Windows Updates questions - 07/12/17 01:15 AM

Some new updates are available today. One of them is KB2952664 which was one of the ones that I hid last year when all the Windows 10 stuff was happening. Is it different now and should it be installed?

Also there is one from a couple of weeks ago showing as important but it's not checked to install. It is KB3186497. It seems to me all the ones marked important were installing without me having to check the boxes. Should it be installed?

And, since I'm in here asking, there is an optional one from a couple of weeks ago for a Creative Media driver update. I don't know what Creative Media is or if I have it. There was one in December I did not do anything with. Should I be installing this latest one?

Thank you for your help with this.

Since I don't remember, do you have Windows 10?

If not, then I found this... The is no update functionality as the free upgrade is no longer available. So if you don't have it, it all depends on whether you want to participate. If it were me, I would not install it on a Windows 7 computer.

Quote:
This update performs diagnostics on the Windows systems that participate in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program. The diagnostics evaluate compatibility on the Windows ecosystem and help Microsoft to ensure application and device compatibility for all updates to Windows. There is no GWX or upgrade functionality contained in this update.

I found some info, so edited my post above. Do you have a Creative sound card? That might be what the Creative media driver is. I don't allow Windows to install any driver updates - I only get them from the manufacturer's website.

I had read that but, you know, it meant nothing to me. Glad you understand it. I will uncheck that one.

What do you think about those other two?

The other one is a .NET framework update. I would install that one.

Ah yes. Creative SoundBlaster Z. I guess I should have known that. Will keep that unchecked and will check the .NET. Don't know why it wasn't automatically checked as it is listed as "important".

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!

Regarding the Soundblaster driver if your sound card is working don't install it unless you know exactly what changes it will create.

A few years ago I updated a SB driver and it removed my ability to "Record What U Hear" It seems that function is built into the driver. It took months to correct that issue. Essentially I had to uninstall my sound card locate an old driver and install that one to get back to where I was. The lesson learned proves the truth in that old axiom if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Thanks for the info oldmariner. I did not do any update to my SoundBlaster driver. Just bookmarked the page Draclvr linked to.
