Dreamfall Chapters (was using steam) - 09/25/16 05:33 PM

Hi,all. I want to get Dreamfall chapters but I've never used Steam. Can someone suggest how I should do that? Is that the only/best option. I read that they can cancel all of your games at any time. Can I only download steam or do I have to join? Thanks, Louis.

Louis, I'm far from an expert, but I use Steam for a couple of games. I had to download their "manager" and then you start games through that. There is an "offline" option, but I've never used it.

I am far from an expert, but assume that the "cancel all your games" would only come if you were banned for some egregious action as that would not be in their own best business interest. I could be wrong.

I know we have folks who won't use Steam at all, but I haven't had any problems with the limited use I do.

Hi Louis,

I don't believe that steam can cancel all your games - just like any other download site like GOG or Humble or Zodiac, etc...

As to how to use Steam: check this description.
- open the browser to steam site. Best let you read...
Good luck.
PS I am a steam member also.

There are certainly other places that sell Dreamfall Chapters, if that's what you're asking.
Humble sells Dreamfall Chapters and has the option for either a direct download or a Steam key.
https://www.humblebundle.com/store/dreamfall-chapters

Humble is currently having a half off sale right now (only $14.99), so Humble might be your best option whether you want to access the game through Steam or not (Humble gives you the choice).

GOG sells it
https://www.gog.com/game/dreamfall_chapters_season_pass
or
https://www.gog.com/game/dreamfall_chapters_season_pass_special_edition
if you want the special edition

You have to join and you have to install their game manager (the Steam client).
They don't normally cancel your games unless you are caught doing illegal activities (or someone hijacks your account and does the illegal activities in your name).

Well, I bought dreamfall chapters, clicked Windows, direct link and 64 bit and ....nothings happening. I downloaded Torrent R/T Free Plus. Keep checking but everything is at 0% and the download time "remaining" is a ? .Are they closed? Should I wait until tomorrow to download? I created an account at Humble Bundle. Help...

I don't think that the time of day is relevant, although I haven't used Humble Bundle.

Let's wait and see if someone can give you some advice.

I will move this to Discussion forum. More gamers that use Humble go there.

Thanks MaG. I'm so new at this type of game purchasing. In the past I've won a couple of gameboomer challenges and simply clicked on the link in my e-mail and BAM! the game loaded with absolutely no issues. Oh how I miss those days.

Don't use the torrent.
Use the direct download of the entire game.
I've never had trouble with Humble's direct downloads.

Re: Dreamfall Chapters (was using steam) - 09/26/16 03:36 PM

I extracted the files clicked on "run anyway" and now I get the message "windows cannot access the specified device path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item". I tried running as administrator with same results. Now I'm getting a restart computer to neutralize the item message for an infection. This is crazy.

Re: Dreamfall Chapters (was using steam) - 09/26/16 03:46 PM

You need to download the entire installation file before running it. It's a huge download (currently 7.7 GB) and can't be run directly through your web browser. If you're not able to download the file using IE, use a different web browser.

Make sure you're using the 64-bit download if you're using 64-bit Windows (and the 32-bit download if you're using 32-bit Windows)

I don't understand why you're getting a message about an infection unless it's just a generic message being applied to all downloaded files. If the message is from an antivirus, which antivirus do you have?

Re: Dreamfall Chapters (was using steam) - 09/26/16 03:52 PM

It took 7 hours to download. I went to bed woke up and there had been an interruption in downloading. I hit "continue" the game finished downloading, I extracted the files. I have Panda cloud as my anti virus.

Re: Dreamfall Chapters (was using steam) - 09/26/16 03:58 PM

It's possible the download was damaged when it was interrupted. You should probably check the md5 of the file to see if the download is OK. The md5's are posted at the Humble download page --

32-bit version -- 22fdbfce9dfee9f9d4e27e3015c674db

64-bit version -- bcd8716cd385de79f6631c6d82d08437

Though using a torrent solves the problem with broken downloads, some ISP's block the default torrent ports, and you also need other people seeding the file. For whatever reason, the torrent wasn't working for you.

EDIT -------

I downloaded the 64-bit version and it looks like there are 7 files inside that zip...

Is this similar to what you got when you extracted the Dreamfall zip you downloaded?

If it is, the problem may be Panda rather than a broken download. You could try setting Panda to ignore the Dreamfall files. I found instructions here...

Re: Dreamfall Chapters (was using steam) - 09/26/16 10:26 PM

The only difference is that mine says Dreamfall Chapters {application). There is no .exe after it. Everything else is the same. I also re-downloaded it. Took about 1 and 1/4 hour.

Re: Dreamfall Chapters (was using steam) - 09/26/16 10:42 PM

When I looked at the properties it actually does say Dreamfall Chapters .exe. Perhaps I should try disabling Panda Cloud. I just purchased this laptop (MSI gt72vr 6re) so I need to learn how to use it. Windows 10 is very confusing to me. I noticed that I have Windows Defender so do I even need Panda Cloud. Should I uninstall it?

Re: Dreamfall Chapters (was using steam) - 09/26/16 11:46 PM

I've used Windows 10, but I don't have any experience playing games on it.

If your laptop looks like ***this***, it should meet the requirements for the game.

I don't know if Panda Cloud could be interfering with the game or with Defender. But you could try disabling it and see if that makes a difference.

Also try moving the game files to a folder in your user's Documents folder before running the .exe.

Wow! Jenny100 you were right. As soon as I disabled Panda everything worked. Thanks everyone and you Jenny for showing me humble bundle and having patience with me. I will go there again now that I know what to do. You're the best, Louis.

I'm glad to hear you were successful.
Thanks for the info about Panda interfering with your game.
Good to know in case someone else with Panda has a problem running a game.
