So, remind me what graphics card do you have?

First thing to do is check that your monitor is plugged into your video card and not into your motherboard graphics.

Given that you could play the game one year ago, what changes did you make in your hardware or system software since then. If there have not been such changes, then Crimes and Punishments should behave as it did one year ago.

It is possible that one of your recent games made some system changes. This typically happens when they want to upgrade video software used by many games. That might result in something that C&P can't work with. If this is the case, you will have to reinstall an older version of the software.

There's at least one thread on Steam about what to do if you get this error message (graphics card not supported) with the game, along with some possible workarounds.

One thread can be found here.

This is what the fix does... -nosettingslimitlow - This will override system limitations and run the game with low graphics settings.

I do have a question though, Beerhead. Do you only have integrated graphics? If you do, you will have to be careful of what games you purchase.

I don't know if I have integrated graphics.I have very limited computer knowledge. How can I find out? I have Intel R HD graphics 4600.

Yes, that's integrated graphics. There are many games you will not be able to play, so when you look at purchasing games, watch the system requirements carefully. Anything that requires a dedicated card probably won't play on this computer. The fix for this game won't work on any other games as far as I know.

Can I get it back to where it was?I want to be able to play without any problems like it was.

If the version of Crimes & Punishments you're using has been "updated" by Steam so it's no longer compatible with your computer's onboard graphics, there's not much you can do except use -nosettingslimitlow to start the game.

If the version of Crimes & Punishments is the same as when you last played it, but your computer installed an "updated" version of the graphics drivers that isn't as compatible with the game, you can try reverting your graphics drivers to the previous version.

But I don't know which it is.

Is Crimes & Punishments the only game that's giving you a problem?
If so, I'd recommend just using the -nosettingslimitlow with Crimes & Punishments.

Yes,that's the only game giving a problem.I don't want any trouble buying new games because of this fix so I uninstalled it and removed -nosettingslimitlow.I feel safer now, thank you all.

The -nosettingslimitlow fix described at Marian's link would only affect Crimes & Punishments, not your other games or anything else on your computer. It looks like all it does is skip a "system check" the game uses before it's "allowed" to run.

So there's no reason to feel "safer" by removing the game or the -nosettingslimitlow tweak.

The Intel website lists Crimes & Punishments as playable on the HD 4600, but requiring reduced game settings

As Draclvr said, with Intel HD 4600 graphics you're going to be limited in what games you can play. Not all games will run with Intel graphics, though some games will run on low settings even if the Minimum requirements don't list Intel graphics as compatible.
