new gaming laptop - 07/22/17 12:45 AM

I'm shopping for a new laptop and I can't decide what kind of storage drives to get. I know I want one drive to be an SSD of at least 256GB. I also want to add a second drive, but I'm not sure if it should be a HDD or a hybrid. The second drive will mainly be for data storage and the OS and programs will be on the SSD. So I'm not sure if I really need the SS feature of the hybrid if it's just for data or if a regular HDD would be all I need. Advice? Opinions? Thanks!

Is this laptop going to be moved around or is it just going to be sitting on the table all day? If it's going to be moved around, consider using SSD's for both drives.

I don't see any advantage of having a hybrid drive for storage. If you're going to be storing huge amounts of data, you might want a regular hard drive because of the higher cost of SSD's.

Thanks for your input Jenny. It won't be moved around at all. Just around the house occasionally. I really like the SSD for faster boot and shutdowns, so I'm willing to spend the money on that. I have a 256GB SSD and a 500GB HDD on my old laptop and both are over half full so I really want to increase the size for data on my next one. I like to have plenty of room. But,I wasn't sure if I really needed the hybrid for data. Does it speed up access to data? If so, is the speed that noticeable or worth the extra money? I'm thinking maybe a 1TB HDD is what I need for the second drive.

I've never used a hybrid drive so I don't know if the speed would be noticeable. According to Wikipedia, there are different types of hybrid drives -- dual drive and SSHD.

I wasn't aware there are different types. I was looking at the SSHD. I think the SSD portion of it is really small, maybe just a few gigs. So ok, I think I've made up my mind. Thanks so much for you help Jenny!
