Specs Advice Please

Specs Advice Please - 09/21/20 11:27 AM

Hi.

My Son in Law is trying to make time to build me a Win10 machine pretty soon and wants some idea of specs.
So I'm hoping to get some help here grin

I don't actually expect to be buying all that many new "graphics intensive games" as I already have zillions of games in my collection that I can happily play on my WinXP and Win7 machines, but of course there could be a few yet to be developed/published games possibly requiring Win10 that I might fancy.
I'll therefore be looking at a quality graphics card but not necessarily the very latest all singing, all dancing variety yes

So .... in summary .... advice as to Processor, Power Supply, Memory and Graphics Card would be helpful, please .... plus anything ELSE (you will know better than me) that I will need to specify.

[He already knows I will be asking for an SSD for the operating system (C Drive) and a non SSD (but still fast-ish) drive for my games and everything else (D Drive.]

Thanks very much in advance !!

Basics...
First off, a higher end motherboard. I have always used Gigabyte boards, but the last build I did for my grandson had an ASUS board and I really liked it. You'll want it to have lots of USB ports and a good sound chip. The integrated sound on the newer boards is quite good.
At least a Core i7 processor - 8th generation or higher.
16 GB of RAM
I much prefer a nice big 1 TB SSD for everything because it makes it all so much faster.
If you prefer Nvidia video cards, take a look at the GTX 1660 Ti. It's not the highest end, but it has pretty good specs. The RTX 2060 and 2070 are much higher end and cost upwards of $550 - $600. I'm not familiar with Raedon cards, but I'm sure someone else will be.
The power supply will be dictated by how much other stuff you have - I like a minimum of a 600 watt power supply, but you may not need that much.
You will also have to decide if you want an optical drive, card reader or other extras.

Then go have fun picking out a really cool case!

I have the RTX 2080 on my new Razer and it seems to run even Dead Red Redemption smoothly, from the short time I played. Expensive no doubt, but possibly worth it in years to come?
