My vote would be for a WD-External hard drive. They have worked great for me for many years.
Here is an example:(

You should know how to manipulate files in Windows Explorer.

I like the WD External hard drives too. I also use Carbonite for cloud backup.
For software, there are a lot of options. Acronis is usually rated pretty highly. It usually costs about $50. There are some decent free options out there too. I've used EaseUS Todo and a lot of people like Comodo.
What are you using right now that didn't work?

Oh, dear... Depending on how much data you have, that's going to take a lot of CDs. Even DVDs would be better because they hold more. What backup software are you using?

I don't know how much data you want to back up, but if you want to back up everything on your hard drive, and your hard drive is mostly full, then a USB external drive (like the WD brand drive mentioned earlier) would be easiest. The external hard drive should be at least as large as the hard drive you want to back up.
Usually a CD will hold 700 MB of data, which is smaller than most games are now.
Usually a single-sided DVD will hold 4.7 GB of data, which is between 6 and 7 times as much as a CD. Many of my modern games have installers that would take 3 or 4 DVD's to back up. For example, Tex Murphy: Tesla Effect takes 4 DVD's.
If you get a 1 TB USB external hard drive, that should hold more data than most people have on their hard drives, including gamers who back up their games -- approximately the equivalent of 212 DVD's (1000gb/4.7gb).
If all you want to back up is a few emails or a handful of photos, you could probably do that on DVD's. But if you back up games or movies, you are far better off using an external hard drive.
It's unlikely very many people could back up their hard drive to CD any more. Maybe it was possible back before year 2000, but not any more.

Here is an example of a backup drive
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a...00101-_-ProductI have three because I'm not very trusting of things digital. Items like family photos and videos are backed up on more than one drive, just in case. They are simple to use just plug in the usb cable that ships with the drive. One easy way is to simply copy and paste files and folders. Most of these drives come with a backup tool (program) that will backup your whole hard drive. But if you are interested in saving important stuff only then Copying and pasting those folders is simple enough then you'll know where you put them. The Newegg link is to give you an idea shop around somebody always has these things on sale. Tiger Direct is another reliable source. I find the backup drives are much more reliable than cd and dvd those disc have a habit of failing from time to time.
