Another British crime drama which shows up on Netflix as "A Netflix Original".
Like "River", "Marcella" is about a police detective with mental health issues. Where River sees and talks to people who aren't actually there, Marcella has black outs and cant remember what's happened during them. For 8 episodes the viewer isn't sure if Marcella isn't actually involved in one or more murders.
Marcella is a wife and mother who retired from the police department. After her husband leaves her she returns to the police department when she learns there have been a series of murders similar to one she failed to solve 11 years previously. Is it the same killer or a copy cat? Is Marcella's obsession with one suspect leading her in the right direction or is she way off base?
This short series takes so many twists and turns its hard to follow. Best to binge watch it. If you take time off between episodes you'll forget too much and get confused. The ending leaves some unanswered questions possibly to be answer in a second series/season/
Its hard to actually like anybody in this. Marcella is abusive. Her husband Jason is a jerk. Their daughter has a bad attitude. Even the murder victims are not innocents.
I was wrong about the ending,
I thought Marcella failed to catch the killer 11 years ago, because SHE was the killer. She wasn't. In fact there were two serial killers. The one she suspected did the first 5 plus 1 and a copy cat killed 7 more, in an attempt to hide his motive for the one murder that benefited him.
