Quote:
"DRACULA 4: THE SHADOW OF THE DRAGON":
SHIVERS AND INVESTIGATION IN THE ART INDUSTRY
Montreuil, June 19th, 2013. Microids’ adventure label (from French publisher Anuman Interactive) announces the launch of the fourth title of the adventure video game saga "Dracula" on PC and Mac. Mobile versions (iOS and Android) will be available soon.

More than ten years after the first episode was released, the Prince of Darkness is back in this first person adventure game, full of puzzles and mysteries. With more than one and a half million games sold throughout the world, the Dracula saga has conquered the players’ hearts.

Today, "Dracula 4: The Shadow of the Dragon" strives after the same success as the first trilogy and uses the adventure games published by Microids specific ingredients, i.e. a catchy plot, quick thinking puzzles, charismatic characters and a supernatural atmosphere.
In "Dracula 4: The Shadow of the Dragon", players embody Ellen Cross, an art restorer assigned by the New York Metropolitan Museum to identify a masterpiece that has just reappeared in Budapest. A few months earlier, this masterpiece along with its collection had mysteriously disappeared at sea.

The investigation begins and leads Ellen Cross on a journey around the world (Turkey, Hungary, England, USA…) where she will meet enigmatic characters such as Adam B. Stoker, the famous novelist’s great grandson…

At the beginning of the game, players can choose to run a Prologue (to learn the basic commands) or to directly start the investigation in Whitby’s Castle, in England.

Two game modes are then available:
 The Casual mode (for casual players) includes a help system in the adventure. Markers indicate the places to visit.

 On the opposite, the Adventure mode offers the opportunity to play without any help or indication, is more difficult and relies on more challenges.

Thanks to a 360 degree first person view, players move in 3D environments where they must observe and think quickly to solve the puzzles on their way.

For this, they can use a quick inventory allowing them to equip an object and use it during the game (for instance, the black light helps studying the masterpieces Ellen is about to discover).

The Full inventory lists all the objects that Ellen will pick up during her adventure and makes it possible to combine some of them together (associate wax with the Metropolitan Museum stamp, to seal an art work for instance).

Also, Ellen’s journal helps the players to register important information during the adventure (press clipping, goals, transcription of discussions…) as the first aid kit contains the heroin’s medication and specific dose.
Players will learn that Ellen Cross is affected by a severe disease that weakens her.

Consequently, they will have to regularly combine and use the medication to restore Ellen’s health, or they won’t be able to carry out specific actions. This constraint encourages players to pay close attention to their character and helps embody her.
Finally, players can unlock more than twenty trophies and try to improve their score during the adventure. Players who will finish the game quickly with as little help as possible will be rewarded.

"Dracula 4: The Shadow of the Dragon" is available as of June 19th, 2013 on PC and Mac, in digital version and in English, French, Italian, Spanish and German. Mobile versions (iOS and Android) will be available soon.

A JOURNEY AROUND THE GLOBE
During the adventure, the players and Ellen Cross will travel around the world to find answers to their questions, from the streets of New York, to the charm of England, with the mystery of Istanbul…

A real investigation around the globe awaits them!

Is "Dracula 4: The Shadow of the Dragon" meant for a wide audience or only adventure video game fans?

« Unlike previous titles that were sometimes too difficult, we have been willing to create a game where each player can experience the adventure as he wishes. For all the adventure game casual players, a Casual mode allows them to enjoy the story without being stuck for too long, thanks to markers and the possibility to skip the puzzles. On the contrary, for the fans, an Adventure mode makes it possible to live the adventure without any help. This is why Dracula 4 is a “customizable” game that every player can enjoy.»

Happy Gaming!

I recommend that the gamer verify if their computer can play the game. It is very graphics heavy.

Just to all notice: this is not a "full" game. It is periodic. Too short and too expensive for what it brings to us. Good game but not "that" game. It's more on the casual game side. Not even get close to the good and "full" game as Dracula 3 was. To my point of view, this part is the 1/4th of the full game that I was expecting.

The trailer looked like a casual game to me but I'm surprised they didn't tell you this was going to be episodic. Bummer.

THis is not episodic. They are however working on a Dracula 5 but this is a full game.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with you, BrownEyedTigre. It IS NOT a full game. It is an episodic game. Or if you think that a "full" game can be finished in less than 3 hours is a full game, then you are right. I don't think so... The end game is abrupt, telling you that a 5th episode will come. That, for me, is telling us that it is an episodic game. And an expensive one, by the way...

The game is a not concluded in this release. As stated at the ending of Dracula 4; there will be a Dracula 5 to continue the story.

Well I wont complain due to the lack of new adventure games available, but this dracula is by far the worst. The rest were really good. This one reminds me of a Nancy drew type game with just puzzles..I am not far into the game, but it seems very (like a low budget game) lol....i will plug away at it...so far not impressed...also the movement is not great either.....ok rant over..lol

From reading all the comments about the game I think that this is one that I will be passing on. Maybe when Drac 5 comes out and I've read the comments on both of them together, I may reconsider. I do have a couple dozen games screaming at me "play me, play me!" lol rotfl

Ugh, I'm really mad at myself that I didn't read this thread before purchasing the game for $20!!! I got Dracula 3 for free during the pumpkin carving promo in 2008, and thought it was a solid little adventure (if short on vampires).

I've only been playing Dracula 4 for about 10 minutes, but am already NOT impressed by the clunky interface, too-easy puzzles, and graphics. This feels like a circa-2006 (or earlier) game. I guess I was mislead by the flashy trailers that looked like throwbacks to Dracula: Origin (which I really enjoyed!).

Oh, and a minor rant that smacks of laziness: when you see the "newspapers," only the headlines are fleshed out, and the rest of the text (which is large enough to be legible) is Lorem Ipsum. I work in publishing for a living, and even when I do mockups, I don't use Lorem Ipsum to auto-generate text...Even the Nancy Drew games bother to "write" articles to fill out newspapers and text seen in-game.

Sorry but I will have to agree with Uruboo, if this is a full game then it is the shortest full game adventure ever made this side of free, online games. I will also say that it is also short for a Chapter 1 of an episodic adventure. I don't want to be a downer, the game did show some promise story and game play wise but the sudden ending after a few hours of game play and the story continued in Dracula 5 that you see at the end left too much to be desired. If they plan on charging this much for each episode then, depending on how many episodes, a full adventure game might end up costing $80 to $100. Hmmmm...is this why there isn't a real web site for the game opened before release?...Just sayin, would love to see a response from Anuman.

Thanks for letting us know about this. I just played it and loved it. Reminds me a little of how Kheops Studio used to put together games.

Dracula 4 is nowhere near as good as Dracula3 It's not bad but too short being an episodic game (GRRRHHHH!)
I found the game to be most linear in that if you are missing just one thing you cannot solve a puzzle or progress any further. I found in the library I was stuck for ages before entering the secret room. I had read the codes from the books but not clicked on it. As I had not verified to the game I had the code, it would not let me enter. One aspect of the game I did really like was the use of the Adventure Mode and the Casual Mode. I played 99.8% of the game using Adventure Mode with markers turned off. Just a couple of things I had problems finding, so I turned to Casual for a few seconds and found what I was after.
I also found the lip synch to be atrocious when Adam and Ellen talk. There is no lip movement when talking and some lip movement when there is no talking. I put it down to the translation from the native language in what the game was made to the English dub.
These comments are just my 2 cents worth.

I'm so disappointed - this was a "buy" for me before I read the comments. Shucks, and I was in the mood for a good Dracula game.

I've decided to hold off until a full game is released.
I don't like "episodics" and it sounds like this game has turned out to be one frown
[And I was SO looking forward to it !!]

Same here, Mad. Someone at Mystery Manor played it and was also quite disappointed.

Of interest is that on the casual game website, Gamezebo, the reviewer gave the game five stars. wave

I wonder if the main complaint is just that it was short and if you compare to the originals you feel cheated. If it was a stand alone game with no preconceived notions would it be good? Just a thought.

Evidently that's where the money is in Anuman's view, in casual games for iPad and Android and the like. Quite frankly, I'm avoiding Anuman from now on. As far as I'm concerned, they pulled a fast one on adventure gamers.

Mad, if you're waiting for part two to buy it, odds are you'll be paying for two games, not one, and the price for this game was relatively steep considering the length everyone is reporting.

Ana, is it possible for adventure gamers to have no preconceived notions about the Dracula games? Anuman must have known very well what the reaction from AGs would be.

Cynical? Me?

Gil.

There is a huge difference in gameplay when playing casual mode or adventure mode. I played the game in adventure mode first and took me on 6 hours to complete without any help. Then playing in casual mode took me under 2 hours as all the markers show where everything is. The hardest puzzle is the lock pick one as it is strictly trial and error, whereas all the other puzzles are pure logic. Yes, some women do have logic. As far as a score goes, I would rate the game as a 2 out of 5. It has some good features but there are many more bad ones.

Yikes... I was so looking forward to playing this game. I had been waiting for this sequel since D3.

I saw the trailer and was impressed by it initially. That impression quickly faded after reading this thread and after learning that the game was being featured and reviewed at Gamezebo.

Has this been turned into a casual game?

I guess I will just have to wait for a full review of this game by a legit adventure game site (**hint, hint**)!

What happened? Was this a production budget cut?

For those of you who bought and played the game -- did any kind of manual or readme get installed with the game?

The game only comes as a digital download at the moment. There is no manual among the game files. At the start of the game there is a Prologue/Tutorial that you can take. The tutorial explains all the cursors and movements that you need. navigation is smooth and simple in Dracula 4, so there is no real need for a manual.

The tutorial does NOT explain why you have a Load Game option on the Main Menu with no ability to save the game. I wouldn't be surprised to see people asking how to save games in Glitches forum, the same way there were with the "updated" download version of Nautilus, etc.

If a second person in your household wants to play the game, it does NOT repeat instructions for creating a new profile. It would be easy for them to overwrite the first player's profile by starting a new game.

At no time was it explained that you miss part of the game by not playing the tutorial before choosing "New Game."

I wasn't able to find a pdf manual or readme in my game folder, which is why I asked if anyone else had received one. I disagree with you when you say no manual is necessary. People shouldn't have to check Marita's walkthrough to find out about these things.

I noticed in the walkthrough that there is no manual save feature. Does this mean that we have to go through huge chunks of the game before an autosave or have to start all over again if we have to quit before there's an autosave? I recently attemped a game like that and had to start all over again after getting quite a ways in. If that's the case I think I'll skip this one which is too bad as I've liked the passed Drac. games.

Regards,

Barry

I just saw on adventureclassicgaming that they have just posted a review on Dracula 4. The writer pulled no punches on what he thought of the game and gave it a 2 out of 5. It was a good review and a fair one I thought. When GameBoomers release a review on Dracula 4,I would like to see the comparisons between them.

For those who wants to know what Callista was referring to, there is the link:

http://www.adventureclassicgaming.com/index.php/site/reviews/806/

I have mixed feelings of the review. The review points to the same issues as other posters here about the short length of the game. But I am not sure if I care much that the story needs to be a direct continuation of the previous game. The last game came out a few years ago, so it may be a good idea to reboot the series to a new direction. I think this game was developed by a new developer not involved in the previous games. Thus, it makes sense that the developer would want to reboot the series with a new story.

I agree with Callista that the reviewer pulled no "punches" in his opinion.

Does rebooting mean leaving Dracula out? If this is going to be a vampire saga without the old man, they should leave him out of the title and stop misleading people, especially people who love the Dracula series and were looking forward to a new game about him.

To quote the reviewer: "Even after some substantive time of play, there is not a whimper of the word "Dracula" to be heard in the game. As an example, early on in the game, you find a bust of Vlad Tepes (Dracula) hidden by Professor Vambery in a secret vault. Yet, no observation is being made by any other character—not even Adam, despite being a descendant of Stoker—to ever suspect Dracula to be involved."

It was never supposed to be a sequel to the others as I posted Here.

Interesting thoughts, Gil.

It may just be literary foreshadowing that his name is not explicitly mentioned early on. Thankfully, the review did not include any spoilers on how the game ends, so I don't know if the name Dracula will come up later in the game.

I suppose I'm just hot about the way 'Dracula' 4 turns out to be not only short but episodic when no mention was made of that, and so far seems to have little to do with him. Maybe they'll get to him next time...or the time after that.

It really irks me because I loved Resurrection, Sanctuary and Origin, the last markedly different from the first two but a great game on its own even if Dracula didn't appear very much in it and the story was truly a "rebooting". The threat of Dracula was there throughout the game and the protagonist was a well known character from the novel so I, at least, didn't feel cheated. Not to mention that the graphics were beautiful in all three, immeasurably better than what I see in the trailer for The Shadow of the Dragon.

What I've seen of this game and what I read in ACG's review is so disappointing. I really did want to like it and now I'm so glad I didn't have the wherewithal to get it hot off the press.

Arrgh. sad

Gil.

Indeed, Tomato Lady. I watched a ten minute gameplay video on some game site and I can tell you that the price of Dracula 4 could be "Free to a Good Home" and I'd pass.

Hey, Jenny100,

You'll notice I left Dracula 3 out of my list of wonderful (to me) Dracula games. Dreary hardly describes it and I could honestly have done without the ugliest depiction of Dracula I've ever seen. Squat and brutish doesn't fit my image of Dracula.

That you 'may' have seen Dracula in some form in 4 cuts no ice with me. I want my Dracula out there with fangs ready to puncture my swanlike throat, not cleverly disguised as another character or a vase or whatever he 'might' be.

That was a good review, maybe a tad generous from what I've read and seen, but you did your darndest to be fair. Kudos.

Gil.

LOL. Not mine either. How could he expect to seduce anyone when he goes out to meet them looking like that?

Quote:

We may see him that way in Dracula 5. Dracula 4 was just the first part of the game. Do you remember if we saw Dracula in the first part of either Dracula Resurrection or Dracula Last Sanctuary? It's been too long since I played them to remember. I vividly remember repeatedly drowning in sewage about halfway through Last Sanctuary, but I can't remember when I first saw Dracula in that game.

It's too bad Anuman/Microids didn't have the resources to make a single game instead of publishing what they had and promising the rest later. That worked out OK for Syberia, but Syberia 1 was much longer than Dracula 4.

"Do you remember if we saw Dracula in the first part of either Dracula Resurrection or Dracula Last Sanctuary?"

Oh, yes, we sure did. He was a constant presence in both, I seem to recall, though I think he showed up sooner in Sanctuary. Aside from the plastic hair, he looked great with a sort of frightening Christopher Lee suavity about him.

Dracula told his ratlike henchman something on a foggy London street early on in at least one of the games and then later, I know, he was talking to Renfield, the little guy in the asylum who liked to eat flies and wore the vampire glasses, before Jonathan got around to finding him. Anyway, Dracula was in and out of both games, even once as a robotic replica of himself.

Definitely, what Gil said! The first thing you saw in Sanctuary was Drac and the henchman in the opening cutscene.

I'd forgotten all about that guy eating the flies. I don't remember the vampire glasses at all. I remember the terribly ugly inkeeper in Dracula Resurrection and investigating a snow-covered area at night. And I remember almost falling off my chair laughing when I got attacked by a giant bat early in Last Sanctuary. But I don't remember much about Dracula. Was he as wrinkly as on the box covers?

I like the Frogwares version best myself.

You needed the vampire glasses to do several of the puzzles and navigate the sewers. grin

Those giant bat thingies were too much, weren't they? Still, they had me for lunch more than once. And yes, Dracula looked exactly like the box cover, as if he still hadn't quite recovered from years in the crypt. Yeeks!

I really enjoyed Origin (Frogwares) but that Dracula was too pretty. There was nothing terrifying about him, no ominous uneasy feeling when he showed up that made you realize this guy was dangerous. So, Resurrection/Sanctuary's Drac is the one for me.

Just an FYI: Dracula 4 is now available on GOG and if you purchase before Sunday you will get the trilogy free.

Have you played the previous games, mcc? If you have, how do you think this stacks up against them?

Gil.

Just a heads up for those who haven't played or for those that missed this. If you don't select " Prologue/Tutorial" at the start of the game (as I didn't) you will miss the first part of the game. I didn't realize this until today upon reading MaG's walkthrough to help a friend I noticed the whole first part was something I never played. If you select a new game and skip the Tutorial (I always do) you will be dropped into the game after the first part is over. Seems pretty silly to me for them not to alert the player that if they skip the Tutorial they will skip the first part. Added about a half hour more of game time to complete the first part for me but could take you longer depending on how long it takes you to figure out one of the puzzles.

No problem, it's a good reminder and one that should have indeed been mentioned in the game.
