new desktop computer

My computer is now 9 years old and I'm in the market for a new one. I'd like to get a Dell all in one so that I don't have to have a tower on my desk. Will a new computer play the older casual games from Big Fish? I used to play the big games but as I got older I found that I didn't have the patience for a long long game. Another thing I like about the casual games is if I can't do a puzzle, I can skip it (when you get old, you don't have much tolerance). I would like to know if anyone has any thoughts on an all in one.

All-in-ones are a great solution for email, documents and Big Fish games. You will not be able to play any new adventure games on the cheaper ones as most of these games require stand-alone video cards. The ones that run upwards of $1,000 do have stand-alone video cards. These are not terrible specs for an all-in-one for $949.

Things might have gotten better over the years, but in the past, there wasn't much you could do to repair an all-in-one. We had a couple of the monitors fail in my office and they just had to chuck the whole computer.

I keep my tower on the floor next to my desk.

If all you're going to play is casual games, you'll be OK with an All-in-one.
Some All-in-ones actually have video card chipsets like the Geforce GTX 1050 that could play more demanding genres as well as casual games. For example some of the 24" All-in-ones at

have the Geforce GTX 1050 with 4 GB of dedicated graphics RAM.

I haven't seen games running with the integrated Intel graphics 630 graphics.
It would probably be OK for casual games even though it has no dedicated memory.

What size screen were you looking for? Dell has 22", 24", and 27" sizes.
The 22" seems to be the cheapest, but they only have 4 GB of system RAM so I wouldn't recommend them. People have reported slowdowns just browsing the Internet when their computer only has 4 GB of system RAM. So I'd recommend getting a computer with at least 8 GB of system RAM.

Some of the All-in-ones at Dell only have a small size 128GB or 256 GB SSD drive, while others have an additional 1 TB hard drive for storage. Considering that I've filled up a 320 GB drive with my Big Fish games (and had to uninstall some of them), I'd recommend getting a computer that has the extra storage.

Some older casual games don't seem to work with Windows 10.
Most should work, though some may require tweaks like running as Administrator.

So what I gather from your response is that you don't really like the all in one. That's really the information I was looking for. I'm not sold on an all in one, I just thought that it would give me some more space. I like your suggestion of putting the tower on the floor. Who knows if I might decide in the future to play adventure and role playing games again, so I might as well get a computer that will play them. Thanks Draclvr, you always give me the best advice.

It's not that I don't like them... they are a great solution for non-gamers or as Jenny says above, casual games. If you ever want to play a new adventure game you would definitely need the one with the dedicated GTX 1050. And I just don't know about repairs should something go wrong. They may be MUCH better now. I know if a regular monitor goes bad, you can replace it. Maybe I'm just being too pessimistic because I work on a lot of computers where something has gone wrong!
