WIN-10 Start Screen

WIN-10 Start Screen - 09/28/17 06:21 PM

I turned on the win-10 machine and there was my complete name on the start screen. It was never there before. I don't know what changed but I don't want it there. Is there a way to get rid of it other than the regedit method I saw on line. Sometimes people know of an easy fix like there is to get rid of the password.

Do you mean the screen where you log in? or the screen that pops up when you click the Windows icon in the lower left of the screen (left side of the taskbar)?

I'm not finding much other than ***this Microsoft page***.

If your computer is set up to use a Microsoft account online, the screen where you log in will display different information than if your computer is set to use a "Local" account. Could that be why you're seeing a difference?

I assume you mean the log-in screen? Try logging out and logging back in... other than the Microsoft account or the local account that Jenny mentioned, I'm coming up blank here. You might check your accounts to see how they are listed.

I call it a start screen but its the first screen where you type your password. I wouldn't care if my first name was there but my last name is there also which I do not like. I am always buying and selling computers and I don't want my name there if I sell it.

You should probably scrub the hard drive (***DBAN*** or similar) and reinstall Windows before selling the computer if there is sensitive information on it.

But in the meantime, see if any of the information here helps get rid of the name displayed on the login screen.

For sure if you ever sell a computer scrub the hard drive or at a minimum delete your account. Personally, I scrub the drive completely as Jenny suggests.

Did you check in your accounts list to see how your account is listed? Did you try a reboot yet? Or logging out and then back in?

1). There is not sensitive info on it but Im sure the next owner wouldn't like my name blasted on the screen instead of theirs.
2). That method from Jenny100 is the regedit which I was trying to avoid.
3). Draclvr,I did many reboots.
4). The last thing I did before this happened was I went to the "Apps" store and got some free desktop background themes so I think that might be my Microsoft account name. How it decided to put its self on the log in screen I don't know. I don't know what my local account is right now. My head hurts.

Go to your accounts... Start/Settings/Accounts. That should tell you what you are signed in to. There will be an option to sign in with a local account instead. I have a feeling you're right - downloading the backgrounds probably left you signed in to the Microsoft account. I download from there all the time, but I usually just stay signed into my Microsoft account. You can always just delete that account later.

....also in accounts, if you scroll down to 'privacy' there is an option to turn off your account details (eg email address) on the sign in screen.

I think the only "easy" way to do that is to be logged into your Local Account instead of your Microsoft Account.

Exactly what I've been saying... Go to your accounts and see what account you are signed into.

I know.
I had the problem with Windows 8. I had to make a Microsoft account to get Windows Solitaire (which doesn't come with Windows 8 by default). I downloaded it, decided I didn't like that new version, and got rid of it. But next time I tried to log into Windows I was presented with the Microsoft Account login instead of my regular login. I had to go online and look for instructions on how to get my login back to normal (normal is the "Local" account). I certainly wasn't expecting a simple download of solitaire to make a change like that, and never downloaded anything from there again.

Well I got it back to "Normal". Just initials for name, no password sign-in, no email. Thanks for the help.

What did you end up doing,Geo?

I did what you said by switching accounts. I can tell you how to get rid of the password sign in if you want. How come the printing on this computer is so much smaller than the win-7 one?

Mine is the same on both my Windows 7 and my Windows 10 and since these drives are both in the same computer case, I'm using the same monitor. This is omething you can easily change by right clicking anywhere on the desktop and selecting Display Settings.
