Download problem

Download problem - 01/12/14 09:58 PM

I've not been able to download anything for a few weeks now - games or anything else - pretty sure it's connected to a Windows upgrade that recently installed. All was well before that

Everything works perfectly - games that were downloaded recently are sitting on my desktop and running smoothly. But on the long long list of purchases, nothing will download

Had some conversations with Big Fish early on, but decided the problem was not with Big Fish.

I ran a full scan with my McAfee antivirus and it came out clean. Then thought I'd go with Malware, but, guess what, couldn't download it

A positive side effect is that I'm saving lots of money by not buying games. Reading a lot more now - on my Kindle

I tried to get some remote service from a local organization, but that required a download of the program to allow it. Ho hum, what a conundrum - anyhow one of their techies is coming here next week to work on it.

Has anyone here had experience with that kind of problem?

Janice, this may not help, but who knows. I recently had a similar issue, mainly with not being able to download from Steam--that was the thing I was trying to do. This was on my desktop. I had been able to download on my laptop with no issues.

Well, I tried several things including uninstalling Steam. What a mess I made! Finally, after reading several forum posts, I ran across some references to a Windows wireless adapter update that was causing people download problems. It was suggested to roll back that driver update to the previous one and go directly to the wireless adapter manufacturer for the driver, not Windows Update. I remembered that I had indeed installed a Windows update for my USB wireless adapter. I got rid of the Windows update, installed the suggested manufacturer driver, and my problem was resolved.

The adapter I was using was a TRENDnet TEW-664UB N600 Dual Band.

menahune...Try doing a system restore before you downloaded an update

Sometimes updates can clash with other programs....I Had a similar problem with Avast virus program...

Is there a specific error message and what browser are you using?

For my problem, I had tried a system restore before I figured out the issue. It didn't help me. I had done that adapter update too long ago I think.

It was really weird. I could browse the internet, but large downloads didn't work. Unfortunately, I didn't discover the issue for a while because I wasn't doing those kinds of downloads until recently, so I never connected the current problem with a past update.

Janice, good luck trying to track your issue! I can relate to how frustrating these things can get. smashpc

Hi Lanlynk

thanks for the tip. I searched thru some recent Windows updates, but found nothing helpful there. Eventually I came to an IE 11 update, and when I uninstalled that one, everything got back to normal. Yeaaa

Don't know how that IE update got there ???

anyway, thanks again.

Yep, I've had a few headaches with IE 11 as well. Most of them have been resolved now, so I left the update applied.

Janice, glad your issue is taken care of. I think this is why troubleshooting computers, as for all complex machines, can be so difficult. The problem could stem from who-knows-what! Any update or change can throw things off. And sometimes it's the least likely suspect--in the meantime, we chase after red herrings! HA!

InlandAZ, I've finally started using Chrome as my default browser after using IE for years. And it's because I got tired of trying to figure out what ailed IE this time! And if Chrome gives me a problem, I open up Firefox. I still use IE now and then too. Three browsers. <shakes head> Maybe the major websites are now beginning to resolve the conflicts with update changes?

Yep, it takes web sites time to modify scripting languages and such when browser versions change - It's a pain, but they generally get them resolved quick enough.

menahune you got the update because your Windows updater is set to automatically download and install available updates. You can go into the Action Center and change this setting so you decide if/when updates are downloaded and installed.
