I have swapped out Graphics Cards a couple of times before but never in a computer with onboard Graphics. Should I disable the onboard chip before installing a card or will just deleting the drivers do? Or will installing a card in the mother boards available PCI E 16x automatically disable the onboard graphics?

Case:
Onboard Graphic = NVidia Geforce 6150 LE 256mb shared memory

Graphic Card to be Installed = NVidia Geforce 8400 GS PCI Express x16 512mb dedicated memory

Check your BIOS settings to see if there's an option to disable the onboard card when there's a graphics card present.

Sorry, could you help me out with how to check the Bios for that please?

Do you know what brand and model your motherboard is? You might be able to find a manual on-line. When I run DXDIAG it lists my motherboard on the first tab.

Most PC's will disable the On-Board chip when an add-on card is installed.

There should be a message displayed on your screen when the PC boots - similar to "Press F2 to enter Setup", that would be the BIOS setup utility.

I want you guys to know how much I appreciate your help when I have questions.

I was curious as to what a MotherBoard manual might look like as I never have perused one before but the Dxdiag for that computer didn't list it. In fact neither does it show on this computer. All mine computers (5) are Dell's. Do they not like to show theirs?

Thank you for showing me how to get into the Bios. Now that I tried it I remember doing that on a computer years ago but had forgotten.

I think I understand this and that I should be ok but please let me know for sure. Here is what it says in the Bios.

Quote:
Under the "Primary Video"
(2 boxes labeled) "Auto" & "Onboard/Card" (this one is highlighted)

Under the above it gives the definition (I guess)...
"Auto" = Use the add in Video Controller
"Onboard/Card"= Use the Intergrated Video Controller unless a Graphics Card is installed. A PCI Express Graphics (PEG) Card will override and disable the Integrated Video Controller.

The Factory default setting is = "Auto"

Even though the "Onboard/Card" was Highlighted I still entered in and reselected and saved it. Does this look like I should be all set with just installing the card and it will disable the onboard graphics so there is no conflicts. Also should I remove the existing NVidia Drivers using the Add/Remove in MyComputer before installing the new NVidia card? Then installing the Drivers that came with the card after?

The default setting is Auto - so you're going to be good to go, just install the new card and it will detect it.

Yes, it's a good idea to remove the old video drivers before you boot with the new card. If it came with a Drivers Disc, place it in the optical drive when you boot. Windows will normally ask you for the location when it detects the hardware.

Edit - I misread the values you posted, use the On-Board setting in the BIOS... although it looks like either will work.

Use the Intergrated Video Controller unless a Graphics Card is installed

Your BIOS selection looks fine to me.

I'd recommend uninstalling the current video drivers. Even though both cards are Nvidia, the drivers configured themselves for the old card at the time when they were installed.

Then again, it might not matter with your Dell.

If you want to know what motherboard you have, as well as other information about your computer, you can check by running the BelArc Advisor.

One other question...

In addition to doing everything above do I still have to "Disable" the NVidia GeForce 6150LE in the Device Manager or will that automatically be disabled by installing the new card?

It should automatically be removed if it's disabled in the BIOS.
