Video Card Survey - 03/05/19 03:38 AM

Can I just ask what kind of video card you all have? Nvidia or Radeon?

I have had Radeon cards in my last 3 computers and feel kind of partial to them, however the XP I am using now has Nvidia and I dug out the information on my first computer (Win 98) and it had Nvidia, so I'm not sure why I seem to want Radeon. I don't suppose I would notice any difference if I didn't know what was in the computer, would I?

I recently looked on eCollege PC and they are only using Nvidia right now. I also see on Tom's Hardware that Nvidia seems to be the way to go. I'm hoping to get a new computer some time this year.

Just being curious!

Thanks.

I use Nvidia cards exclusively. Everyone has their preferences and I'm not sure one is necessarily better than another. If I compare similar ones in something like GPU Boss, the Nvidia card almost always outscore the Raedons though.

I usually get Radeon cards when I build a computer. They tend to give you more for the same amount of money. However if money is no object, the fastest cards are nVidia's Geforce top of the line cards. Another thing to consider is that some games are more stable, or run more smoothly using Geforce and some are more stable or run more smoothly using Radeon depending on the game.

One reason some people aren't happy with nVidia is because of the dirty trick they pulled with Geforce GTX 970 cards, claiming they were 4GB cards when all of the 4GB wasn't usable at the full speed. The GTX 970 can only fully utilize 3.5 GB of the 4 GB of video memory, and if you use all 4 GB the game slows down. Here are some articles about the problem.

Although all that happened back in 2015, it still leaves a nasty taste in many mouths concerning Nvidia.

Thanks Draclvr and Jenny100. I do hope other people will stop in here to say what they have and if it is their preferred card or they get whatever is in the computer they're looking at, at the time.

Over the years I have had both Nvidia and Radeon cards and really do not have a preference; I like them both.

I have Nvidia, that is the only type of video card I ever have had.

Personally, I don't think you can go wrong either way.

I'm sure not Draclvr, but I'm not sure why I seem to want a Radeon so I just got curious about what other people have and favor.

I too have used both Nvidia and Radeon cards in my computers.

I have always had my machines "custom built" but never bought the latest all singing all dancing version of any video card.

I much prefer to go for video cards that are new-ish but already well tested by gamers.

And "The Techies" here at Gameboomers are the people I trust for advice.

Can't beat 'em !!!! praise

Re: Video Card Survey - 03/06/19 05:18 PM

Thanks Mad. I have "chosen" 2 of the cards I've used (both Radeon) by checking them against others on sites shown here at Gameboomers. Never the very top of the line as those are always too expensive but, as you put it, "new-ish". I was happy with both of them. My XP (not the one I use now) had a Radeon card and I was happy with that one too, but that doesn't mean I am unhappy with the XP I do use now or with my '98 which both have/had Nvidia.

I think that I am a little put off by having to "choose" a certain one because that is the only one offered. (That is at eCollege PC). I am just beginning my search and am not in a huge hurry but time does seem to get past me without me realizing it. I'll see what else is out there before before deciding on anything. I think I'd really like to just stay local if I can and avoid shipping from anywhere.

My husband is a retired IT professional. He sticks with Nvidia.

I think eCollegePC is a relatively small shop, so they might do some customization for you beyond what they list on their website. If you want a Radeon card, you could email them and ask if they'd be willing to put in a Radeon card for you.

If you want more reason not to buy nVidia, check this video

I've seen plenty of recent articles on the subject of "now is not a good time to buy a computer."
So there is good reason not to be in a huge hurry.

Re: Video Card Survey - 03/07/19 06:27 PM

Thanks for that info Sparkle.

Thanks Jenny. I'm not really looking for a reason not to buy Nvidia (or Radeon). That's a pretty long video so I haven't watched it yet but I certainly will.

I just want to by a new computer this year that has Windows 10 on it. I emailed Mike from eCollege and inquired about the Radeon cards. I did not ask if he would get one for me, I just made a general inquiry about them. He said they had a lot of problems the last couple of years with the Radeons which is why they are only using Nvidia now.

I haven't read any of the articles about it not being a good time to buy a computer. Maybe I will google that to see what I find.

Re: Video Card Survey - 03/08/19 11:24 PM

I've had a few different kinds of cards over the years. From the Matrox millennium, and the Trident, to the amazing Voodoo 2, 3, and 5, and then over to ATi and Nvidia cards.
My current and last cards are Geforce (The 1060 and 760), and that's because of how poorly the Radeon I had before that worked. In the past I've usually gone with Radeon but now I'm probably going to stick to Geforce, unless AMD makes something amazing again.

Thanks for your input Overmann.

Jenny, that youtube video was interesting. Made me think of politics.
