According to the system requirements, you can - but it looks like you'll need DVD MPG4 to play the movies.

System Requirements
OS: Windows 8, 7, Vista
CPU: core 2 duo 2 GHz processor
Memory: 2 GB RAM
GPU : video card with 256MB VRAM
Free Disk Space: 1 GB
Known Issues
Needs DVD mpeg4 to run the in-game movies on Windows XP

Of course there is. Have you already bought the game? If so check out the Read Me file in the games folder...or read this...

ยค If you try the game on windows XP, you may need a DVD Mpeg4
codec to play the videos (try ffmpeg).

I had to do this on my XP since I couldn't see the opening video. There are many of these free on the net. I found one that worked for me called ffdshow. I restarted my computer and all was fine.

There is also this about NVidia but I didn't have this problem with my NVidia...

Quote:
NVIDIA ISSUE
----------------------------------------------------------------

If the in-game movies are brighter than the static pictures, and if you
are equiped with an Nvidia video card, try the following :

- open the Nvidia Cpanel : a right click on your desktop should show it.
- click on the Video/Video colors settings.
- choose 2. With the Nvidia parameters.
- go in the advanced tab.
- change the dynamic range from 16-235 to 0-255.

By default, the nvidia drivers play movies with light greys instead
of pure whites (the RGB value was 016 instead of 000) and dark greys
instead of pure blacks (the RGB value was 235 instead of 255).

Re: Help A.S.A. - A Space Adventure get on Steam Greenlight - 01/29/13 09:19 PM

After reading Greyfuss's glowing recommendation and watching the game video, I immediately purchased A.S.A. from Indievania. (Thanks Greyfuss and Simon!) I would have preferred GOG but couldn't wait. smile I received download links for files from Indievania that are named "Simon Mesnard/ASAr1.zip" and "Simon Mesnard ASAr1.z01...11." These files do not unZip. I get an error message that says: "WinZip Please insert disk number 1 of the spanned Zip file into C."

I did place the eleven z01...z011 files into C and still received the same error message. I also placed all the folders into a single folder and still got the same error. The files are all inaccessible. A puzzle before the game! Has to be good.

Greyfuss, since you installed and played the game, do you have any ideas or have seen this? I wrote to Indievania and Simon but haven't heard from either.

Thanks and best regards, Jesse.

Re: Help A.S.A. - A Space Adventure get on Steam Greenlight - 01/29/13 10:00 PM

Drummerboy

I downloaded from the games web site and received one zipped file with no problem unzipping and installing. I have read of others that used the Indievania site having the same problem. This is what Simon told them...

Quote:
About indievania :
the fact that the game is split in 12 parts is not due to them, so don't go thinking indievania is bad.
I am the one who had to upload it in 12 parts, because of my bad internet connexion...

Sorry for that...

And here is what another had to do after using the Indievania site...

Quote:
Download is a clumsy process: 11 files + 1 zip file. I got a few errors on initial DL and needed to re-download 4 files. Still getting error trying to extract into a single install archive per directions

Solved. It didn't like 7zip app, so re-installed latest winzip and everything is cool. It's VERY rare 7zip is not up to the task - much better than winzip, but at least I got it installed. Wish the DL was a single exe... ASA intro,s as beguiling as I've seen for a long time...

Don't forget to also download and install the patch. For anyone else reading this I would suggest you download straight from the games web site and not use Indievania,

Re: Help A.S.A. - A Space Adventure get on Steam Greenlight - 01/30/13 02:41 AM

Thanks Greyfuss.

Unfortunately I tried WinRar, which should have been used for large files in the first place, and I downloaded the newest WinZip (trial version, not spending $85 to extract the game). I keep getting error messages and .z01 is looking for .z02, .zo2 is looking for .z03, etc., and they're right next to each other in the same folder.

I have no idea what to do next. I looked for solutions online and didn't find anything that worked. I need a walkthrough for what to do with WinZip because this is a big PITA smile It's too complicated a process. No game should have to make you search the web or spend 4 hours trying every method listed.

I should have waited for GOG because they make it easy. This is fruitless and now I have to go back to PayPal for a refund. (Simon and Indievania never wrote back - great support.)

Sorry that I sound like a crab but I really don't have time for this nonsense.

Best, Jesse.

Geesh Drummerboy, take a chill pill. I know you must be frustrated but give the guy a break. He is one man not some big company with a Support department and this is his first game. Furthermore he is in France and not on NY time. Give him some more time to respond. What email did you use?

Re: Help A.S.A. - A Space Adventure get on Steam Greenlight - 01/30/13 02:49 PM

There was a confirmation e-mail with a direct e-mail to Simon.

There are many good ways to create a downloadable .exe file + games files - this is not one of them.

I sent two e-mails - one to Simon, one to Indievania several days ago. I would expect a response, wouldn't you? At least an acknowledgement e-mail that someone is looking into this.

Anyway, I'd like to close this issue. I'll wait for the game to have better support.

Re: Help A.S.A. - A Space Adventure get on Steam Greenlight - 01/30/13 05:09 PM

Didn't the developer say he had to break up the game into several pieces because he had such a bad Internet connection and couldn't upload the whole game all in one piece? If any of the files are bad downloads -- the .z01, z02, z03, etc. files -- the game won't find that file when it's in the process of joining files. You have to re-download the file it can't find.

If the place you bought it from only gives you limited downloads, that can be a problem.

Re: Help A.S.A. - A Space Adventure get on Steam Greenlight - 01/30/13 07:35 PM

I am curious as to Drummerboys problem and for the sake of others who have already read this and to help them or for them to help us its probably best to look into this rather than leave a bad taste for the game.

If by reading Tincups post at JA (quoted above) there were 11 files and one zip file downloaded from Indievania. I am no techie when it comes to computer stuff and I have not read the directions from Indievania but wouldn't one just create a file on their Desktop (or anywhere they chose) download the 11 files and one zip file to it. Then use Winzip to unzip the one zipfile and it will unpack everything? After rereading Drummerboys post it looks as if he may have only downloaded 11 files, maybe the 12th zipfile didn't download or they didn't see where it went.

I will drop Simon a message in hopes that he will visit here and shed some light on this.

Re: Help A.S.A. - A Space Adventure get on Steam Greenlight - 01/30/13 10:00 PM

Hi everyone,
I just read this thread and finally found time to answer. I'm quite busy, ASA is not my single project, and I'm **trying** to have a life too... I'm sorry but it's hard for me to be on various english and french forums, but I'm doing my best to help everyone. Just give me some time ! wink It's better to send me a mail in case of problem, you can find my address on my website : simonmesnard.fr

This afternoon, I had an email from drummerboy and that was the first time we could really get in touch directly. For some unknown reason I had never received the previous mails which explained the problem; if I had received them I would have tried to help much faster... but I believe (and hope) we found a way to make peace : I sent drummerboy a new download link to get the game in one single zip file after refunding his account.

About the problem of multi-files on indievania, I'm trying to fix this by uploading a new single file to replace the current ones. This is slowing down my already slow internet connexion so I won't be that much on the forums these days. It will take around 3 or 4 days maybe, and this is quite a problem for me to work in this situation.
At least, I hope it will help everyone who had troubles to download the files.

Re: Help A.S.A. - A Space Adventure get on Steam Greenlight - 01/31/13 02:48 AM

Yes, Simon helped me immensely. He didn't get any correspondence from Indievania that I sent, plus his contact was given to me by the PayPal acknowledgement. Maybe it was in error?

Anyway, Simon put together a file for me, it downloaded and installed perfectly and is running like a charm (I replied to Simon). I really appreciate Simon's help and I didn't want to give him the impression that I'm not gonna love the game. Very intriguing intro indeed!

Again, thanks to Simon and Greyfuss all for getting the game to me.

You are welcome for sure Drummerboy. I am just happy that the bad taste is gone and you can now enjoy this great production.

Re: Help A.S.A. - A Space Adventure get on Steam Greenlight - 01/31/13 10:47 AM

I'm glad that we could find a way to help you drummerboy. I hope other people won't have the same bad experience and I'll do my best to avoid that.

BTW, the upload of the single-file on indievania failed last night... I have to start it over from the beginning. It's using Amazon S3 cloud service : do you know if I can resume an upload when it fails with this service, or if I have to start again everytime ??? This is the very reason why I had uploaded ASA in 12 smaller files on indievania : I just can't send the single big file without trouble.

Re: Help A.S.A. - A Space Adventure get on Steam Greenlight - 01/31/13 02:22 PM

I haven't used Amazon S3, so what I'm saying is just from Googling information.

Although Amazon S3 seems capable of doing pause and resume, I don't know if it's capable of an automatic pause if it's erroring due to a broken internet connection.

According to this
http://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2010/11/10/Amazon-S3-Introducing-Multipart-Upload/
Amazon S3 has a "multipart upload" that allows you upload a single "object" as a set of parts. You seem to be able to eventually upload the files as parts, but you may already be using this feature.

These instructions
http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/API/mpUploadComplete.html
talk about assembling previously uploaded parts.
It also says "if Complete Multipart Upload fails, applications should be prepared to retry the failed requests" and gives a link to
http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/dev/ErrorBestPractices.html

That page has a link to a forum where you might be able to get tips from the developers of Amazon S3.
https://forums.aws.amazon.com/forum.jspa?forumID=24

How large is the upload?

Re: Help A.S.A. - A Space Adventure get on Steam Greenlight - 01/31/13 07:28 PM

Thanks Jenny, unfortunately it doesn't seem to resume in my case after the internet connexion fails.

The file is 1GB, which is not THAT big, but it's big when you have internet problems laugh

I'm interested in the option to assemble the already uploaded parts !
If the current upload fails again, I'll try this !

For now, it's 28% of the single file that is uploaded, so I prefer to wait quietely without disturbing my PC and the connexion ^^

Still couldn't upload the single file on indievania (operation fails again and again)
BUT !
The game has just been reviewed on Adventure Gamers and got 4 stars out of 5 !
