Just uninstall it from your Programs. Why do you want to delete it? It's one of the best utilities for uncompressing files out there.

Why would you want to use 7-Zip in the first place, Draclvr? Windows 7 has its own unzipper. Works well, too.
Go;/ ...? Lol!

Does win 7 unzip .RAR files?

That's why, Gil. Windows 7 and 8 have their own unzippers, but they do not unzip anything other than zip files.

Well, you know me, I am so ornery. I see no point in duplicating what Windows already does so I use another app, Free RAR Extract Frog for...um...unRARing. Anyway, the frog is cute. Gil.

I do like that frog! I use 7-Zip for the same reason you use the frog - it does things the Windows unzipper can't do.

I don't have any trouble deleting 7-zip. When I double click any of my desktop shortcut they won't open. I have to right click on the shortcut and click on open. Running win xp. Never had that happen before. I have to do the same with restore.

When I double click any of my desktop shortcut they won't open. I have to right click on the shortcut and click on open. Desktop shortcuts don't have anything to do with 7-zip. Running win xp. Never had that happen before. Are you saying that happened immediately after you uninstalled 7-zip? Where did you download it from? I have to do the same with restore. Now I'm really confused. Are you talking about System Restore?

Yes system restore. None of my shortcuts will open after I deleted 7-zip. I've deleted a lot of programs from my pc and this is the first time anything like this ever happened before. I shut my pc down and thought that might help. Before I deleted 7-zip I added a restore so I could go back and restore before I deleted 7-zip. I did that 3 times. After I deleted 7-zip I can't double click on the system restore it won't open,I have to right click and click to open it. Thered is no reason for that to happen. I've searched the internet and I'm not the only pearson that that has happened to. I use Winzip to open anything. Wondering if I can still use it now that 7-zip in on my pc. I've never had any trouble deleting any thing from my pc before. Thanks for reading my posts Jenny. Richard

The most important question you have to answer that Jenny asked - where did you initially download 7-Zip from? If it was not from the official 7-Zip site, you probably downloaded malware with it. Run all your security scans. Since this is XP, there's not much you can do to protect yourself.

I don't know anything about that website, though from what Google found, site advisors say it is safe. That doesn't mean it's a good idea to try to install an old game from 1990 on a modern computer. It might install on 32-bit Windows, but if it replaces system files it can seriously screw things up -- which may be what you're seeing. Unless you plan to install such old DOS games inside DOSBox or some other emulator, I'd suggest not downloading them. I don't know if the download included 7-zip, but you should only install 7-zip from the http://www.7-zip.org/ website. There may be some other trustworthy download sites, but they are getting fewer and fewer. You certainly don't want unwanted additions containing advertising or worse. There was a big download that I clicked on by mistake. 7-zip is only 1 MB. The James Bond game is only 2 MB. Neither would be a "big download." I don't know what this "big download" you clicked on was, but it doesn't seem to be either of those. Do you have the name of the file you downloaded? Don't ever "Run" any new program directly from your web browser. You have no idea what you're installing, and in this case it seems to have borked your computer. You can try System Restore, but if you downloaded and installed malware, it's probably not going to go away.

Just a question: did you "uninstall" 7-Zip or did you "delete" it? (Delete = right click on the file and hit 'delete'.) There is a difference so I'm a little confused by what you mean.
At any rate, System Restore can cause a program to stop working correctly (it tells you it might) but you should be able to fix that by downloading 7-Zip again from the official website and reinstalling it.
Gil.

I would, Richard. What can it hurt? Installing it again from the official website should fix the program. Hope so! Gil.

Richard, You are so welcome. I've had programs (and games) stop working after a System Restore but I usually knew I might have a problem and would have to reinstall them to get them to work again...or to UNinstall them if I wanted to. Believe me, I'm not a geek, just someone who gets herself into trouble and then has to get herself out again. Sometimes, I do; if not, I come here hollering for help, too. Next time you use System Restore click on the thingy that will tell you what programs might be affected. It's worth waiting for Windows to search them out. Gil.

This sounds like a file association problem. I'm assuming those files that stopped working when you double-clicked them were archive type files? It was never clear from your posts. Indeed. I thought he was talking about his desktop shortcuts.

If I had more knowledge about computers I might have thought the same thing you did, Draclvr and Jenny, but the only thing that got my attention was what Richard said about System Restore. I knew that could screw up some programs, so.... What's that they say about a dingbat little child leading them? Gil.

7-Zip is not a game. Illegal sites are infamous for adding malware to their downloads. Always get 7-Zip from its SourceForge site: http://sourceforge.net/projects/sevenzip/ You will need to be vigilant after a system restore as a lot of malware will copy itself in the the restore points so that you restore the malware with the system restore. You probably need to do some serious AV scanning of your system. Also, as Draclvr notes, you are more at risk on XP with no more security updates and some security software dropping support for it. Remember, XP is more than a decade old, which in computer terms is ancient. BTW, 7-Zip will handle all that WinZip does and many more. With just the built-in utility and WinZip you will still commonly encounter type you will not be able to open. It can even unpack some installers. You are better off to dump WinZip than 7Zip, but it really does not hurt to have all. They are small programs and do not conflict with each other after you decide what program you want to open each type.
