothing seems to help and I have decided that life is too short and am throwing in the towel. Again, my thanks for your time.
