New graphics card giving me problems

New graphics card giving me problems - 04/24/15 03:41 PM

So, I installed the new graphics card. But for some reason I either get a black screen now and then, when playing World of Tanks or the computer/graphic card hangs. It has happened a few times now and it's getting really irritating. Any ideas about what the cause of the problem might be?

Just a few ideas...

Make sure your power supply is adequate to support the new card.
What model is the new card? It may draw more power than your old card, and if the power supply can't supply enough power, it can cause the black screen.

If the new card creates more heat than your old card, you may have to install an additional case fan. Graphics problems can be caused by heat.

What wattage and brand is your power supply, and how old is it?
In my experience, power supplies are second only to hard drives in the "stuff that wears out with age" category.

If you don't see these problems in other games that have similar requirements to World of Tanks, there could also be a driver issue specific to World of Tanks and your particular card -- and a different version of the video drivers might help.

Edit -- Are the cards in ***this post*** the ones you're referring? Replacing the GTX 560 with an ASUS GeForce GTX 770 4GB?

Yeah, I replaced the 560 Ti with the GTX 770 4GB (even installed the latest drivers from Nvidia), and I have a Cooler Master 750W PSU. I even checked if all the power cables are connected right, which they are. I even tried playing some other games (Skyrim, Cities: Skyline and Tomb Raider) and they work just fine.

Edit: Just did a reinstall of the game and it seems to work correctly now. And I spoke to soon, tried to go back into the game (ALT + TAB) and got a black hanging screen.

Did some checking around, and it seems that there are others with the same problem here

Sounds like your graphics card is "normal" then, since others are having issues with the same model -- either a bug in the model or a conflict with the Geforce drivers -- or possibly a bad batch of some part that is used in manufacture of the cards.

You might want to try monitoring your graphics card temperatures while you play World of Tanks. Maybe the card tends to run hotter with World of Tanks than with other games.

You might check to make sure the fans on the card itself are turning.

There might be a driver version (possibly an older one) that works better with World of Tanks.

Or you could try reducing the resolution of the game and see if that helps.
One of the people who posted in the ***thread you found*** (B1acksh33p) said that helped.

But honestly, if it was me, I'd consider sending it back.

I'd be very frustrated to pay a lot for a graphics card and have it do this with games I wanted to play. And apparently Nvidia has little interest in fixing the problem (or isn't able to) because it's still happening. If the problem is due to a defective component, and not all cards are affected, they'll probably never fix it.

I'm sorry I wasn't aware of the problem with this model when you were asking about which card to get, and apparently no one else here was either.

The issue also seems to happen in cards from different manufacturers. I saw EVGA, ASUS and Gigabyte mentioned, so it's got to be an Nvidia problem. And the issues go way back into last year, so it's looking like Nvidia isn't solving the problem at all.

It seems like the card is running hotter when just starting up World of Tanks -- GPU temperatures

If that's saying it increased from 26°C to 42° or 43°C, that's still not very hot for a video card, and shouldn't cause the problems.

So I'm guessing either drivers, or some internal component of the card not functioning as it was designed to.

Seems like rolling back the driver to the older 344.48 driver solved the black hanging screen.

344.48 seems to be from October 2014.
It looks like they fixed the issue, then caused it again in newer drivers.

Glad you found a working set of drivers though.
