I love humor in adventure games. Especially subtle jokes that make fun of the adventure genre! One oddity about adventure games is that you usually have a limitless ability to store very large objects in your pants. One of my favorite jokes, was in one of the Monkey Island games (Curse of MI if my memory serves). Guybrush has picked up a large paddle (or something to that effect). Instead of it magically disappearing into the inventory, there was an animation showing him inserting this very large object into his pants!! When he got it back out, I believe he made a funny comment as well. Or in the the first MI game, where you can "kill" Guybrush by letting him fall off a cliff, a hilarious reference to the untimely Sierra-style deaths. A little window even popped up similar to the Sierra ones telling you to restart, only to have Guybrush bounced back unscathed by a rubber tree. Anyone else have their own favorites they'd care to share?

What a great topic, Aggie, and I remember those scenes well; what a riot! Other adventure games that I thought were hysterically funny were Touche, the Discworlds (1+2) and the Crystal Skull. I can't remember any one liners though, but even funnier to me were Divine Divinity and Beyond Divinity (RPGs)- the latter where I got my signature below.

Hi Aggie [Afraid not, just off the top of my head. I'd have to install one of the games to refresh my memory ] What I DO vividly remember is sitting alone in the room, playing a Tex game, and laughing out loud at some of the stuff he came out with Cheers. Mad

Emilia, the comeback from MI you are thinking of in English is: "I am rubber, you are glue" meaning that the insult bounces off of you and sticks to the other person. Someone correct me if that's wrong (I have a bad memory!)

My all time favorite game, Grim Fandango, had a lot of funny moments. Like Manny's poem to the moon, with the harbor master chiming in: It shone, pale as bone As I stood there alone And I thought to myself how the moon, That night, cast its light On my heart's true delight, And the reef where her body was strewn.

I love the Monkey Island games! Those were just chockful of funny moments! I still remember the mad puppeteer mumbling to himself, many of the insult contests, the cracks the tall hair-stylists made about Guybrush's singing and so on. Murray's threats when Guybrush spun him around on that stool... That bit with the moon in Grim Fandango reminded me of another moment in Tony Tough. The big gorilla/monster poet wasnt trying to be funny but we laughed heartily sometimes, especially when Tony's goofy voice chimed in (with the next question or comment). Albert and Susan in Death's house "training" Rinceewind allowed for some amusing moments as I recall. Death of Rats was pretty good too. My husband is still quoting one-liners from when he played Broken Sword 1& 2 with me. He still finds the black olives comment especially hilarious. And we still love lines from Return to Zork & Zork: Grand Inquisitor. I think y'all know many of those. The latest bit I personally find a riot is the guy playing the mystical shaman/pharoah/priest in Timelapse. For some reason, he just cracks me up! Susan

Actually, the open mic poetry at the bistro in Grim Fandango just had me choking--the college creative writing program I was in revered Beats and it was so accurate...I also like the moment at the end of, I think it was Escape from Monkey Island, during the credits, where Guybrush falls off the cliff and he's yelling, "Help! Anyone...? JarJar...?" That caught me by surprise!

I loved the open mic thing in Grim Fandango! I totally forgot about that too until you mentioned it. I think that's a sign I need to go back and replay that game!

It wasn't speech, but I remember playing Bud Tucker, and if you don't move the character for a while, he makes a rude gesture at the screen. First time I saw that I about fell off of my chair.

Gabriel Knight in GK3, also had the ability to stuff huge items in his pants pocket, like Mosely's entire sports jacket.
Also, in GK2, when he's starting to go through the physical pangs of turning into a werewolf, and Gracie is trying to comfort him, by wiping his fevered brow, he says, "Mind the hair, Gracie, mind the hair."

Yes, GF! The part where he makes wise cracks at the Living in the restaurant. And Oh! Pressing "P" for pickup when he stands above the kitty litter. He breaks into roaring laughter for a full 10secs! Hey wysewoman- what happens if you can string a couple of "correct" lines together? More fingersnapping instead of hissing? I can never muster beyond 3 lines correctly... Its nice when games don't take themselves too seriously.

Senor calavera-- I didn't know there was a correct or incorrect way to do it! It's been a year or so, but it seems that most of my recitals went on for 4 or 5 lines and got fingersnapping, and Manny just said "thank you" and did another...guess I'm just intuitive about lame poetry or something WW

The Monkey Island series,Grim Fandango,Simon the Sorcerer 1&2,Discworld 1&2,Fable,Tony Tough,Runaway, and all the old Accolde games all contained great humor. I must say that may all time favorite was in Kings Quest 2 on top of the mountain. You look into the hole in the rock and they had a preview of their Space Quest game that played. That cracked me up.
It's nice to be important but it is much more important to be nice.

The second time I played JP3: Legacy of Time, I was in Tibet in the greenhouse and knew exactly what to do with the apple. After getting my reward, Arthur quipped, "You've been reading the solutions guide again, haven't you Gage?"

I was totally surprised & laughed out loud the first time I adjusted the settings in Faust-7 Games of the Soul & Mephisto said 'Oh, we've got a real pro here' or something to that effect.
What a funny surprise!

I like the part in Zork Grand Inquisitor where an elephant like character is guarding a cave, after you try several items in your inventory to get past him , he says "Oh sure, just try everything in your inventory, somethings gotta work!" cracked me up when I 1st heard it!
I also remember in GK1, if you try to 'take' Grace, Gabe says "Don't I wish!"

I think there are a lot of funny lines in the Tex Murphy series, but the Journeyman series still has my favorites. Arthur is just too funny. In addition to the line noted by Lady K, I think of the scene on the wall of Atlantis where Arthur comments that Gage could pretend to be a plumber and then he quips, "Quick, Gage, show 'em your butt crack!" Or in the Andean world when Arthur starts singing "Up, Up, and Away," when they get in the balloon. And many more. Some of the lines by Tex in the new Nancy Drew Shadow Ranch are pretty hilarious. It is more the tone in which he delivers his closing "Ya-hoo" or "If you last that long." I am glad developers take the time to inject humor into games. It makes them more enjoyable.

One of the Grim Fandango beat poems I really liked went something like: I called my cat Boney Til she said it wouldn't do. I asked her why? She said, sister, that's what I've been calling you. There is a place in Black Dahlia where you could start the room spinning round and round til Jim Pearson falls down. When he gets up, he looks right at you and says "Now cut that out!" One final piece of (unintended) humor. In Hitchcocks: final cut, there is a place late in the game where the (male) main character dresses up in a long gown, which went great with his whiskers. I was so delighted I spent a good ten minutes making him leap up and down the stairs in his pretty dress. Leap, leap, leap!

Just finished a quick (5th time) run of "J-Man 3-Legacy of Time" to see it in all it's glory on my 19" LCD Screen. WOW!!! Another of (my FAVE ) Arthur's routines is when Gage openes a Map trunk in the Lighthouse. He goes thru all sorts of comments on a nasty looking piece of fuzzy carpet, the best is 'looks like Shattner's rug'.
