Make is MSI GF65 thin 15.16" Gaming laptop

There is also another make with the same specs its called Lenovo .Legion 5
You said they could be pricey and these two are £999.00 each

Re: New Laptop - 10/12/21 01:51 PM

Holy smokes! Both of those are VERY high end gaming laptops. They can play the most demanding of dark side games!

To be honest, you don't need an RT 3060 graphics card to play casual and adventure games. MSI and Lenovo are both very good brands. I assume they both come with Windows 10? Can I assume all the games you refer to are disc games? Almost all of the new laptops do not have disk drives, so you would have to check that. A new exterior drive is pretty cheap.

Re: New Laptop - 10/12/21 02:49 PM

Thanks draclvr . I knew you would give me some great advice. I download most of my games from Steam and have them all on my laptop. The early ones I downloaded from the cds I had bought years ago. I hope I will be able to play them.
I am going to ask when I buy it if it will have windows 11 I am not sure as its new isn't it .
Any info on Windows 11.

Re: New Laptop - 10/12/21 03:24 PM

Then you are good to go with your Steam downloads. This laptop is really high end and FAR more than you need unless you start First Person Shooter gaming! But if this is within your budget, then you will be good to go for a long time. You'd have to ask about the OS and also ask whether the hardware will support Windows 11 if it has Windows 10.

I do know that one. Another one is, "Use the good china!" And that's why I just built myself a super high end desktop!!

Re: New Laptop - 10/15/21 05:13 PM

Hi I am back and in need of advice again . I visited my local store to buy a MSI gaming laptop and was told that because of the pandemic that it could be month or more before it would be delivered. So gutted I went on line at the same store and could get this laptop within a few days. I have the specs can you check them out for me. Its a lot cheaper £659 That's why I'm not sure

intel core i5- GTH 1650,512 GB SSD 15.6" screen

Intel Core i5-10500HProcessor,
Ram 8 GB/ Storage 512GBSSD
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTH 1650 4 GB
full HD screen/144 Hz

Re: New Laptop - 10/15/21 05:28 PM

The reason it's cheaper is because the components are downgraded. Your original one had a core i7 processor; this one has a core i5. The first one had 16 GB of RAM; this one has 8. The first one had a high end Nvidia 3060 video card; this one has a lower end 1650 Nvidia video card.

It just all depends on if you want to wait a month for the higher end one or settle for the lower end one. The lower end one will be fine for casual and adventure gaming.

Re: New Laptop - 10/17/21 03:28 PM

I assume you mean the little USB adapter for your wireless mouse? Are you sure you have the right port? If you can give me the model name of your laptop, I can see what kinds of different ports it has. I believe this one has USB A, USB C and regular USB ports. Looking at some photos, it looks like it might be on the left? Get out your manual and see what it says about the different USB ports.

Re: New Laptop - 10/17/21 03:48 PM

The only Model no, I can get is this SKU Katana GF76. I just took my wireless mouse from my old laptop and just thought it would slide in but it doesn't. there is a USB port on the right and two on two left Also the usual half curved one as well.
Surely USB ports are all the same ?
Thanks Draclvr

Re: New Laptop - 10/17/21 05:28 PM

On the left is USB 3.2 Gen 1 port
Audio port connectors
USB 3.2 Gen 1 Port (type -C)

On the right is
USB 3.2 Gen 1 Port
USB 2.0 Port
Hope this helps

Re: New Laptop - 10/17/21 06:23 PM

And again, we ARE talking about the little USB adapter, right? The USB 2.0 is the port you want. And no, some of the new USB ports are not the same! The old USB 2.0 ports have an "up" and and "down" way to insert the adapter, so make sure you have that right.

Re: New Laptop - 10/17/21 08:05 PM

Thanks Draclvr You are so good. I have been talking to the store online and they were going to replace the whole laptop . I said "What" there is nothing wrong with it . a tech guy will be talking to me tomorrow.
I will let you know how it turns out, up to now the laptop looks super duper with red light keys LOL
Cant wait to start my games
Thanks

Re: New Laptop - 10/18/21 06:55 PM

How did you get the USB adapter to work?

ENJOY your little slice of heaven! Now... the big question... what is the first game you are going to play?

Re: New Laptop - 10/19/21 08:01 AM

My Son just slid my old wireless mouse in no problem, I was just too timid as it didn't click in as easy as my old laptop I guess because its new . I did buy a new gaming mouse though its still in the box, I don't know if I will use it . It got lights all over it LOL and hundreds of buttons well 6 . LOL The make is Trust and its called RAVA Illuminated .
The first game I will be playing is Nemizis Mysterious Journey 111 and the curser is just going where I want it to go. Yay .
I have to re- install all my games I have from steam but that's no problem .
I am just learning the layout at the moment. Its still Windows 10, no option to install 11 that it only for ordinary laptops so I'm told .
Thanks again Draclvr you have been such a help

Re: New Laptop - 10/19/21 08:59 AM

So it sounds like you just needed to turn the USB plug over as Drac had suggested.

Glad you are finally getting to play Nemezis. I haven't played into the game much as it makes me feel a bit ill. I'm not giving up as it seems to be a good game but I haven't played it for awhile. frown
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: New Laptop - 10/19/21 02:00 PM

So, Nemizis it is! One of the things you are going to love is how speedy it is.

I can't figure out those gaming mice with all the buttons! They are for playing the high end shooters and RPGs. I have a very nice Razer Death Adder Chroma which I can set the colors on, but all it has is two buttons on the left side for my thumb.

Windows 11 is not for just "ordinary" computers - it is available for ALL computers. At least ones that are capable of running it because of the new hardware requirements. I'll bet if you go into your setting and updates, it will tell you whether you can run it or not. I wouldn't suggested downloading it though.

Thanks again Draclvr I will heed you advice and I am taking this fancy mouse back to the store.

Re: New Laptop - 10/19/21 03:24 PM

There are lots of fun computer mice with the ability to change lights and work well too. Most of the Razer mice are wired because they work better for gaming, but a Chroma Death Adder is around $50 at Amazon UK. If you want something fun, yet not so fancy, try looking there... there are other brands too. I usually make mine red and green for Christmas!

Razer Death Adder Chroma

Look there for fun wireless mice too.

Re: New Laptop - 11/26/21 01:48 PM

Hi draclvr I hope you can help me . I have been using skype to talk to my daughter in Lanzarote and yesterday the camera didn't work so she couldn't see me. I tried to sort it out by going to settings and clicking the on for skype and it still says no device found. Have I clicked on the wrong button on the keyboard ? I just don't know . I hope you will know I dont know all the F numbers and their symbols .
i am at a loss

Re: New Laptop - 11/26/21 02:56 PM

Hi maggsie, until Drac comes along, I will say there are a number of suggestions to fix this issue, but first of all make sure that you have allowed applications to access your camera.

You can read about how to do that by looking at the first suggestion here when Skype can't find your camera.
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: New Laptop - 11/26/21 03:11 PM

Marian has the right suggestions. But you should also make sure your camera is showing up in Device Manager. Right click on the white Windows icon in the lower left and select Device Manager. Look in the "imaging deviced" heading to see if it's listed or if there is a yellow exclamation mark.
Posted By: maggsie

Re: New Laptop - 11/28/21 09:41 AM

Thanks Draclvr and Marian. I checked and the the camera for skype app is on . Then I went to windows task manager and there is no imaging device that I can find. I checked every section and cant find anything with a yellow question mark. or anything relating to video or camera . My son is coming round this afternoon I just hope he can sort it.
It worked perfectly when I first got this laptop the camera just came on automatically, I know I must of pressed some button on my keyboard that I shouldn't have.
Thanks to both of you I am off to Lanzarote on Tuesday morning so I will forget about it till i get back LOL
The bestest of regards

Re: New Laptop - 12/28/21 10:25 PM

Late to the party once again. I offer a few thoughts to consider.

If you’re shopping for a new computer, a desktop is a much better deal, unless you truly need the mobility. Much more repairable and upgradable.

That said, you will soon discover the ergonomic disadvantages of a laptop. Looking down at the screen all the time is a real pain in the neck. The only solution is to hook your laptop to external everything, effectively turning it into a mini desktop. External monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers. My laptop is my bedroom computer, with all the accessories on a rolling laptop desk. It works Great!

Now here’s the potential biggie. Download the service manual for your laptop and buy a couple of cooling fans. That’s what killed my previous laptop. The fan in my current laptop just died and I had to replace it. I had previously bought the last two cooling fans HP had. The fan is the only mechanical device in your laptop, and about the only thing you can repair.
