I know there used to be free antivirus programs that worked fairly well. Do any of them still exist? I'm looking to use it on a computer that is not used very frequently.

There are plenty of free antivirus.
Security Essentials from Microsoft is free.
These have free versions
Avast
AVG
Comodo
etc.
Any of those sound familiar
