Does anyone know if you can play Black Mirror on Vista if you use the downloaded version? I know you can't if using a cd.

Hi dottie,

I would have thought so - but I'll transfer you across to our Glitches experts who should be able to tell you. luck

As far as the copy "protection," it should work.
But they don't list Vista or Windows 7 as compatible on the system requirements of the ***Adventureshop page***.
So it seems like they're not guaranteeing it on Vista.

You might try contacting Adventureshop at
support.adventureshop@gamesplanet.com
and asking them directly if there are known problems with their version of the game on Vista.

I downloaded the game the 2 days ago & installed on win 7, installed okay but playing is another matter. I get a high pitched static sound while playing & most of the time it crashes. Tried also on xp with same problem. I have tried everything with no success. I think it needs a old video card driver .nvidea 61.77 I have read works with it but my display card won't run on this old driver. The problem is most of the help on line was posted back in 2005. 3 computers I have tried now with the same results.

Just some ideas that may help getting older games to run on newer hardware...

Have you tried setting the affinity to a single processor?

Have you tried turning off audio acceleration in XP?

Have you tried installing in My Documents instead of C:\Program Files?

Have you tried installing by right-clicking the Setup and choosing "Run As Administrator?" (This is different from running the game from an account with Administrator privileges.)

tried all of those, the game runs under 16bit 800x600 resolution. there are also posts re the game has trouble running under xpsp2.

personally I think there is something wrong with the game file from the adventure shop as every person who reports this error downloaded from the same place from 2010.

I have managed to advance in the game a bit by staying away from going to the stable from the dining room door exit. when the sound problem pops up in other parts of the game it doesn't crash. the exe file that crashes I have set the compability also to win 98.

plumgas- grin

I have just put my copy of Black Mirror on my Vista Ultimate 32 bit, it will not play on mine. It will play on xp and 2000, that is what starforce said on the screen, and the earlier versions like windows 98 2nd edition.

I do not know if there is a fix for this. My display card is fairly new and my compter is all up to date.

Thought I might find out the reason why, but that is all the information I have. I am going to take my copy off and wait for Black Mirror 2, which I know (?) will play on my vista.

Black mirror will play on vista & win 7 but not without crashes. Version 2 has the starforce drivers removed. the starforce driver update which removes the driver only works on xp.

did you try changing your settings from 32 to 16 & set resoulution to 800x600 with compatability mode win 98 also the agds.exe

I have the download version which isn't problem free. I installed it on win 7 64 & it installed fine. The settings in my version have been already patched to run on my machine where cd hasn't so you will have to change a couple of things to get it going.

Is yours the cd version,

Maggie, if you have the CD version of the game that has StarForce, you won't be able to play it on a Vista computer. Changing the resolution and color depth won't get you past StarForce.

The download version that Dottie was talking about in the first post of this thread does not have the StarForce problem.

agds.exe is Advanced Graphics Design System and is the game engine for Black Mirror (mentioned in ***this article***.

It won't help with a StarForce incompatibility, but

Resolution
Adjust the color depth/resolution and refresh rate of your monitor. To adjust the color depth:
-Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel
-Double-click Display to open the Display Properties window
-Click the Settings tab
-Adjust the color depth to 16 bit
-Adjust the resolution (screen size) to 800 x 600
-Click OK to verify the changes

To adjust Refresh Rate:
-Click Start -> Run
-Type dxdiag in the Open box and click OK
-Click the More Help tab and click the Override button
-Select Override Value and enter a value of 60
-Click OK
