[b][b][b]I found a site on the web that says you can run the game by typing the following code in DOSBOX:

mount c C:\
mount e E:\ -tcdrom
E:
Install.bat

It is supposed to let you install the game from DOS, but when I tried, I got an error message saying that there was a "fatal error: creating "C:\HOLMES2.BAT", and that the game hadn't been installed.

I was trying to run this through DOSBOX 0.74. I have Windows 7, 32-bit system. and Internet Explorer 8.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Call1e

Does your CD drive use letter E: ?
If it has a different drive letter you'll have to adjust the mount e E:\ -t cdrom line.

Also, that line should read
mount e E:\ -t cdrom
with a space after the -t
(I'm not sure if you made a typo in your post or if you actually entered the command wrong)

Also, Inferno suggests
mount D D:\ -t cdrom -usecd 0 -ioctl

(or if your CD drive is E: and not D:
mount E E:\ -t cdrom -usecd 0 -ioctl )

(upper or lower case letters don't matter, but spaces do)

After typing the mount commands and
E:
you can test whether you've mounted the drive correctly by typing
DIR
at the prompt and see if it lists the files on the CD.
If it gives an error, that's why you can't install -- the drive is incorrectly mounted.

Yes, my computer uses Drive E. Drive D is a recovery drive on my computer.

I can get the E drive to mount, but when I tried to install the game, the computer said there was an error saying that there was an error creating the "HOLMES.BAT" file, and that the game hadn't been installed.

I'll try to retype it next week when I have more time and see what happens.

I'll be gone over Memorial weekend, so it will probably be Tuesday before I will be back at my computer to try it.

Thanks,
Call1e

I tried it again and still can't get the configuration right. Would it be possible to use the DOS "Copy" command to copy the game files from my CD-RM drive to my C: drive and play the game that way?

If DOSBox includes the Copy command you could try that. But the game wasn't made to install to the hard drive beyond configuration details.

I can try experimenting with it later today, but I'm a rookie with DOSBox. I'm better with real DOS on an old machine.

I've never tried it that way, but I did create an ISO image of the CD and mounted it in a Virtual CD application.

What exactly seems to be wrong with the configuration file?

Well, I installed DOSBox 7.4 on my old Dell, and I didn't seem to have any trouble getting Rose Tattoo to install and run. I only played up to the part where the intro videos are over and you start playing as Watson.

I installed DOSBox 7.4 directly into C:\
I don't know if that makes a difference.

I also created a C:\DOSgames folder to be the C: drive for DOSBox.

After starting DOSBox, at the Z: prompt I typed

mount c c:\dosgames\

to give DOSBox its own personal C: drive.
Then I typed

mount d D:\ -t cdrom -usecd 0 -ioctl

to mount my D drive as DOSBox's D drive.

If you have more than one CD drive, DOSBox says this:
mount d D:\ -t cdrom -usecd @ -ioctl
where @ is the number of your CDROM if you type
mount -cd

When I typed mound -cd, I got
0. D:
1. E:

so if I wanted to use the second drive for DOSbox, I'd have typed

mount d D:\ -t cdrom -usecd 1 -ioctl
instead of
mount d D:\ -t cdrom -usecd 0 -ioctl

------------

Once I had all the mount stuff out of the way, I typed
D:
to switch to the D: drive (CD drive).
Then I typed
DIR
to get a list of the files on the CD.
Then I typed
Install
(typing install.bat would also work)
and the install started right up.
It created a Holmes2 folder and a Holmes2.bat file inside the C:\DOSgames folder that DOSBox thinks is C:

Immediately after the Install, the Setsound configurator popped up. I chose the defaults (Soundblaster 16) and let it autodetect for both midi and digital.

After that, the game was good to go. Just type
Holmes2
and it started right up.

If you want to stop DOSBox, try Control-F9 (hold down the Control key and press the F9 key).

Also, has anyone played 2 other old Sherlock Holmes DOS games--The Vatican Cameos and His Last Bow? I've installed them, but can't find any walkthroughs for these games. Does anyone know where any walkthroughs for these 2 games would be?

Thanks,
Call1e

I've never heard of them before.
Vatican Cameos is a text game from 1986 according to Mobygames. They have no listing for His Last Bow, which I assume is similar vintage.

I've checked a few text adventure websites, but I haven't found walkthroughs for either of them.

I typed the wrong name. It is "Another Bow" and not "His Last Bow". "His Last Bow" was the title of Arthur Conan Doyle's last Sherlock Holmes story collection.

I finally got the Case of the Rose Tattoo installed. I purchased and downloaded a copy from someone at Amazon.com that had an installer for the game that would work with Windows 7. I'll play the game later when I have more time.

Thanks for everybody's help.

Call1e
