Guess I'm alone here. I didn't care for the game. Especially not for the $40 I paid for the import version. I really enjoyed the first Runaway, so maybe my expectations were too high for this one.

Part of the problem was the puzzles. I expected them to improve from the first game, not go the other way. Not that all of them were bad, but there were a few that really put me off. To be more specific,

Click to reveal..
I expected the puzzles to use "Broken Sword type logic" rather than "Monkey Island type logic." For example, there's a puzzle where you have to melt metal using a magnifying glass and sunlight. That type of puzzle might be OK in a gameworld where you can use a monkey as a monkey wrench, but I expected slightly more realism in a game that's often considered to be the spiritual descendent of the Broken Sword series. The magnifying glass puzzle happens early in the game and maybe it should have clued me in to what would come later, but I continued to be surprised by unlikely solutions that were further from real world solutions than what I expected.

My other problem with the game was actually worse. I didn't think the characters were nearly as likable as in the first game. I can't explain that without spoilers to give examples

Click to reveal..
I didn't realize how much Gina added to the Runaway series until I had to do without her. You see a little of her in the intro, but then she's unconscious and out of sight for the rest of the game.

Brian is a real #&%$#! in Runaway 2. He cheats on Gina while she is unconscious and on the verge of death. Brian also arranges for a polar bear to rape a scientist. (Yes the scientist is stupid and annoying, but what Brian did is still a bit much for me).

Dean Grassick -- made several times more annoying for me because of numerous crashes I had in that part of the game, which include a long sequence of cut scenes that can't be skipped and no chance to save until the end of them. After seeing this sequence for about the fifth time, I was ready to do unspeakable things to the game DVD. The game was perfectly stable in every other location except the Grassick sequence. Why oh why did it have to crash there, always in a slightly different part of the cut scene sequence.

And then there's whiny Joshua. He was in the first game too, but not nearly as much of him. He really needs a voicebox transplant if they're going to use him again.

And then there's this

Click to reveal..
Yet another game that ends in a cliffhanger. Is this a new trend? I think I'm going to start waiting longer on getting games, and if I hear a game ends with a cliffhanger I'm not going to buy it until the next one in the series comes out -- and only then if the second game has a proper ending. Leaving a principal character on the verge of death is not an acceptable ending IMO.

Jenny100, I really liked the game, but I'm sure I came to the game with a different set of expectations than you did.

I have not played any of the Broken Sword series and only part of the first Runaway game. wave

Yes I had high expectations for the game. I also want certain things out of a game, and if I don't like the playable character I find it difficult to enjoy the game.

I heartily agree on that point !!

When Simon II ended with a cliffhanger, which I felt was very unfair after I had payed full price for what I thought was going to be a full game, I phoned AdventureSoft to give them a piece of mind mad

And considering there was then a five year wait till the "graphically unfinished, disappointingly action filled, rubbishy" Simon III appeared, I feel I was entirely JUSTIFIED !!!!

Ah, yes. In those bygone days, one could actually phone in to a studio and discuss a game with the people who made it ....

[Unlike you, however, I did very much enjoy Runaway II, apart from the "NON" ending :(]

Cheers.

I actually enjoyed Simon 3D. It wasn't the most stable game I ever played, but I think I had less problems with it than most people. And I played it with my brother, who did the arcade thing for me. We both thought it was a hoot.

Hi Jenny100 smile

I definitely should have scouted round for a "Brother" myself then !! I was almost hairless after that gaming experience lol
[I persevered and played all the timed bits right up until the graphic glitches just got so bad I couldn't carry on .... But I didn't enjoy them. So a "lose, lose" situation all told mad]

At the time of Simon II, the folks at AdventureSoft were very nice. I would get put through to a developer who would discuss the game with me and give me a tip if I was stuck. It was wonderful thumbsup

But the only responses to my complaints about the

Simon II Ending
were sardonic chuckles slapforehead

Cheers.
