There is some good advice and tech help here, Darleen. http://www.techradar.com/news/software/o...dows-10-1290644
Think I'll give it a try just on my laptop not on my pc, can easily re-install windows 7 if its too buggy! woozy

That link is for one of the earlier Technical Preview versions. But there might be some things in there to consider.

If you don't have Windows 8.1, do some research first. Your Windows 7 will be supported until 2020. But consider how far behind you will be if you don't move forward sooner or later. This will be the last time you will be able to upgrade for free with a Windows 7 installation. I'm not going to upgrade several of my people as they are in their 80's and Windows 7 is working just fine for them. But there are quite a few others that I am going to recommend they upgrade.

Drac.. I got a notice also giving you the option when 10 releases to upgrade.. full version... I am on my surface pro 3 but I am holding off on the desktop as I am concerned about the older hp 7310 all in one printer... if they provide drives I might..
bottom right side of windows.. a microsoft window icon appears... click on it
Edit
I just received an answer to my question to HP support... will they be providing windows 10 drivers.. he said "yes" so I will probably go to 10... what the heck!

I've already "signed up" for it too. So far I haven't seen anything I don't like about it... so far. I checked for driver support on my old 5 year old printer too and they said yes.

I looked at this article and I didn't see anything that I liked or care about at all! Just makes it sound like they're making a big cell phone. I don't even use a cell phone, well almost never and it is a very old type cell phone that I inherited.

Windows 98 had wonderful screensavers, as I recall. smile

I've signed up for Windows 10 too. Being on Windows 7 at the moment, I'm glad that all my programs and files will be carried over with the upgrade, and I won't have to reinstall anything, because that's always a pain in the cahooey.

That brings back memories! I dearly loved my Windows 98 and 98SE and hated XP. In fact, I resisted moving to XP for many years because I hated the way it looked and worked.

Windows 95 and 98 were and still are the best for games from the late 1990's.
Windows 3.1 is the first version of Windows I used though.

Ahhhh the good old DOS days ! To run a game you had to work off a command prompt ! go to your C: drive then dir to see your directories\files - then go to C:\sierra dir then......... oh well - this could take some time .... all kidding aside, I am partial to Windows 7 right now and, as a tech person, I am anxious to see how Windows 10 handles things. If it passes, then I make the switch, if not, I still have my Win 7 to work with and wait for the string of service packs to "fix" Windows 10. rotfl

Download the Insider Preview, and load it up under VMware Player - If you're anything like me, you're going to wonder what Microsoft has been smoking lately smile Is it better than Windows 8, somewhat... But they still seem fixated on turning the desktop environment into a tablet experience (and I for 1 can't stand it).

My opnion is that a I need s apsm remover that remopve the unwanted advertisement Microsoft stuck on my tool bar without asking if I wanted it. Which I don't. I purposly bought a Windows 7 syster, why the hell would I want Windows 10?
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Windows 10 is coming ... - 06/03/15 05:27 AM

All you need to do is click on the up arrow for your hidden icons, select Customize and select Hide Notifications. No spam there...
Posted By: GuybrushThreepwood

Re: Windows 10 is coming ... - 06/03/15 11:10 AM

But all that does is hide it. The program still runs, taking up memory. I found out how to get rid of it. You have to remove update KB3035583 which doesn't actually do anything but add this ad. And it is spam when when you didn't ask for it. And they sneak it in pretending its an system update. Removing that update gets rid of GWX.exe which is the program (Get Windows 10).

"But they still seem fixated on turning the desktop environment into a tablet experience (and I for 1 can't stand it)."

My sentiments exactly, InlandAZ yes

I have Win98SE, WinXP and Win7 all working fine - all of which I really like smile

I don't like tablets. [The only one I permit myself to own is a "passed me down" original version iPad.]

I certainly don't want to have to learn how to use a new operating system that behaves like one !! lol

The only problem is, in five years time we'll all have to, whether we like it or not (at least, if we want to be secure whilst online), when security updates for Windows 7 end.

The upside is, that's still five years away. grin

Re: Windows 10 is coming ... - 06/03/15 03:49 PM

I can't say it any better than Inland did.
They'd get more takers if they made it look like XP.

And apparently I need to make sure I don't have update KB3035583 installed. After Guybrush's post, I found this
http://winsupersite.com/windows-10/how-stop-windows-10-upgrade-downloading-your-system

Quote:
In preparation for that, back in April, Microsoft released an update (KB3035583) for Windows 7 (Optional) and 8.1 (Recommended) that is called the Get Windows 10 app. It provides the prompt that started appearing on users systems (Windows 7 and 8.1) yesterday and gives you the option to reserve your copy of Windows 10.

I'm unsure whether even updating Windows 8.1 is a good idea. With 3rd party add-ons, Windows 8.1 at least looks like Windows 7, though some games (Still Life, Post Mortem) don't work and I'm sure those aren't the only two.

Re: Windows 10 is coming ... - 06/03/15 07:43 PM

Thanks Jenny.
I followed the instructions through the link and it worked fine.
I just checked my windows updates again and the same update showed up again.
I just hid it this time instead of installing it again.

"All you need to do is click on the up arrow for your hidden icons, select Customize and select Hide Notifications. No spam there..."

When I did this, it came back the next day when I turned my computer on again. (Well, I think it said only show notifications (no icon), but the icon came back anyway.)

You should have selected "hide icon and notifications." But go ahead and do what Jenny suggested.

Well in another five years I could very well have become "doolally" and "computer non-competent" from trying to solve too many PC games - so I'm not worrying for the moment rotfl

Re: Windows 10 is coming ... - 06/04/15 02:41 PM

I had to kid of grin when I read that from Marian! It makes me wonder if I'm being unfair to all my older people in their 80's and a few of my less computer literate folks by leaving them on Windows 7! Am I assuming they will all be "doolally" by 2020? lol

And then I wonder if I'm just making more work for myself because I will have to slowly teach them all to use whatever version of Windows 10 is out there... Right now, I can set Windows 8.1 up to look and act just like Windows 7 with no need to ever see the tiled Start screen ever. And the new Windows 10 has done away with that Start screen totally. Hmmm... maybe I'd better rethink this! woozy

Re: Windows 10 is coming ... - 06/04/15 03:37 PM

KB3035583 was included with security updates on my Windows 7 computer.
After uninstalling it, it returned to the Windows update list, and I "hid" it.

But it was under "Optional" updates on my Windows 8.1 computer.
Not sure it's that way for everyone though.

Re: Windows 10 is coming ... - 06/04/15 03:48 PM

I don't have this update (Win7) but I don't download "Optional" updates - so that must be why yes

Originally Posted By: Mad

It was only "Optional" on my Windows 8.1 installation.
It was "Recommended"/"Important" on my Windows 7, and installed along with "Critical" updates in Windows Update.

It may currently be "Optional" for you, but I wouldn't depend on it staying that way. If you see it listed as "Optional" in your Windows Update, use the "hide" feature. (I assume you're using manual install for Windows updates rather than automatic).

========================

It's no easy task to find KB3035583 in the list of installed updates.
Even if you click "Name" in your list of installed updates to sort them, they seem to be listed in separate sections.
If you have MS Office installed the way I do, there are a lot of separate sections to check.

=========================

I can't say I'll never use Windows 10, but I'm certainly not going to beta test it for Microsoft, especially if it means sacrificing a working operating system in the process. I have every reason to believe there will be games that won't work on Windows 10 that worked on Windows 8 and earlier, just as there were games that worked on Windows 7 but not on Windows 8, and games that worked on XP that don't work on Windows 7.

And I wouldn't use it without the capability to change the Start Menu back to the Windows 7/Vista version.
I hate those space-eating blocks of garbage-that-looks-like-ads hanging off the side of the menu that you see in pictures of Windows 10 and 8.1.

Re: Windows 10 is coming ... - 06/04/15 07:10 PM

One thing I'm VERY glad of is that the stupid "Charms" menu on the right is gone, gone, gone. Hated the name - hated the menu - hated everything about it.

I also read this.

Re: Windows 10 is coming ... - 06/06/15 02:45 AM

Yes, you read correctly. I also read that if you have an OEM computer with a recovery partition for Windows 8 or Windows 7, it will not touch that partition. If you don't like Windows 10, you can activate your recovery partition and revert back to factory.

Re: Windows 10 is coming ... - 06/06/15 05:32 AM

Having a year to upgrade free will allow time for helpful gameboomers who install win10 earlier to see which of our games will play. The lists given for win7 were really helpful and appreciated.

I just found this paragraph which might explain why I don't see the update on my machine ?? [I have Win7 Enterprise.]

“It is our intent that most of these devices will qualify, but some hardware/software requirements apply and feature availability may vary by device. Devices must be connected to the internet and have Windows Update enabled. ISP fees may apply. Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 Update required.
Some editions are excluded: Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1.
Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise outside of this offer. We will be sharing more information and additional offer terms in coming months.”

You may be the only person in this forum who has the Enterprise version of Windows 7 on their home computer. It isn't usually an option and home users have to buy Windows Ultimate if they want the same functionality.

***Wikipedia*** says
Quote:
Enterprise customers under an active Software Assurance (SA) contract with Microsoft are entitled to obtain Windows 10 Enterprise under their existing terms, as with previous versions of Windows. Enterprise customers whose SA agreement is expired or are under a volume license that does not have upgrade rights, and all users running non-genuine copies of Windows, are not entitled to freely upgrade to Windows 10.

You probably don't have that "Software Assurance" contract. But from what Wiki says, those who do have it have always been able to upgrade to whatever was the latest version of Windows. Inland would probably know more about Enterprise versions of Windows.

Re: Windows 10 is coming ... - 06/06/15 05:22 PM

You can peruse the SA FAQ below -

Enterprise editions are only available through Volume Licensing agreements.

We talked about that earlier in this thread.
If you don't want to update to Windows 10, uninstall KB3035583, run Windows Update manually, and "hide" KB3035583 so it won't try to install in the future.

If you want Windows 10 but don't want the notification, do as Draclvr suggested...

Having run it since it was available for beta testing, I for one will not be. The only way this OS makes sense is if you own something with a touch screen (and even then, a cheap IOS tablet does a better job of it).

Steve Ballmer resigned (or was fired) from Microsoft for a reason, I believe it was his own incompetence (and that's putting it nicely), but that's just my $0.02.

Stick with XP or 7 for gaming for now, leave this one alone.

If you have a touch screen, and are comfortable with windows 8, you'll probably be okay with Windows 10. It's the desktop and Windows 7 users that will have a huge learning curve.

If you're signed up for it, it will install as part of the normal maintenance distribution.

It will not include any games or other software that you've installed yourself. If you have any games with a limited number of activations, those activations will be gone.

Ok People...

I have to chime in and tell you all ....Windows 10 is wonderful ! I was scared had a few problems getting it installed but only because of my Alien ware computer and my NVIDIA video card... Most computers should have no problems as I installed it on my husbands Dell Inspiron Laptop with no issues....
I am Very Happy with it... Very user friendly !
