You can pick the game up here. However, I have no idea if the game would run - it's a Windows 95 game and might not run on newer versions of Windows. I have never tried to play the game on a newer operating system; I played it on a Windows 98 computer.

It is for sale at Amazon. It is made for older computers though.
Draclvr states at Glitches that it is a game that might not install, play or require a lot of tweaking. Check her thread here and other members cannot load it.

I had for a long while. I could never make it run on Windows XP or windows 7.

Inferno got it running in XP, but had to tweak several settings, including Virtual Memory.
http://home.earthlink.net/~infernofilecabinet1/XpSetUpWalkthroughsA_E/Byzantine_Setup.htm

She also suggested a CPU slowdown program, because some timed events in the game would be too fast to handle otherwise. Of course nothing that was sufficient for slowing a processor in 2003 would be sufficient today with a modern computer.

It's one of those games that you keep an old late 1990's computer around for.

hi Jenny100, please pass on my thanks to everyone involved in this regard. i didn't realize the game was THAT old! i don't think i will even attempt to try to run it on my Windows 7 machine. this may be a moot question but will it run under Windows 10? robert.

It's extremely unlikely to be playable on any modern computer due to the processor speed problems that Inferno mentioned. Even if you got it running, which is doubtful since it probably contains 16-bit code, the timed sequences would be finished and you'd have failed before you were even able to see there was one. The game requirements were for a 90 MHz Pentium (133 MHz "recommended") and computers today are orders of magnitude faster. You couldn't even play it on Windows 98 inside a virtual machine because it would still be too fast. Unlike DOSBox, virtual machines have no control over processor speed.

If you are determined to play it on a modern computer, your best bet is one of the specialized SVN versions of DOSBox like SVN Daum. Some people have managed to install Windows 95 or 98 inside SVN Daum. Regular DOSBox does not support Windows 95. However you may still run into QuickTime issues with Windows 95 inside DOSBox, such as some of the cut scenes being skipped.

It's by far the easiest to find an old 1990's computer with Windows 95 or 98 installed if you want to play this and similar very early Windows games.

Just Adventure is putting up their old reviews again, which has confused some people. I think it's a good thing though, since many of the games they reviewed still deserves attention. And that certainly goes for Byzantine, which is an outstanding game.

The drawback is - obviously - that it's sometimes a whole science to get these games running on modern systems.

The lesson is that if you happen to see an old 486 computer with Win 95 at a friend's or relative's home gathering dust in a corner - ask if you can buy it for a few dollars. For an avid adventure gamer it can be worth more than a top notch gaming computer with Win 10.

Byzantine: The Betrayal is a fun game and I've played it since it first came out. I play it on Windows 7 using the Windows 95 compatibility mode. Also, here is a website that I found where you can download and play old computer games. Here is the page for Byzantine: The Betrayal:

[edited/deleted link]

You have to pay a fee of $5.95 for a 1 day download or $8.95 for a monthly download. But then, you can play the games as many times as you want.

Hope this will help.

Why, [deleted link] allows to download that game for free as well - you do not have to pay.
Which means they probably do not have any rights to sell or distribute it.

I deleted the link to the site you posted, Call1e, as I am not at all sure that the site is legitimate. As Iurii stated, that website probably does not have any rights to sell or distribute those games.

I hope people can play it. I remember it with great fondness.
I confess I went to Istanbul and looked things up based on this game - I wouldn't have even known the cistern was there, and the old book and map part of the Grand Bizarre I might never have found.

O. K. Sorry. I didn't think about the distribution rights when I posted that.
