Has anyone used the Tor Project software and if so would you recommend it? If not, which of the "anonymity" software would you recommend?

TOR might be useful if you live in a country that censors certain websites -- or if a particular website blocks connections to your country.

Occasionally TOR will be useful if your traffic to a particular website is being routed through a router that is down, and not getting through.

But if you think TOR makes you "anonymous" online, you should read what Security Expert Steve Gibson had to say about TOR here
https://www.grc.com/sn/sn-493.htm

A TOR connection is also very slow compared to a normal internet connection.

I don't know of anything, especially anything affordable, that truly makes you "anonymous" online. Your ISP will always have records of what websites you access, even if all the data you send and receive is encrypted.
