Who should have performed that song?

Who should have performed that song? - 07/30/21 06:34 AM
Hi
Not really a puzzle in the usual sense, so if it needs to move to Mixed Bag please feel free, but there is hopefully some thoughtful and fun head scratching nonetheless.
It came to mind from an ongoing thread at MIxed Bag about things we like to listen to.
Put simply, what band or performer based on their name should have performed a song based on its name. For example:
Losing My Religion (REM) should have been performed by Faith No More
Who Let The Dogs Out (Baha Men) should have been performed by Bow Wow Wow
The best answer by consensus and acclamation wins this bright shiny car

An astute observation, flotsam, but apparently there are a couple of bands called Mustache which I would offer as strong contenders...!
The Cars actually sang Drive, but should obviously have performed Route 66 and Speedway At Nazareth (and I am sure there must be other appropriate songs for them)

Lex,
I do think Cars also should have covered Paul Simon's "Cars Are Cars."
Flotsam,
I was thinking that Debussy's La Mer would be too difficult for Seals and Crofts, but a good sea chanty like "Greenland Fisheries" or "Shoals of Herring" might be good.

Nice ones MR
A sea shanty would be excellent LK, and maybe to feature the latter half, what about Rain On The Scarecrow?
And Little Red Corvette is another for The Cars.
Frontier Psychiatrist - Pavlov's Dog
Romeo and Juliet - The Romantics
Halo - The Angels (an excellent Australian band from the late 70s and 80s)

ABC - ZZ Top (RIP Dusty Hill)
A couple more for the Cars - Long Black Limousine and Chauffeur Blues
Excellent Gordon Lightfoot suggestion from michele rose!
(Paul Simon's song Cars Are Cars was a new one to me, and the rather impressive Angels were a new act to me)

Staying with the theme ...
Big Yellow Taxi - Deathcab For Cutie
Im In Love With My Car - Rage Against The Machine
Glad you liked The Angels Lex. They were my go-to pub band at the time.
The song for which they are iconically known is Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again. A reowrked version of a terribly boring effort once they reinvented themselves to be way heavier, here is a 1979 version.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLZl6vgT7HMNot long after, a very fun and boozy ((and not entirely appropriate aka rude words) audience refrain sprung up at live performances. How many times did I go hoarse as a result!
Two links below also highlight the tempo at which they variously performed the song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jLoxp8EmoMhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-lO3tZDKLQSo many great Aussie bands of that period.

Re: Who should have performed that song? - 08/04/21 09:33 AM
Flotsam, did the Angels have a change of vocalist or did the vocalist have a radical change of image?
My favourite Australian offerings are just about anything by Emily Barker (now a UK resident) but especially the album Dear River, Diesel and Dust by Midnight Oil, The Kick by INXS, and of course some of the BeeGees material (although at least some of them were born in the Isle of Man and a statue of them has recently been erected here).
But back to the theme, perhaps Drive All Night by Midnight Oil or The Cars

Re: Who should have performed that song? - 08/05/21 01:16 AM
No change Lex; he aged and then got quite sick. He was 67 when he passed away in 2014.
I didn't know the Gibb boys came specifically from Isle of man. And I don't know Emily Barker so will check out Dear RIver. The other two are classics.
Re the theme, The Cars would certainly have an extensive catalogue. We could add Little Red Corvette, Mustang Sally, Highway Star, Heel on Wheels and lots more.
To change tack, there was an Ozzie band for a brief fleeting moment called Big Pig. What songs might they sing??
