This is a toughie..at least it was for me. So, consider yourself forewarned. If you'd like to throw caution to the wind and risk a loss of hair or limb, have a go at this puzzle...

You can solve this alone in the comfort of your home whilst dropping a few brandies or you can battle the grid and post an answer for one of the mystifying words. I know that after solving all eight of these clues, which is pretty much necessary to know if each one is right, I needed a few libations a massage and a bit of therapy.

Each of the letters in the diagram have a numerical value that can be calculated by adding the numbers of the intersecting rows and columns where each letter is found. For example, there's a "D" in row 1, column 1 so the value of this particular "D" is 1 + 1 = 2. There's another "D" in row 1, column 8 so the value of this "D" is 1 + 8 = 9. Each of the 48 letters in the diagram will be used once.

The clues show the numerical values of letters in a six letter word. The letters are represented in the proper order. Your mission is to determine where to put each of the 48 letters from the grid to form the six letter words.

Tried "to get going", got a migraine!

To make sure I understand:

evident that 4th letter of 1st word = a
and 4th letter of 4th word = d: yes?

6th word = orchid: yes?

If you'd rather not answer, that's ok happydance

Denis, you are on the right track in that the only letter with a value of 14 must be A; You can also work out that there are only two letters with a potential value of 13, three with a potential value of 12 ,and so on, while starting at the other extreme D must be the only letter with a value of 2.

I made a grid for the possible letter values to work from and crossed them off as they were used.

Ok ok...discovered I had a logic flaw in eliminating letters;
4 is meadow, 1 is infant ... I'm on a roll!!
