Hi TLC! From K'veer we learned that the ultimate goal of the game is to release that brown tablet that Yeesha talked to you about, and then make a choice about what to do with it. This is done by completing the four Ages (you'll see how). So, just explore. Explore all areas. When you want some more, come back to this post...I'll give some nudges. Also, you should read my post brief tutorial on the Bahro and the slates Here It should help. Good to see you back in another Myst game! Dadguy

Hi Dadguy Your tutorial post really helped. If there was any mention of Bahro in the previous games, I totally forgot. I went back into the game and finally noticed the hand icon to raise the slate, then saw how to draw on it. Thanks again and I'm sure I'll need your help again.

TLC, there is also this:
Tutorial about handling the slate....
I might have missed it, but in case anyone wants a short tutorial on picking up and dropping the slate, here it is. I have talked to a number of people that were confused.
1. You pick up the slate the first time by clicking on the slate at the pedestal (click when the slate icon appears). The slate will then go to the bottom of the screen.
2. Once you have it at the bottom of the screen, you can either drop it on the ground (clicking the edge of the slate when you get the slate icon with the DOWN arrow) or bring it up to write upon (clicking lower, on the face of the slate when you get the open hand icon).
3. Once it is brought up to write upon, you have three choices. You can drop the slate to the ground (click the icon of the slate with a DOWN arrow on it) or you can put it back in your belt (clicking in the bottom center zone with the pointed finger icon) or you can write on it by LEFT-CLICKING and dragging the round icon. If you drop it, the slate glows a bluish glow on the ground.
4. You can pick up the slate again by simply walking over it most of the time.
And this about a "back-up" button...
I like to BACK away from the slate after I drop it. This way I am sure to see the Bahro when he appears. With my mouse setup, I can go backwards by clicking the SCROLL roller down (not turning it, but clicking down on it).
Have fun!

I would add that one thing I've noticed is that if the Bahro touches it, but then disappears and leaves the tablet glowing there on the ground, it seems to mean he doesn't like your drawing, or can't recognize it; good time to run forward, pick it up, erase it, and then have another go at the drawing, otherwise the next time he comes back, he will take the slate back to the pedestal you took it off of (or else the original pedestal, sorry can't remember now how that worked).
You can tell when he likes/recognizes your drawing, because the first time he touches it, he will link out and take the tablet with him right away. Then if you go to the original pedestal, you'll find your new symbol on it, and can link there right away by touching it, and there you'll find the slate.
dadguy's method of backing away with the mouse scroll button is an excellent one, because you can see right away if the Bahro recognizes your new drawing, and takes it the first time, and if he didn't, you're in good position to run quickly forward over it to pick it up and try the drawing again. Sure saves time running back to the last pedestal to retrieve the slate.

Great clue from Dadguy about backing away! I've used it lots now, and it is wonderful.
One thing to remember though is that you can't always back up - I tried one spot yesterday but there was this big drop-off behind me so I couldn't back up - so when you're at a spot where you want to drop/lay down your slate, take a look around you first to see if you can back up.
I'm using the combined movement method but to back up I just hit the downarrow key on my keyboard. Unfortunately, I use the scroll button on my mouse for something else.

I started it yesterday AM. I have done very little exploring on my own - have Bert's partial w/t and have done OK up to now. I have found and read all 12 journals, and followed the w/t up to taking the 12th journal, listening to Yeesha on the hologram device and clicked on the linking book to get back to Direbo - have opened all the gates from everywhere and am now trying to follow the w/t and do what it says BUT this last time I link to D. Esher does NOT show up and talk to me - anyone else have trouble getting him to materialize here? And when I follow the w/t and try to find the specified two landscape scenes I am totally lost, they do not look as the w/t describes.....HELP please Love, Betty Lou

OK, back to basics with me please. I understand how to put the slate up on the pedestal and how to draw a symbol and how to erase it. My problem is that I don't understand which symbol I am supposed to be drawing or where I find a clue that would tell me what to draw....for example, I can 'link' to Taghira by pressing the symbol on the pedestal and going there - the symbol on my left facing the pedestal, and the only symbol carved on the large stone surface below where the slate will go....is this the symbol I am supposed to draw? and where do I get a 'dictionary' of what each symbol means to the Bahro? They may know what it means, but I sure don't. To learn how to communicate with them I have to know what the heck I am asking them to do for me, don't I? Thanks for the help. Love, Betty Lou

Love, Betty Lou Hi Betty Lou I'll try to give a few slate pointers while we wait for dadguy! First, the pedestals are a way to link around within a world, sort of like the linking books in other games. What you want to do is look for other pedestals, say in Tregira, and check the symbols on them. Duplicate each symbol on your slate, one at a time, let the Bahro pick it up. If he understands your communication, he'll take the slate and put it on the pedestal with the symbol you've drawn. He'll also make a little mark on the original pedestal. It means you can link directly to the new pedestal from the original one. Why is this important? Well, some places in these worlds you cannot take a slate yourself. For example, in Tregira after you get out of the ice cave, you'll find yourself at the bottom of a ladder. Try carrying the slate up it. You'll find you cannot do it. However, by checking the symbol on the pedestal at the top of the ladder, and duplicating that on a slate, you then drop it for the Bahro to pick up and you'll find that the Bahro is quite happy to link up to that pedestal and put the slate on it. In some other worlds, you will be able to see the symbol on a pedestal from quite far away. Or, you'll be able to see a pedestal symbol which is not so far away, but just plain inaccessible in any normal way. No way for you to get there, except to etch that symbol on the slate, let the Bahro pick it up, and make a little link for you on the original pedestal of that world..then you'll be able to link there. Second use of the slate. There are some special symbols around these worlds. They don't appear on a pedestal, but they will appear within a slate shape, for example, etched onto a cliff face. They are instructions to the Bahro to make something unusual occur, like heat, or rain. These symbols are for more than just making interesting weather; they are essential to solving the puzzles in these worlds. Once you've successfully drawn one of these symbols, you'll see a little copy of it recorded on the slate, so you won't have to draw it again, just erase anything on the slate, then touch the little copy, and the slate will redraw it for you if you need it again.

I did it! I 'beat' that (steam) timer and have my heat symbol on my slate, and can turn the heat on at will....my next problem is that I do not see a "path across the frozen lake" - I must be blind or something. It would be good if Bert had included a snapshot/picture of the starting point of this path, cause I am not seeing it at all! Any help hints nudges and/or shoves would be greatly appreciated..... I have to admit that if I did not have a walkthrough for each and every one of these games I would never get very far at all....not tenacious enough I guess and just don't see a clue and how it relates to an action....it must be me! So glad you guys are here to help poor little ole me when I get stuck Love, Betty Lou

Thanks drdel, makes perfect sense. My next question is, if I have been successful with my drawing on my slate, and all the 6 valves up on the hill are set to the right, and I can see steam rising off across the lake, BUT I have not set the 3 blue dot levers to the correct positions, how do I reset those blue dot levers to r, l, l or do I have to 'backtrack' and start this sequence over again.....? Love, Betty Lou Use your slate and heat symbol to have the Bahro turn the heat on..go over to the blue switches, they should come up when the heat is on..and just adjust them to the correct orientation. Nope, doesn't work that way. Found out I need to start this sequence over again, redraw my heat symbol, drop slate, wait for Bahro to accept and take it, turn to blue levers and set them correctly then run over to red ones and set them correctly also, and take another 'picture' to save where I am.....just dropping the slate to start the heat/steam does not do it cause the bacteria path does not grow where I need it to be. That's OK, will redo it in a bit, need a break for a bit now. Thanks for your help. Love, Betty Lou

Once you've done this successfully, there should be a little icon of it on the bottom left of the slate; you can just clear the slate, touch that little icon, and the slate will redraw the picture for you. In fact, if you have that icon recorded already on the slate, and try redrawing it yourself, you may have problems getting Bahro to respond, as I gathered from some people's posts that they were experiencing that problem..seems it confuses the Bahro. turn to blue levers and set them correctly then run over to red ones and set them correctly also, and take another 'picture' to save where I am.....just dropping the slate to start the heat/steam does not do it cause the bacteria path does not grow where I need it to be. Love, Betty Lou yep, you'll definitely have to reorient your switches if they aren't correct, in order to get the bacteria path (bacteria path, that just sounds sick doesn't it?!). I went back and fiddled with this; the switches do come back up when you drop your heat symbol for the Bahro; I think a person could probably re-adjust them without doing the whole segment over. anyways, let us know how it goes.

Especially the first one it wont go to the right only left and center. I am using a cordless mouse, do you think that is the problem? Is there a saved game (to be sent) on this? my luck probably not! Vanje, several of us have noted this problem also. It seems to work better if you put your cursor closer to the round part of the switch and pull it over to which side you want the switch to go. I have a cordless mouse (despite my avatar! ) and I have no trouble if I put my cursor closer to the round part.

Ah, what a little time and space away from the stuckedness can do for ones perspective and thinking machine - I had the red and blue levers switched and that is why I was not getting my bacteria to grow so I could use it/them for a path across that lake....have since rectified this problem, have finished crossing and listened to Esher and linked back to the 'envelope' bubble but after drawing the Keep symbol, 2 stacked longish rectangles joined together and with a smaller 'base' they sit on, drop it and the Bahro picks up my slate, puts it back on the pedestal, and I go in to click on the Keep symbol on the pedestal, my slate is clean and there is no Keep symbol on the blasted pedestal. What can I be doing wrong? One thing I notice is that when I drop the slate and exit the bubble I am still in the ice Age, not Denibo with the bridges, I can see them but they appear not to be there.....? Anyone else have trouble with this one? Can't believe my Bahro is being so fussy so it must be that I am doing something else wrong.....HELP! and good night all. Love, Betty Lou

Love, Betty Lou For the Keep thing; did you do the other pedestal that is on the far side too? It is the one near the tombs with a circle and one straight and two bent lines coming down from it? I did that one first. Bahro picked it up and put it on that pedestal, and made a link to it on the first pedestal in the bubble in the ice cave. So, I was able to link there, and pick up the slate. Next I made the Keep symbol while being able to look directly at the thing across the gap.. dropped it there and backed up toward the pond so the Bahro could come and he picked it up..I ran up a bit and there he was putting it on the Keep pedestal. A number of people though have said they've had problems with this Keep symbol. I found it helped to make the two large rectangles quite thick and the adjoining ones thin and narrow. It also helps I understand, if you try to fill the slate with the drawing, don't make it too smallish. As for the bubble thing, if you want to go back to Direbo, touch the symbol for Direbo on the first pedestal - it is in the center, with three long, narrow rectangles upright and lines coming down from them. Once you're in Direbo within the bubble, you can turn and exit to the linking book.

Well, I have tried following both the w/t and your instructions and am left wondering just who appointed my Bahro as an art critic or judge...who the heck does he think he is anyway? I have drawn this stack of stones every which way but sideways and am totally sick of it at this point....could be I am not in a good mood because of this allergy/cold thing I seem to be having right now. He is just to ding-dang fussy! I'm about ready to seek some lumber, nails and a hammer to build myself a bridge over to the Keep....maybe I will do better tomorrow. Thanks for your help tho, great directions, finally got the (frozen lake) symbol on my pedestal, just having a devil of a time with The Keep symbol. Love, Betty Lou

Good morning Dadguy and drdel. Thanks for the pictures of the stacked rocks. I am going to redraw it/them again and check something else before I redo it again and again, maybe I have not been checking the right pedestal, forgot to look at the one by the hut on the other side of the lake, maybe I will find The Keep symbol there? Or not, so will just have to keep trying to please this stinky little art critic until I get his approval I wonder just how 'great' his artistic endeavors are! Thanks again. See ya around (I know I will be back here soon). Love, Betty Lou

I GOT IT! FINALLY! And the only thing I did differently, after checking 3 pedestals and realizing that they symbol I needed was to be on the pedestal in the bubble, was chose a different place to stand to drop my slate...instead of taking two steps up to the edge of the abyss before the Keep, I only took one step so I was very close to the 'spider' pedestal, there is where I drew and dropped the slate, then I linked back to the triangle pedestal in the bubble and there was my slate and my symbol on the pedestal for the Keep! Made me kinda dizzy going round and round and round like that. And you know what, my drawing that the silly ole Bahro finally accepted was not that good a drawing, kinda crooked and not so straight lines, but what the heck, if he was happy so am I. Am now STUCK in Todelmer trying to get a reaction from that "green light at your right side"...I move the left lever to the top position (it must be at the top it won't go up any further) and (the green light dims or gets brighter as I move the lever) then I move the right lever to the middle position (seems to be the middle) and the light also dims or brightens, but there is no "inner ring of the device starts to turn" there is no turning of anything at all. And when I go back out to the control room and try to reset the controls on the right side back of that platform nothing happens, there is no green button to push. There are 3 buttons on that device but they do not light up green or any other color, they just sit there in their rusty condition and do nothing. What am I doing wrong or what am I not doing? When I set the green light back wall behind the control panels I come out and do hear a loud machinery noise like something is working somewhere...very confusing Love, Betty Lou  P.S. I told you I would be back

Good work on finishing Tahgira (or however that's spelled!) Betty Lou. Follow dadguy's instructions..when that thing comes on you'll know, and you will see an inner ring or dial around the green/bluish light turning too. PS. the green buttons don't activate on the telescope setting devices until the power is on, and until you shift their direction using the vertical and horizontal sliders.

Thanks drdel. Once I got it thru my thick head that the 'switches' regulated the amount of brightness or dimness on that 'porthole' screen I got it to work just fine. Your explanation was a big help. Now I am upstairs outside trying to adjust my telescope so that I can see that little light out there on that other pillar, and want to get a view of my next drawing for my slate, having trouble focusing in on it for some reason, just have to keep trying I guess. Having read others threads on this part I guess I could just go ahead and draw it without actually seeing it since I have Bert's w/t and pictures of it, but I would like to get a peek at it too. Will keep trying and come back later when I get stuck again. Love, Betty Lou

Through stubborn persistanceness I finally saw the pedestal and symbol out there on that pillar, took me a while to get it all oriented, but I finally did it. Now, I have returned down, down, down to the bubble on this 1st pillar (the big one with the telescope) and have attempted to draw the 4 circles connected with 3 legs on my slate but my Bahro does not like my drawing which I have to say looks a lot better than Bert's does in his w/t. So, just where am I supposed to drop my slate, inside the bubble? just outside the bubble? or where. I take 2 steps towards the steps going up so I am not too close and after watching him come twice to look at my drawing and second time he puts my slate up on the pedestal inside the bubble, when I go there there is no new symbol on the pedestal for me to link out to pillar #2. What is it I am doing wrong? Please help Love, Betty Lou

Hey DrDel I did it! The secret for me was not how good or exceptional my drawing is/was - these Bahro's apparently cannot draw as good as the worst drawers here on GB. They are fussy as to WHERE you drop your slate! I searched out C. Buda's walkthrough to see what he has to say about this (and other) sequences and he describes a slightly different approach to this puzzle, check it out on gameover (I think) if you are interested in his approach. I dropped my crude drawing outside that "dome" and stepped over to the telescope, and checked in the eyepiece after he took my slate and sure enough there is is/was! On the pedestal of pillar #2! Oh Joy that makes me feel so good. I have a strange situation here after drawing the next symbol the 2 circles with one arm on the right upraised and only one leg - After linking to pillar #3 (? I think that is where I am) both Bert and Coehlo do not describe what I am experiencing...I am able to climb down a ladder to the tram platform and turn around and climb up the other ladder to the center where the dome is, have entered and found Esher (once) and do not see the need to raise or lower the trolley any more. However I do not know how to get it to take me anywhere...this is so confusing - there are 2 pedestals? and I need to do all that linking back and forth and around and around to find the second pedestal? Going to take a break now for a bit, what with this cold and my sore throat these 2 w/t's are making me dizzy~ Will be back later to see if anyone can make some sense of this/these for me. See ya later, gator! Love, Betty Lou

Good stuff Betty Lou! I don't think the location you drop it is so important, but the important thing is that it worked for you. But it is fun to drop them by the telescopes where you can see a given pedestal.. if you are quick enough to peek through them again, you can actually see silly Bahro putting the slate on the pedestal! I thought that was quite funny! I'm a little confused too I don't know what the two chaps are saying in their walkthroughs. As for pedestals, there is pedestal #1 in the bubble where you linked in on (the pillar where the Red Room and telescope controls are); pedestal #2 with the top circle, three lines and three circles; and pedestal #3 with the two concentric circles, one line off to upper right and one line down. There is only one more pedestal, that is the Keep pedestal, and it isn't on the third pillar. You did turn the power on in the second dome yes? You will need to do that to get the tram to go anywhere. You'll need to ride the tram to get the final telescope setting, and also, inside the second dome on that third pillar, there is another slate symbol that you'll need in order to finish solving this world and to be able to locate and see the Keep symbol.

The reason you can't get down to the Tram from Pedestal #3 location is that the tram was pulled out so you could rotate the gear on Pillar #1 so you could see the symbol on pedestal #2 from the telescope.
So, you won't be able to get into the building on the pillar with pedestal #3 until you return the tram to the dock on pillar #3. That was the part that really had me scratching my head, dadguy. From Betty Lou's post it sounded clearly that she had no trouble climbing down the tram ladder and going into the dome... but as we know, we have to move the tram a little to get it's pulley wheel out of the way in order to see that symbol on the skinny pillar in the first place.

I had not trouble seeing all the symbols I needed to see through the telescopes AND had pushed the control lever for the tram to left some time ago...that must be why I had no problem climbing into the tram and up the other ladder to the walkway into the dome. So I guess I can just proceed as both w/t's say to...will check back with you tomorrow and let you know where I am then. Thanks for your help. Love, Betty Lou

Betty Lou I'm playing Myst V and am having pretty much the same problems you are. But my game crashed and rebooted when I was by the lake trying to do the "heat" puzzle. When I tried to go back in the game all my saved games were corupted and I had to start the game from the beginning! I was not happy! I had to do the frozen lake thing all over again and I had a terrible time getting the left lever on the blue dot side to move to the right. I also had a hard time just getting the puzzle to "activate" so the levers were engaged so they could be moved! I have finished looking thru the telescope and am about to reenter the bubble so I am about where you are. I hope no one else has the technical problems I am having. My computer crashed to the desk top several times and twiced rebooted all my it self!! I have a Sony multi media Pentium 4 with hyperthreading and a Radeon 9200 video so I don't know why it is crashing and rebooting. Any one else having similar problems?

Aside from your crashing being a technical glitch Kaki's sis, you might try this little trick someone else told me about for another game that did that to me - exit the game to your desktop, find the shortcut icon on your desktop and RIGHT CLICK on it to bring up a short menu, choose PROPERTIES and left click to open, choose to mark "compatibility mode" and apply. Exit this menu all the way back to desktop and try the game again. It may or may not help with this game. I am enjoying this one and have had no techie problems with it - yet - hope it stays that way! Love, Betty Lou

I'm back! I am in Laki'ahn and have dealt with the windmill. Yet when I go back into the "larger" cage and I see the smaller cage and the pedestal on top of it, with the side open to me I cannot walk under that small cage - the game won't let me, keeps turning me around. And I do not see any way to "climb up" to the pedestal to see the double triangle symbol - am I doing something wrong? This is so frustrating not to be able to go where I want to go! If however I am not supposed to go under that small cage then I'll accept that, just how the heck did you guys climb up to that pedestal? grrrr! Love, Betty Lou

drdel, the pedestal is above the water over my head - maybe I pulled one of the levers too many times? Bert says to pull right one once and Coehlo says to pull it 3 X - this is confusing! And thanks for coming by sweetie  You and dadguy are so helpful to little ole me P.S. I had to delete some of my earlier saves, had about 80 and it seemed to be slowing down a scene loading so deleted about 20 - really don't need them and I took a LOT of pictures/saves! Probably more than I needed to.. Love, Betty Lou

dadguy I had the same problem when I played the Path of the Shell and URU. I crashed in the game and my computer rebooted and my saved games were corrupted so I had to start all over actually 3 times before I was able to complete URU and Path of Shell.

WOW! and What a terrific game!! I finished it and I love it! BUT I WANT MORE!!! I readjusted that pedestal and went on my merry way, got another Bahro who was a bit picky over a drawing of mine but finally got it right. Now I'm sorry its over - it cannot be the end of MYST forever, there are too many ages to finish exploring and many more ages can be written if they want to. May just replay this in a different mode so have a bit more freedom. It definitely is a keeper for me. Guess I'll go crack NiBiRu now (after lunch of course). Thanks for all your help guys. See ya around GB Love, Betty Lou

I'm so frustrated with this game, I've almost lost interest. Are they shooting for the rocket scientist demographic or what I've had to resort to the walkthru, yet even so I can't get the heat to raise the valves so I can turn them. ON THE HUTS...when you need to turn the door levers right of left..which end of the lever should be pointing right or left?...the smaller or the larger? When the Bahro "turns on the heat", how can you tell? HELP please

Bleumoon, are you trying to step onto the far bank at the correct spot on the bacteria path? I only found one spot where I could do that...

I get to the other side but I can't step off...I've cruised along the entire far bank.
Is the correct spot to the left, right, center?
It shouldn't be this difficult.

It shouldn't be this difficult. The only spot I was able to step off; there is a little part sort of jutting towards the pond from the far bank. It's a bit left of the center. So, I just took a step past the center, turned right and hopped off.

I seem to have lost my last posting on this game, therefore, I apologize if I have posted on the wrong thread...but I am at my wits end. I have gotten to the top of the lab...drawn the snake on the slate and dropped it on the floor...(yes I was in front of the large lense and I saw the "door" open on the little island)...however, I am unable to get down all those ladders and stairs, to the pedestal, out of the linking bubble, through the cave to the other side of the island and across the water before the "door" closes. It is always closed when I get to the beach. Have I done something wrong? Is there a trick to it?
Today is the tomorrow you were worried about yesterday.

Well, I tried it your way. The first time it worked. I listened to Esher...went into the bubble and linked back to Direbo. The slate was not on the pedestal and there was no house, only the brideges. So I tried it again and the door does not open. OOOPS!?????

Hi Dianne,
To reset the tram, you have to move the switch on top to the LEFT, then click the button. When it reaches the farthest left distance (i.e., right up against the dock on the other side) the switch will no longer have any effect. So, as a test, see if it will move RIGHT once, then turn it to the LEFT again and click the bottom switch till it goes no farther.
Other than that, I'll have to experiment to see what might cause this.
Cheers,
Dadguy

There is an odd little animal hopping around right near where the symbol is. Oh! gee what was I thinking when I read elevator... lol, I should have known this one as I had such a problem getting him to accept mine at this point too!

Planet, using those red and blue switches won't accomplish anything until you have gone to each of the huts (I think there are six of them), and have moved the switch levers from left to right. After that, you should be able to make the red and blue switches work...

Planet,
Thanks for the clarification. Have you read the walkthrough?
The puzzle with the lens that allows a view of the ROCK door across the water requires you to put the snake symbol on the slate, drop the slate on the plate in front of the lens, then use the linking pedestal to go to the beach dome, then RUN (that is, hold the SHIFT key as you move forward) through the cave and across the water in front of the door. If you do it right, you will wait for about a minute before the door opens, then quickly run through.
If you drew the snake in a manner that the Bahro recognized it, then it will remain on your slate as an icon in the lower left corner that you can use again and again without having to redraw it.
Let us know how you do.
Dadguy

Planet--
did you get the power turned on in the observatory? If you did, you should see a green light on the telescope controls when you adjust the coordinates. then when you press the button (where the green light is blinking) and the coordinates will reset.
If you haven't got the power turned on, this won't work. Go around the back of the telescopes to a little hall that runs behind the main control room. About 5 clicks in going either direction, you will find a device like a ship's wheel or a rotascope, with 2 levers, one vertical, one horizontal. Basically, you need to mess with the levers until the wheel lights up and starts turning. This puzzle randomizes from game to game, so there's no code to pass on. Just slowly adjust one lever until the wheel is as bright as you can make it. Then adjust the other until the wheel turns.
if this doesn't help, or is redundant information, post again and I'll see what I can do.

Wow, no idea! The only thing I can suggest is go back to the Laki'an island of Direbo from K'Veer and see if it's there. But I can't think of anything else.
