Unlinking isn't going to bring anything with it. It's going to stop One Drive from backing up to the cloud.

Let me look more at what you should see on your drive when you log in. NOT from your Windows, but from the actual One Drive Page.

When I log into One Drive on the internet, my files are listed on the left side with Recent, Photos, Shared, Recycle Bin etc. Do you see that when you log in? There is no Gallery there. The Gallery is only available through your File Explorer and that is not where you want to be.

I'm afraid to go into my OneDrive now for fear it will suck everything back up into the cloud.

Yes, there was a list of files in OneDrive. I can't remember all of them. But the only picture folders were from John's phone and some very old pictures from a previous phone, and I have no idea how they got there. My recent photos are not there. I'll try downloading them directly onto my laptop from my phone, but I have never been able to get that to work.

Also, I have spent the last several hours trying to set up my new printer. The instructions that came were so awful I gave up. I did find an excellent video that got the printer connected, but when I try to print a test page, the printer tries to send a fax and is demanding a recipient. I give up.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Do you mind if I send you an email so I can use some screenshots? You can access your One Drive from ANY computer. Have you thought of booting up your Windows 10 computer and accessing it from there and downloading your files to that computer?

It sounds like the default selection of Fax is selected instead of the printer itself.

For the printer, if you go into your settings and choose Bluetooth & Devices and then click on Printers & Scanners, is your printer listed? If it isn't, click on Add a Device. If the printer is on the network, the computer will find and install it.

Re the printer, I just turned of the printer and started everything again. I finally got the test page. The Canon instructions are so awful I could not even work out which button was the Settings button. I had to go to another video. I am now trying to work out how to scan a document. Honestly -- on my last Canon printer it was all completely obvious once the printer was connected, but on this thing I can't see how to do it. There are no buttons that say "print" "scan" "fax." I'm starting to think it needs an app, but for a laptop? That seems odd since the setup download didn't include anything like that.

I will dig up a different computer and look at OneDrive from there. I have one kicking around somewhere in my office.

Yeah, I agree. Every Canon I have ever installed has been a trial.

And I apologize - I meant to click on settings on your computer, not the printer.

And, yes, in order to use the other options such as scan, you will need to download the printer software. That's the only way I can use the scan option on mine too. They don't include the software any more, so just go to the Canon website and enter your printer model and download the software. What is the model number and I can do some digging around.

I have downloaded the software but I can't find it on the computer to use it.

I found the scan setting on the printer itself, but it seems to have itself locked into the USB option. The problem with that is that it did not come with a USB cord. It has a cable connection at the back, and it came with a cable and the cable is too short to reach my computer. I'm just dumbfounded. This is the most obtuse piece of equipment I've ever had. I mean, I set up the TV and sound system and DVD player here, but I can't get my printer working?

I see form an online search that once the USB option is chosen, you are SOL because you cannot change it back.

I assume you looked in your Downloads folder? That's normally the default unless you've changed it to something else. You can always use a search for Canon to find where it is. You will need to find the download in order to install it. The scan setting won't work until you get that software installed so you can associate it with your computer.

I have a hard time believing you cannot change a USB setting to the network setting. And is this scan TO a USB device or use the USB connection? PLEASE give me the model of this printer so I can figure this out.

It's all installed. It's just that it isn;t anything that can be interacted with. On my previous printer, there was a little app installed on the computer that you used to control the functions. In this case, there is no app. But it's irrelevant, because it came with a cable instead of a USB and there is no way to connect it to my computer.

And I cannot find the bill. I bought is about 5 months ago and the place has been chaos.

Printer cable

Did you find the software download and install it so you could have that icon?

It's the PIXMA TR 4720.

I finally went old-school and contacted them by phone. Got it sorted. I had downloaded only one of two files and now it all works. The manual really doesn't give much information about the software.

Apparently the printer needs an actual printer cable, unlike the last two PIXMAs I had, which had USB. Of course, this printer doesn't come with a printer cable, because you wouldn't want your customers to be happy right out of the box.

And yes, that is the cable I need. Good old Amazon.

The printer box does say USB cable not included, but there is no mention of a printer cable anywhere on the box. Annoying.

Excellent!

But that printer cable IS A USB cable! It connects to a USB port on the back of your computer. The square end plugs into the printer and that's what makes it specifically a printer USB cable. I haven't purchased a printer in the past 10 years that included the USB printer cable. I have several of them laying around. I don't use them as I connect the printer to the network and print and scan from there.

I agree with you Draclvr, it's been a long time printers do not come with USB cables or any other cables, that is why I am Sooooooo happy that I hang on to all my USB, HDMI cables, etc., one never knows when they will come in handy.

Starlink, LOL! That's why I have several boxes of power cables - which used to cost $25 back in the day - HDMI cables, USB printer cables, Toslink cables, etc.!!

Okay, so this morning I thought I'd work on the photo from my phone, get them on the computer.

I went into the Pictures folder I set up on my hard drive, where I finally managed to get John's pictures stored -- and John's pictures are once again not there. Not anywhere on my computer. I have One Drive turned off, so I have no idea where they went, but they are not there.

Have you tried downloading the pictures to another computer? Did you look to see if they somehow got backed up to One Drive again?

Did you use this link to completely unlink OneDrive?

Unlink or Get Rid of OneDrive

Yes, I went to that site and unlinked my OneDrive from this computer. OneDrive keeps reminding me that I'm not signed in, so it's still unlinked.

I went to my Documents folder to work on my taxes, and of course those folders are empty, too. That's not a huge deal because I have hard copies of everything.

I wonder if another linked device is interfering? That's the only thing I can think of.

So are the photos and files back on OneDrive? If so, that means, it is not behaving as it should. I would try disabling One Drive completely on that computer and then accessing the files on another computer and downloading them there.

This is outdated, but I found something in a search that references Office 365 being your culprit. Do you have it on this computer?

I also found this in a Microsoft forum from a very frustrated user. Could your OneDrive have repopulated itself after a reboot?

Quote
I initially unlinked and uninstalled OneDrive right out the box (literally). I kept trying to change the location of the Desktop/Documents/Pictures folders by right-clicking on the folder, going to Location, and changing it there (even hitting "restore default"), and that kept giving me an error.

So, I restarted my computer, and lo-and-behold, OneDrive populated itself again!! I then re-logged into my account, tried unsyning my folders, but it wouldn't do so, so at this point, I (again) unlinked and uninstalled OneDrive.

Then I proceeded to go back to the Documents/Desktop/Pictures folder inside the OneDrive folder, and at this point, I right-clicked on each one, went to "Location", and hit "restore default", and hit "Yes" on all the dialogue boxes that popped up, and viola!

Such a simple solution!

I wonder and like Draclvr said, you either copy your photos to another computer OR copy your photos to an External Hard Drive if you have it, OR copy your photos to a Flash Drive.....

Good idea, Starcom. But they don't seem to stay in one place long enough for her to do that. She can access her OneDrive from ANY device and just download them to another computer. I would be concerned with even having an exterior drive connected to the Windows 11 computer given the way it's behaving. That's why I have recommended using a different computer a couple of times to download these pictures.

I'm really wondering if OneDrive isn't repopulating itself after a reboot.

I don't know the entire situation with your OneDrive but as soon as I got my new laptop with Windows 11, I immediately removed it from my system by doing this:

Select the Start button,* type Programs in the search box, and then select Add or remove programs in the list of results. Under Apps & features, find and select Microsoft OneDrive, and then select Uninstall.

*Or go into Control Panel and find Programs and Features and Uninstall OneDrive from there and voila, gone...

Starcom, could you double check that OneDrive didn't repopulate after a reboot? I found a couple of posts that said it did.

Hi Draclvr, I just did a search on my Hard Drive and yes there are lingering OneDrive folders mostly empty and many DLLs and other remnant files but nothing with my photos or documents on them and Most importantly after I uninstalled onedrive about 2 months ago I was never pestered again by Onedrive asking if wanted to do this or that, I hope this makes sense, if not, please let me know and I will try and explain better, anyway I really hope for hagatha's sake that this gets resolved, we are so lucky to have You in helping us out with Compute problems.

That's good to hear. The posts where I found that people said it repopulated were from 2022, so maybe they remedied it. Another one said that even if you disabled OneDrive, if you have Office 365, it automatically saves to OneDrive unless you change the settings there.

I guess we'll have to wait to hear back from hagatha. I still think the best thing to do is to download these files to her Windows 10 computer since they are so important. Then work on OneDrive once she gets them safe and secure.

Yes I completely agree with you that she should copy them to another computer, much safer and secure until the Onedrive riddle is solved. Oh yes, you reminded me about Office 365, I got rid of those also since I don't use Office 365 since I have the Single desktop version which I bought a few years back. So maybe the fact that I uninstalled the Office 365 files probably helped to keep pesky Onedrive away.
