As the title states, would like to buy some games that focus on survival. The problem is that many of these types of games are action only ; like "The Last of Us", and "Alan Wake" , etc. It would be nice for there to be some apocalyptic games that are developed for PC and not a gaming system that some of us don't have.
"Alan Wake:American Nightmare" is available for purchase through Amazon, I think. But again it's an action game, and I'm not even sure it would work on my PC. Dvd games are 'iffy' at best...you can buy them and if they don't install/run correctly, it's too bad. Can't really get a refund on used discs ; in my opinion. BestBuy won't refund any opened merchandise, even if it doesn't work on your pc ; and that's the policy for most stores.
The sequel to "The Longest Journey" worked on my computer --- until the combat scenes. Then, crash. Never did get that to work and finally tossed the dvd out. :(

There are lots of PC games that focus on survival, but the genre lends itself particularly well to action-based gameplay and so that is what most of these games are.

Just to name a few: Call of Chthulhu, Fear, Prey, Bioshock, Amnesia, System Shock 2. Until recently I resisted downloading games, preferring a DVD, and I've only ever had one or two games that was so buggy out of the box that I couldn't play it. These days there are almost always patches or workarounds available on line.

It sounds as though your computer or graphics card might the problem, though, as opposed to the games themselves. Modern games do require a lot of graphics oomph. Maybe you could post your computer's specs? Someone here who is not me (since I am hopeless with this stuff )might be able to lend a hand with this.

You might also want to post your computer specs... For instance, if you are still running XP on a minimal system, not much will work.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you're looking for games that do NOT have action in them. There aren't that many games that take place in apocalyptic world that aren't action-oriented.

Not sure if "A New Beginning" would qualify, since you're going back in time to try to change things before they happen.

Maybe "Tex Murphy: Tesla Effect" -- since it takes place after WWIII.
Make sure your computer meets the specs. The video card is the most important thing to look at, not the age of the computer (unless it's 8+ years old or something). Also the download is huge -- 14 to 15 GB.

I think the Deponia series is post-apocalyptic -- however it's comedy.

Good game, though many people have bugs. But very inexpensive now.

I think 'The Walking Dead' could be the answer? It does not have any "direct" action except for in the beginning. But I haven't completed that game. I haven't played Fallout that much but it is more RPG-like and less like action adventure. It ran on my Pentium 4-HT with GeForce 210.
