Email - 10/17/19 03:36 AM

In my MSN program I can hover over the name in an incoming email to see the full email address. I cannot seem to do that with Outlook or Edge. Is there a way to have the whole email address show? I have not yet found out if I can get my MSN program on Windows 10 and I feel safer seeing the whole address at least by hovering or right clicking or something.

Re: Email - 10/17/19 05:06 AM

Do you mean the Outlook email program in the Office suite? Edge is the browser, not an email program.

I'm heading to bed, but what I'm finding is that the MSN email program is so old, it may no longer work. I have a full day tomorrow, so hopefully Jenny can help you.

I use several Outlook.com email addresses in addition to two Gmail email addresses and have no problems with them at all.

Re: Email - 10/17/19 05:14 AM

I Googled and found some info which seems to indicate there is no setting available to show the whole email address. There was some free app that can be used but I don't know if it is something that should be used. It's pretty stupid not to be able to see the whole address. Most of my phishing and junk goes to junk but now and then something slips through, like something that says Amazon but if you see the whole address it is some wacky bunch of letters from some other country.

Re: Email - 10/17/19 01:14 PM

I agree. I use that feature in my ancient old Windows Live Mail email program too. Sometimes I have to actually open the email first to be able to see the whole address. Of course, you don't click on anything, but then you can see it.

I would definitely NOT use a free app though... chances are it would be full of ads... or worse.

I only use Thunderbird email as an email client, and I seem to be able to see what a link points to by hovering over the link and looking down in the status bar.

From what I'm reading about Outlook email, it's supposed to display a tooltip-type box if you hover over a link, but some people have issues with the tooltip not appearing or appearing only for a split second.

I use Thunderbird too and checked mine and sure enough, I could see an entire email address in there too by hovering over it.

Re: Email - 10/17/19 03:46 PM

I can see the whole address once I've clicked on the email but then the email is already open which I would be trying to avoid. Is that a bad thing? I thought you shouldn't open these emails at all but maybe it's just don't click anywhere in the email?

Can you point me to the correct place for Thunderbird so I can take a look at it please? I see thunderbird.net and also see it under mozilla.

I really do like my old MSN. I think I need to call to see if I can use it on Win 10.

Thanks!

Don't open an email unless you know where it's from.
There are some emails that are made to automatically infect your computer as soon as you open them.
Even though there may be ways to configure email programs to prevent this, the default settings are to automatically infect the user and then blame them for opening the infected email.

You can get Thunderbird from https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/
There are optional add-ons you can add to it the way you can add add-ons to Firefox.

I'm not familiar with the MSN email client and can't help with it.

Re: Email - 10/17/19 05:17 PM

Thanks Jenny!

Do you set it up as IMAP, POP3, or Exchange? Are there going to be other things I won't know the answer to? If the Exchange, do I install that Owl add-on?

Re: Email - 10/17/19 05:59 PM

POP3 to receive email
SMTP to send email

Check the settings in your current email program.

Re: Email - 10/17/19 06:02 PM

Thanks.

Well, I don't know exactly what I did but that window asking for that choice got closed and I clicked on "get mail" and all my mail downloaded. The look of the program is much more like my MSN program, however, the full email addresses are not showing.

See if either of these help

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1197692

It's been so long I can't remember what I did to get email addresses in the "From" column.
Certainly links embedded in email messages should show what they link to in the status bar if you hover over them.

Re: Email - 10/17/19 06:51 PM

I have a "correspondents" column, but the email addresses don't show. To see them, I have to open up the email.

Re: Email - 10/17/19 06:53 PM

I'll take a look at those links a little later Jenny as I have some things to do right now before it gets any later. Maybe because it is linked to my Outlook program?

Draclvr, that defeats the purpose though. I don't want to open the emails without seeing the whole address.

Re: Email - 10/17/19 09:33 PM

Jenny, I found where it said to fix this but it didn't work. I'm not sure what I did wrong of course, but I closed the email and then reopened it and clicked on "inbox". When I do that or when I click on an email to read it, a tab opens up for Microsoft Outlook with options to sign in or try premium.

Oh, and when I close that window, at the bottom of the Thunderbird screen it says "authentication window was closed to early".

Oh well. I was able to delete a good number of messages easily. I can't seem to find an easy way in Outlook to delete a lot of items. I can only do it one at a time.

Re: Email - 10/17/19 09:41 PM

The links I gave were for Thunderbird, not Outlook.
I can't help with Outlook.
I've used Thunderbird for years and don't know about anything else.

In Thunderbird you can mark emails for deletion the same way as you do in a Windows folder using Windows Explorer, holding down the Ctrl key to mark separate emails (or holding down the Shift key to mark a group of emails and click the beginning and ending emails of the group), and after they're marked use the delete key.

Re: Email - 10/17/19 09:54 PM

I know the links were for Thunderbird. That is what I changed, but still no full addresses.

For some reason though that web page to get Outlook keeps opening and is keeping Thunderbird from working properly. This is why I don't do this stuff. I never do it right.

Yes, I deleted a lot of emails today while in Thunderbird. It is in Outlook where that is hard to do.

Re: Email - 10/17/19 10:10 PM

I use Outlook and to delete several emails at once, highlight the top email of the group - and then whilst holding down the shift key, highlight the bottom email of the group.
[All the emails in the group should then be highlighted.]
Then just hit delete.

Re: Email - 10/17/19 10:21 PM

That's the way I do it in Thunderbird and in Windows Live Mail too.

Re: Email - 10/17/19 11:16 PM

Actually, yes, I think it works that way in the regular Outlook but not in Outlook 2019. It is still easier though in MSN. (Whine, whine)

Well shoot. I can see the whole email address in the regular Outlook program also; just not in the paid Outlook programs. I didn't realize that.

Re: Email - 10/18/19 05:30 PM

I had to uninstall Thunderbird. It wasn't working. I'm sure I didn't do something right.

Re: Email - 10/18/19 05:41 PM

You would have had to go into the account setup to enter the POP3 settings for your internet service provider.

Re: Email - 10/18/19 05:55 PM

Yes, I didn't do that. The circle was automatically filled in for Exchange and I tried to just do that but then it wanted me to download and install Owl extension which I did not do. When I closed that webpage the email seemed to be working. All my emails loaded and I deleted some as mentioned, but after closing the app and re-opening it, it didn't load anymore emails.

I've never set up an email account before and I'm not sure I'm up for doing that. I'm sure I'll be okay with what I have.

I'm not sure what you mean.
It shouldn't download more emails if you've already downloaded them all previously.

If you have missing messages, check to make sure you don't have this problem

Re: Email - 10/18/19 06:34 PM

Thanks Jenny. I'll take a look at your links.

There were a lot of new email messages that I received (showing in my other email) that were not showing in Thunderbird. Only what was there when I closed it yesterday. No new stuff.

Yeah, that set up is a little beyond something I want to deal with. Also, what showed on screen when I downloaded was not the same as the pictures in the link for how to set it up.

I think I might not have checked the box to remember my password since I wasn't sure about using the email and that may be why new emails didn't download.

I'll just stick with what I have, but thank you very, very much for providing all the links and information so I could take a look.

Re: Email - 10/25/19 05:17 PM

Since I got my Windows 7 back and have the MSN Premium App (with my favorite email program) installed on there, I was able to find the place for downloading the app. I wrote down the url and typed it in my Windows 10 and was able to get it installed and working on Windows 10. I'm not sure I'm allowed to have it on 2 computers at the same time, though at some time in the past I did and I'm sure I had been told then that it was okay. Anyway, I think I will just use it on the new computer as I am trying to get away from internet use on the old computer anyway.

Yay!
