We need your help!Yoomujak's Ring is a Full Motion Video (FMV) adventure published a few months ago in Hungary by Private Moon, the developers of the AGON series. The game was filmed using some of Hungary's best known actors. It's a historical adventure set in the town of Eger. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The developers have offered GameBoomers exclusive access to the Yoomurjak's Ring demo. They would like comments from anyone with a broadband connection who can download and play the demo. You will find that: "The demo is fully subtitled, with some images and locations also retouched to include English text instead of Hungarian, where it was important for understanding the game." Once you have played the demo enough to have an opinion, please fill out the poll below. The poll asks about your impression of the demo generally (you can vote using 1 to 5 stars). Then it asks your opinion about how best to modify the game for English language gamers. The more people who play and fill out the poll, the more helpful this will be to the developers! You can download the demo, which is 650 MB here or here. You will need a broadband connection, as the demo is large. Download times so far have ranged between 40 minutes and 5 hours. Thank you.

I'm sorry with my dial-up I can't help out, but I know our wonderful members with broadband will note that the developers have entrusted Gameboomers with this in trying to make a better game. That's a nice compliment!

This is really a wonderful game. Sure is a long demo to. Been playing for a half hour and still not done. Really smooth controls. I't easier to read the subtitles and not use the speakers. Sure get a good view of Eger Hungary. On my way to vote. Richard

Not at all impressed... Graphics are not what I expected..& too much panning...I personally hate that... Game has potential ...Needs work.... I would suggest getting rid of that panning camera All In all very nice game....But not my type of game. Easy interface<Menu use is nice> My opinion Thanks

I thank the developer for looking to the gamer for opinions.
The graphics are very good Full Motion Video, very good Controls are also very good
But after playing for thirty minutes I still did not know what the story was. The subtitles were going by much too fast and if I looked up to view what was happening I missed what was said. I found myself just staring at the bottom of the screen trying to read as fast as I could. I missed a lot and what I did get to read I couldn't absorb.
Thank you Private Moon Studios for seeking our input but if the game is not dubbed in English with either full lip sync or no lip sync I could not purchase and play. Been waiting a long time for this FMV game and it looks to be a wonderful game.

I just voted. It is a very nice game, but I also feel I missed alot while reading the words. There is too much dialog to have to read and not be able to look around. I had a little trouble with the panning ,but would get used to it in the full game.

Downloaded it and played a bit:because I'm not english, I'm quite used to read subtitles, but these are really fast even for an expert like me! Maybe because the leading actor is a very fast speaker? All the Hungarians talk fast as him? I found very useful the interface with all the dialogues, so I could read what I missed. The story is intriguing, but I agree with the other members:I can't stand the 360 degree play, make me feel dizzy, I would have preferred arrows with fixed directions. Thanks to Private Moon for the chance to tell you this!

Well... I thought it was pretty good. I do like computer rendered environments because you can create things that do not exist! I do hope that computer graphics will achieve complete perfection of environments one day. Some already have I feel. I love the panning, being able to see things in a 360 degrees is great. I do not like the Nancy Drew games as much because you cannot see all around you. And in a game like Yoomurjack's Ring panning is probably essential. Things were kind of blurry. I had quite a good tour of Eger! Nice, historic place. I think that there needs to be a marker on the map telling you where you are at. It stinks not seeing things in real time. I would like to see people moving and trees being blown by the wind, cars moving etc. Primarily though I hope that the companies focus on creating imaginary environments because you can do so much more. Eventually all the aspects of creating computer rendered environments, people, water, fire, etc. will be perfect!, I think. You can do things that are not on earth, which I find to be amazing.
I know that the team at Private Moon has worked hard on this and I wish them the best.

Hi Have played a little of the demo now and had no problem with the panning. Just slowed it down via OPTIONS in the game menu. I agree - the subtitles do tend to disappear rather quickly. But perhaps this is something that can be remedied Nice graphics and easy interface though Spent a short time investigating the hotel and my bedroom and am now exploring the town - but so far haven't encountered anything more exciting than .... carved signs above doorways So am hoping for something to happen soon Cheers. What a long demo! I've been playing for an hour and I think I'm about 2/3 through it. I would love it if you keep the original Hungarian and just make the subtitles last a little longer - it would look weird dubbed, and it'll lose it's charm. Plus, my mom's side of my family is from Hungary, and they'd love to see a game in Hungarian . Here are my thoughts so far: What I liked: -Excellent quality - videos look wonderful, and the static pictures are lovely as well. -The feature of having a printed letter version on the handwritten letters is one every game should have. Not all of us have perfect eyesight, and not all of us can read joined writing. -The acting is pretty good. So far only one character seemed to over-act. -The map is a must, and it works well. I would've liked written names on it as well, though, as the library and the hotel looked pretty similar (or maybe just have a picture of books to represent the library?). What I didn't like: -There's too much freedom. It happens alot in games like these that show a real location - you can see everything. Though it looks very nice I would've liked to be led by the hand at the start of the game. Take me to the tourism office at first, and only then let me roam around. I was walking around for a good ten minutes before I checked the map. Also, half the times I was walking I would end up in front of a doorway I couldn't go into, which was frustrating. -Like other people said - too much panning. It's a weird sort of panning where you need to place your mouse as close to the middle of the screen as possible to be able to move comfortably. This game could benefit from free 360 panning with the cursor fixed in the middle of the screen like in the Kheops games. And then make the screen fixed when you enter a close-up, or need to solve a puzzle. It makes for much faster movement. -Too much reading - this is just a demo and there are already five letters and one journal! It's tiring. The letters also seem overly long, but that may be just me. -At the start of the game the main character will urge you a couple of times to get out of the room. It happened way too soon. I had just begun playing with a new interface to get used to, and two letters to read in the inventory. The last thing I want to do is get out of the room - I want to explore my options, read those letters, explore the room for anything of interest and only then get out.

I find the graphics just fine, the panning is OK and gives one the freedom to look around even if one cannot go everywhere one would like to. The 'open'/'closed' cursor is great. Am unsure yet how to look at the map or read the letters. The English dubbing below the scene moves too fast as others have said. And since one cannot read English coming from the lips of the speakers it doesn't matter if it is synced or not when they are speaking a different language (at least to me). I played about 15-20 minutes and answered their 3 questions. And it does not bother me that I was 'tossed' out of my room early on, I just ignored that urgent GET OUT until I felt I was ready to leave Nothing stopped me from moving around the room as long as I wished. Looking forward to the full game, will buy it if the price fits my limited game-budget. Love, Betty Lou

OK, I loved the demo but I have played AGON. I am impatiently awaiting the Sword of Toledo.
In reality, the 3D gives an illusion of freedom, but your path is very restricted. I liked the map movements. I didn't have a problem with the dialogue, but I agree it is a little on the fast side.
As Hungarian is not an Indo-European language, I can't even guess at the Hungarian words, except those that have been imported into Hungarian and I know 5 languages.
Now for some minor criticisms. There are some irritating typos. For example in the flat "Doumentum" which should read Document. In Hungarian it is Dokumentum.
The English translation of the Hungarian dialogue is I suspect, a little too literal. When Jonathan met Juli at the Tourist Bureau, the exchanging of phone numbers sounded too "European" and not as an American would say it (and I'm not American - obviously by my spelling).
The demo is very linear and (surprise, surprise) the simple substitution code left punctuation and word spacing to make it obvious. I would not care to decipher a more modern code with even letter spacing and no punctuation. As it is, it is a good simple puzzle.
A 5 or 6 GByte download is just too massive, even with very fast broadband. My ISP normally runs at about 150 KBytes/sec. The download only ran at 40, so there was some limitation at the demo server end.
I will happily buy the game. I love FMV and the sights of Eger were marvellous.
Becky, it would be nice if (constructive) comments could be passed on to the developers.
Sorry for the long post.
Cheers, barbarosso

I give it a Thumbs Up Panning was ok for me. I actually preferred hearing the Hungarian and had no problems with the subtitles AFTER the opening. There is too much to see to be able to read and look at the story at the same time. This is also a very stilted translation and not at all American English. I think the designers would benefit from having a voice actor step in here, after changing the translation. (and I agree, there are dialogs that dont ring true on the subtitles) I really enjoyed the music. The ominous sounds as he entered the wine cellar, the music in the cathedral added to my enjoyment. Thank you and I can't wait to continue. Kate Also enjoyed just being a tourist.

I am downloading it now after reading your comments. I like the games where you can hit Enter to go to the next text. I read very fast, and get bored if it takes too long. I have never played a Hungarian game before, But I think I would like to watch the action and then be able to read the text.
Thanks for the Demo!!

Please please everybody who loves adventure games buy this game when it is released It really is that greata game I have downloaded the demo. And I have to admit I didn't expect much of it (or should that be 'from it'?) Oh, boy - was I ever wrong. Here be spoilers so read at your own risk. First, the game starts with a beautiful movielike scene with the train arriving at the town of Eger (I'm a big fan of trains, so allready by doing the game sort of had me interested ). I then expected this movielike scenery to be just like an entry of sorts, and expected the game to shift to a cartoony style game. I wa surprised to fiund that it didn't. And then I was hooked - for real this time. The movielike 3D scenes kept going on througout the demo (and of course, also for the whole game, I'd guess). Great thing I say The conversations felt fresh, real & lifelike - much more lifelike than the dialogues in Bioware's Mass Effect. Great writing there, devs The interface is the best I've yet seen in a adventure game - ever. The interface is point and click. You move around by sort of holding down the left mouse button and then turning around, and then there's an arrow that'll tell in what direction you're moving. You have a map with hotspots on, you can clik at when you want to go to say your hotel or the café or to the nice lady where you get information. Very well made is this The characters are really great, too... I like the fact that they speak Hungarian and that there's English subtitles. I hope they keep that feature in for at least the UK version (and maybe the US version, too). It really adds to the ambience and realistic setting in the story that your hear the characters speak Hungarian. There's a discussion over this going on in a thread at adventuregamers.com - feel free to join in The story is well planned out and well designed and made. It isn't that hard to figure out what to do next as the game gives you several hints as to what you need to do next. The only thing I thought about was the fact that the old smoked a pipe when Jonathan Hunt spoke to him at the café. And apparently cappucino has made it to to the town of Eger, Hungary, too... I didn't mind but it could have some influence on how the PEGI or the ESRB ratings would be. But let's tackle that one when we get there. This game remind of a game I played maybe 8 years ago, called Urban Runner, although this game, Youumurjak, is miles above the quality level of Urban Runner's e.g. meaning it is far far better than Urban Runner, simply beacuse of its great characters, interesting dialoque and intriguing story and plotTo add some constructive criticism to this: I wish there were more hotspots in the game, meaning that I wish that I could click on say the tv to watch tv, or on the the things in the hotel lobby to examine what they are as well as I could click on some of the things in my hotel bedroom to determine what they are. Just for fun - and maybe just maybe there could be something on tv I needed to have seen in order for me to progess in the game. Overall, the game demo has convinced me that I need to buy this game I just hope the Hungarian? developers will keep the Hungarian language in it, as well as the English text. It really adds, as said, to the ambience of the setting in the game... /Karsten

What a great opportunity. I am downloading now and will let you know.
I have played AGON and am waiting for Toledo. So, while on the website I have seen the information and site for Yoomurjaks Ring and had wondered when we would hear more about it.
Be back later. Thanks.

So far I like it. I am not saying that I love it, though. I don't know what to think right now. So I will save my comments for later.
Although, can anyone tell me what the eastern like code spells out? I can't figure that part out.
Thanks, Preston Did you ever figure out the code? Just curious, because I did. You can PM me if you have not figured it out. I am hooked! Now I need the full game. On the Settings screen under Graphics it says Ratoation where it should say Rotation Speed. Thanks you Private Moon for this opportunity. My opinion. I was surprised to understand that the main character Jonathan is an American. Now, I don't know how complicated this would be, or if even possible, but when he is thinking about his letter to Alison, or to himself, shouldn't he be speaking in American English? BUT, I do like the speaking in Hungarian and with the subtitles. I love FMV games. Having played a few others I did not find the movement awkward. As a matter of fact, I like being able to look around. I'm going to play through again. Check for language.

I think the point of the game is that Jonathan is a Hungarian? born in America (or in Hungary?) - who is now visiting the homeland, Hungary for the first time. And even the sicilians in USA as well as the chinese and vietnamese keep talking Italian and Chinese to each other - even after 4 or 5 generations in the US. It makes perfect sense to me that Jonathan talks Hungarian. Please keep the Hungarian voices and the English text in the full game. I like the interface, though

I'm no acting critic by any means, but I personally felt the acting was not bad at all. There were 1 or 2 rough spots, but for the most part, it was all very well done. As far as the plot of the game goes, from what I've seen so far, it seems like it could be extremely interesting - there's so many possibilities when your dealing with a time travel story, that it would be a real shame if they didn't take full advantage of it. I definitely found myself wanting to do more and learn more about what was going on, and that fact alone tells me I was interested enough in the story to want to keep playing. That is after all, the heart of every adventure game - the story. If you don't care, or aren't interested in the story by the end of the demo, it's a pretty safe bet your not gunna like the game :-)
The sub-title wording in some areas needs SERIOUS help tho. I don't know the 1st thing about Hungary or the hungarian language, but I can tell you for a fact, that if this guy, the main character(John hunt I think his name is) was really from NYC, there is no way he'd EVER say things like "I don't think I shall bother him at the moment, he looks busy." It'd be more like,"AY! Stop what your doing and take care of me. NOW!" LOL

Loved it! Have polled the game and am not surprised to find that my opinion is the same as most others. I thought the Hungarian language added to the ambience, but would perhaps have like this 'new yorker' to have perhaps spoken in English when talking to himself! I would prefer a DVD based version rather than online.
Does anyone have any idea how long we will be waiting 'til it comes out??
Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.

Finally found some time to play this demo. It's nice and long. Liked the graphics a lot, acting is mostly very well-done and I agree there should be more hotspots. There's so many things I would like to know more about, even it if was just a small remark like "this is a sculpture depicting St. George" or "a traditional local delicacy called langos" or something similar. Would definitely buy this game.
I'll be back, one day, when I feel like it.

I have now finished the demo - with great help from the tread in the hints forum about this. I tried to figure out how to decipher the code by myself, but couldn't. So thank you very much for this whoever translated the eastern code. As I said in my first comment about this game, this is one I'm getting. Just need a job first, though --- but I'll be getting it. I don't mind if the game is offered as download, but I think I'll be prefer being able to order a real tangible touchable physical disk, too. I was sort of sad to see the demo end - I wanted to find out more /Karsten

Fellow adventurers, Thanks for all your input, opinions, critics and votes concerning Yomurjak's Ring. I would also thank for Becky and Gameboomers for the opportunity, it was really useful. Some more exclusive stuff is on the way, so stay tuned on the forum We did not want to influence the comments and the votes with any explications thus far, but as most of you already formed an option, we feel it's time to collect all your ideas, and also give you a background about the current state of the game, and how we plan to move forward with the full release. Thanks for all the opinions going for the subtitle version - in fact, we have votes from more gamers who would enjoy the subititles, than votes for dubbing. As the video and audio cannot be separated technically in the game, we will only have a single audio version of the game, so no option for choosing game audio... But as an important number of votes suggested that for the game to be fully enjoyable, the English language audio is necessary, we will start organising the possibilities to create the full audio localisation of the game. We will certainly need a publisher partner's help with that, as this is a huge venture: the game is pretty long - some of you noted that the demo was also long, but the full game is much bigger, with more than 25 hours of average playtime, increasingly challenging puzzles, non-linear actions and also some nice twists in the storyline. I think it was very important to get feedback on the translation of the game - we will need to work on making the dialogues more "American" for our hero. Basically, we wanted to create a character who is a bit "out of his time" even without actual time travel involved (whoops, spoiler alert), so Jonathan is quite an old school guy in the Hungarian original version as well. As it seems that we cannot really play that duality we could do with the Hungarian dubbing (every character was speaking a more recent Hungarian than our hero, who learned the Hungarian language from his mother living in the US in the story). It does not really work in English, so we will make our main character more "up-to-date" in his dialogues. The speed of the subtitles was also raised in several posts. Unfortunately, the text speed and quantity is "determined" by the audio, and there is a lot going on in the game dialogues - and for this to work, the subtitles need to be synchronised to the spoken text. That being said, we will take care when translating the dialoges, that without loosing the style and the information, as compact translations would be created as possible, to make it easier to follow the story. These small details are very important to us, as we are used to quick subtitles here. A lot of movies are shown as subtitled only in Hungary, so it was never an issue to consider before - it might be less usual for someone in the US, though. As for more drastic changes in the game, for example regarding the panorama navigation, there is not much we can do, as the game is a "finished" product from the point of view of the technology used, as it was released in Hungary already (although you can adjust the rotating speed in the settings menu). As there are more FMV projects about to start, we will take the ideas in consideration when creating these, in the meantime trying to polish the technology for working with real action video and photos to make the two different source materials (also a 3rd one, the puzzles) work as seamlessly as possible. Thanks again for all participants, and I hope we will have some news shortly on the game, and also some other Private Moon projects Pierrot Private Moon Studios

Thank you for the update Pierott, I can only imagine the amount of work that must go into even what we consider a small change. I hope the game is a great succes. Ana

I just found this thread this week, although I've been following the release of Yoomurjak's Ring with much interest, so much so that I downloaded the Hungarian demo several months ago before subtitles were available. Needless to say, since I don't speak Hungarian, I didn't get far!
I'm thrilled at the prospect of an English-language localized release. I watch many subtitled films and didn't have any problems keeping up with the demo subtitles, although I found numerous instances where no translations were provided (clicking on certain objects would elicit a Hungarian response).
I've noticed many comparisons to A Quiet Weekend in Capri on this thread. Although I've only played the demo for AQWIC, comparing it to Yoomurjak seems a bit unfair; Private Moon clearly has the upper hand on graphics (smooth, seamless panning) and FMV. Like its earlier Agon releases, Yoomurjak is a labor of love and is full of small, charming touches that bring Eger to life.
As other gamers have mentioned, I'd love to buy this on DVD. I'm content with the subtitles and in-game translations of critical documents, although I would enjoy Yoomurjak's Ring more if *all* comments were translated into Hungarian. Keep up the great work!
