My computer has recently started making a sort of grinding sound about every 5 seconds. When it first started I didn't realize it was coming from my computer. I thought somebody was using some type of machine outside. The noise does stop for awhile at times but then starts up again. I can't really describe it any better than this.

Of course, just in time for my upcoming unofficial retirement. eek

Since the noise goes away for periods of time, I'd guess it's a case fan that only turns on when the case gets too hot.

Oh, I was afraid it might be my hard drive. Is there anything to do with a case fan other than replace it? I really do need a good internal cleaning. Trying to wait until May when I'll have more time.

Thanks Jenny!

Yes it sounds like a fan. You cannot fix the fan you can only replace it. They are fairly cheap and if it is a case fan it is easy to replace,4 screws and unplug it. Note that there are usually 2 sizes used in computers a 80mm and a 120mm. Also note there is usually a fan on the video card and one in the power supply. I find the noisy one by stopping the fans with my finger. This might sound dangerous but the blades are plastic and the fan motor is very weak.
