welcomeBy way of reminder, the object of this game is to solve the clue presented by the previous poster and then set your own clue.

Anything from the (worldwide) crossword arena is acceptable by way of clue style, but if you stray from the pure path beware the scourge of... ...Pandora's WET NOODLE! scared

The puzzle could be an old favourite or something of your own making. Don't be shy: this is for everyone, not just the old hands!

There is nothing to prevent (say) a couple of related clues if offering a single clue cramps your style.

If there are multiple answers involved, there is no restriction against one person solving all and the solver of the final clue/part is the one who goes next.

Obviously you need to await confirmation of a correct answer before posting your own puzzle, but please then do so reasonably promptly: if having answered correctly you are not going to be able to set a follow-up clue within about the next 24 hours, please pass your turn to someone else so that the game does not stall.

To save the poor demented solvers from excessive brain damage , you should consider giving a hint as to letters when the question is set, unless the answer is relatively short/easy so that provision of a letter hint at the outset would spoil the sport!

If no-one is biting within about 24 hours you are encouraged to start dropping additional hints.

To try to give everyone a fair crack of the whip, the immediately previous setter is asked not to post a solution to the current clue within the first 24 hours.

The weighty trophy to be passed to whoever successfully solves each clue is the jewel-encrusted World Clue Federation Championship Belt ===[**WCF**]===

Constructive criticism and cheerful badinage are to be expected,
not to mention a certain amount of national rivalry, but above all, have a bit of fun! sherlock

Our current belt-holder Sherlock will be putting up the next challenge...

Does Ed Sullivan mispronounce shows as shoes, and if not how does that clue work?

Yes....show as "shew"

Biography
Though he is most fondly remembered for his TV hosting duties of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, New York newspaper columnist Ed Sullivan was a show business personality as far back as 1932. Hired by the CBS network as a potential rival for radio commentator Walter Winchell, Sullivan took to the air with a heady combination of gossip and entertainment. Among the future radio luminaries introduced on Sullivan's program were Jack Benny and Jack Pearl (aka Baron Munchhausen). In 1933 Sullivan made his film debut in Mr. Broadway, which he also wrote. His subsequent screenplay and story contributions included the screwball comedy There Goes My Heart (1938) and the Universal "pocket" musical Ma, He's Making Eyes at Me (1940). In 1947, he entered the fledgling medium of television to host a variety hour titled Toast of the Town, later re-christened The Ed Sullivan Show. Though hardly a likely candidate for TV stardom -- he appeared to have a permanently stiff neck, wandered aimlessly around the stage,

slurred his words ("Rilllly big shew!"),

and frequently mispronounced the names of his guest stars -- Sullivan remained a Sunday night fixture until his series left the air in 1971. As an adjunct to his TV fame, he appeared as "himself" in such films as Bye Bye Birdie (1961), The Patsy (1964), and The Singing Nun (1965), and was parodied by countless impressionists, most notably Will Jordan. To three generations of rock music fans, Ed Sullivan will always be remembered for those five immortal words, "Here they are -- THE BEATLES!" ~

The moon is actually more useful than the sun since the moon gives us light at night when it's dark. The sun only gives us light during the day when it's already bright out.

&*#$%^&#$!! vein = vessel !

aorTA

aor = airsick : mispelled air (sick) ?
S'that legal? Love it!

TA = at (front = reverse indicator?)

Would this be as illegal ;):
A bit airsick around rear of vessel
a bit = iota mispelled as aota; r = rear

But wouldn't that be "Airsick at front" = A?

This was a clue from a puzzle in a paper which we found quite challenging but I was not expecting it to hang around this long! Therefore I will reclue it more conventionally:

Try endless tail on dog for frontrunner (11 or could perhaps be written as 5,6) catrub

S'gotta be something "setter" with a dog and all those "t"s

Trendsetter (although I can't explain it fully other than "all the rage" is a trend)

Rex, can you explain how the original works?
All I can "see" is a single definition.

A good collaborative effort from Sue and Rog;
rage = height of fashion (as in "it's all the rage"), and one held responsible for that is a trendsetter (who therefore has many followers), alternatively frontrunner as alternatively clued and explained by Sue.

Denis, the original clue is a single definition, the wordplay being the unusual meaning of rage (used without "the"), as signalled by the question mark.

Over to you Rog ===[**WCF**]===

Since when is a "single definition" clue legal?

Rubber stopper on icy surface?(6,6) = hockey goalie
Legal?

Ain't complaining; only saying if we don't
know single definition is ok, then impossible to solve.

I didn't even look back at the first one.

One held responsible for rage? (11)

I don't think that's a cryptic. It's more of a crossword clue.

Other opinions? Or should I just beat him and have done with it. wink

Yes, in my view, with the same qualification as Pandora mentions: not a cryptic but a valid crossword clue nevertheless (as long as there is a kink/quirk of some kind to provide a measure of obfuscation). smile

As it says in our introductory spiel to this thread, anything from the worldwide crossword arena passes muster.

Train oil = a whale product (also known as whale oil) - trail (dog/follow) containing (swallowing) noi (number one).

Not an expression with which I was familiar, but it had to be some sort of oil from whales. smile
