This was a tough one, Fogfighter! The only one I couldn't guess was 1 down, and I'm still in the dark about it.

Yeah, some items were a tad unusual this time. I'll elaborate on the Põlvamaa after the 24 hours.

I agree the Polvamaa clue was a big tad unusual, but luckily the answer to all the others took care of that.

Your solution was correct, of course. The EST is the country code for Estonia, of which Põlvamaa is a region. Over here in Europe many cars have stickers with the coutry code. For example S for Sweden, or D for Germany. And Est for Estonia.

I think a thing like that shows a crossword at its best. Solvable with existing knowledge and when completed you have also learned something new.
