Hello fellow Gameboomers from an old (but frequently absent) friend.

I'm not on this forum nearly as often as I used to be some years ago, but it's still where I turn for adventure game advice! I finished Grey Matter a few months ago, and I'm now almost done with Lost Horizon. I liked both games, though each is a different style. I think I may like Lost Horizon a bit better, though i can't put my finger on why. Maybe it's because you don't have to keep going back to the same locations over and over, but each section is like a separate chapter in a different location. I also like the feature that reviews where you are and what your goals are, since I sometimes go weeks without playing and forget where I left off.

So, I'm looking for something else to play, and I prefer story based games with strong characters. I noticed Shadows of the Vatican. Any thoughts on that one. (I see part 2 is about to be released, but if I play , I'd start with part 1). I also see I've missed Broken Sword 4, and now Broken Sword 5 is out. (I've seen mixed reviews on 4, but like that 5 has gone back to the old animation).

I used to prefer the boxed versions of the games, but lately I've been getting the download version and have been enjoying that. (takes up no shelf space!) I suppose it's also cheaper for developers, and helps keep the adventure game genre alive.

Have you looked at any of the downloadable Sherlock Holmes games from Frogwares ??

My favourite is still "The Awakened" which is an excellent mystery story with a tinge of horror running through it
[The re-mastered version is the best one to go for.]

But there's a good variety of theme in the Sherlock Holmes stories offered by Frogwares and all have been reviewed here at Gameboomers

ALL of the games you have mentioned I have played (except for Broken Sword 5 Act 2, since it has not been released as yet). I enjoyed everyone of them and MAG made my life easier by providing her MAGnificent walkthroughs for all of these games. Nice to see you on the GB Forum, and HAPPY GAMING.

I would say try "Broken Sword 5" - it is well worth playing and an interesting return to form for the series.

Thanks for the advice. I'd forgotten about the Sherlock Holmes games, I've played one or two, but they may not be part of the Frogware series, I'll to check the site and find out.

I loved the Broken Sword games , especially 1 & 2. Wonder if I should skip #4 and go right to #5, since I've seen some bad reviews of 4? Thoughts?

I could be wrong but I believe that most of the bad reviews for BS4 were because of the technical difficulties in playing the game. However they have been pretty much resolved now and if you get the GOG Version it should play bug free and is a very enjoyable game. At least in my opinion.

Broken Sword 5 is a return to form for the series - back to it's 2D roots.

BS 4 has action elements in it that were met with a mixed response.

BS4 wasn't bad. It had significantly less action/timed stuff than BS3.
There were problems moving around. They tried to give you a choice of keyboard or mouse, but neither worked smoothly. In some places one worked better, in other places the other worked better. Not insurmountable, but annoying. On the computer I played it on, some game areas experienced significant slowdown -- enough that I had to turn off things like shadows and animations to prevent the slowdown (sticky cursor). The slowdown problem may have been fixed since I played it. I don't remember any out-and-out crashes -- just that it was clumsy to move around. (BS3 was also clumsy to move around, but in a different way.) Apparently some other people had crashes, which may have been fixed since I played it. I got the impression that what most people objected to in the game was another woman (Anna Marie) getting George's attention instead of Nico.
