Lost in the task bar in win 10

Lost in the task bar in win 10 - 06/29/16 02:20 PM

On my spare computer I updated to win 10 to see if I would like it or not and give it a "test run".

I was trying to make a clean update of my Nvidia Card so I uninstalled all Nvidia apps on my computer. I then ran chkdisk and it didn't run but it caused all my icons on the desktop to disappear.

Now I can't open any program at all. When I click on anything, settings, file explorer, device manager, Internet exporer etc etc, they all go to the task bar and I can't open them. The icons just stay on the task bar until I close them. When I right click or left click nothing happens. If I right click it shows me the options for that program but clicking on the options does nothing.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I assume a reboot didn't change anything? Is there any way you can get to Settings in the Start menu? If you can, you might try going to settings and then to Update and Security and Recovery. There is an option there to RESET the PC and you can choose to retain your files if you want.

No, everything goes to the task bar and won't open, including settings. I even tried to boot in safe mode by hitting restart + shift and all I got was a blank screen and after 30 minutes I turned the computer off.

I tried to use cortana to go to recovery but that just took me to settings which of course goes to task bar and an endless loop of frustration.

Running chkdsk shouldn't cause icons to disappear.
There's the possibility that the drive developed bad sectors.
The failure after "downgrading" to Windows 10 may be coincidental.

To check for bad sectors, you need to run
chkdsk /r
and reboot for it to run.
It can't do a thorough scan while Windows is running.

Make sure the mouse is working properly. A bad mouse button can cause clicks not to register properly. You may want to try a different mouse that you know is working properly.

There could also be a problem with a stuck keyboard key.

If none of this is the problem, there are instructions on how to go back to Windows 10 here

EDIT

If you're not able to boot properly, you may have to boot to a CD in order to run chkdsk. Do you have a Windows CD? If not, maybe you could create a Repair CD on your working computer.

May I suggest you check to see if your motherboard has a Nvidia chipset, when you uninstalled everything Nvidia you may have inadvertently uninstalled motherboard drivers.

well somehow I got chkdsk to run. I used Corana to run it then I restarted windows and while it indicated that I needed repair. I'm not sure of the steps but somewhere along the line I was brought to a page where I could select troubleshoot and then later was given the option to reboot or reinstall or whatever the terminology was but I clicked yes and after a couple of hours I now have windows 10 again with some apps missing but it also gave me a list of the removed applications.

So I don't know how but I'm back with windows 10 again and have installed the Nvidia driver and all seems well with the world.

Thanks for the help cause I would have given up had I not had advice to keep plugging along with.

Oh well, on to the next disaster. lol evil scared

Some days, you just have to keep plugging along and then shake your head and give up trying to figure out what really happened. As they say, 'Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.'
