Died of cancer at 69. How sad and shocking to hear. Had no idea he had cancer. He will be missed. Such a unique person in the music industry.
Sometimes lost is where you need to be. Just because you don't know your direction doesn't mean you don't have one.

Tony Visconti who co-produced Bowie's album "Blackstar" which was just released a few days ago said that "Bowie thought of the album as a parting gift to his fans."
Huge crowds in London gathered at a mural of Bowie or more accurately the image of "Aladdin Sane" the alter ego of Ziggy Stardust created for the album of the same name, which is a play on words "A Lad Insane." Many of them sporting the signature lightning bolt face makeup from that period. What makes his work all the more brilliant is that he was writing as a character and in some cases a second or third generation character. He thought of himself as David Jones, playing the character David Bowie who would write about Ziggy Stardust and envisioned the character Aladdin Sane. Later, he moved out of those characters, maintaining the Bowie image because it/he had become so well known - How wild and fun is that?
Visconti was also quoted as saying and I'm paraphrasing here because I heard the interview earlier today, "David died in the same way he lived his later life, quietly and artfully."
That seems very true to me since he was able to see the release of his last album, which is so classic Bowie it hurts, in a good way and see the success of the Broadway play "Lazarus" which he co-wrote. So he went out at the top of his art, still vibrant and very much alive with that art.

A great character gone and one who managed to maintain more privacy and dignity than many. Rather irreverently, I always like to throw this one into the mix: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyQxTWDLZ8o
