Steam says to type DX9 into the launch game box but it doesn't work.
in the Hints thread, but what's being suggested in the above thread is not the "launch box" and you don't type "DX9" anywhere.
You add
-dx9

absolutely need the hyphen) to the target field of the game shortcut.
This is the fix that finally worked for me: Make a shortcut (right click on the game .exe and select "Create Shortcut"). Go to the shortcut's Properties (right click on it) and at the end of whatever's in the target field, add a space and then "-dx9". Now relaunch the game using the shortcut. Worked like a charm for me.
