I have spent the morning researching this part of the game. Some things I have found out:
- It is not necessary to see the salt first
- It is not necessary to visit the castle or cemetery
- It IS necessary to talk about the castle BEFORE talking about the cat
Here's a complete conversation-thread that works. Assuming the start of the episode; no prior conversation.
Fisherman:
- I like your fishing rod
- Do you mind if I hold it
- What are you planning to catch*
- How to deal with him*
Captain:
- You're Monsieur le Capitaine
- Pierre says you're from Carmors
- Tell me more about Pierre
- How long does he
- Doesn't he have anything else to do
Fisherman
{IMPORTANT talk about the castle before asking about the captain}
- Which way is the castle (or tell me about the castle)
- Have you heard of the Lord of the castle
- What do you know about the castle
- What did people believe
- Was the lord such an evil character
- So the castle burned down
{that conversation ends, and you must start a new one}
- I'd like to ask you about the captain
- can you really believe everything he says*
- is he a friend of yours*
{at this point you will be told about the cat; and when you exit the conversation the cat will appear. If you ask these last three questions before enabling the castle, it appears to create a dead-end.}
* Essential questions.
This is bare-bones. It does no harm to pursue the other lines of conversation, as long as the castle-first, cat-second sequence is not reversed. The captain has some really imformative things to say about the inhabitants of the castle. You can ask those questions now or later.
I can provide a saved game at the start of the episode if anyone needs it.
