GOG - 06/17/20 06:27 PM

Hi Sorry I am back again. New problem. I have been playing Schizm the mysterious journey. Just got through a very hard puzzle saved and quit. When I went back to play, the "Play " button was not lit up Tried most things just wouldn't let me play. I emailed GOG.com and with the pandemic it could take a couple of weeks for a reply. they suggested the community forum. This I did and there were two solutions and its these solutions that I need help with.

The first is this. He said he restarted GOG galaxy and it was back to normal. This I don't know how to do does it mean uninstalling GOG ?

The second this guy said his exe was running in the background and needs to turn it off manually, when this was done the play button was back in use and no need to restart Galaxy.

I know I am a pest, not a clue how to do any of these solutions. I really would appreciate your help .

Re: GOG - 06/17/20 06:39 PM

You are NOT a pest!

Firstn the way to restart GOG is to first shut it down. Look in the lower right of your screen in the taskbar and click on the UP arrow. That will bring up your running programs. Find GOG Galaxy and right click it. There should be an option to shut it down. Then try running your game again and see what happens.

Second thing suggested involves your Task Manager. CTRL/ALT/DEL to bring it up. In the Processes tab, see if it's running in the Apps part at the top. If not, then look through the list below. If you see it, click to select and then select END PROCESS.

Re: GOG - 06/17/20 07:22 PM

Hi I have looked at the first solution and right clicked on GOG and it pops " open or exit.". If I click exit and the game runs ok will I have to open it again at some time.
The second solution told me that nothing was running behind the scenes.

Shall I click exit ?/

Yes... click exit. Next time you launch your game, it should launch GOG.

So, does this mean it worked? I hear ya with the lockdown!

Re: GOG - 06/18/20 07:38 AM

Hi draclvr Got to tell you it worked no problem. I was going to email GOG to say problem solved. Then I went back in to play my game and the play light was out again I will have to exit GOG every time to play this game. Better than not being able to play it. I will wait to see if or when GOG come back to me.

I will stick to Steam I don't seem to have any problems with them and they are so easy to contact not like GOG Their site is a nightmare.
Well back to my lockdown. To be fair I had my first shopping trip yesterday for three months, all suited and booted with masks and gloves LOL
Take care and thanks again

Re: GOG - 06/18/20 01:28 PM

I'd have to say this might be a bug in the game, but I might be wrong. This also may be a game you can play off-line without connecting to GOG Galaxy too. There are several ways, but try going to the Game file. I never play using Galaxy as I find it too annoying. Go to Start/Programs/GOG games and find your game open it up and find the .exe file. Click on it to launch the game. If it works, just delete the GOG play icon on your desktop and right click the .exe file. Select Send To and then Desktop to create a new icon.

Yeah, it used to be the other way around with GOG and Steam! Steam was horrible with technical assistance and GOG was great.

My personal experience is one of never having had any problems with GOG tech support.

Re: GOG - 06/18/20 01:59 PM

You don't need the GOG client to play GOG games.
Try what Draclvr suggests and start the game directly from the game .exe instead of using the client.

I don't know for sure if the installation for the game is any different when using the client as opposed to downloading the game installer directly through a link in your web browser and installing from that.

I don't like game clients. They add one more way to fail. And I certainly don't like them running all the time in the background, whether you're playing a game or not. I think it's creepy.

You should certainly email GOG about the problem though. If their client is malfunctioning with this game (and perhaps other games) they should know about it and fix it.

Re: GOG - 06/18/20 02:20 PM

Hi This is all new stuff for me. I thought as I purchased the game from GOG I downloaded it had the icon for the game on desk top and played the game that way .Or go to the library when all my purchased games are and play from there. I do this with Steam, there is all my list of games there, I download them and play and can go back if I want to.

What's this "game clients"
You guys know a lot of stuff. LOL
I will do as draclvr suggests .

Re: GOG - 06/18/20 02:25 PM

Galaxy and Steam have game clients that they have deemed good for their games. I can't only assume there are people who enjoy being able to communicate with other players etc. while they are gaming. I am not one of them. I do like the Galaxy client for downloads as it's much easier, but after that I'm with Jenny. I don't like it running in the background all the time.

Re: GOG - 06/18/20 02:28 PM

I don't like the game client running in the background either. I also don't like it in the start-up menu. Fortunately you can fix both of those things.

I love GOG but I only use Galaxy for really big file downloads - and don't allow anything like "clients" to be constantly running rolleyes

Re: GOG - 06/18/20 07:07 PM

I'm just wondering if you tried this second thing that Draclvr mentioned to do after getting out of the game:

"Second thing suggested involves your Task Manager. CTRL/ALT/DEL to bring it up. In the Processes tab, see if it's running in the Apps part at the top. If not, then look through the list below. If you see it, click to select and then select END PROCESS."

I haven't played this game yet to know if there is a problem with it. I did have reason to contact GOG during this pandemic (about a game code) and I was helped quite quickly.

Yes, she said the second solution showed nothing running behind the scenes.

I too, have always had good luck with GOG technical assistance.

Re: GOG - 06/24/20 08:09 AM

Hi I just have to tell you after all the help and advice I received from you all.
I normally just close the lid of my laptop and don't close it down. yesterday I was getting lots of notifications telling me to update and restart. I thought I better, it had been a while. This I did it took about ten minutes.

I guess you now know where I am going with this. Yes Schizm started no problem.

My laptop just went nuts, everything changed, the layout ,a new browser. I had to put in all my favourites again . I had to contact my daughter in Lanzarote and walk me through everything . Crazy, Crazy.

Thanks again for all the assistance you gave me. I am progressing with this great game. Memories, Memories LOL

You are great gameboomers
The very kindest of regards

Re: GOG - 06/24/20 01:22 PM

That's good to hear! I always recommend doing a complete shut-down or a restart once a week. That clears out all the stuff and junk in the virtual memory. For those of us who work on computers, a restart fixes about 95% of problems!

Thanks Draclvr I will do that. Learned my lesson LOL

Re: GOG - 06/24/20 05:35 PM

I update my security, registry cleaning and scans - and then shut down my machines - every day smile

Doesn't anybody else ??

Re: GOG - 06/24/20 06:43 PM

I always used to shut down every day but when my Windows 7 started looking like it didn't want to start up I started to just leave it on. I am now back to shutting down every day again though, which is what I really think is best.

Regarding GOG Galaxy, I use it because I am not good with knowing how to download things and saving them to discs or whatever and appreciate being able to just let the client handle it (the downloading part), however, I don't really like GOG's client that much. It doesn't usually automatically update which means I still have to figure out what to do and usually do it wrong AND it is much slower to me than Steam or Big Fish.

I am glad Schizm is working again for you though maggsie!

Re: GOG - 06/24/20 06:58 PM

I've always shut my machine(s) down every day because I felt it helped in less dust being drawn into the tower(s) and cut down on wear and tear of moving parts smile

Re: GOG - 06/24/20 07:31 PM

Mad, that's why many people - including me - put their computers to sleep at the end of the day instead of shutting them down. It shuts off everything like fans and moving parts, but leaves the operating system in a state of stasis. When I tap a key on my keyboard, it wakes right up. I shut it down on Sunday nights to clear out the virtual memory. When Maggsie closed the lid on her laptop, that automatically puts it to sleep.

HI Draclvr and all.
I could be wrong but I believe I read somewhere that with Windows 10 even if you choose the
Shut Down option what it really is, is Hybernation mode and not really a total shut down. Please let me know if this is wrong or not.

Re: GOG - 06/24/20 09:12 PM

Shut down in Windows 10 shuts my computer completely down Starcom.

Re: GOG - 06/24/20 09:31 PM

Nope! Shut down does just what it says... shuts it down completely. Hibernation, sleep and shut down are three different things.

This is an optional setting. By default it may be set to hibernate in order to make it look like Windows is booting faster. Hibernating instead of completely shutting down exists in both Windows 8 and 10.

Here's a thread where someone tells how to change the option
https://superuser.com/questions/1096371/why-is-windows-hibernating-when-i-shut-down

Here are some other instructions I found for Windows 10, mainly to do with the power button:

Select the Start Window icon in the lower left
Select Settings
System
Power & Sleep
Additional Power Settings
Choose what the Power button does
Change Settings that are currently unavailable
Under Shutdown Settings, choose what you want to happen when you use the Power button, then Save Settings

Re: GOG - 06/25/20 01:50 AM

Thank you for your quick reply Jenny100, I actually forgot to check my power button feature until you brought it up and when I did , surprise, surprise, it was set up as Sleep. So I changed it..

I still prefer to do a "proper" daily shut down, Draclvr. Always have smile

Re: GOG - 06/25/20 03:39 AM

I totally agree that: Hibernation, sleep and shut down are three different things.

If you just put your computer or laptop (I guess more so to laptops) to Sleep and if you say, have your Laptop sitting on top of a Laptop fan to keep it cool, then your laptop fan will keep running in Sleep mode.
Hibernation is a deeper sleep mode and then your laptop fan will stop running, I know this because both my wife and I have Laptop Fans and they will keep on running in sleep mode but not in hibernation mode or shut down.
